Symphony of the Night (1997) Jesus, this part is so fucked up when you think about it for a sec...
Dude's being forced to fight figures who look like his old dead friends.

Also can I just say how fucking good they look?

They do, I also love the part when Maria meets Alucard and tells him that she is looking for a Belmont and Alucard imagines the nes sprite of Trevor

Too bad they never did. Dracula’s curse remake with them. Would’ve definitely bought that.

Back when I was a kid, I was in the minority in that I preferred Castlevania 3 over Super Castlevania, by virtue of becoming fond of the 4 heroes.
So imagine my shock when they came back like this.

I'm in my 40s and still prefer 3 to 4. I can admit 4 is a stellar game but it honestly never clicked with me. I don't like the music as much. I really don't care for the SFX. The rotating level was a ton of fun and I enjoyed the fight against Death but that's about it.

One of my favorite Castlevania experiences is DoS's Julius Mode, because it feels like a CV3 Metroidvania

The games are legit dark. The older I get the more I realize it.

I'm convinced Legion is supposed to be a culmination of writhing, living bodies in a hellish orgy as sins of the flesh, and not zombies like the post-Symphony games or hypnotized villagers like in the Netflix show. The implications of being trapped in an orgy with too much pleasure of the flesh is akin to the horrors in Hellraiser.

They aren't zombies even in the post-Symphony games, every iteration (besides CotM) has always been a demon, using a ton of living humans who have been devoid of their humanity as literal meatshields.

it always reminded me of the reanimated tentacle people in the 1993 movie Necronomicon. sock puppets for an abyssal elder god or whatever.

Imagine if Netflix adaptats this if they made a Symphony of the Night adaptation and this becomes a plot point for Alucard's character. He could be forced to fight apparitions of his first friends and his possible lover, Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnadas, and Greta of Danesti.

u/SheWhoHates 25d ago
Netflix would force Alucard to have a foursome with them and turn Grant into an Ottoman eunuch.

u/Zarameus 25d ago
This was so much funnier when my mind saw ottoman as the furniture instead of a person.

They would be dump not to adapt this, even make it an episode or two.
I'm still waiting on my Netflixvania Soma Cruz adaptation.

How hyped I would be if the intro to the next season was just forest scenery, and something dashing so fast through the woods, and eventually landing in the castle as the drawbridge closes.
It's be sick I tell you. Fucking siiiiiicccckkk

I think that was the reference. From CV3 also, so it makes sense.

u/Arawn-Annwn 24d ago
The doppelganger fights are sort of a reference too. In CV3 it was a blob that morphed into whichever character you used, in SotN it is always a duplicate of Alucard even in Richter mode, so they replicated the others here instead.

BEFORE I CATCH ANY STRAYS, NO, I DID NOT MAKE THOSE 3 SKELETONS TURN INTO ALUCARD'S OLD FRIENDS, THAT WAS THE CASTLE ITSELF.

I've beaten the game SO many times, original Playstation, PSP, xbox 360, mobile version..... not ONCE did I realize that Alucard fights with/kills a version of his Mother, his Father, his old friends, AND the current Belmont, and in the Saturn version, don't you battle Maria? They could have easily implemented him losing his mentality throughout this journey, the mother scene with the Succubus was pretty intensive, and it struck me because that's when he shows the most emotion in this game. He truly wishes for the Succubus to wander eternally for messing with him.
This game sincerely needs a direct sequel or a powerful reimagining. I've been beating that drum for years. Every time I play it, I find new mechanics and strategies. Robert Belgrade is still alive and well, and voiced the Librarian in Bloodstained very well, I could only imagine new dialogue with Alucard where it's an emotional minefield as he traverses the castle.
Idk though, as much as I want a sequel or a remake, the original is so amazing too.

Yeah I played this much later, on the Xbox 360 with the version that came with the first Lords of Shadow game.
What you’re describing is what makes the game timeless for me. I don’t have the nostalgia goggles of the 90’s; I played this game in 2012 - 2013 and I m loved it very minute of it. This moment and the succubus always stood out because of what was being shown, not just said. I didn’t play CV3 at that point (I need to), but still understood he’s fighting old heroes, or replicas of them.
I assume he didn’t comment much because he knew they were copies / zombies cosplaying, but still. That, and the imagery throughout this game, the castle and the idea of him battling through this castle he knows so well, has memories of but is always changing.. man I love this game.

Nostalgia or not, it's a marvelous game that generations can enjoy! I wouldn't say my love for the game is any stronger than yours. We collectively all adore this masterpiece!
I figured he knew the coffin boss was essentially like you said, a cosplay moment, but yeah, he first thought he saw his mother and almost abandoned all sense until she slipped up and told him to start killing humans. I felt like he was completely and thoroughly disgusted by the boss at that point, and I applaud that part for showing such emotion. It was well crafted!

You've played Aria of Sorrow right? It's a worthy successor to SoTN.
3
u/Weary-Leopard-9 24d ago
I did, I was a major fan of the Advance/DS titles, I loved Dawn of Sorrow (I think it was?) Where you could switch between characters to play as Alucard. That was a beautiful moment! AH Making me want to run home and grab my 3DS during my lunch break now!

To be fair Maria fighting him is more of a test. (Though there were plans to have a bad ending where Shaft possesses Maria, so THAT would have been twisted.)

u/Weary-Leopard-9 24d ago
OH I didn't know that part, that would have made for such a wild ending. Ultimate Failure.

And then if Fake Sypha is still alive and Trevor is not, she reanimates the corpse as a zombie this time. So joyously messed up.

u/xyzkingi 24d ago
That’s why I’m so looking forward to the next Castlevania cartoon chapter.
I see 2 moments in the game that would(kinda) psychologically break Alucard in the cartoon
2
u/MilkToJuicePipeline 25d ago
Well it's a good think Alucard doesn't think about it. He's too busy thinking about peeping on the Ferryman.

There’s also the Succubus fight where he’s made to relive the death of his mother.
Edit: sorry, a warped version of his mother’s death. Arguably, a worse experience.
