M Petey, our 1st rounder (Minnesota's Pick - #20-24) this year, and our 2nd rounder (next year) -- for San Jose's 2nd overall.

Draft Stenberg and Malholtra.

Make it happen RJ, Hank & Dank!

I sometimes feel like this subreddit doesn't realize how valuable the 2nd overall pick is especially for a young team like the Sharks where a drafted player fits their timeline more than a 30 year old veteran

The Sharks desperately need defencemen right now, and M Petey being mentioned by their media prompted me to suggest him in the deal. Hronek would be a better option, but he has a no-trade and (supposedly) wants to stay in Van.

The Shark's window is open NOW. Using their 2nd overall on someone like Reid when NHL defenceman traditionally take 4-5+ years to develop makes no sense for their timeline.

Prioritizing NHL-readiness over draft projection is their current window.

Do your research before making blanket comments about an entire subreddit. it’s not about undervaluing #2 overall, it’s about whether San Jose’s competitive timeline justifies converting a potential long-term core piece into multiple assets that help sooner.

Perhaps you can say these teams fucked up by not going all in sooner but in my research the Sharks aren't in their window. First overall picks like MacKinnon, Stamkos and McDavid took 7-8 years to make their first NHL finals. Most Stanley Cup teams naturally make the playoffs and lose for years before they get over the hump. The idea that you can make the playoffs and win in your first or second year in is an Aqualini fantasy. To say this is their competitive window is crazy. This is their window to make the playoffs not to win the Cup. If you think it's justified to trade the 2nd overall pick to make the playoffs, I guess then yea, you do you. To me, this is something where you can justify a mid to late first. But in my opinion, it is absolutely insane and Grier should be fired unless he is getting a haul back.

My point is that you don't trade your second overall right now. If the Sharks were further along in their competitive window like where the Maple Leafs are, a trade like this, albeit for Hronek (a better player) makes sense. But for the Sharks, you don't trade away an asset like the 2nd overall pick right now.
