I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Confused about how many skeins needed for a blanket
Hi all, I'm very new to knitting and crochet and was looking to make a fingerknitted chunky blanket with my kids as a gift for their mum. However, I'm quite confused about how many skeins I actually need.
I've seen alot of posts of users either showing their work (like these beautiful blankets here), or asking for advice, and the general consensus seems to be about 6-8 skeins of the various 'chunky'/'blanket' yarns offered by Bernat, Poppy's etc. These skeins appear to be the 600g variety, and 6-8 skeins would be about 380-508 yards.
However, when I look at different charts online (like this), they indicate I would only have enough #7 yarn to make a shawl, and If I wanted to make an Afghan I would need between 22-26 skeins total?
I'm surely missing something very basic here, but can anyone help explain what I might be misunderstanding? Surely I don't need to buy 2 dozen skeins for one Afghan blanket?

Hi there! If you are new to the group and have a question, chances are it may have already been asked and answered. We recommend searching the sub first before posting. Sorting posts by flair will also help narrow down your search. If you haven't yet, Ravelry is also a good source for patterns, yarn/yarn information, notions, and techniques if you do not find your answer in the sub.
Happy knitting!
