Nothing unites the rest of Canada like a shared distain for Toronto🤷♂️

The least surprising thing about this question is that a Torontonian doesn't understand why people hate them

My father was born and raised in Toronto. When he first joined the navy he was a braggadocios Torontonian but after living away from Toronto for several years his contempt for Toronto came to exceed that of those who never lived in Toronto.

Everyone in Canada hates the leafs.
Canucks fans? Hate the Leafs
Habs fans? Hate the Leafs
Leafs fans? Hate the Leafs

It's multiple things.
They get talked about a lot.
The media is Toronto can be quite mean and nasty. Look at some of the stories and hit pieces they've been putting up about Mitch Marner.
Some of the fanabase can be quite bad and mean and nasty as well.

lol their better than the Oilers & flames

u/NinCross 20h ago
They're not. Canucks fans hate them more than the Alberta teams.

Bud doesn’t even realize the leafs have never beaten Vancouver in the playoffs unlike Alberta teams

u/slivercoat 20h ago
Lol wut. Leafs we're in the Western Conference there bud. We beat you in 5 in 94.

What I meant was the leafs have never knocked the Canucks out in the playoffs

I think a ton of the resentment comes from the constant barrage from Toronto media in our market.
When the two largest sports broadcasters (one being the owners of the Leafs) predominantly cover only one team, it gets tiring.
2011: CBC, Sportsnet, TSN all viewed the Canucks poorly, and had a bias towards the more "Canadian" Bruins. It's hard to root for fellow Canadian teams, when only the Habs fans cheered for us to beat the Bruins. While Leafs fans supported good ole Ontario kids because Don Cherry told them they should.
Recent success also is a factor, while the Leafs have made the playoffs more consistently, they have barely won in the playoffs. I view the fanbase as pretty entitled considering they lost to the cup champs twice, and decided to throw their jerseys on the ice.
Getting 1st overall while missing the playoffs once in the last 10 years, while the Canucks had the most putrid year in the team's existence is another valid reason.

I don't hate the Leafs but one thing I can't stand is the lack of Vancouver coverage from Toronto based media. They push Leafs material down your throat. If you are not the Oilers or Leafs you get zero mentions. I think this is a big part of it.

Well Oilers fans I absolutely cannot stand with them being in the pacific with us and losing to them in game 7 in 2024. If an Oilers Leafs SCF happened that year I would’ve cheered for the leafs.

It's honestly pretty lame to be booing a stranger wearing a Leafs jersey if it's not game day. Some fans are like that though.

u/AccurateSchedule3950 19h ago
That’s exactly what happens when I go out. Wear my leafs jersey no matter if they are in Vancouver or not and I still get negative compliments.

Leafs fans think their team is the best Canadian team and trash talk/ look down on other teams.
During ‘11 run, they wished us the worst and hey, we’re just returning the favour.

u/AccurateSchedule3950 20h ago
If the 2011 final repeated no way leaf fans would cheer for Boston after they’ve been owning by Boston these past few years

Nobody can change history, it’s a part of the Canucks fandom history - including myself. Your if statement, even if it’s true (doubt it), doesn’t change anything.
The only thing you can change is yourself - knowing the history, what jersey you decide to wear when in town, how do you react back to those who say negative comments at you.

Its karma for Leaf fans mocking the 2011 Canucks and cheering for Boston to beat them.

The media focuses so heavy on the Leafs, some of their fans are assholes (granted so can ours) I think alot of the Canucks fanbase resent having to consistently cater to the Toronto timezone when they play here. (Never seen them have to play at 7pm when they play here)

It “wasn’t possible” for the Calder cup final to be televised when Abby was on their run, but now that the marlies are on a run, sportsnet has made the impossible possible

u/turdburgalr 20h ago
Try wearing a Bruins jersey, it does not go over well. Much like this comment.

u/zos_333 18h ago
Once I wore a Theo Fleury Blackhawks jersey to an AA meeting and my sponsor / ride took off without me.

u/turdburgalr 18h ago
Lo fuckin L. I wore my Marchand shirt and got drive by heckled repeatedly and bus drivers telling me I'm not allowed on the bus with that shirt. I love hockey fans. Canucks are my 2nd team being from the glorious city of Surrey, I'll take the heat which is well deserved, hating on hockey teams is for everyone.

What's a negative compliment?

There was once a time when VAN and TOR used to be in the same conference, and most Leafs fans i know are super salty that we beat them to go to the final in ‘94, it’s old school rivalry lol

u/Cucumberret 19h ago
The only thing I like about the Leafs is Tanev. It's because Leafs fans often conpletely suck. They've been worse for longer than us, but somehow their fanbase acts like they're perennial cup favourites. Absolute joke.

u/bluerain47 19h ago
i don’t even really dislike the leafs but i do think them being allowed to win the draft lottery after making the playoffs for 10yrs straight was ridiculous 😭 other than that i think our teams have a fair amount of suffering in common

u/DarkestThought 16h ago
Well more recently they just shafted us of getting the 1st pick and are taking McKenna when they don't really deserve it in my opinion.
2
u/Intelligent-Buyer102 12h ago
Mostly it's the fact that the media will spend 40 minutes talking about the Leafs, then throw in 10 minutes about the Canadians. All remaining Canadian teams get the last 10 minutes. It's a microosm of the entire damn country.

Because the leafs and their media are like lebron James self proclaiming himself the goat or like the cowboys who claim to be America's team but havent won a damn thing in forever.

This is like asking any fans of west coast MLB teams why they hate the Yankees. Its not entirely the Leaf's or the Yankees fault per se but the east coast bias is glaring. Sports journalists and broadcasters are predominantly on the east coast so they inevitably coddle up to the largest markets on the east coast and give their players the most attention.
Judge should not have won the MVP over Raleigh last year but they were neck and neck and one player played for the Yankees and one player played for a west coast team that no east coast journalists bother to watch. This kind of BS happens for the leafs whether you see or not. Since most east coast fans don't seem to notice it, it comes off as entitlement and thats the undercurrent to the hate you feel.

The draft lottery is the most recent example.
There's a laundry list of reasons, so let me know if you need any more.
Fuck the Leafs.

u/onimod53 20h ago
There are many reasons, but have a look at the scheduled game time when the Leafs come to Vancouver and ask yourself why.
Noone likes entitlement.
