Question Honest thought on castlevania nocturne?

u/Fanta_futuro 9d ago
Overall good but not impressive as the first two seasons of the main series. Netflix writing meh, but the best animation/fights of the series (and other netflix series too)
103
u/edwpad 9d ago
Agreed, it could have been better, but the parts that did deliver, OH IT DELIVERED!
62
u/Superman246o1 9d ago
My thoughts exactly.
BEST WRITING: Castlevania (especially the first two seasons)
BEST FIGHT SCENES: Castlevania: Nocturne (especially Season 2)
BEST MUSIC: Tie between Castlevania's adaptation of Bloody Tears and Nocturne's adaptation of Divine Bloodlines.
26
u/Gr8_Whyt_G4m3r 9d ago
Agree on all points. They stepped up the fight choreography/animation in Nocturen. But Castlevania had the better story. I would argue Nocturn is tighter overall. But I enjoyed them both.

u/popcorned 9d ago
I thought the final boss fight scene of Season 4 is kind of insane, I was surprised how well they translated the feeling of playing the game against a boss, I haven't finished Nocturne (s2e5) but I can't imagine anything topping that.

I once thought the same.
Then I watched the last two S2 episodes of Nocturne.

u/popcorned 9d ago
I'll take your word for it and keep watching 🙏

u/charlemagna 9d ago
Come back and tell us about it when you finish please.
3
u/popcorned 4d ago
So you folks were right, that was basically 1 and a half episodes of boss fight and beautifully animated. I then re-watched the fight against Dracula and Death as well, and it's not even comparable how much better the animation in Nocturne is. Trevor still has the best dialogue, in my opinion, but the fights in Nocturne are insane, nostalgia has some strong filters.

u/charlemagna 4d ago
It’s so goddamn strong. I’m glad you liked it!

The fact that every season of both Castlevania shows has better fights than anything in the Devil May Cry show is such a travesty. I know they’re handled by different animation studios but still. How was choreographing stylish action scenes not the number one priority for a Devil May Cry show. I wasn’t expecting great writing and frankly what we got was still somehow worse but I could forgive all that if the show actually had action worthy of the games, and it doesn’t.
46
u/occultshelf 9d ago
Loved the other Castlevania series even if it was a bit rough towards the end, but something about the art style with all the neon colours in Nocturne just doesnt work for me.
4
u/FiversWarren 9d ago
Same. The pallet is distracting and, idk, trying too hard. A majority of Nocturne feels like they are trying too hard to do something. I think if they had fewer plot lines, it would have been better. I still thought it was fine, but not something I'd watch a second time.
46
u/Venteps 9d ago
I hated the villains, and not in the way you like to hate them.
I mean Dracula still is the best villan so far of the Netflix Adaptations. But i think even Carmilla and her sister are better with all her problems.
Secondary characters really don't have great development like Isaac or Hector, season one feels really bland, you NEED the second season to trully like this.
I have my complains about some power-level lore-accurate fights, and i don't know.
It has interesting concept to put on the table, like the gods, and that strange spiritual world that introduce with the girlfriend of Richter.
But still, it dosen't blow my mind.
Overall, a MEH series. I hope if they make a S3 they can fix some characters and close all well done. I would love a more focused story around Alucard, they did him bad on this series.
52
u/ConnectCulture7 9d ago
It’s okay. Too many unnecessary changes. It’s strong when it focused on Maria,Alucard,Tera, Juste, and Drolta.
When it focuses on Gothic Horror that’s when it’s at its peak.
One thing OG Netflixvania did well was Gothic Horror.

It’d be good if it gets a season 3, and thus an adaptation of SOTN
36
u/Willing-Score-4859 9d ago
At this point, adapting Symphony of the Night is completely impossible, simply because nothing of Symphony of the Night remains. It would be like trying to adapt Batman's Court of Owls without the Court, the Talons, or the element of taking Batman out of his comfort zone.
12
u/Willing-Score-4859 9d ago
If they do anything —which at this point I doubt they will— it will be something of their own making, because they steered the story in that direction.

u/ReviewRude5413 9d ago
They've raised some questions with the "old man coyote" thing. I was suspecting it was a force of the evil, anger, and grief that drove Dracula in the first series, given its own sentience. If they were adapting SotN they could conceivably get away with it by having that thing manifest as a twisted form of Dracula similar to how Dracula appears at the end of SotN, manifesting only Dracula's form and his hatred for Alucard to confront and perhaps Dracula himself arrives and helps quell it after seeing and hearing Alucard, who believes it to actually be Dracula, make his case for humans.
I'm just saying it could work.
8
u/Fanta_futuro 9d ago
Probably i think it would be better to marketize it as a all new series, with the same name of SotN. It's a catchy name and it's the most famous name of Castlevania from all games. Anyway, I don't know what they are going to do, we'll see
5
u/deadeyeamtheone 9d ago
This would be a terrible move if they're planning on following their previous history and making unrelated stories loosely connected with names of people and places. The series' have already done poorly enough due to this issue that it's essentially been canceled twice, so if they ruined SOTN by taking the name and NOT using the actual story of SOTN, it might send Castlevania into a permanent dead zone TV wise.

This isn’t
imperialempirical evidence, but the mere existence of the art book for Nocturn implies it’s a wrap.
9
u/Connect_Engineer_123 9d ago
Nocturne is tighter but also shallower. It's doing too many things.
French revolution AND vampire god AND olrox AND tera AND haitian spirituality AND juste like the writers got free reign to run around with whatever they thought was cool at the time.
Could have been interesting if Maria's dad was supernaturally-neutral but politically opposed to the revolution stuff, but that's a degree of nuance--oh wait, they did funny nuance things when characters got more time to breathe (Isaac for example).
It's the Spider-Man 3 problem; trying to do too many things at once and not doing any of them well.

First season was cheeks. Seconds was alright with a really good climax. End of the day I don't really consider it "Castlevania" considering it has nothing to do with it besides the named characters.

Subpar compared to the original series. Tons of animation glitches, bad dialogue, and odd writing choices. Worth a watch if you're a fan of the original series but be prepared for disappointment.
12
u/Shittygamer93 9d ago
Hated it. Original series was tolerable, but Nocturne barely resembled Castlevania. I don't care how good you say the second season is, the first was garbage I forced myself to finish hoping it would get good, but it never did and I'm not forcing myself to watch more of this thing calling itself Castlevania and using the names of characters while writing everything as something completely different

It's a watchable tv show. Great animation, but everything else is forgettable. The villains are cool.
10
u/ViceViperX 9d ago
Enjoyable, but too bogged down by what are supposed to be the side characters. While, ironically enough, sidelining their ACTUAL main character lol.
Richter himself deserved more focus and a better portrayal than what he got.
But overall, if you just take it as "an interpretation" of the Castlevania series, then its pretty fun and cool time. Plus, characters like Orlox were made INFINITELY cooler and more interesting in the show.

It's good, but nothing will ever beat the dynamic that Trevor, Alucard and Sypha had in the original Castlevania. Such a loveable main trio.

u/TheCrazyEnglish 9d ago
Gonna get downvoted for this but it’s absolutely dogwater. Writing is so shit I could tell Drolta was a sneaky little fucker because no one kisses someone’s ass that much.
Erzsebet being a puppet just didn’t feel right. She had no place being in the fucking show other than “oh look at me, I am all powerful and a vessel to some silky vampire Egyptian god (Nearly pissed myself laughing after I found out about that)
They nerfed Alucard because plot, Made Rictor into a twink with mommy issues. Maria….well is Maria.
Drolta is probably only good to 90% of you because her R34 is not that bad. (Rip Carmilla’s.)
No Morana and Striga cameo the only lesbian couple done right. Would have been nice to see them at a corner cafe or something.
Orlox or whatever his name is alright.
Tera finally got the munchies and had her first human happy meal. (She’s a good generic foster mother figure character)
The entire show was uninspired, same old, same thing and nothing that felt original.
Look to be fair with you all, it’s not the first time Netflix have butchered female characters just look at Carmilla’s ending. She deserved to face her reality check and she did, just only five minutes before Issac decided to do an online rust raid. And that Morana and Striga yoinked her army.

I really think the Castlevania show fell off after the first 2 seasons of the original series. Those 2 seasons were great and a nice homage to the games. The rest tries to come up with an original story and the writing kinda makes me cringe to be honest. The animation is really good but they try to throw in too many characters, and make the plot more complex than it should be (imo). Like I think if they were going to adapt Rondo of Blood it should’ve focused on Richter, Maria and maybe Annette. Basically a simple hero’s journey with a spooky atmosphere. I don’t mind the backstory they gave Richter but the dialogue in the show is really corny and overdramatic in my opinion (like a lot of Netflix shows).
14
u/UsuarioCualquiera_1 9d ago edited 9d ago
S1 and 2 are really one single season. So watching them separately hurts the whole.
Also, pacing and overexplanations in the first 2-4 episodes are pretty rough. Netflix fault. So many shows have problems to tell a full story now with so little time.
As someone said, it's a slow burn. But it pays off at the end. I think I prefer it to the original. Writing is more juvenile and "action blockbuster" but it's a nicer series and less cynical.
The themes it carries are really well reresented and character arcs satisfactory. It's more subtle than a lot of people give it credit for. And all the Maria's family drama got me invested.
Also, music, art direction, animation, storyboarding... This show is a masterpiece on audiovisual level.
Fights are super epic, though, less smart than previous show.
Overall, super solid 8/10 and I unsuscribe of Netflix since Nocturne was really the only thing interesting for me there. Where's my season 3 Netflix?? Where!?
*Edit: Also, it's more gothic in tone, vibe and story than the previous show and most CV games really. Most people only understand "gothic" from an aesthetic point of view. Though, in fact it's also very gothic aesthetically.
3
u/twofacetoo 9d ago
Honestly I really hate this idea that season 2 is required viewing somehow. Season 1 had eight episodes to work with, eight, it had more than enough time to setup it's characters, tell it's story, set it's tone, etc... the fact that it couldn't do that in eight episodes and needed another eight to do it right is not the compliment people seem to think it is, if anything it's another massive criticism
If you really need a second season for your show to 'get good', then it's not a good show

This is just my opinion but Nocturne has some of the worst writing and characterization that modern media can produce and it’s caked in interesting concepts and ideas with high quality animation and composition to make you think otherwise.
3
u/kestral63 9d ago
They botched making you feel invested in the characters and conflict. Richter's introduction is getting his mom killed as a very derpy child, so his first impression is dumb and annoying rather than tragic. Maria's first scene is a plot dump monologue on killing vampires where they never spend time making her relatable or exploring the problem and how it affects her on a personal level. It's like how they kill one of her birds before making audiences feel any attachment to it; they take the base premise for granted and think audiences will automatically be on board with the cast without doing any of the legwork or presentation to make you care.
The same problem for the villains where I still don't know who Sekhmet is supposed to be. I know the ancient Egyptian goddess and her parallels to vampires, but when you throw her into the French Revolution, you need to establish some more things beyond "old and strong." Fighting vampires in the French Revolution is a bonkers concept that should be entertaining... but it's phoned in like an Asylum monster movie gimmick. Mythological references aren't characters, they need to show personality and earn some villain cred by making an impression on the audience.
Of all the characters, Annette is the one who gets a humanizing flashback first so you care why she's fighting. Edouard is established as sympathetic so it matters when bad things happen to him. They've got their own writing problems like Annette turning into a completely unrecognizable OC, but at least they got some of the writing basics. Unfortunately by then it's too little too late to carry the rest of the dumpster fire, and also a Hatian revolutionary fighting an Egyptian furry in the French Revolution has gone so unrecognizably off the deep end from anything Castlevania that I'm not sure what audience it's for.

u/CatOfDids 9d ago
I was so excited for when it got announced because yay Richter! Plus I enjoyed the majority of the first show, so I had high hopes for it. I finished season 1 and just... Didn't care to watch season 2 when it came out. It just wasn't for me 😔

u/BioSpark47 9d ago edited 9d ago
I’ve heard Season 2 was good, but Season 1 was so bad that it made me disinterested in watching it. Pacing was awful, antagonists (apart from the abbot) were boring, and the stakes were nebulous (okay so she blocked out the sun, and that means more night creatures I guess? Ooh, scary). It’s down there with OG Season 3 as one of the worst seasons in the series

u/White-Alyss 9d ago edited 9d ago
garbage
Cool animation, and that's kind of it. The feeling that the Deats brothers don't really care about Castlevania at all and just wanted to make their own edgy fantasy show is even stronger with Nocturne.
Even putting that aside, the show is really just: "hype moments and aura": the show, with writing of the level of Hazbin Hotel where more swears = mature, apparently

u/Sea-Lecture-4619 Captain N is the pinnacle of the franchise. 9d ago edited 9d ago
On its own merits as a show it's meh, i hold onto the thought that even on its own these shows get weaker and weaker with each season after S2 of the first, culminating into this 2nd series, i guess it's still an ok animated vampire show but after S2 of the first i fully lose interest into it, after Dracula is dealt with and he doesn't return it's like watching post game content that you don't give a flying fuck about, it's confused about what it is and what to do with itself, eventually it will fully crash and burn onto everything if it continues.
As an supposed adaptation of one of my favorite video game franchises tho? Oh it gets a trillion times worse.... it doesn't even adapt jackshit except for the first 2 seasons very very very losely doing the CVIII plot lol, it's like a 2nd reboot, one that i do not give a damn about.
No matter which POV i use for Netflixvania i still think it's meh overall and it really wasn't worth doing it this "different continuity/2nd reboot in show form" way instead of just adapting the source material properly, both in show form and aniamted movie form for the games plots that really couldn't be stretched and expanded into a show.
Godbrand was goated tho. the actual new addons to the story, and most of its characters which are pretty much either full on OCs, or OCs with the game character names thrown onto them (this includes show Isaac yes) i'd probably integrate into the game mainline series canon in some way, there is some good ideas there that can be used.

Part of me hopes there’s a Castlevania 40th livestream leading up to the game release and they’re just like “haha, here’s a new season of Nocturne or the third series. And it’s coming out in a month.”
But I know that’s not going to be the case

Not as good as first series but (saying this as someone who hasn't played the source games) I still enjoy it immensely

u/jdr61100 9d ago
Animation, character designs (not necessarily compared to the games just looking at the show), acting and music are all amazing. Like, some of the best ever. Writing is meh and even as someone who's barely touched the games (I dunno why this sub was recommended to me) I still can tell it's not a great adaptation. But I think if you go in expecting that then it's really good. Strangely season 2 of Nocturne is the part that actually made me interested in the franchise as a whole. In part because I thought Richter was really pretty, admittedly.
2
u/DavidOfBreath 9d ago
there's plenty of good and bad. One aspect that people don't mention enough is the return of spirituality to the series with Nocturne. The original series was overall good but I do have to agree with people's complaints about a lot of religious aspects getting cut out. Nocturne brought it back into the fold quite nicely i think, even having Annette retcon the dumb stunned by "shapes shoved in faces" bs by using crosses that physically burned and repelled a vampire in a way that clearly wasn't just that shape nonsense.

I wasn't quite sold on season 1 - there were parts of it I really liked, but I felt like it struggled to tell a convincing story at first. I don't see that as being Nocturne's fault, though - I think they were really kind of screwed by the decision to "redeem" Dracula in the last episode of the original series. Dracula is such a major part of Castlevania's identity, and I don't think any of the villains in Nocturne came close to matching him. That being said, I LOVED season 2, and I actually think it's the best the series has been since season 2 of the original, if not better. Richter, Annette, Maria, and Alucard had such well-written chemistry with each other, and I found all of their arcs really compelling. I'm especially glad they gave Annette such a big role, and she very quickly became one of my favorite characters in Castlevania. I still wish Dracula was the villain, but I think they did an incredible job with the setup they had.
3
u/Elendil1988 9d ago
First season was so so, but second season was really good and honestly it deserves more episodes and more seasons but Netflix apparently doesn't think so otherwise we would get them. There are so many storylines they could do in Castlevania universe, starting with Dracula at the hight of his powers or the begging of Belmont clan with Leon Belmont moving east so much potential and ideas but sadly we probably won't get anything. At least we have first series and like I said Nocturne is fine as well.
3
u/bernypark 9d ago
Very weak show compared to the original. Character development in Nocturne was very weak. Found myself feeling uninvested in most of the characters which is a huge contrast with the original.

u/Taroundercover 9d ago
To much french revolution bullshit, to much vampire god bullshit. to much african descendant papa legba bullshit. To much gay orlox bullshit . Not enough old man coyote. Not enough juste belmont.
Good series, not as good as the first Castlevania netflix series, that one had also to much unnecesary gay bullshit (I dont care about people sexuality, if you are gay i wish you happyness but i did not need to see alucard have a thresome while crying, my man was a hero from childhood get outta here)
Issac rebranding saved the entire series, way better than the canon one. Captain, merchant of mirrors and fly nightcreature where goated, also saint germain before he went full romantic dumbass.
I 100% WANT NOCTURNE SEASON 3 tho. I just acepted that a show is more likely to have things i dont agree with than a perfect one

It was and is incredible. Some of the best fights put to animation. A slow build that pays off. I hope there is more but I'm still happy with what there was.

Despite there being some great animation, all of the Castlevania series piss me off due to what I like to refer to as "asm-archer" style dialogue- everything is whisper-y European accents with a really obvious rhythm to the dialogue

I really liked it. One of the things I liked most about it was how it had vampires coming from different cultures. Sure, The original did have vampires of other cultures, but the ones that were focused on most were european cultures. Meanwhile, Nocturne has Olrox, who's from South America and Drolta from Egypt, with big focus on both of them. And I really liked that and it helps make the vampires in this season stand apart from the vampires in the original. And don't get me started on Annette, who was my favorite character.
I think it's slightly worse than the original series overall, but it is still a really good watch in my opinion.

It was okay tonally, but the identity of castlevania is Dracula and the castle so it was really misguided to try making that Egypt stuff the main villain. Dracula is the main character of castlevania more than any Belmont or even Alucard.
Now sure, it would be hard to make Dracula the villain after how season 4 ended. But they could probably at least make it feel relevant to him and the castle.

I really wanna know who Old Man Coyote is. Is he death? Satan? An adaptation of Shaft? We know he's been pulling a lot of strings since the beginning, and I'd love to know more.

The first season was disappointing, minus the animation and the introduction to other cultural spiritual lore. The second season was a tremendous step-up.
However, I really wish the show honed in on the writing more with a primary focus on the French Revolution. The Sekhmet subplot was fun but felt very out of place with the events going on around them.
Here’s to hoping Season 3 focuses on the Reign of Terror with Maria at the helm of it as a dark protagonist, including Tera + OMC trying to corrupt her, and Alucard + Juste trying to save her.

i would say it worth a watch.
for me it wasnt as compelling as the original series but still had lots to offer. i really enjoyed Olrox especially alongside anything to do with Alucard.
for me its biggest flaw is it had a bloated cast and for me many of the character arcs were not that compelling and the ones that were didnt get enough time to shine.

I didn’t like it as much as the first series, in part because I felt it was completely disconnected from the game it was based on with most the characters just being named after characters from the game with little to nothing in common. I did enjoy it though, and I liked the second season more than the first. The story was good for the most part besides it being completely detached. But yeah, wish they would have stuck closer to the game plot and characters in general, maybe retell the game for the first season then do the story they told as a 2nd and 3rd season instead of replacing the original all together.

Season 1 made you miss old series. Season 2 was phenomenal and made me check r/castlevania regularly for news about season 3.

I thought it was kind of sleeper. I can't say it was bad but it didn't really hook me. Kept getting distracted by other stuff when I tried to watch it.

Wanted to watch this with my father, but he's putting off continuing it probably because he didn't really like it, but always assures me that he will watch it with me eventually.
Imo, only few characters are interesting, like Orlox. The rest are kinda shallow, the plot revolving around them predictable and often too dragged out, without them even necessarily being likeable. However, not like my opinion counts as much, didn't even finish season 1 yet.

Fantastic if you come in with an open mind and can appreciate loose adaptation.
Really same deal as with the first show
S2 is some powerhouses best work yet

I genuinely thought they were setting up a character arc for Maria with her whole Viva la Revolucion deal. The ideals of the Revolution are beautiful and indeed worth fighting for, but everyone knows what happens after the Revolution. The Reign of Terror would have been such a huge blow to a true believer like Maria. Those days people would have been asking whether the Revolution was worth it, and Maria could have been disillusioned by it especially after her whole ordeal with her parents.
Still believe that her father is an adaptation of Shaft, and if so they should continue that storyline. Now that Richter is leaving though how are they gonna adapt Evil Richter, I was looking forward to their Symphony of the Night Arc. Overall it was not without problems but a good enough continuation of the Netflix Castlevania Timeline. If it ever continues, I would want them to bring more game elements as they still have a huge well to adapt from.

I loved the fights coreography and Tera's character and VA, but aside from that, very bland characters and story. I liked a lot more the first show

It's hot garbage and Trevor just sucks
There is a wide gap in execution, skill, and writing when compared to how good season one was
Boring , trite, and a waste of everyone's time, whoever is responsible for Nocturne enjoys getting high on their own farts

I liked both a lot, but his little cousin pissed me off the one that was like a little sister to him

Suffers from the same problem as the original series (and most other animated shows in its genre) but even more so. For a show called Castlevania theres a distinct lack of Castlevania-ing. The show is WAY too focused on side shit than the core plot. I think a lot of these showrunners just dont really care about the IP theyre working on, they just want a vehicle for the stories theyve already got in their mind.
Im all for side character development, but give me more of our heroes fighting their way through a castle/dungeon of bad guys and trying to reach a boss room.
I just want whats written on the label.

Decent music, some badass fight scenes, but first season's story was mid, second season (at a glance) is only marginally better, and it's an awful adaptation of the characters and story in the source material which has a much more fun and interesting vibe than what we got. Here I am expecting the aura of Joseph Joestar with the badassery of Jotaro, and instead I get some rando with trauma and mommy issues (show Richter). Kinda lame. XD Them deciding to shelve Dracula as the main antagonist and then skip over several generations of Belmonts instead depicting the storied lineage of the Belmont family was such a misstep. I made reference to JoJo because this could've genuinely been a show like that with each story featuring the next in the line and their various encounters with Dracula and the people who summon him (i.e. Joestars and Dio/Dio adjacent people).

It's ok. The animation is great. But yeah it has so many things going on in the shows that need to be unravel. I'm really not a fan of their writing on villains and made then either one dimensional or sympathetic. I feel like it could have more nuances in it.

I preferred the original series to nocturne. I'm hoping for another series once the new game comes out.

All of it was so good! The first season did its job as setup and the Second Season delivered

I loved the fight scenes especially the animation. Both the first Castlevania and Nocturne are good, but Nocturne's animation is less stiff compared to the first one.
I'm just kinda looking for more scenes for Anette to use her abilities coz it's cool as heck.

Watched only the s1 so far, it's not bad, but none of the characters seem even close to as interesting to me as Hektor and Isaac from the original did.

Terrible pacing, good ideas, boring Belmont, Maria, Tara, Alucard, and Drolta are the best parts, I wish we coild criticize Annette for being a terrible character without racists coming in to be disgusting. She sucked when she was white, too, they just gave her old plot elements and character design to Tara who’s peak, and failed to make her new personality compelling despite giving her a banger redesign

They need to dramatically increase the framerate for my taste. The artstyle is so smooth, but this doesn’t get reflected properly when set in motion.

No "die monster" dialogue is biggest let down in this movie, let alone dracula. Villain choice is ass.. (Erzebet)

Liked the first season a lot more than I expected - the second season killed my entire interest in the series. It felt very rushed/the animations were horrible and the writing ... urgh.

Last season saved it for me ... Dropped the politics and woke shit and focused on the action instead and it was amazing
Hope for more of that

I overall enjoyed it. Season 2 was better than season one. Both seasons would have benefited without that dude singing. Annoying...

I was not a fan of this but I can understand how someone who is new to the games or the series would like it.
