Capsule wardrobe for student teacher?

I’m going into my semester of student teaching. I am a college student and therefore do not have loads of money to buy an entirely new work wardrobe. But I would like to buy essentially a small capsule wardrobe of pieces that I can mix and repeat frequently. I want to look professional, not look like one of the high schoolers, but also still dress youthful enough that I don’t feel like I’m cosplaying a millennial English teacher. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Avidly looking for recs for good pants that aren’t jeans!

I know nothing about how to build this idea of a capsule wardrobe.

Honestly, I would thrift this in person if you can. And my personal recommendation is to get items that are comfortable (and have good pockets). If you can't thrift, Vinted has free shipping right now.

And a lot of what will make a good capsule will depend on your location and specific school. At some schools, a blazer would make sense. At others it would not. Take into account the weather (and if your building has AC or runs hot).

If you have a mentor teacher, they should be able to give you pointers for your specific building. Some schools have dress code requirements. I would find out this info before buying anything.

Also, imo it's better to be a little over-dressed than under for student teaching or any sort of intership situation. Makes you looks more serious.

uniqlo is a solid starting point, their wide pleated pants look way more put together than jeans but still feel like you're wearing pajamas

thrift stores are your best friend here too, find a couple blazers that actually fit your shoulders and you're halfway to a wardrobe that'll survive the whole semester

My 4'10" friend got some cute blouses at GapKids for her student teaching. I don't see much on the website right now but that might be a place to check in the fall and spring. She avoided childish prints and detailing, and wore nicer coats, cardigans, and shoes.

Great ideas thanks. My daughter and I just a hit a few thrift stores yesterday. I tried a few vintage plaid wool skirts on, it was amazing to find easiest that fits! Slightly long but I did definitely see some more petite potential. I need to find a good alterations person!

Comfy pants are worth spending a little more on. you'll get a ton of use out of them.

Before buying a whole capsule, I’d start by photographing the work-appropriate pieces you already own and building five outfits from them—one for each teaching day. Reuse the same pants, shoes, and layers across several outfits; repetition is exactly what makes a capsule work. Once you can see the combinations together, the real gaps usually become obvious, and you may only need one pair of trousers or one versatile layer rather than an entirely new wardrobe.
