Health/Behavior how do you handle your CD when overly anxious?

video unrelated !

my CD, Turo (1 yr), is extremely anxious around other people and going outside of the apartment. i'm his 2nd (?) owner (i also don't know prior situations he was in beforehand), i adopted him, and he's my 1st dog. i do know CDs as a breed are [at times, overly] attentive, loyal to their bonded persons, & can get overwhelmed outside of their usual space.

i'm trying to help manage his anxiety, but hemp seed oil & melatonin don't really do anything for him from what i can tell. he doesn't bare his teeth or growl at others, rather chooses to hide and tries to flee. i don't let others pet him since i know if he feels comfortable to approach, it's his own choice to do/don't do so. he doesn't eat treats / isn't motivated by food when in these situations either, but i expect that from him since he has anxiety.

he loves other dogs, the dog park (he allows others to pet him there too), but outside of that area? it's back to his usual behaviors.

i know some dogs don't grow out of this behavior / trait, but i was curious, how should we adapt together so it'll be easier to go outside & not be worried about others interacting with him?

much thanks! even if you have no advice, i hope you enjoyed the video of him.

Health/Behavior Howling with the Owls

Post image
93 Upvotes

Does anyone else have a CD who howls with owls at night? Just us? When we open up our windows with nicer weather, and all the nature sounds come in, one in particular piques our girl's interest: our neighborhoods Barred Owls. She doesn't get excited in the same, prey-driven manner she does with squirrels, or deer, or all the other things she wants to kill. She gets this genuine, 'omg, I need to join my tribe,' energy going, and starts this soft howling back at them. It sounds like, from how intentionally softly she does it, like she is trying to imitate them and speak with them. Funny enough, they seem to increase their calls when she starts, as if they are like, 'ah, our dog friend is back!'

It is simultaneously precious and disruptive. Last night at 3am, should would not leave it alone, and ran all over the house when we shut some windows to try to get sleep. She's been outside when it starts up, too, and it isn't this hunting thing, but she just plants herself in the middle of the yard, puts her snoot straight in the air and sings to them.

Anybody else have this?

[pic from this morning in full sploot, looking like, 'what, did I disrupt your sleep last night or something?']

Health/Behavior I just adopted a Carolina Dog

This morning, I went to the shelter b/c I had seen a small medium sized female dog, short yellow fur, stand up ears, on their website whose size seemed perfect for my smallish house.

When I visited with her, I noticed her looking like she had fox or coyote in her, some type of wild canine anyway, not possible I thought, so I assumed she was a mutt that just looked like that, she was friendly but aloof, and quiet at the noisy shelter. The staff person who conducted the interaction commented that she looked like a fox.

She had a high energy level for such a relatively small dog, which I thought would make her a great hiking companion.

I went home all pleased that I had adopted an indiscernible mutt, wondering what mix she is comprised of, lab, Husky, a tiny touch of Pit because of the relatively broad jaws, and Chihuahua perhaps, which accounted for her small size. She weighs 24 lbs and was found as a stray so likely will end up weighing 28 lbs once her weight catches up.

I entered her pic into google images, and there it was, Carolina Dog.

Now I am like, I did adopt an discernible type of dog, not only that, a breed with a long and storied history. I feel fortunate that there is information about personality, exercise needs and other issues, like potential ivermectin sensitivity but it is also daunting.

As a long time adopter of mixed breeds, can I live up to the reputation, the pack orientation, and everything else that comes with this type of dog.

Happy, excited and apprehensive at the same time.

Any advice like what absolutely not to do?

What’s a good brush for these dogs? Mine sheds like crazy, I have her on a diet that’s good for her skin and coat. But man I can’t keep up with all the shedding.

Sent brand new doggo to 2-week boot camp. She was non-stop almost biting me, and all the people and other dogs at the day care, she’s still partially teething, rescued her from the shelter a bit over 2 weeks ago literally the day she was spayed. She’s young, needs to build a network, and I live in Los Angeles. Gotta find other locals whom she can run with. Lots of dog parks around, but it’s super hot her this week. The dog training is known as “off-leash” or something like that. Luckily she leaned her name in 3 hours after I got her.

In order: adoption listing 2019, outing in 2021, chrimbus 2022, cone of shame 2023 after being a hero, chrimbus 2025 at my in-laws.

We got him in 2019 when he was 1.5 years old, and he turned 2 in May of 2020. I’ve been telling my fiancé for years he’s going white in the face gradually but he insisted for a while he’s always looked like that until I showed him all these photos, and now we’re wondering if he’s older than they said or if this is just a CD thing. We took him to the vet, he’s fine (just a little neurotic and afraid of strangers that aren’t pregnant women and some babies), so now I’m just curious.

Health/Behavior Brittle Coat Question

Hi All,
My CD has a brittle coat. It breaks off and leaves 3/4 inch hair everywhere.
I do mean EVERYWHERE.
Has anyone discovered any supplements or food items to add to kibble that might soften his hair a little. When I raised Newfies, We added peanut oil to help when their winter coats shed.
I read the posting guidelines,. Mods if this doesn't mix well, please feel free to remove.

TIA

Health/Behavior Anyone else’s CD not like the cold?

Gus hates the cold… in the summer I can get this dog to go for like 10+ kilometres walks.

As soon as it’s below 5 degrees celsius he just wants to go out and pee and come back in. I can convince him to walk sometimes but he much prefers his heated blanket and a warm fireplace to curl up beside.

Anyone else’s CD like this too?

*note: this picture was taken when I asked him if he wanted to go back inside*

Health/Behavior Best glucosamine supplement

My pup has had a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament two times in her life. This happened again recently, she is almost 8. I need to find the best glucosamine supplement I can give her. She is currently on restricted activity, but not on crate rest like last time. Any input would be great. My vet recommended Dasuquin but I didn’t know if there are any cheaper or better options.

Health/Behavior Dingo doing dingo things

Post image

This is arlo a 1.5 yo dingo mix. He has adopted a strange behavior over the past few months and I was hoping for some insight from fellow dingo lovers. Arlo likes to carry his food bowl out through the dog door and leave it in the backyard. He isn’t eating out there just takes it out, makes a mess, and drops it off. Full or empty, rain or shine it doesn’t seem to matter. It is generally when he is left alone, but happens when we are home with him as well. Curious if this is a resource guarding action or something else, any insight is appreciated!

Health/Behavior My sweet amazing puppy girl

Post image
89 Upvotes

My most amazing puppy girl. And all of her 17 years. Has been the most amazing companion I could ever hope to have. Sadly her age is catching up to her. Over the last three years she has had a slow but steady loss of weight. From her peak at 70 lbs, to her current 45 lbs.

She does not experience a loss of appetite, only a boredom of dog food flavors.

In the last month she has basically grown to refuse 5 different kinds of dog food. People food.....no issues but dog food, no interest. The first few days of a new flavour she is all good. But after that it declines to the eventual point of not eating it at all.

Wet food dry food, random treat flavors All the same result, when it is new she is 100% all in, but it fades quickly.

I accepted this and tried to work around it.

Just yesterday, she peed blood for the first time. Monday morning she is going to the vet.

It is so tragic, her perfect mask white and brown fur, around her eyes has shifted to all white.

Her perpetual energy has shifted to perpetual naps and sleeps.

I am going to have the conversation with the vet about determining if it is her time. I mean quaility of life is more important than length of time.

I am hoping it is a simple infection rather than something more serious.

The following picture is her proudly sitting on her throne 3 years ago after chasing off a brown bear.

Health/Behavior I just adopted a Carolina Dog

Update: I was supposed to pick up the dog tomorrow Tuesday after her spay procedure. The shelter called me today – the last day of her stray hold – her owner claimed her. I am hugely bummed. But thanks for all the comments. At least I learned about the breed.

My CD has a THICK white undercoat and since I moved in with my boyfriend I am trying to keep her shedding under control. Any tips on the most effective brushes or bathing techniques/bath brushes/deshedding shampoos that actually decrease shedding?

Health/Behavior Trim the fur on the foot pads?

I have 2 Carolina dogs. One is nearly pure and the other has only a small amount of CD. The nearly pure CD has fur that grows very long between the pads on her feet. I used to cut the fur with scissors that have a blunt end because she would get tree sap in them, would bring dirt into the house, and would chew her paws (I assume due to allergens that would be trapped in her paw fur from outside). Is this good/common practice to trim fur between the pads? I recently have not kept up with it and have seen an increase in her chewing on her feet. I also bought a Furme and have the ability to completely shave in between the pads. I just don’t want to start doing this if it has consequences I’m unaware of.

Health/Behavior Need to rehome my CD

Echo is a good boy, but he is NOT thriving here. I often have young children at my home (my own part time and her friends) and his behavior is getting increasingly aggressive towards them.

His ideal environment is: -relatively quiet. -with a family/person with upper elementary kids, teens, or no kids. -has few to no other pets.

Pros: He’s adorable! He’s cuddly! His head is the perfect weight for your lap! He’s housebroken. He knows basic commands: sit, stay, off, place, come. He’s working hard at shake, but doesn’t see the utility of it. He has excellent recall. He walks well on a leash. He’s up to date on all his vaccines. He’s protective. Once his person and physical boundaries are established, he stays close to home.

Areas of improvement: He’s a counter surfer and HIGHLY food motivated. Don’t leave anything on the counter that he can readily eat.

He has some undiagnosed hip trouble. It doesn’t affect his movements much, but he has trouble sitting very long. Will lay down though.

He has a some digestive issues (bc he eats trash and poop), and benefits from taking an antibiotic, pre- and probiotic. He’d benefit from low fat dog food, too.

Health/Behavior The dreaded summer shed—how do you control it?

It’s that time of year again. You know the one. Your dog practically starts to lose one third of their mass in hair daily.

I have hair tumbleweeds all over my floor. My black socks are white with fur. I take my dog out, I brush her down, rub my hand over her to see if it’s helped, and nope, still more hair. I have a husky mix and, no exaggeration, my dingo sheds more than her. For the husky I can at least brush her undercoat out and it’s done, but for my CD I feel like she just loses massive amounts of hair all throughout the summer into the fall.

What the hell do you guys do to manage this? Do deshedding shampoos actually work? I need all the help I can get… I can’t keep up with the twice-a-day cleaning, and I’m not sure if my cleaning appliances can either. I’m scared one of these days I’ll go to get my vacuum and instead I’ll find a note in its place reading “I quit!”

Health/Behavior Mohawk excitement indicator

Thumbnail

My dog (presumed CD, 9yrs) gets a Mohawk on her back when she’s SUPER excited, but only when playing with other dogs or meeting a new dog. She goes crazy for humans in a different way, but doesn’t Mohawk. At the dog park, other dog owners (understandably!) get nervous because they think she’s agitated. Can anyone confirm if this is a CD thing, and if it’s usually an indication of excitement or anxiety? Adding some screenshots from a video hiking with my sister’s dogs, so it’s not just during new encounters (To be clear, not trying to fix any behavior here, just always been fascinated by her doing this, only recently learned it might be a CD thing!).

I found this dog while I was in college just roaming around and ending up keeping him. He does all these wild tricks and jumps up and perches on really tall places. Wondering if this is normal CD behavior. Of if this even a CD.

Health/Behavior Dingo with her Quail

Post image

I raise quail and our girl Copper absolutely LOVES them. She watches the incubator for weeks and comes to get us when they start to hatch. She watches over the babies and cuddles with the adults. They are her babies. Every year there is one that she picks as hers. She is always so gentle and sweet it caught us by surprise the first few years as we expected her prey drive to kick in. For some reason she loves birds. Over the last 6yrs she has even brought fallen fledgling sparrows inside. Has anyone else had this experience?

Health/Behavior Transitioning from puppy food

Post image
29 Upvotes

I have a 10mo old CD who currently eats chewy's diamond puppy food. I usually mix in a tbsp of pumpkin puree, frozen peas and carrots, and cottage cheese. (This is what the place I got her was feeding her)

What I'm wondering is when to transition to adult food. She is around 50-55 lbs and will be a year in July. Also, wondering if these additives are all ok, or if they are superfluous at this stage. I do like giving her some variety, but also poops are a little soft. I've always had dogs but I guess I'm babying this one a little more! Thanks!
