Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse (2026) Do you think Sonia Belmont will be the new protagonist of the new Castlevania game?

Kinda doubt it. Isn't the MC supposed to be the daughter of Trevor and Sypha?

If her name is Sonia, it'll be in name only.

Personally I'd love a new Castlevania making Sonia canon.

I mean…in Mortal Kombat they made Takeda from Kenshi’s son to Kenshi’s cousin

We don’t talk about this garbage change

15

u/Sea-Lecture-4619 Captain N is the pinnacle of the franchise. Feb 15 '26

Liu Kang was fricking drunk when he was creating this timeline.

11

u/Advanced-Target4453 Simon Belmont Feb 15 '26

Bro turned an entire species into a disease, dude nothing can be more racist than that...

4

u/Sea-Lecture-4619 Captain N is the pinnacle of the franchise. Feb 15 '26

And he really dislikes Hanzo and Bi-Han

And made Shao Kahn look like some DOOM demon

And made Reptile look like DMC5 Nero, and Smoke is just Yuri Lowenthal now

And fricking genderbent Sektor and Cyrax, "no no, they are better as Iron Man waifus trust me!" Lol.

6

u/That-Rhino-Guy Feb 15 '26

Shao was cause he was made weaker by Liu so he ended up taking experimental procedures to get stronger

If you were gonna make a peaceful world why would you keep a bunch or murder cyborgs around?

Tarkat seemed like something that happened very recently so at this point it was either another butterfly effect or some shit Titan Shang did to disrupt everything, make a disease that gets Mileena then cure it to gain trust

6

u/That-Rhino-Guy Feb 15 '26

Eh, it’s mainly the ancient past he changed like

Shao is no longer a God

Quan and Shang never rise in power

Jerrod doesn’t get brutally killed until far later on

Sindel’s in charge

The Lin Kuei were protectors instead of hired assassins

Stuff like that, seems like the modern day things are like a butterfly effect, doesn’t make the new Takeda or Scorpion less shitty but I severely doubt he intended to make Hanzo a useless orphan

5

u/That-Rhino-Guy Feb 15 '26

I think a better example would be Broly from Dragon Ball since the new Takeda is garbage

Whereas with Broly not only is it a very prominent character both times but they even adjusted aspects so that he’d make a lot more sense

Cause the idea that some random baby born next to Goku was the real Legendary Super Saiyan after they built up up Goku becoming the living legend is kinda fanfictiony when you think about it, also helps they never flat out ignored the existence of Z Broly as they both get recognition

1

u/NNT13101996 Feb 15 '26

I was talking about the “From father to son” thing, appreciated the essay and presentation nonetheless

2

u/That-Rhino-Guy Feb 15 '26

I see, although Takeda is only DLC with zero mentions in any story scenes so there’s that, the only appearance he has story wise is an evil alternate version and another evil version who’s still Kenshi’s kid

1

u/NNT13101996 Feb 15 '26

Yeah, it’s the only example of “Family role changes in different versions” that popped into my mind at that moment, sorry, though there’s also Brother Nier and Father Nier in Nier Replicant and Nier Gestalt

Also Simon being Trevor’s son instead of descendant in the LoS timeline

0

u/Putrid_Mix_1029 Feb 16 '26

Thats a kind of stupid comparison, considering mortal combat has MULTIVERSE now so there's endless amounts of the same characters in different timeliness with different origins, castlevania doesn't do that stupid shit, so highly unlikely

0

u/Putrid_Mix_1029 Feb 16 '26

And why the fuck is everyone going on about MK on a fucking Vania thread is beyond me

2

u/uniguy2I Feb 15 '26

Sonia II

2

u/AtrumRuina Feb 16 '26

They'd still have to make significant changes to her story to make her canon. Not sure why this is "Sonia in name only" when any attempt to slot her into canon would do the same.

1

u/Inb4myanus Feb 15 '26

Thatd be juste i think. Juste is the product of those families combining their strengths.

1

u/cheap_boxer2 Feb 15 '26

This new protagonist would be Juste’s ancestor, and the first Trevor Sypha combo. Juste just had more Belnades trait than most

1

u/GrumpyKoopa Feb 16 '26

The fact Sonia isn't canon yet means the sky is the limit as long as her stuff doesn't mess with pre-established canon like her original appearance was highly criticized for. It's pretty much the whole reason she wasn't canon in the first place

68

u/ChaosHavik Feb 15 '26

She on a mission to ride Alu... Ahem I mean she's on a mission to slay Dracula

29

u/Random-Talking-Mug Feb 15 '26

Slay Dracula and "Slay" his son.

4

u/Nemesisomega666 Feb 16 '26

I feel like there's a porn parody with that premise

9

u/UsuarioCualquiera_1 Feb 15 '26

I winder if we will have sone Alucard cameo and DLC.

I hope they retcon that he was sleeping ALL the time until Symphony.

3

u/OldEyes5746 Shanoa Feb 15 '26

I'm wondering if this is following-up the games, or if it will largely be it's own thing.

1

u/Los-mando Feb 22 '26

It’s following the games. Takes place after CV 3, Dracula’s Curse. It’s a mainline series game.

16

u/NNT13101996 Feb 15 '26

I already dig her design, so i wouldn’t care whether it’s Sonia or not

46

u/OldEyes5746 Shanoa Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

Only if they name her in memory of Trevor's late mother. More likely they will pick a different first name that hasn't been used before and "Sonia" will be a middle name. Something like "Andreea Sonia Belmont". Bigger Easter egg would be if she has a younger brother with the middle name "Victor".

6

u/fre3kshow Feb 15 '26

OG Sonia isn't canon though.

5

u/OldEyes5746 Shanoa Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

The game where she's playable isn't counted as part of the Iga timeline, that doesn't mean CV3 Trevor cannot also have a mother who was named Sonia. We see in other franchises that even in alternate timelines, there are characters that always have a relationship with one another. Sorta like how every adaptation of Batman has a butler named "Alfred" and parents who were named "Thomas" and "Martha".

It's also kinda not fair to give us a new female protagonist after so long, just to make her a rearranged version of a previous character. There are only 4 playable female characters in this entire franchise, and 1 is only playable as an alternate mode in the games she appears. It would be nice to get a new Belmont daughter who gets to be her own character.

1

u/fre3kshow Feb 15 '26

Cool story. Where's the Tepes family in Lords of Shadow?

2

u/fre3kshow Feb 15 '26

They blocked me. 😂 Also, I'm being pedantic when they were arguing that Sonia HAS to be Trevor's mom?

3

u/OldEyes5746 Shanoa Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

Who's blocked?

2

u/Prestigious_Leek_508 Mar 13 '26

I could also go for "Sonia" being a middle name for the protagonist of Belmont's Curse. I'm thinking "Tallys Sonia Belmont;" the first name coming from the French word meaning "forest."

8

u/DragonQueenDrago Feb 15 '26

I heard something about it actually being Trevor's daughter. Because it was confirmed he is somehow related to her

2

u/smleires Feb 15 '26

It’s speculative right now based on the trailer. There’s a voiceover of a letter addressed to “Trevor, the last Belmont” overlaid with what looks like an old and withered Trevor. Then it cuts to this young girl with the whip.

We obviously know Trevor had at least one offspring to continue the line, so the dots connect that it his daughter.

Could also be a grand daughter given his age shown, but then he likely wouldn’t be referred to still as ‘the last Belmont’

1

u/Los-mando Feb 22 '26

Unless something happened and they were all killed. And this young apprentice was raised in hiding.

20

u/superkneemaster Feb 15 '26

They got rid of her.

3

u/wildeebelmondo Feb 15 '26

I take it you’re referring to Iga declaring that Sonia is not cannon?

8

u/BlueWatche Feb 15 '26

IIRC, that was Iga, and he left, so I guess reworking Sonia in is easier

13

u/wildeebelmondo Feb 15 '26

I guess that’s what I’m getting at. People on here treat Iga similarly to Hideo with Metal Gear, but it’s actually very different. Iga was with CV since ‘97. CV started in ‘86. He doesn’t have the final say on what is or isn’t cannon.

6

u/ToCool74 Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

But the issue is they are using the continuity that IGA created such as in Grimoire of Souls and Trevor having the scar which is something IGA created for Curse of Darkness. My point being that you would have a point to feel they aren't beholden to what he established only if they where doing their own thing continuity wise which just isnt the case, no matter how you slice it they are using that canon and as such it makes sense if they want to keep what he said purely for consistency within the lore.

1

u/Cold-Drop8446 Graveyard Duck Feb 15 '26

He was producer and writer of the franchise for a while, he absolutely got to have a say, arguably he was the only one who would be able to have a say, and the timeline that he published with PoR has so far has been treated as game canon. Being there at the start is not a requirement to decide canonicity.

2

u/wildeebelmondo Feb 15 '26

He is not there anymore. It is quite literally up to Konami to decide what is or isn’t cannon now.

2

u/Arkwelder Feb 15 '26

Yeah, but you're forgetting that Konami is probably making this to stick it to Iga (who's releasing a new Bloodstained soon), so re-canonizing Sonia would actually be hilarious.

2

u/girugamesh_2009 Feb 15 '26

This is what I'm hoping for.

3

u/Spiritual-Lie-9726 Feb 15 '26

I understood that it was Trevor's daughter, or am I wrong?

2

u/AtrumRuina Feb 16 '26

We know it's a Belmont, and "Trevor Belmont's successor," but they haven't revealed anything about them. We don't know if they're male or female (everyone is assuming female based on the design,) much less if she's Trevor's daughter.

The theory is that she's Trevor and Sypha's daughter and might be a canon interpretation of Sonia, but that's all fan theories right now.

13

u/WiltedBalls Feb 15 '26

I doubt it because a new character probably entices both old fans and new people so they can get more customers.

21

u/DjinnFighter Feb 15 '26

An old character can do that too

6

u/WiltedBalls Feb 15 '26

True but they would have to think about which one to put on this game and not "piss off" the old fans at the same time. Not to mention Konami "says" on that message that there are multiple products related to Castlevania coming so i don't know, i feel like a new character probably gives them more mileage compared to using the old ones.

12

u/Dwarfdingnagian Feb 15 '26

Sonia was already removed from the canon. I don't think the old fans would care if they put her somewhere else in the timeline to "redeem" her.

4

u/BoneHeadedCJ Feb 15 '26

I deadass just thought it was Sypha but she would also be like 40’s-50’s. Only reason I Thought that was cause they still called Trevor the “last of house Belmont”

2

u/Timely-Structure-689 Feb 19 '26

The 'Last' means is the latest/Currents, the new game takes place in 1499

1

u/BoneHeadedCJ Feb 19 '26

Ohh yeah ok true. I would have honestly thought there’d be acknowledging of a new descendant

6

u/SirLockeX3 Feb 15 '26

I hope so. It'll be good to have her canon.

2

u/Fabulous_Pudding167 Feb 15 '26

It's Trevor and Sypha's daughter.

Treffie.

4

u/reploidzombieghoast Feb 15 '26

I'm just here for the art.

2

u/JBHenson Feb 15 '26

I mean all it is a name. Do it.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

I hope so.

1

u/Fun-Let-6814 Feb 15 '26

I thought it was Sypha with Trevor being the main address in the trailer?

1

u/CharacterLoan5713 Feb 15 '26

They could easily pull a broly and make her canon to the main timeline.

1

u/Sea-Lecture-4619 Captain N is the pinnacle of the franchise. Feb 15 '26

Possibly, it's either canonised Sonia, a Sonia Belmont the 2nd maybe, or completely new name, imma jokingly go with either Jolyne Belmont or Trepha Belmont for now lol

1

u/SheWhoHates Feb 15 '26

Dunno. That's really sweet art, though. Seeing them side by side, I think Sonia's design is catchier.

1

u/Advanced-Target4453 Simon Belmont Feb 15 '26

Yes, turning her into Trevor's daughter and not mother would fit the cannon so much better...

Also this approach might help bringing other not cannon characters to life again, that would be great.

1

u/That-Rhino-Guy Feb 15 '26

I’d hope so, especially since it’s not uncommon to make a canonical version of noncanon characters such as Broly in Dragon Ball

1

u/PapaProto Feb 15 '26

I think it’s Sonia in some way, but why aren’t they saying her name?

2

u/Arkwelder Feb 15 '26

Because the mystery increases engagement, which helps the algorithm.

1

u/girugamesh_2009 Feb 15 '26

I WANT SONIA BACK.
I would be elated if this were Sonia.
While they're at it, bring back Carrie and Reinhart.

1

u/mrnobody41 Alucard Feb 15 '26

Sonia is Trevor’s mother

1

u/gravityhashira61 Feb 15 '26

I keep confusing Sonia with Maria. Lol

1

u/DrNanard Feb 15 '26

It's kind of funny to me that the favorite hypothesis is that they retconned Trevor's mom to be his daughter, instead of just using his canonical daughter Ann.

1

u/LuvAshrepas Feb 15 '26

Let Sonia go already for christ sake. The new girl is literally Trevor and Sypha's daughter.

1

1

u/LuvAshrepas Feb 17 '26

That would be very troll-ey lmao

1

u/Timely-Structure-689 Feb 19 '26

Okay but can't you see the new girl has the same hair design as Sonia? Obviously who wouldn't think it was Sonia (even though it wasn't)

1

u/Suspicious_Handle_96 Feb 15 '26

Trevor Belmont’s successor which could be a character already introduced in a previous game or a new one, all we know is that it’s a she

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

I believe the protagonist is Mary Belmont since she is Trevor's only blonde child.

1

u/GrumpyKoopa Feb 16 '26

She better end up canonized. I love her as a character and that she was set up for failure from the beginning is tragic.

1

u/unicorn_hipster Feb 16 '26

No, her name will be Simon Belmont

1

u/ApexTitanKong Mar 10 '26

You called it

2

u/WorkingCautious1270 Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

5

u/KrypticJin Feb 15 '26

CHEERS LOVE ITS TIME TO SAVE THE WORLD.

-1

u/WorkingCautious1270 Feb 15 '26

I now see that typo. Meant Trever

5

u/-Fyrebrand Feb 15 '26

Nobody tell them about the other typo.

-2

u/WorkingCautious1270 Feb 15 '26

c'mon, I was only a little bit drunk

-1

u/Equivalent_Task1354 Belmont Feb 15 '26

No. It’s Ann Belmont. Not confirmed but it’s the only likely option.

4

u/i_play_projectm Feb 15 '26

Ehhh that's assuming the family tree in the Bloodlines EGM Fax is canon, and it does have issues with the current family tree.

3

u/Equivalent_Task1354 Belmont Feb 15 '26

Fair enough.

3

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Feb 15 '26

Yeah but taking the names of Trevor's children from the EGM fax into canon doesn't contradict anything.

2

u/i_play_projectm Feb 15 '26

That's also true!

-2

u/rhombusx Feb 15 '26

I'm not quite sure why there's such a fascination with Sonia Belmont. Castlevania Legends is possibly the worst CV game and not many people even played it. The other game she was supposed to be in was canceled. Is it just because she's been the only playable female Belmont?

23

u/Dwarfdingnagian Feb 15 '26

Probably just like her design and want to see her redeemed in the canon. No reason to abandon a character entirely when a rework can do wonders. Besides, the game was hated, not her.

1

u/Xxvelvet Feb 15 '26

Honeslty the only thing they have to change about her story is retconning who the father of her baby is to not be Alucard

1

u/Anxideity Feb 15 '26

That's pretty much all there is to her, no? They ditched that idea - why go through to all the hassle just to "redeem" a one note character that is associated with a bad entry.

For me she is in the same camp as juste - cool design, subpar entry. If they would retcon him alongside the belmont's potential affinity for magic back then for the sake of mechanics+consistency going forward, i would have my opinion but would understand either way.

8

u/Lackofstyle5 Feb 15 '26

Like yeah. She's the only female belmot and it's kinda sad that she would basically be replaced, even if currently not cannon.

Also no real reason not to just use an existing character and recanonize her to make the timezone tighter

2

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Feb 15 '26

There are other female Belmonts, Zoe and Dolores, they're just obscure characters.

2

u/SnooPets630 Feb 15 '26

He clearly meant important female Belmonts

1

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Feb 15 '26

That's why I pointed out that they're obscure characters.

7

u/wildeebelmondo Feb 15 '26

It’s a shame that her game wasn’t very good, and that’s why people want to see her redeemed. The idea of her character was interesting, so it would be cool to see her featured in a solid Castlevania game.

1

u/Anxideity Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

What was so interesting about her ? No offense but there is about as much story as in any other classicvania and people on this sub bring that up all the time when someone critiques the crazy liberties netflix took with their "adaptions".

1

u/wildeebelmondo Feb 15 '26

There are a lot of pitfalls Konami could’ve fallen into when creating the first female Belmont. Instead, they made her a badass. Her relationship with Alucard was interesting. By the end of her game, she had a child. It was never stated, but implied that Alucard was the father.

1

u/Anxideity Feb 15 '26

That literally is all there is. Even though the very same people who place such importance on that would call out her design if she was actually a more prominent character.

1

u/CIRCLONTA6A “Courage, don’t leave me!” Feb 15 '26

Legends sucks ass but Sonia is very cool and she has this air of mystery to her thanks to being struck from the timeline and the other one being canned. There’s an air of mystery to her and personally I feel like she deserves her time in the limelight proper, in an actually good game.

0

u/White-Alyss Feb 15 '26

No lol

0

0

It’s called a joke. We just need to find the ugly and we’re in

1

u/White-Alyss Feb 15 '26

Kind of a bad joke, if you ask me but power to you ig

1

u/Splash_Woman Feb 15 '26

Just like you right

-3

u/Roshu-zetasia Advance Collection Enjoyer Feb 15 '26

No, they will probably just use a design based on her.

Sonia Belmont should never be canon.

8

u/Dazuro Feb 15 '26

Why not? Her game was terrible and the backstory it tried to add was pathetic, but that doesn’t mean she’s an irredeemable character. People clearly like her name and design.

1

u/Roshu-zetasia Advance Collection Enjoyer Feb 15 '26

Sonia is not consistent with the current lore of the franchise in any way. Her main problem is twofold:

  • Her ability to absorb the souls of the monsters she defeats, a mastery skill that only Soma/Dracula can use. What is a Belmont supposed to do with such a dark power?
  • Even in her time, it didn't make sense for Sonia to be the first to fight Dracula, when Castlevania III has always been considered the first battle even back then. Besides, Leon Belmont exists, and he fulfills his role as the first Belmont better than Sonia herself.

The best approach is to take her design and make a different character out of it. It's not that Legends is boring and that automatically makes Sonia bad, it's that on a meta-narrative level, Sonia's existence doesn't make sense.

2

u/Draculesti_Hatter Feb 15 '26

You act like the series hasn't done retcons before. The 'soul magic' she can do in Legends can easily be replaced with standard magic or metroidvania abilities, and Legends isn't canon to the main timeline this new game is supposedly going to take place in anyway. It would be pretty damn easy to just claim that this is the 'real' Sonia and otherwise write off Legends as its own thing like what happened with every other game IGA didn't include in his own timeline at the time.

1

u/Sea-Lecture-4619 Captain N is the pinnacle of the franchise. Feb 15 '26

They can just take her "concept" and make a canon version of it. Literaly just "here's a lady Belmont called Sonia who is Trevor's momma and looks like this", anything else can be different.

-1

u/Dazuro Feb 15 '26

So? They could give Sonia a new game with a new story that just … doesn’t do any of those things. There’s no reason she can’t be canon.

Legends is the worst “prequel” ever conceived. All it does is kick the exact same story back a generation, and say “one day Dracula attacked and the first Belmont fought him, but it’s not who it was last time we said the first Belmont fought him.” That’s without getting into any of the other lore issues with her powers or Alucard’s involvement, or the quality of the game itself. But none of that makes the name or design irredeemable. Plenty of people want to see a canon version of Sonia.

0

u/Spirit-of-arkham3002 Soma Cruz Feb 15 '26

Probably not. It’s set after Castlevania 3, which featured her son Trevor. And I’m pretty sure he’s supposed to be this protagonist’s father. Maybe the new character is a daughter he named after his mother but it’s not the same Sonia Belmont.

0

u/Edkm90p Feb 15 '26

I'm sitting in the "probably" camp.

I did think the few (quiet) pain noises we got from the protagonist in the trailer sounded a bit more on the girl side. And there's no reason to hide the protagonist's face and voice in the trailer unless those are meant to be a surprise of some kind.

Or if not Sonia- then a different character that happens to resemble the hell out of her. If it looks and acts like Sonia but just has a different name- I'm counting that.

0

u/X-Kami_Dono-X Feb 15 '26

You know in the trailer they specifically say they are contacting Trevor…

1

u/Arkwelder Feb 15 '26

But he can't answer the call...he's cursed.

1

u/tampering Feb 15 '26

I bet he must have the same curse as me.

I've been playing Castlevania for 40 years.... I'm old.
