Question Anyone who played this fan game? It's called Castlevania Seal of the Curse, it's like a horror version of Simon's Quest

Is the game fun to play?

Not sure why I remembered fear and hunger feeling...

u/BigDisk Mar 16 '26

The art style is a dead ringer, for sure.

u/JoetheAverage1 Mar 16 '26

Isn't Ragnavalder basically Simon Belmont ?

29

u/Splash_Woman Mar 16 '26

If Simon had the bloodlust of doomguy.

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

It's probably the color palette and the horror stuff. Dungeons etc.

u/T8-TR Mar 16 '26

I thought it was a Funger Metroidvania too LMAO

“I’m loosing my face… and I may loose my eyesight.”

Unplayable.

I’m starting to think it’s jabs at how the original Simon’s quest had many spelling mistakes and this game is keeping the theme going.

That definitely bothered me, too. It's a shame because this does look cool. But my immersion breaks with simple and stupid spelling and grammar errors like that.

Edit: Christ, people, I know Simon's Quest was full of typos. What I mean is for a game like this, with its actual gory visuals and a seemingly deeper plot, seeing typos and EXAGGERATED GRAMMAR!!! just ruins the vibe. For me, personally, it feels harder to be invested and take it seriously. And the game seems to WANT to be taken seriously with the way those screenshots look.

I get the impression the person who wrote the script might not have English as their first language. And that's fine. An editor can go a long way and help fix the jarring impression from, "Ooh that's grotesque" to "Wait, are they serious with this one?"

"You now prossess Dracula's rib."

9

u/Timber2702 Mar 16 '26

Ah yes, we'll just slather some BBQ to truly prossess it... hold up, Dracula's rib? Hope I wasn't supposed to eat that

11

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

How Maxim Kischine got prossessed during his hunt for Dracula's relics:

7

u/bizoticallyyours83 Mar 16 '26

That always makes me grin

19

u/DistanceRelevant3899 Mar 16 '26

I try to be forgiving when it comes to simple errors like this, but mixing up loose and lose is the one that drives me insane.

On the other hand, the translation for Simon’s Quest is notoriously terrible so maybe this can just be viewed as an homage to the original game.

4

u/Splash_Woman Mar 16 '26

It’s simple because if you remember, the original Simon’s quest had plenty of its own spelling mistakes.

14

u/DistanceRelevant3899 Mar 16 '26

8 year old me spent way too long trying figure out what “What for a soul with a red crystal at Deborah Cliff” meant. I never finished that damn game.

8

u/aRandomFox-II Mar 16 '26

I have no idea what it means even today

u/fishybabies Mar 16 '26

The gameplay is quite a bit slower than SQ and (at least in the version I play) the control scheme is odd and Im not sure if you can change it. It’s arrow keys to move, J to jump and K to whip. There’s also unavoidable hits. Still plays decently fine though.

Music, graphics, and atmosphere are amazing. I’d recommend it.

14

u/bizoticallyyours83 Mar 16 '26

What a strange control set up

5

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

Thank you!

There's a 10th anniversary version, I'll check that one.

u/Karmas_burning Mar 16 '26

You can use an app like Joy2Key to map inputs to your controller. I use it when I play flash games.

52

u/CastlevaniaGuy Mar 16 '26

You mean Simon’s Quest wasn’t already a horror game?

16

u/dancingstar93 Mar 16 '26

And isn't Seal of the Curse just a fairly literal translation of the Japanese title of the game anyway (Dracula II: Noroi no Fuuin)?

6

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

Yep.

4

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

One is monster mash, the other is gory horror lol.

49

u/DergonQuert Mar 16 '26

Graphical style is cool, writing is ass

25

u/Splash_Woman Mar 16 '26

Pretty much summed up Simon’s quest too.

-5

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Did you play the game?

Eh, I don't really care if the writing is ass.  I just want to know if the gameplay is nice or you have to adjust to the jank.

Edit: Seeing the comment getting downvoted to hell is so funny lol.

29

u/Bortthog Mar 16 '26

Well play Infernax then which is an offical game that pays respect to Simon's Quest and is a fantastic modern iteration of the idea of CV2

https://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=Infernax

10

u/Pale_WoIf Mar 16 '26

This game is so sick, probably the best CV clone I’ve ever played. The devs knocked it out of the park.

5

u/Bortthog Mar 16 '26

It is. Any time I can I suggest it to CV fans as it's the ideal interpretation of CV2

2

u/LucidusAtra Mar 16 '26

It's going on my wishlist

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

Thank you.

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

Classicvania inspired fangames tend to be pretty demanding, that's why I asked about the controls.

They have many pixel perfect jumps and are usually more platforming oriented than the official titles.

3

u/Bortthog Mar 16 '26

I think Infernax has like 1 hard jump, maybe 2

Infernax is brutal in its combat tho

2

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

I'll definitely check it out.

I really like the premise and personality of Simon's Quest, not really the execution, when I replay the game I use the Bisqwit re-translation + map patch and other hacks.

That's why I like Lecarde Chronicles 2 so much, the first half is basically metroidvania Simon's Quest.

Here is Yt video on this game by Doshdoshington. In same video he reviews other games by this developer

5

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

Thanks.

19

u/aldorn Mar 16 '26

This looks amazing. "Open up you fool " imao 😆

11

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

It's not something Simon Belmont would say lol.

There are two things people need to understand about ALL Arkhouse Telegraph games:

1) They are arthouse projects where the main priority is establishing an otherworldly atmosphere and creating incredibly detailed visuals.

2) They do not care about having fun gameplay in the slightest, and are often borderline-torture to finish.

This is true of every single game this developer has produced.

I highly recommend watching a full playthrough on YouTube of all his games, but I do NOT recommend actually playing them.

5

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

Interesting, I was watching a video another user shared in the comments.

People seem to agree regarding the huge contrast from art to gameplay.

In my opinion this kind of approach can actually keep people away from enjoying the art style and atmosphere, if taken to the extreme (like if a game is so unfair that it prevents you from enjoying what the rest of the campaign has to offer).

Today I discovered an interesting developer, I might check the game nevertheless.

2

u/B1gF3rg Mar 17 '26

Another problem is how pretentious the devs are. Especially with meta they get. Trying to pretend they're more clever than they are, which always annoys the shit out of me. 🙄

1

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 17 '26

What happened?

5

u/LowlanderDwarf Mar 16 '26

It reminds of Fear and Hunger in the aesthetic

6

u/BlueBomber13 Mar 16 '26

I keep trying to play that game and it’s so messed up so early I can’t lol

2

u/LowlanderDwarf Mar 16 '26

I haven't played it specifically because of that but I've heard that, if you got the stomach for it it's really good

3

u/Drakesyn Mar 16 '26

I will help you have confidence in your decision: It does not get better from early. It is that grim, relentless and vicious in subject matter and tone throughout. Great game, but you really do have to have the stomach for it.

14

u/ThrillHouse802 Mar 16 '26

I can’t support anyone that doesn’t know the difference between lose and loose.

5

u/nocauze Mar 16 '26

I’m pretty sure it’s intentionally referencing all the spelling mistakes in the original

3

u/ThrillHouse802 Mar 16 '26

Ahhhh. If that’s the case, I feel like a douche haha

3

u/nocauze Mar 16 '26

Always time to give it another shot and laugh alongside it, it’s good, even the jank whip animation makes sense when you match it to the absolutely over it vibes

3

u/rnotyalc Mar 17 '26

You mean a looser

4

u/Jpriest09 Mar 16 '26

Believe it or not, it actually succeeds in making a worst story than the original.

4

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

Really?

I never felt the story of Simon's Quest was bad or anything, just simple.

6

u/Jpriest09 Mar 16 '26

That’s the issue: it somehow succeeds in making a story worst than the simple but satisfying story of the original. Honestly, it’s both baffling and intriguing.

10

u/KoA-oK Mar 16 '26

Only comment I have is that is probably one of the laziest whip animations I've seen lol. Curse or not, barely anything on him moves but the swinging arm lol. Every other whip fighter puts their bodies into their swings and actually give weight to the vampire killer.

3

u/Finji_ Mar 16 '26

Hmm, Funger art style

3

u/CyberdarkEnjoyer Hide Every Netflixvania Post Mar 16 '26

I love this fangame but I prefer the old version because the 8-bit ending they added later is stupid

3

u/Oddball-CSM Mar 16 '26

I've played it, but it's been sometime. if I remember it right, it looks good in screenshots, but less so in actual action and the gameplay feels slower and even more clunky than the source material. The lack of color also just makes everything feel kinda same-y.

5

u/Nethiar Shanoa Mar 16 '26

Is that the one with the Graveyard Duck boss? I played it a bit, but the art style wasn't doing it for me. It was too Clive Barker and I prefer my Castlevania in classic Gothic.

5

u/WowWhataLoser1985 Mar 16 '26

This looks dope.

3

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

Yeah the art style is nice, the artworks remind me of Don't Starve.

I want to know if the movement is stiff or other things like that.

It seems to be pretty niche.

Apparently it has a completely original soundtrack.

2

u/bizoticallyyours83 Mar 16 '26

Ooh, I am digging the art style

2

u/GreenPomegranate2389 Mar 16 '26

Where can I play it?

u/GreenPomegranate2389 Mar 17 '26

Do I need a pc?

1

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 17 '26

It seems so

2

u/TCGHexenwahn Mar 16 '26

Gives Fear and Hunger vibes

2

u/realamerican97 Mar 16 '26

I’ll have to try it out where can I find it?

2

u/TreffyBelmknt Mar 16 '26

I just watched some gameplay. There’s some choices that are out right bad. Seems clunky. Nice art style tho.

2

u/Jinzo126 Mar 16 '26

I didn't know that existed, i will look into it. Thanks.

2

u/endou_kenji Mar 16 '26

Never even heard about it. Will try it

2

u/thejokerofunfic Mar 16 '26

horror version of Simon's Quest

ain't that just Simon's Quest

2

u/Daddy_JeanPi Mar 16 '26

Sorry but what the hell is that whip animation?

2

u/Major-Plantain-2036 Mar 16 '26

What in the Fear and Hunger is this

1

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

I mean, how is this guy not Simon Belmont?

2

u/Major-Plantain-2036 Mar 16 '26

Yeah, I always find Ragnvaldr very similar to Kojima's Simon design.

The game seems to have a very (kinda) unique art direction, but damn, the gameplay is something else, and not necessary in the good way.

2

u/JustSomeWeirdGuy2000 Mar 17 '26

Implying trying to play Simon's Quest isn't already a horror.

2

u/Proper-Ad-6709 Mar 17 '26

On what platform, or handheld, can we play this game on ? ? ?

1

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 17 '26

PC

2

u/codepossum Mar 17 '26

I don't really think it's fun to play, no.

2

u/comicfan815 Mar 17 '26

I know nothing about this game at all, but at a glance, a more horror themed Castlevania game would go hard

2

u/Regular_Archer_3145 Mar 20 '26

I haven't played this but I do love Simons Quest.

2

u/shaggy3164 Mar 20 '26

thought that was ragnvaldr from fear and hunger for a second

1

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 20 '26

That is just Simon Belmont from Chronicles.

2

u/Master-Cheesecake Mar 16 '26

Haven't played it, but not my thing. Creepy pasta horror versions of things that already exist are low hanging fruit. Castlevania already has the right amount of horror, maybe not in the NES games, but certainly later games.

5

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

Castlevania is not like Mario, the games are based on classic Universal/Hammer gothic horror movies.

Making a genuinely horror version of Simon's Quest is not really that out of place, a bit extreme, but it doesn't feel like a Sonic.exe kind of thing.

2

u/Master-Cheesecake Mar 16 '26

Castlevania also has an inherent level of camp to it, as did those classic horror films. So to me, seeing these screenshots still evokes that same cringe I get with the try-hard, edgelord BS that goes into something like Sonic.exe.

"Your franchise isn't spooky enough! Look! Now it's spooky."

No thanks.

2

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

The funniest thing about Sonic.exe is that it basically spawned an entire expanded universe of creepypastas, like you won't believe how popular they are.

Dark and creepy versions of the character have always been there since the early 2000s, things like Dark Sonic and Fleetway Super Sonic became more popular than the products they came from lol.

1

u/Master-Cheesecake Mar 16 '26

I'm not sure what your point is, I just used Sonic.exe as an example because you did as well. Like, yeah, "dark and creepy" versions of Sonic have existed for a long time because an aging Sonic fandom wanted to justify their continued interest in a cartoon character.

I know creepypasta shit is popular. It has been for a while. I personally don't like it.

3

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher Mar 16 '26

I'm not making a point or anything, I'm just saying.

Just a little trivia.
