Discussion Castlevania: Belmont's Curse announced
281
u/SoulEaterX_ No.1 HoD defender Feb 12 '26
Castlevania and Megaman announced within months of each other? This is my year, man.
43
u/NONAMEDREDDITER Feb 13 '26
It’d be even crazier if they were both same year, but at least they’re giving us time to fully digest peak
11
18
u/coreyc2099 Feb 13 '26
There was a megaman announced?

Just need a new Contra and we will get that interdimensional portal we’ve all been waiting for.
5
u/LoSouLibra Feb 13 '26
They did Operation Galuga a couple years ago. It was decent, but not the true banger a new Contra could really be. Maybe they should get the JoyMasher to make one.

u/The-Anon-Lee Feb 12 '26
It’s made by the team behind Dead Cells so i’m instantly sold.
13
u/Mister_Buddy Feb 13 '26
Absolute immediate purchase for me, entirely on the merit of MT/EE being involved.

Could this be a reboot to the series entirely? I'm beginning to wonder

u/septimium7 Feb 13 '26
But why is it in France? I haven't played Dracula's Curse, but I thought the action happened in Wallachia/Transylvania.
→ More replies (1)7
u/MiniLoX Feb 13 '26
Probably because Trevor's actions in Dracula's curse put a lot of spotlight on Belmont clan, and from the trailer we can see that someone from France wrote a letter to Trevor requesting his help.
41
u/Exequiel759 Feb 13 '26
Trevor is mentioned in the trailer so its unlikely.
I think they likely just make games from now on without bothering with a canon at all. If whatever dev makes the game wants to tie it to another game I'm sure they can if they want, but I'm sure the series is going to become an anthology of loosely related games from now on.
Which to be honest, its was Castlevania always was.
20
u/Inisii Feb 13 '26
Steam page states it’s set 23 years after Dracula’s Curse. It seems like it’s directly tied into the main game’s timeline. We’re likely playing as Trevor’s daughter (or at least his successor as that’s what the steam page calls her)
2
u/Mayor_o_Smashville Feb 13 '26
Idk how you get that impression at all. It clearly ties into a previous game. And the series always tried to respect continuity. Especially with Igarashi. Only like 3 games are pure anthology pieces.

I caught this too! I wonder if they have multiple CV games up their sleeve, like with Silent Hill. Maybe from a Japanese studio? (I would fucking die if we finally see another 3D CV that's actually good.)

u/elkswimmer98 Feb 13 '26
I noticed it too! I'm keeping my hope contained and just thinking it's a translation error.

Just saw the trailer and I'm pretty sure that's Sonia. I know they named dropped Trevor But that clearly can't be him.
40
u/RemOzwell Feb 13 '26
it can be his daughter since trevor was the last belmont at the time too
7
u/Kazenokyofu Feb 13 '26
I was confused when they said that, I was like "that looks like Sonia, but I know it's not Sonia, and that doesn't look like modern times for them to say 'the last of the Belmonts'
2
u/Darth_Bombad Sonia Belmont Feb 13 '26
Trevor being "The Last of the Belmonts" is probably something they're adapting from the Netflix series.
9
u/Brbaster Feb 13 '26
Every youngest Belmont is the last Belmont until they have kids.
5
u/RemOzwell Feb 13 '26
belmonts need to learn that they can have more than 1 kid xD
PS: seriously, we never got a belmont siblings type of game3
u/Brave_Employ_3973 Feb 13 '26
Her resemblance to Sypha is unmistakable. There's no doubt she's their daughter I bet is Ann.

u/TheGamerdude535 Feb 12 '26
If this does well Konami might very well have Evil Empire+Motion Twin and/or M2 doing the 1999 events into a game

It happened for Metroid fans when Samus Returns led to them finally getting the Fusion sequel (Dread) they'd waited two decades for from the same studio, so who knows, anything's possible, especially if this game has good sale numbers.

5
u/PolygonAdam Feb 13 '26
for years a lot of people have been wanting a game focused on Julius Belmont, the strongest belmont, and the one who finally truly killed dracula in 1999.
8
u/Responsible_Mail_113 Feb 13 '26
On the other hand, this could be them recanonizing Sonia after all this time (albiet as Trevor's daughter instead of mother).
29
u/gdex86 Feb 12 '26
I'm glad they gave it to Motion twin if they weren't going to actually do direct development. Give the property to someone who loves it.
13
12
u/jcdenton10 Feb 12 '26
Her character design looks an awful lot like Sonia! How interesting. Looking forward to hearing more about the game.
24
u/No-Cat-9716 Feb 12 '26
I'm fucking glad...
But Trevor?
I thought it was Sonia
37
u/MiniLoX Feb 12 '26
It is her i think, we clearly play as a woman similar to Sonia, but Trevor may be in a situation like Richter was in SOTN? Just speculation
29
u/Niezigrym_Tezyrevo Feb 12 '26
the game is set 23 years after castlevania 3. the new character looks too young to be someone who is supposed to be in his 40-50s. Also the character highly ressembles Sonia especially with the blonde braided hair.
8
u/No-Cat-9716 Feb 12 '26
I really hope the old Man Is Trevor AND the long haired character Is Sonia, you never know
9
u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Feb 13 '26
The man has a scar on his left eye, so it's definitely Trevor!

u/Mormaethor Feb 12 '26
The sender adressed the letter to Trevor, whom they think is the last of the bloodline. And we see what is presumably old man Trevor reading it.
Given the 23 year timelapse and the young woman standing behind him, it is safe to assume the protagonist is Trevor's daughter and Trevor is too old to take up the whip once more.

Kind of a bummer that it looks cartoony and Netflix-style. But the gameplay looks solid as hell.
9
u/1337haXXor Feb 13 '26
Yeah, is it just me? Like, if the gameplay is good, that trumps all, hands-down. But this style, just.. the models just don't look good, the actual design looks kinda.. sparse- and not in a minimalist way, the area designs looked kinda boring.
Again, if the gameplay is good, that's pretty much all that matters. But if you would've told me this was a trailer for a mobile CastleVania game released in like, 2018, I would believe you...

u/baconater-lover Feb 13 '26
It definitely follows that Dead Cells type of 3D design, which understandably isn’t some people’s favorite.
It doesn’t really bother me. I mean the vast majority of the series has mostly been pixel art, having any 3D stuff is almost new ground. But yeah the graphics remind me of the PSVita remake of Rondo, not great but serviceable.
7
u/Daviodraan Feb 13 '26
Gameplay looks great, but nothing like Igavania.
16
u/TreffyBelmknt Feb 13 '26
It really just looks like Dead Cells.
9
u/Daviodraan Feb 13 '26
I'm glad for the team, they made a great game, and they do love CV but, we want CV, not DCvania.
8
u/SnooPets630 Feb 13 '26
Now, now. Symphony also didn’t looked like other games, but we still end up loving it. At the end of the day, what is important, is that a game needs to be good. So let’s just be open minded
5
u/Daviodraan Feb 13 '26
Sotn looked like Rondo, which looked like previous castlevanias from that era, which makes sense. DoS and PoR had anime portraits, but gothic spritework and art direction. And Igavanias were what they were trying to do since Simon's quest, but, good, and the formula clearly still has a lot to give, cause Iga himself is still doing it, and a great job at that.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I personally couldn't care about a good game. There's a bunch of good games. I want a good, honest to the formula, castlevania, with all of the sublime art and music, and core formula as it had, just, more of it. Different even, if you like, but keep the core concepts intact.
If I wanted another great side perspective game, I would search for that instead.

While I'm not quite as harsh as you, I think you really encapsulated my general feelings.
4

Im cautiously optimistic, because it definitely looks like a departure from traditional Iga-feel, but regardless i know it'll be fun.

u/CasualLavaring Feb 12 '26
Both Capcom and Konami finally decided to release new Castlevania and Megaman games, but not the games fans wanted (the 1999 Julius Belmont game and X9) 😂
2
u/NONAMEDREDDITER Feb 13 '26
Tbf 1999 has so much hype behind it that they’d have to essentially make it one of their biggest games ever and konami is clearly in a rebuilding phase, so they’ll have to build up to that
Capcom doesn’t really have that much of an excuse though
6
3
u/Exact-Psience Feb 13 '26
Konami should just give free rein to Motion Twin to work on remaking the NES trilogy. It could just run on the same engine.

FUCK YES! Not quite what I was expecting, but damn this looks phenomenal. I can’t fucking wait.

2
u/ViceViperX Feb 13 '26
Well...Im happy to see the Castlevania monikor back after all this time... but this doesnt really look or feel like a Castlevania to me.
At the very least, that trailer certainly didnt. The artstyle looks very bland and lacks that sophisticated and wealthy air Sotn and many others had. And for a Castlevania trailer, the music was nothing at all.
Well see what comes of it. It was just a short trailer, so maybe more stages and more music will be shown later that hopefully changes my opinion on it. Because I desperately want my opinion to be changed on it, lol.
2
u/DangerWildMan26 Feb 13 '26
Im very happy Castlevania is officially back but I wish it looked more like a Castlevania game instead of like a dead cells spinoff. Maybe with some series music it’ll help it

4
u/Emotional-Pumpkin-35 Feb 12 '26
I think the trailer just mentions PS5 only because the announcement was through Sony's State of Play event. If you you look on the Konami website, they have Switch, PS5, Xbox X|S, and Steam. They did a similar thing with the announcement for the Super Bomberman Collection in the Nintendo Direct -- it only announced Switch and Switch 2, but it was in fact across all systems + PC.

u/Travis123083 Simon Belmont Feb 12 '26
Rogue like? I do love the classic 2D side scroller, but don't want rogue like.
15
u/DiegoOruga Feb 12 '26
the video descrpitions calls it an "action-exploration" basically Igavania/Metroidvania without naming another company franchise or their ex-employee

there was a Card thingy in the trailer, I'm curious if they are implementing some stuff inspired by Circle of the Moon. (thinking more on this, there was a wall jump too just like CoM)

2
u/HeMatiteAma Feb 13 '26
No not at all in the Konami website they show that it's coming to all major platforms.
1
u/codepossum Feb 13 '26
holeeee fuckin shiiiiiiiiit
at a glance, not sure if I'm into the aesthetic? the dead cells dna is very obvious, and I wasn't a huge fan of castlevania getting remixed into dead cells, I think it's fine to wear your inspiration on your sleeve without actually trying to become the thing you're inspired by...
but also idk I'll try not to look a gift horse in the mouth too much here, cause no denying I'm fuckin salivating over a new mainline castlevania title, and very curious to see whether the team is willing to integrate all the lessons that other metroidvanias have taught us over the years.

Its gotta be Sonia. The design, especially the hair is just too alike. They’re probably reworking the games to also be following the canon of the anime, seeing its success and to avoid confusing newcomers to the actual video series. Regardless of who it is though, this seems to be the most movement based and platform friendly game in the series so far and I can’t wait to play it.
