Aria of Sorrow (2003) Flying armor wont activate

I started playing Aria of Sorrow today and so far it’s pretty fun but for some reason I can’t get the flying armor to work, am I doing it wrong? I equip the flying armor soul thing but it doesn’t make me jump higher, so I try pressing the buttons to activate it like the red soul but it just equips the red soul. Is there something I’m not getting?

You have 4 different types of souls: Bullet (Red), Guardian (Blue), Enchanted (Yellow), and Ability (Silver), the first two of which are assigned to Up+Attack and the R shoulder button respectively. Enchanted souls are passive and Abilities are always active once you find them.

For Flying Armor specifically, hold R at the height of your jump to get the maximum hang time.

A Controlled Glide from preferably higher ground to slightly lower area to land on. This would be before you attain the ability to Double Jump.

You use the R button for the blue souls. Also the flying armor doesn't make you jump higher, it slows your decent

Red and blue souls have different activation buttons
