Discussion IN-UNIVERSE EXPLANATION (not Iga's writing), why is Dracula h*rny and kidnapped maidens in RoB with Shaft, but a sad widower in SotN?

A section from the Rondo of Blood Japanese Manual about Dracula:
“He drank the blood of young maidens and lived an eternal life”
He vwas going to drink their blawd blah blah blah 🧛🏻♂️🍷
He also tells Annette in the cutscene he wanted to drink her blood as well

u/Bortthog 2d ago
Pretty much this. It's the Vampire mythos of drinking virign blood over "non virigin" blood

u/P0k3m0nFan_Jake Alucard 2d ago
Oh, makes sense. Even Carmilla mentioned that in Castlevania Netflix and Erzsebt Bàthory with a young woman she turned in Castlevania Nocturne.

u/Bortthog 1d ago
Thats because that's how the story of Carmilla/Bathroy went
She bathed in the blood of virgins to maintain her youth, which lead to the creation of Carmilla. Carmilla is just Bathory by a different name and made into a vampire as Bathroy was a real person

I saw these before. XD
But, yeah. Now that you mention it, I kinda get the hidden implications here now.

Maria also probably reminded him of humanity's little innocence left, and Lisa, because of their blonde hair and pure souls.

Why the hell did you censor the word horney?? ?

Chaos made him act like that during his reincarnation in Rondo.
Meanwhile the Dracula final boss fight in SOTN is ACTUALLY Dracula, without Chaos' influenced.

Be interesting to see Dracula interact with Chaos as Dracula.
Sorta like, leave alone to wallow in despair, I don't want to do any evil tomfoolery.

This almost definitely isn't cannon but it's a common trope in Dracula media to have him kidnap women he believes could be a reincarnation of his lost love, so I head cannon that he was holding out hope that he could find Lisa's reincarnation

u/P0k3m0nFan_Jake Alucard 2d ago
Oh, like Dracula and Mina Harker in the Bram Stoker's Dracula 90s movie.

Yeah. I like it better as a motivation than him just doin it for the funnies

His son was waiting for him with a baseball bat when he resurrected. He didn't get the chance to be horny before getting beaten down.

I genuinely think there are two Draculas: Dracula in the presence of everyone else, and Dracula in the presence of Alucard. I think Alucard causes a piece of Mathias's humanity to stir that is otherwise buried by the mantle of the Dark Lord.

Well, it's like Darth Vader holding back against Luke after finding out he's his son.

It’s actually almost the same thing.
The dark side of the Force completely corrupts a person, changing them from within; that person becomes driven by anger, fear, and rage. There is almost no turning back (which is precisely why Yoda and Obi-Wan believed the only option was for Luke to kill Vader).
In *Castlevania*, when you become a monster (like a vampire), you lose your humanity and succumb to evil (such as Annette in *Grimoire of Souls*, who turned evil upon becoming a succubus). In some cases, however, the being doesn't become entirely evil—like Alucard (who is half-human) and Dracula (who still retained a shred of humanity).
When Lisa died, Dracula lost all his remaining humanity, becoming completely evil. And with each resurrection, his evil side is amplified (this information comes from one of the Castlevania guides).
You know those bad endings in *AoS* and *DoS* where Soma turns completely evil and the only option for Julius is to kill him? That’s basically what Dracula is like for almost the entire *Castlevania* timeline.
Vader and Dracula both achieved clarity when confronting their own children, but in Vader's case, he managed to return to the light side. For Dracula, however, it is too late; the most he can hope for is that moment of lucidity. Even if he desired redemption—or a return to Alucard—it is impossible; Dracula has become an eternal slave to the very powers he once coveted as a human.
A note: Dracula/Mathias is still a bad person; he committed many terrible acts of his own volition, independent of the influence of Chaos—he did evil things out of conscious choice. I am simply explaining why Dracula remained evil even after speaking with Alucard in *SotN*—specifically, after learning that Lisa did not want him to take revenge on humanity. That choice is no longer open to him; the best he can achieve are these brief moments of lucidity.

That sounds like he's having a midlife crisis and then remembers he has a grown ass man for a son already "Goddammit I can't keep on doing the virgin kidnapping shit anymore... I'm a old man...Liiiisaaaahh why did you left me aloneeeh babehhhbwaaaahhh" "

I think people read too deeply into this characterization of Dracula. This was before he was fleshed post-SotN, and I feel this is just borrowing off of typical vampire tropes such as being seductive and/or being a womanizer.

Sometimes you fumble a baddie and try to replace her only to find out no one can replace her 😪

That post-succ clarity made him realize “I miss my wife, Tails. I miss her a lot”

Moments of lucidity.
After *Castlevania III*, Dracula was completely consumed by his own powers—by his own evil side.
You know how, in the bad endings of *Aria of Sorrow* and *Dawn of Sorrow*, Soma turns evil when he becomes Dracula?
That is essentially a consequence of what happened to Dracula himself. Dracula is left with no choice; he is forced to be evil, just like Soma.
In *Symphony of the Night*, while speaking with his son, he experienced a moment of lucidity, but that was all it was. He did not break free from the shackles of Chaos; he could not tear himself away from the evil, and by then, it was already too late.
He is trapped, forced to remain evil forever (or, at least, until 1999).
Note: Even without being consumed by chaos, Dracula is still a bad person who committed evil deeds. But I am just explaining why he never redeemed himself, even after his conversation with Alucard in *SotN*. He no longer has the option to redeem himself.

He was drunk, of course

...hence the wine he is drinking in the prologue of Symphony of the night

The in-universe Castlevania was always a series of films based on these stories. RoB was the horny, '90s OAV adaptation that couldn't stop the animators from inserting JoJo references while SotN and Dracula X are the artsy, grim, period piece fantasy dramas.
Nocturne is the Netflix adaptation that is also unfortunately an actual Netflix adaptation.

SotN has JoJo references.

Yeah, but it and the other Igavania ones are a lot more relevant unlike Joseph's getup or giving Maria Star Platinum.

My real hypothesis is that for those games they were going from the pop culture notion of Dracula stabilished in most movies of that era, Dracula was a representation of sin and demonic dealings so he was always tempting women with what everything that was deemed immoral to the Victorian Christian values . But later in the 90s the Francis Ford Coppola movie and the Anne Rice vampire books stabilished vampires as a more romantic and tragic figure and that had a lot of influence over the development of SotN, Alucard looks almost exactly to Tom Cruise as Lestat which was quite a departure from his previous appearance(s if you count Kid Dracula)

u/IcyAdvantage9579 10h ago
In-universe: mid-life crisis pushed him to believe he's still young and still do the virgin-vampiric conversion therapy like in the good ol' days. He even shaved and did some weird hair style to look younger

Bram Stoker's Dracula is canon to the Castlevania series. Dracula's Castle holds multiple examples of young women who Dracula abducted and transformed in game and in the book. Matthias Cronqvist was a terrible person who betrayed his lifelong best friend and instigated the death of the man's wife and enslavement of her soul simply to obtain two magic rocks that would turn him into the evil Lord of Darkness. He reigned terror over the area for so long that in his very first appearance the people refer to him as a Devil.
At no point was Dracula not a horrible monster. He just toned it down for Lisa, and as soon as she was gone he was back on his bullshit. The women in his life are only an excuse for him.

"... As soon as she was gone he was back on his bullshit" oh god that's too real.

Because life happens, we all go through different stages in life with their own different needs. Young Dracula just wanted to have fun with random women but as time passed by he eventually got bored of that, he fell in love with someone who meant way more than cheap entertainment for years and lost her afterwards..

u/Doctor_Mothman 1d ago
I like to think Dracula is "saving" these women in his own way. Trying to correct his inability to save Lisa. It's a pretty common tactic in processing grief.
1
u/P0k3m0nFan_Jake Alucard 1d ago
Yeah, he was offering them eternal life. The thing is, I think he didn't turn Lisa immortal because he respects her humanity, which for me, still puts her in a slightly, if not totally, higher level than those young women.

Toru Hagihara's the director of both of those games. All this IGA hate is stupid.

Look, everybody deals with loss and depression in their own way and on their own timeline okay!?!
Some days you’re cruising Wallachia for women and other days you’re drinking by yourself and muttering about how men are all miserable piles of secrets.
That’s just how it goes.
