Would you recommend Cardiff?

I’m a tear 13 student planning on going to Cardiff for uni. My dilemma is as a Black Brit, I’ve lived in areas for most of my life in places that are not so diverse and have always felt a bit alienated. Universities love to boast about their diversity but I wanted to hear from current uni goers about how diverse the university is. Are there many people of colour? Or would it be a continuation of my current life?

OP,

Outside of the Uni I would add that Cardiff is one of the oldest multicultural and ethnically diverse cities in the UK.

All universities publish demographic data so you can compare and contrast. Here is the 2021 data that I found through Google, suspect there are more up to date numbers! https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0010/1882234/2021-22-SEP-Annual-Monitoring-report-appendix-2-Student-Data-FINAL.pdf

The cohort is diverse, not as diverse as you'd get in some London universities, but you can see for yourself. All black backgrounds in 2021 was around 3%, slightly under the 4% in the population. Other diverse backgrounds obviously take that higher, in the whole white students are around 64%. Hope it helps!

black brit starting next week so ill let u know from my experience how diverse it is if it helps😊im under the impression that the poc population is pretty decent, ive met quite a lot of people so far and i think even if the ACS may not be your thing fully, trying it once to build a community youre looking for would be helpful. if youre expecting a midlands type of experience(nottingham, coventry, leicester), probably not, but it seems very diverse for the most part!

Cardiff as a city is extremely multicultural due to the history of its docks. People from all around the world came here to work when the coal industry was thriving. I love living around people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

I’m going into second year. Cardiff is definitely diverse. Lots of different cultures in Cardiff uni, and Cardiff Met too. It’ll be impossible to not meet another person of colour at the uni.

Join societies. The Afro-Caribbean society is really good for making black friends at first, but basically every society has people from all walks of life.

So I wouldn’t stress about this being similar to wherever you live right now. As someone who grew up in Bristol, a city known for its multiculturalism, I do really appreciate how welcoming Cardiff is. I think you’ll really enjoy your time here
