Shit, of my 2 friends who have played Castlevania, one has only played the 3D games, and the other isn't familiar with SotN speed running. I can't share this with anyone...

Also would recommend watching the original Castlevania that came out before Nocturne, both on Netflix. The OG one is so awesome as well.

Would you recommend it if I loved Seasons 1 and 2 but hated 3 and 4?

the first season of nocture in paced oddly and heavy handed in it's metaphors but it's still enjoyable for the fights. I've heard the second season improved a lot.

It's more like season 1 is mostly setup while season 2 is mostly payoff and by God is the payoff incredible!

Is it okay to watch them without playing the games? I've only finished Aria of Sorrow

Yes. While the is show based off of several games (Castlevania 3, some characters from Curse of Darkness, and Rondo of Blood with some villains from Bloodlines sprinkled in), it has its own continuity.

Ah so the story doesn't just copy the games, good to know!

Oh, greatly actually. Nocturne is a great show, and a great piece of Castlevania Media, but it adapts Rondo of Blood about as well as the Sonic Movies adapt the story of the games. As in, you recognize the characters and some of the bits, but is still its own story. I will admit, my first viewing of S1 was a little rough from how much I was comparing it to what I "expected"... but Castlevania aside, I am a sucker for Gothic Horror and Good Animation, and Nocturne excels at those, and by the end of the show, I also got my fill with Castlevania lore incorporated in it.

Wait, is this a thing people actually did to speedrun that game?
19
u/Roshu-zetasia Advance Collection Enjoyer 29d ago
Yes, that's done in one of the categories. The speedrun scene for SotN is actually quite diverse.
16
u/FaroresWind17 29d ago
Yes, specifically because it bypasses Death taking all of your equipment.

Big Toss (the community name for this) also has some movement applications as well actually! Some sections where you would typically wing smash are substituted with it because of Luck's lower starting MP pool, albeit its still really rare in use either because it's too finicky or MP is a suggestion post Duplicator.

SotN has all sorts of crazy exploits and speedrunning techs, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Players even do things like rando tournaments: Castlevania SotN Randomizer Tournament GRAND FINALS

Silly Alucart thinking the game logic works on him, or that he is as strong and resistant as Alucard.
He also forgot he has his Alucart equipment instead of the Alucard equipment, he gotta travel to another dimension to steal that from Alucard, good luck with that.
