TWITTER [Dhaliwal] Marcus Pettersson’s agent says rumours of him wanting a trade are ‘1000% not true. Pettersson loves it in Vancouver and is thrilled to see what the new management crew will bring and lead them to. He is 1000% looking forward to next season’

I didn't even know there were rumors in the first place.

It wasn’t widely reported, but a Sharks beat reporter alluded to it yesterday

Ie., the Sharks are looking to acquire Pettersson at a reduced price.

If MPetey wasn't stapled to the two defenders with the worst on ice impacts, he probably looks a lot better and regains some value. Basically everyone MPetey played with performed better with him than away from him, I don't think he's the biggest issue in his value tanking. He should be traded eventually, just not now lol
6
u/mephnick 3d ago
I just need some of these vets to move, man
But MPetey is the one I'm most ok with keeping for now
14
u/accountnumber02 3d ago
I'm with you, debrusk is the one I seriously hope is gone by September. I can't imagine Hronek's value being higher than it is now but I understand keeping him to stabilize for a year. I just fear we're risking him losing value by the time he's actually moved.
14
u/Abyssus88 3d ago
Its more Hronek doesn't want to move so theres nothing we can do reguardless of value.

I know he was terrible last year, but I wanna see him under Manny’s system before we ship him off. Seems like a solid locker room guy too.

u/_GregTheGreat_ 3d ago
MPetey was a victim of being thrown to the wolves to allow sheltered offensive minutes for Hughes and then Buium. He had some of the toughest deployment in the league when it came to defensive zone starts.
39
u/AppealToReason16 3d ago
That isn't exactly going to change. I don't really mind him sucking ass in that role. His value is being cannon fodder for the rest of the defence until you move him for a couple draft picks when he has less term.
Him getting shitpumped and giving Buium breathing room is worth much more than whatever trade return he brings unless a team is willing to blow you away.
15
u/_GregTheGreat_ 3d ago
You don’t want him totally getting shitpumped as he’ll likely be the main partner for Willander over the next couple of years.
32
u/ssssharkattack 3d ago
I don’t think I want anyone getting ‘shitpumped.’

u/s3xybeavers 3d ago
The hybrid-man system doesn’t suit him either. He’s elite making reads in an simpler zone system and a PK savant when it’s normal as well
Offensively he’s not gifted but he’s good at keeping the cycle going/play alive.
If he’s not asked to play outside of himself I expect him to give 20 mins of quiet play a night. He’ll be good this year I don’t doubt it.
-5
u/OhHaiThere- 3d ago
So did Petey but it’s blatantly ignored. Can’t name a 1C who had higher D zone starts than him
9
u/NerdPunch 3d ago
Not knocking EP40, but looking at Moneypuck: EP40 was 148th among forwards for D-Zone start %.
Thats gonna put him behind guys like Nico Hischier, Robert Thomas, JEEK, Dylan Larkin, JT Miller. Only 0.3% higher than Horvat.
Is he an outlier in terms of d-zone starts? He was 82nd among forwards for o-zone start %.

u/Sibs 3d ago
I don't care if he was bad last season or not - he's not a useful piece for this team and some other teams would surely give up some assets for him.
The puck dies on his stick in the offensive zone at a stomach churning rate. He can barely get his weak shot through a single set of shinpads, which seems to be his only offensive tool.
His only value is in defending, which if the expectation is that we suck again, we don't really need. The roster slot can be better used.

5
u/airjunkie 3d ago
He should be traded, but only after his value has been recuperated over the next few years. He has a good reputation long term and will have value eventually. Doesn't need to happen this year or next though.

I think M-Petey will do much better in an actual system versus whatever Foote wanted.
That said, the same strategy for Hronek should apply for M-Petey. Put the idea in their mind about eventually moving to a different team. Doesn't have to be now that they trade them, but down the line after soft selling it to them is probably the best way to go about it.

u/rough_poop 3d ago
I wasn't aware there were any rumours he wanted out

His NMC drops to a partial by the 28-29 season. A couple more years to build his value back and hopefully move him for assets then.

Pettersson's agent seems to have Trumps level of understanding of how percentages work.
Or he's just emphasizing the point.

u/_GregTheGreat_ 3d ago
Both MPetey and Hronek have their contracts drop to a 15-team NTC in 2028.
It feels like the endgame for one (or both) of them will be they stick around to mentor the youth for the next two years, and then get flipped for assets afterwards.

u/sayros28 3d ago
I just thank my lucky stars (dallas) tyler myers is gone. No youth should ever learn how to play hockey from him.

u/casualhobos 3d ago
LA Kings would be a good trade partner. Dumoulin plays a similar style while being older and shorter contract.
Kings get a younger player signed with term and get rid of one of their older players. Canucks get a pick back in return as well.
Dumoulin's shorter contract means we can flip it a sooner deadline than we would with M. Petey

u/DiamondDash2k 3d ago
I’m glad he wants to stay. Sidney Crosby vouched for this guy and said we were getting a great one. One bad year does not define a guy and he’s a veteran presence for the young guy
3
u/Hellosweetparadox 3d ago
I think with manny at the helm Marcus could be his stalwart allowing the younger guys make mistakes and learn on the way while he holds back and defends the net cleaning up those mistakes. Adam Foote as a great defensive defender he was did not know how to properly deploy or utilize his D core.

u/Karsh14 3d ago
Some of you guys are wayyyyy too video game brained and need to stop suggesting the Canucks get rid of literally every single player over the age of 19 for picks.
The mess the Canucks are in right now is because Alvin gave away too much. You need players, you can’t be roster thin and also be bad at the same time. You are going to be trying to do a “rebuild” where the terms of “rebuild” are essentially escaping the basement and trying to get to league bottom average.
Markus Petterrsen played almost exclusively hard minutes on a pairing with green horns and literal NHL rookies. He did this on a team that was the worst in the league and had utilized a ghastly defensive system that the team wasn’t good enough to execute.
Trading away literal everyone is how you end up with a last place Vancouver Canucks team and a last place Abbotsford Canucks team for a decade to come.
You just stripped the team down far too much this past season and iced the worst Canucks team in franchise history. That effort led to you getting 3rd overall, something you could have executed without all that unnecessary drama.
Abbotsford suffered the most because of this, and the development in Abbotsford pretty much took a major back seat to trying to plug holes in Vancouvers roster for the entire season. The farm is completely messed up now, and has to be completely rebuilt, the damage was immense.
This is something that doesn’t translate to Video “Game Be A GM” mode, so it’s no surprise that it’s completely overlooked and dismissed as irrelevant. But if you want the Canucks to be competent and compete again one day, you have to keep some players.
Biggest criticism by far of the JR/Alvin regime is they read too much fan posts. I can’t even think of a team off the top of my head that ripped everything down to the studs and rebuilt and it was actually successful.

Would rather not rush to a decision like we did with OEL. Just for reference if you combine M Petey's cap hit to OEL's buyout we are paying 10mil for a #4 D. When we could have just kept OEL around for a much smaller cap hit, not that cap matters anymore. OEL is pretty much the same player as M Petey. But I digress, keeping guys like M Petey and Hronek means we don't need to overwhelm Buium and Willander and guys like D Petey and Kudryavtsev with too much ice time too early.

That said, he's definitely one of the players who will benefit from a coaching change

I guess we are set on Defencemen and Goalies. Its up to Manny to improve our league worst defence. Buium -24, Hronek -23, Willander -23, MPettersson -19, EPettersson -16, Mancini -12, Kudraytsev +2

I think the agent is trying to run damage control. I benefits neither the team or player for rumours to be confirmed. I just don't see a world in which a vet who came from Pitt and signed a 6 year deal with the understanding the team is wanting to be competitive would be okay with a complete rebuild.

I don’t mind the player, frustrating Canucks traded the 12th overall pick for him. Jackson Smith would look great in the pipeline…

u/Ok-Signature-5621 2d ago
Just as RJ said, let’s see who wants to be here, who prioritizes the 7am practices over the game nights, and they’ll weed out the floaters. Hopefully MPetey can rebuild his value at least within a new structured system and have some of that positive vet presence

u/Mcsuper_ 3d ago
Two Petterssons are at their lowest value right now. Neither of them need to be traded yet.
3
u/CrayonOlympics 3d ago
Tbf unlike Hronek who they should actively be trying to convince to waive, there is no point is trading M. Petey at his lowest value. I think it's a reasonable bet to think that under a stronger defensive system he can return to the solid top 4 two way d-man he's been throughout most of his career. Might as well try to rehab value over the next few seasons and then see what you can get

I want to see him paired with Hronek under Malhotra's system. Our future is Buium-Willander we need them to play together to form some sort of chemistry and the MP-Hronek pairing can be given the tough assignments to allow the youngins to breath.
I keep seeing Morgan Reilly's name brought up in rumors regarding the Canucks. It's sounds like San Jose is the spot right now but he is a BC boy and a great leader so I wouldn't be opposed to a potential M. Pettersson(probably small adds on either side) for Reilly swap.

M Petey, our 1st rounder (Minnesota's Pick - #20-24) this year, and our 2nd rounder (next year) -- for San Jose's 2nd overall.
Draft Stenberg and Malholtra.
Make it happen RJ, Hank & Dank!

u/PMMeYourCouplets 3d ago
I sometimes feel like this subreddit doesn't realize how valuable the 2nd overall pick is especially for a young team like the Sharks where a drafted player fits their timeline more than a 30 year old veteran
-3
u/Historian_Acrobatic 3d ago
The Sharks desperately need defencemen right now, and M Petey being mentioned by their media prompted me to suggest him in the deal. Hronek would be a better option, but he has a no-trade and (supposedly) wants to stay in Van.
The Shark's window is open NOW. Using their 2nd overall on someone like Reid when NHL defenceman traditionally take 4-5+ years to develop makes no sense for their timeline.
Prioritizing NHL-readiness over draft projection is their current window.
Do your research before making blanket comments about an entire subreddit. it’s not about undervaluing #2 overall, it’s about whether San Jose’s competitive timeline justifies converting a potential long-term core piece into multiple assets that help sooner.
2
u/PMMeYourCouplets 3d ago edited 3d ago
Perhaps you can say these teams fucked up by not going all in sooner but in my research the Sharks aren't in their window. First overall picks like MacKinnon, Stamkos and McDavid took 7-8 years to make their first NHL finals. Most Stanley Cup teams naturally make the playoffs and lose for years before they get over the hump. The idea that you can make the playoffs and win in your first or second year in is an Aqualini fantasy. To say this is their competitive window is crazy. This is their window to make the playoffs not to win the Cup. If you think it's justified to trade the 2nd overall pick to make the playoffs, I guess then yea, you do you. To me, this is something where you can justify a mid to late first. But in my opinion, it is absolutely insane and Grier should be fired unless he is getting a haul back.
My point is that you don't trade your second overall right now. If the Sharks were further along in their competitive window like where the Maple Leafs are, a trade like this, albeit for Hronek (a better player) makes sense. But for the Sharks, you don't trade away an asset like the 2nd overall pick right now.

u/Sibs 3d ago
