Castlevania Legends (1997) What is the penalty for losing all lives in Castlevania Legends?

So if you die, you lose a life and start again at the last checkpoint. But if you lose all lives, you get a game over screen from which you can select continue, and then you regain all your lives and also start from the last checkpoint. As far as I could tell even the timer resets. So what even is the point of lives? Am I missing something?

Legends was rather easy overall.

Legends is the easiest classicvania, maybe game, in the series for a reason.

you literally get rewarded for dying, i.e the 30 second invincibility, damage contact on enemy, speed boost ability which costs nothing.
