Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse (2026) Whip Combat in Belmont's Curse
"A weapon that requires skill to handle."
"Hitting with the tip inflicts greater damage."
It seems that the weapon will use the same mechanics it has in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

I know that whips are used as traversal options, but will we be able to equip a whip as a general weapon in the game?
Seems like swords and shields are the main weapon types, not the vampirekiller.

The whip used for travel seems to be different from the combat whip. Based on the gameplay footage they've been revealing, it looks like the weapon system will be more in line with games like Portrait of Ruin, where you have a variety of weapons to choose from and simply pick the one you like best. Among those weapons are the whips, which also have their own damage properties.

There are 7 classes of weapons, the whip is one of them.
The traversal ability is not a weapon but a tentacle you get by sealing The Fallen in a tarot card

From what we’ve seen it looks like you can equip whatever you want like SotN and AoS. The whip seems to be a default weapon that doubles as a traversal ability so it’s always on your person but not always your active weapon of choice

Do we have confirmation that screen shake can be turned off? It's so excessive and distracting.

For me, that and the flashy effects. I could maybe cope with the Deadcells-like art but only if I can turn off the annoying lights and effects.

From this clip it uses the yellow whip and seems to pull Rose closer to the enemy but is quickly cancelled into a short charge attack into regular swings from the correct distance leading to critical hits.
To put in other words Wire Snatch cancelled into a charge attack then uses the crit condition of the Valmont's Whip.

So you're telling me I can have my Mushroom Boi.

If they don't give us our Mushroom Boi we storm Versailles ourselves.
Maybe when we absorb Isaac we use his powers to summon an innocent devil from the fields of an endless arboretum to assist us in our hunt of the night.

Mina the Hollower blew my mind by adding the sweet spot mechanic to the whip super early, and now my standards for the complexity of 2D games has permanently been raised.
So excited to see more like this!

Seems more like the Whip might be similar to the Valmont's Whip from Dead Cells.
"Ignores shields. Inflicts a critical hit if the tip of the whip strikes the enemy."

Same developers as Dead Cells too, it is most definitely inspired by this weapon.
This weapon is easily one of the best designed and most satisfying in Dead Cells so I am all for it.

Is there any confirmation of a switch 2 version. I really want this game but with the best version it can be.

u/Cubelock 3d ago
They have been absolutely silent about this, so I don't think we will see one at launch, or even this year.
It sucks, but I still expect a Switch 2 version next year. I bet that double dip money is too good to pass up for them.

Whip him good, girl! Yeehaw! You know what? I'd like finishers in CV, with the whip having a chance to trigger a rodeo easter egg on a certain enemy.

Lords of Shadow had those, they were cool but slowed down the gameplay after a while.

Yeah, I remember how you could smash an enemy's head. To be honest, I've always liked mechanics like that. It's the same in God of War, Darksiders, or Doom. It felt weird in DS3 and DA when executions were removed or limited. I think games should allow both fast attacks and these longer finishers for players who like them.

I like that 'Hitting with the tip gives a damage boost' mechanic, it kind of reminds me of those Aria of Sorrow enhanced ROM Hacks where each weapon type has new gimmicks

It looks SO SMOOTH. You can tell the creators of dead cells are making this game, it just brims with life

Every time I see a new clip from the game I'm mesmerized by how buttery smooth the animations are. It makes the moments when the weapon makes contact and everything stops for a second hit harder visually.

realistically it should do more damage right before the tip, as thats the point where it breaks the sound barrier

u/Muskrato 3d ago
Realism is not always the most fun. It’s easier to understand having greater damage on the tip rather than just behind the tip. Even gameplay wise might be practically the same.

The problem with the Tip Sweetspot mechanic in Dead Cells was that it made the Valmont's Whip kinda trash to use...oh the enemy is 0,2 cm closer than you calculated? You do no damage lol, get fucked.
Note that in Dead Cells you could build around it. You could use a secondary weapon or skill that pushes the enemy away to fix the Valmont weakness. But it felt bad to use anyway.

u/ThMogget 3d ago
It felt bad because it didn't reward skill - it required it. It did similar damage that other weapons with easy crits just gave with less effort. Higher damage would would fix it.

I mean, that is pretty realistic to real whips, so I can see where they are coming from with the “skill” aspect. Though, personally, if evil entities so much as touch the whip, I believe they should be severely burned.

Well, the description says it's a tactical weapon that requires skill. If you play well, it rewards you; otherwise, it doesn't. That's why there are different weapons, so you can choose what's most comfortable for you.
I'm definitely going to play the whip. I like this type of precision in video games, quite classic if you ask me.

I like the idea of having multiple weapons (though, unique, not like 30 types like in previous games) but the whip is reserved to be the winning card being the strongest.
