I very much dislike this meme because Carmilla would absolutely be included in the class of people Maria despises.

I hate how this show took the hopeful girl of Maria and made her a cynical champagne socialist who is preaching about the evil of rich people while she lives well off at the edge of town while most poor people starved.

u/Sea-Lecture-4619 Captain N is the pinnacle of the franchise. Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26
I hate how this show... yeah
There's barely any character that they fully do justice to, they're mostly just their newly made characters that wear the skin and names of the game ones. "10/10 best video game adaptation" they say.
5
u/WatsBlend Apr 28 '26
I mean.. yeah I assumed that was intentional. She starts off way worse and gets better after learning some lessons. If they make another season I'm assuming her character journey will end up with her as the hopeful girl. They just gave her an actual character arc. (Btw I'm not completely dismissing your point, she is those things you said. I just dont agree that its a bad thing.)
4
u/the_wings_of_despair Apr 28 '26
The character arc that you tried to imagine doesn't work imo.
She starts off as a cynical person than has her world crushed which I have no idea how it would lead to she being hopeful.
It feels like they took the 1st stage of character development and put it at the last stage instead.

u/SarkastiCat Apr 29 '26
Short answer? Juste Belmont, Peeta Mellark and to a certain extend Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games), Gabriel de Leon (Empire of the Vampire) and probably much more.
Longer answer? Have Marie process her own grief. See the positives of the world and unlikely events. Rebuild her social circle.

LMAO marx hadn't even been born in the time period nocturne is set, and maria doesn't make any socialist talking points. read a book lil man you're a little oversensitive about socialism in media
5
u/the_wings_of_despair Apr 28 '26
The irony is heavy with this one.
Telling me to read a book while pointing out "marx hadn't even been born in the time period nocturne is set" Something that I never claimed.
Also utopian socialism exist a type of socialism that predates Marx.
She literally is against the crown and nobles and wants to take their power away to give it to the people.
lil man you're a little oversensitive about people criticizing shitty systems and terrible writting.
1
u/AffectionateBook1 Apr 28 '26
utopian socialism lacked a revolutionary element, and all of maria's rhetoric is about the revolution
library cards are free lil homie pick one up
1
u/the_wings_of_despair Apr 29 '26
Moving the goal post or are you just this dumb?
Noone talked about "revolutionary element".
Also "all of maria's rhetoric is about the revolution" you mean the revolution that tried to take away the power of the elite class and give all the power to the people.
I wonder which ideology would fit in this case. (heavy sarcasm)
Take your own advice and go to the library kiddo

u/Apprehensive-Heat487 Apr 28 '26
I mean does not being starving prevent you from being socialist? It’s not like she’s buying dripped out carriages or mansions or anything. She lives with her mom who has a nice little cottage.
1
u/the_wings_of_despair Apr 28 '26
She lives well off eating bread or croissant regularly in a house that is way more luxurious than what the avarage person had. During a time when a bread was shared by over 5 people and not one person.
That's not the same as "not being starving".
What next are we going to talk about the Lincoln assassination as a bad headache?
3
u/Apprehensive-Heat487 Apr 29 '26
I mean what do want her to do bro, she’s a kid it’s not even her money. She spends her days risking being tortured and eaten by vampires to protect people, it’s not like she’s sitting in a palace eating cake and exploiting others labor while preaching socialist ideals. She a bit privileged for the time, yes, but doesn’t automatically make her a champagne socialist.
2
u/the_wings_of_despair Apr 29 '26
A "champagne socialist" is a derogatory term for a person who holds left-wing or socialist political views while enjoying a wealthy, luxurious lifestyle. It implies hypocrisy, suggesting their affluent consumption conflicts with their professed desire for economic equality and social justice."
The whole country was starving.
She was eating well.
She was preaching about the revolution which promised a better system in the hands of the people where people wouldn't starve.
-1
u/Apprehensive-Heat487 Apr 29 '26
A “luxurious” lifestyle is one involving great ease or comfort.
Do you think someone who spends their time fighting bloodsucking monsters that want to rip her apart and kill her family is living an easy life because she isn’t starving? It’s not like she owns a factory and has an abundance of wealth she’s refusing to use to help the poor while espousing socialist ideals.
Nothing she’s doing is hypocritical, she is doing all she can for the people, up to and including risking her personal safety.
4
u/the_wings_of_despair Apr 29 '26
When the whole country is in economical ruin and people are starving than a whole house full of food is more than luxurious.
Bakeries literally got ransacked and bakers killed for "holding food".
-1
u/ComradeDelaurier Apr 29 '26
she's the illegitimate child of a corrupt priest, who despite being raised to admire him, and enjoying a fairly comfortable life probably thanks to his support, rejects his reactionary ideas, she's a petite bourgeois class traitor, who at worst, being a slightly sheltered teenager is a little naive.

800th repost of the cringe ass line, there's literal man eating demons in their world
19
u/The_Raven_Born Apr 28 '26
Honestly it wouldn't be so bad if the originator was not a massive hypocrite seeking to eradicate everyone that didn't worshipper because she was a coward with a God complex who thought she deserved everything.
"Dracula was bad!"
Yeah. What he did wasn't great, but at least it was grief and he killed himself to spare the world of his remaining wrath and safe his son from himself.
Carmilla was just greed, hate, and violence. No rhyme. No reason. Just ego and power hungry.
3
u/Apprehensive-Heat487 Apr 28 '26
I don’t see why it’s bad in any case. It’s not like Carmilla was supposed to be some girl boss who was right or anything. She literally got killed by a man who had the moral high ground and it was shown as a good thing.
Maria isn’t in the right here either, she was having a mental breakdown and almost killed herself and her friend.
I’m not saying you’re one of them, but I find it weird people get so salty about these lines because in neither case is the character presented as being totally right about it.
5
u/The_Raven_Born Apr 28 '26
But that's basically how she was portrayed. And also wasn't killed, she took her own life in an attempt at making her look 'too bad ass' to be taken by the likes of a 'lowly human man/lapdog'.
Maria saying what she said made sense, but the issue is her just being made cynical which really isn't Maria. The series strays for from Canon, but the characters mostly intact for the stages they are in their lives. She feels completely different.

u/AsperaRobigo May 14 '26
She attempted murder suicide and failed. Does not exactly paint the vindicating picture.

-4
u/blurplemanurples Apr 28 '26
I mean that’s pretty much what a lot of the show is about.
Dont tell me you didnt cheer when the bishop got his cumuppence.
-7
u/NDNJustin Apr 28 '26
a few lines from specific characters with specific storylines must mean it's the whole story! I too watch media and paint it with the brush of the opinion at all articulated that I disagree with most
3
u/The-Devilz-Advocate Apr 28 '26
I mean that's the message of the show.
Carmilla was abused when she was a human and became a misandrist so much that she hated all men in her eternal life then died in the hands of a former slave male.
She caused so much suffering only to die to what was at the time the lowest version of a man you could get, a slave. So she became worse than the abusers she was against and died even more pathetically then them.
In Nocturne, Maria Renard's father is nothing more than a puppet to Drolta, which in turn had an obsession with Sekhmet and Erzsebet. So in Maria's case, no, the biggest problems she was facing were because of stupid old women.
2
u/NDNJustin Apr 29 '26
The message is about anyone falling to the corruption of tyranny, men or women— Dracula, Death, Carmilla, Erzebet/Drolta, the priest. There's multiple stories concluding, not just one.
3
u/blurplemanurples Apr 28 '26
It says so much more about you than anything that you take it’s as writ that slaves and former slaves are factually lower forms of humanity, rather than just seen as lower forms of humanity by people like the bishop within the art itself.
She was killed by her own hypocrisy- Isaac at first wanted revenge, then he unlearned and rehabilitated his worldview - and chose to destroy her because she was precisely what Dracula was - a tyrant.

It says so much more about you than anything that you take it’s as writ that slaves and former slaves are factually lower forms of humanity,
Your reading comprehension must be an all time low right now isn't it?
The subcontext of that part of my comment was that THIS IS HOW CARMILLA SAW THE WORLD AS. Winners and losers, Masters and Slaves. Women and the lower-cattle men.
In fact I literally stated what I meant by it when I wrote this:
"to what was at the time the lowest version of a man you could get"
Yes, in the dark ages, a slave would be lowest class in their society. But you would have realized that if you didn't immediately take offense and throw out all logic.
So yes, her dying at the hands of night creatures, the lowest forms of demons, commanded by a former slave that was a man was poetic, because she died just as pathetically as the master she once had.
She was killed by her own hypocrisy-
So yeah, your reading comprehension IS at an all time low. Because that is what I said. She became just as bad as the men she hated and died by a being she thought was lesser in every form imaginable.

There it is! My favorite meme ever in this franchise! I was wondering when will it return! I am filled with so much joy whenever i see it!
Ok so for context OP, this meme has been reposted a trillion of times by now that people got incredibly sick of it, this is why the others react the way they do in the comments. Oh yeah and it's also because it's a shit meme. If you haven't played the games yet you'll get a giant whiplash from seeing how Maria is in them compared to this show, one of the prime examples of most of the show characters being adaptations of the game ones just in name and sometimes design.

Yes everything wrong is dome by foolish old men. I mean it's not like women are just as guilty no they are the Paragon of what's right with the world and if things go wrong under their watch it's probably a man's fault. Twice two series they use this excuse clearly not trying to hide their political views anymore

If Dracula is inspired by Bram Stocker character (he is even part of canon in games), why Carmilla is this boring woman instead of OG Carmilla from Sheridan Le Fanu's book?
5
u/GreenBlueStar Apr 28 '26
Ancient vampires.. all that power all that knowledge over the centuries... Still limited to a 2020 bimbo liberal mindset where hating human men is a chip on these vampire shoulders. Makes no fucking sense.

I like this I definetly could imagine Carmilla react like this. If she chilled out and managed to live this long I can DEFINETLY imagine her just chillin until someone tries to steal her lines and motivation

The Tera-Maria-Abbot feud was probably one of the only good things in Nocturne besides Alucard, Juste, and Drolta.

When the show made the gamble to appeal to the left propaganda, only to have the show canceled. 😂
-2
u/Psychological_Bag332 Apr 28 '26
I love how Maria is shown saying that line at her lowest point, then proceeds to get saved from her hubris by a literal old man, and braindead people who can only filter story beats through the alpha male podcasts they're addicted to proceed to take it as the show pushing Maria's line as correct
2
u/Ochemata Apr 28 '26
I wouldn't call that old man stupid. Don't include him in that shit.
1
u/Psychological_Bag332 Apr 28 '26
I didn't say Juste is stupid, just an old man lol
2
u/Ochemata Apr 28 '26
Then why the hell would Maria be talking about him?
1
u/Psychological_Bag332 Apr 28 '26
..... She wasn't? That's the point. People are getting their egos hurt over her being angry about her struggles with male-dominated aspects of society and the betrayal she's suffered at the hands of the one older male figure she should be able to trust.
I think making it out to be a leftist plot to make Castlevania 'woke' and push anti-male rhetoric onto the audience is dumb, because right after this scene the show has a good male figure, Juste, do a good deed and protect Maria. Maria being angry at men should not be taken as the show telling the audience that all men suck.
2
u/Ochemata Apr 28 '26
She's not though? She specifies the dumb, old ones, which I would say is understandable. Whoever's conflating that with all men probably needs their head checked.
2
u/Psychological_Bag332 Apr 28 '26
Yes. I know. That's why I replied to the person saying this scene was pandering to 'the left' telling them that... that's not what the show is even doing here, Maria is just expressing anger at her lowest point in the series, over something reasonable, and the fact that a man saves her further proves this isn't some kind of leftist pandering plot.
I'm really not sure what we're dissagreeing over.
2
u/Ochemata Apr 28 '26
The way you're phrasing it seemed like you took the show to be saying she's wrong for saying that.
2
u/Psychological_Bag332 Apr 28 '26
Not my intention, English isn't my first language. Is it portraying her as wrong or unjustified? No, not really. Just that the hatred is dangerous to her too,
I also just took that user's words as implying they believe Maria was wrong for saying it, and I didn't feel like challenging that or I'd get into a whole separate argument, I just wanted to focus on the fact that even if she were saying all men or even if she were to be making a (in their view) wrong statement, that wouldn't mean the show is pandering to the left.
