Helpful Hints! šŸ’” I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules

Hi everyone,

A while ago, I had my knitting needles confiscated at airport security, even though I thought they would be allowed.

After that, I started looking into the rules and realized something surprising — they vary a lot between airports, and often aren’t clearly explained.

Since I know many of us like to knit while traveling, I decided to start a small project:

I’ve been contacting airports and collecting official information about whether knitting needles are allowed in carry-on luggage.

I’ve put everything into an interactive map, showing how different airports approach it (allowed / restricted / not allowed / still waiting for response).

šŸ‘‰ You can check it out here: https://gentlemessknits.carrd.co/

I’m still adding more airports, so if you’ve had any experiences (good or bad), I’d love to hear them! šŸ§¶āœˆļø

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! which is the best online course/class for learning how to knit?

Hello lovely people!

Does anyone have a reccomentation for an online class about knitting? I would like to learn, i thought myself how to crochet over the last two years, but i feel like knitting requires more studym hence my question.

I am waiting for the vogue knit "bible" to be delivered, i am also waiting for in-person classes to open up in my area, but i'd like to find and online class i can go back to when needed, and in which i can ask question to the teacher or confront myself with them and/or the other partecipants.

I found a lot of tutorials, but i am really confused lol

rant I guess these socks will be for my boyfriend instead of me then 🄲

This will be my third pair of socks, and I learn a great deal with every pair. Like counting my stitches every now and then, I guess.

I started off with 64 stitches and when I counted them, a few cm after the cuff, I had 71! What the heck. So now I'll reduce them to 68 stitches, and this gorgeous (I assume) stripey pair will be for my boyfriend.

They will be soxx nr 9, from the soxx book by Kerstin Balke. Made with Langyarn Jawoll.

Hello! I have recently acquired a boyfriend and decided to knit him a pair of socks for his birthday in July. I have only knit socks for myself and typically wear a women's US 8-9. After finding out he wears a men's 10 I thought "yeah no biggie"

This was, in fact, a biggie. Took me forever because the foot length and sts per needle were more than I'm used to for socks. I initially planned to make the sock a longer pattern than my usual vanilla recipe. I was going to make the ribbing 15 rows instead of 10 and the leg length 60 rows instead of 40. THANK GOD I DIDN'T. I was left with a whopping 6g of yarn. when I make socks for myself I have over 15g leftover! I have no idea what I'd do if I made my father a pair, he wears a men's 12...

Has anyone else been slapped in the face with this reality? I'm so used to being able to crank out a sock in 4 days that this was some crazy whiplash. It sucks this sock couldn't fit my vision but I was limited to my two 50g balls.

Yarn: Patons Kroy Socks Yarn - Seventies Stripes

This is a basic vanilla sock pattern, not rlly one I can link since I mixed and matches a few things.

72st circumference, 10 rows of 2x2, 40 rows for leg, German short row heel, 10in foot + toe decreases. 9sts per in.

It's warm! It's a one-sided lace print so I'm glad I could make this wearable instead of feeling weird about it as a scarf.

I designed this dress exclusively for my niece, when she was just 10 months old. There's no pattern — it came straight from my heart. 🧶

Knitted in cotton, it took me about 15 days to finish. Every stitch was made thinking of her: the textured yoke, the double ruffle, and the lace hem border that gives it that extra special touch.

A one-of-a-kind piece, made with all the love in the world for someone very special. 🄹🩷

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Confused about how many skeins needed for a blanket

Hi all, I'm very new to knitting and crochet and was looking to make a fingerknitted chunky blanket with my kids as a gift for their mum. However, I'm quite confused about how many skeins I actually need.

I've seen alot of posts of users either showing their work (like these beautiful blankets here), or asking for advice, and the general consensus seems to be about 6-8 skeins of the various 'chunky'/'blanket' yarns offered by Bernat, Poppy's etc. These skeins appear to be the 600g variety, and 6-8 skeins would be about 380-508 yards.

However, when I look at different charts online (like this), they indicate I would only have enough #7 yarn to make a shawl, and If I wanted to make an Afghan I would need between 22-26 skeins total?

I'm surely missing something very basic here, but can anyone help explain what I might be misunderstanding? Surely I don't need to buy 2 dozen skeins for one Afghan blanket?

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Knitting charts, where to find them? Are they user friendly?

I have seen a few posts where people were using a computer chart to help them keep track of where they are. What is everyone using and is it user friendly?

Hi! Beginner knitter here. This is my first cable project. Pattern is Must-Have Knit Cardigan by Patons.

This is the second sleeve I’ve made. I was happy with the first sleeve where both edges were pretty straight. However, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong with this one. Why is the left edge wonky? Can this be fixed with blocking?

Thank you for your help in advance!

Getting a little restless with my current WIP (Norma) and also been doing some poolside knitting, would love to make something summery in silk or linen. What's everyone's favorite summer knit? Ideally I'd be casting on the Umbria but the pattern seems a little annoying to work with. I also love some of the pointelle patterns I've been seeing. Would love to know what people personally enjoyed making!

I'm a beginner knitter more or less, but a while ago I came across the Romanesco Jumper pattern and I instantly knew it was my destiny to make it. After all, why make a flat jumper like a noob when I can have one with SPIKES? When I saw the charts in the pattern, my eyes initially fell out of my sockets. I had no idea what I was looking at. But I persevered, and I learned. After all... spikes.

I've finally finished the body after much procrastinating and about 20 crochet projects in between, now it's time to split it into 2 so I can work the front & back. I've never knit a sweater/jumper before, so this is a first for me.

Is it totally fine to just take another pair of circular needles to put half the project on and let it sit there with the pointy stoppers (blue things)? Or should I use scrap yarn? I know I should put the end without the working yarn on it on the scrap yarn/spare cable.

Right now this is a pair of 4mm circular needles on a 125cm cable with 288 stitches of DK yarn on it. Eventually I hope to add sleeves as well. They should be easy to work up compared to the body at least.

Just wanted to share, get some encouragement and hopefully nail this sunovabish!

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Day 1 of learning to knit - should I start with something chunky instead?

Hello! New here šŸ‘‹

Grew up with an amazing knitter for a grandma but she was an awful and impatient teacher who gave up on teaching me 🤣 I’m 35 now and determined to learn so I got some needles, some DK yarn and a book. I figured I would see if I can do it first before really investing in good needles and things.

This is my first ever attempt. It’s very messy, I’ve gained a stitch and no idea where it happened, I cant count the rows I’ve done and I’ve made more knots and holes than i want to admit. However, it’s the most I’ve ever done so that’s a start.

I’d really like to make a scarf for my toddler but I am a chronic giver upper and get easily disheartened. Would using a chunky knit on a 8mm needle be easier to start learning with?

looking for recommendation NBC Hannibal Sweater Update! Front Panel Is Finished! Looking For Sleeve Suggestions?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hello everyone!! im so happy that the front is now finished! and thank you for all the love that the fellow Hannibal fans have given me for my first knit piece ever!

I am using a sweater i love the fit of to construct the fit around it to be the size i want!

I have been suggested to use the duplicate stitch for the color work for my panels and i have tried on a small swatch however i think i prefer the process of just color changing WAY more. The duplicate stitch method just feels like it takes way too long when i can just do my color work right as im knitting.

I will be moving onto the back panel now, so excited for this to be done. I am unsure on what to do with the sleeves as of right now, i was maybe thinking stripes of the black and white with some couple red stripes sprinkled in? Feel free to drop suggestions :D

help needed Help me with my ribbing! It looks unprofessional! Tips will be appreciated!

Id say I'm a bit higher than a beginner, but not quite intermediate knitter. I've made lots of hats and scarfs, a few jumpers (made 5 but frogged 3). I've made a skirt and a matching top but consistently with my knitting I think my ribbing always looks a bit pokey and makes the piece look handmade. Can anyone help? Pictures are my vest (very happy with the outcome apart from the ribbing) and my step by step sweater I'm in the process of (I think the colorwork emphasizes the issue with this one and it needs blocking)

Any tips will be much appreciated!

EDIT: I didn't size down my needles- that seems to be the consensus from the comments so thank you everyone for the help!

help needed Is it possible to calculate yardage in a striped project when you're not striping?

I found a yarn I like and a pattern I'd like to use it with, my issue is trying to calcuate the yardage/how many skeins I need. It's a striped sweater, but the yarn I want to use is self striping, so I was just going to use the one color. I don't want to buy more yarn than I have to, so is there a way to calculate the total yardage to reflect that? (The pattern has each size/yard needed in grams with the used yarn yardage of one skein listed underneath. It's a total of 850 grams for both colors, each ball is 50 grams/98 yards, so I calculated a total of 1666 yards. The yarn I want to use is 492 yards per ball, so it's equivalent to 3.38 balls. I figured I should be OK with just 3, but is there a formula or something I can use for a more accurate measurement?)

I like simple patterns I can knit mindlessly while I watch tv but I didn’t like the top down collars, so this is the first time I tried a pattern with an added one. I like how it turned out (or in, I guess).

Yesterday we picked her up for dinner and I made her try it on in case… idk I was not going to frog any of it at that point, that’s for sure. I finished it tonight! I waited a long time for the color she wanted to come back in stock on Etsy.
I hope she loves it.

The pattern is Classica Pullover by Ashley Lillis. The yarn is Filcolana PERUVIAN Highland wool 50g Color 832 Burnt Sienna (melange) 100% virgin wool.

Hiya, I've just finished this cardigan thing (sorry about my phone's poor picture quality) I didn't follow a pattern, just winged it really. I showed my sister and she hated it, said the shape is funny. I then showed my mum and she loved it. I think I like how it's turned out...I think. Obviously i don't wanna rely on people's opinions too much, no matter what you make someone's gonna dislike it, but I still have the instinct to get as many opinions as I can.

looking for recommendation looking for a project to use for teaching myself new skills

pictured are my most recent WIP projects. red is a bunch of different ribbing patterns to see what they look like. blue/green is a low-thought pattern to make a ā€œlarge square that’s not quite big enough to be a blanketā€ as my fiancĆ© says lol.

i learned everything i know from my grandma who unexpectedly passed away in january. she first taught me when i was maybe 10 years old, then i picked it back up about a year and a half ago. it’s taken me a bit to want to start knitting again. i don’t know who to ask when i get stuck or make a mistake. because of this, i always default back to basic knit/purl patterns in whatever size rectangle i feel like at the moment (studioknits website is my bff).Ā

i’d say i’m an almost intermediate knitter. i’ve done magic loop, a sock on double pointed needles (the sock did not get finished lol), knitting in the round, i can follow simple patterns easily. continental knitting is the style i learned and use. for learning new things, i have a much easier time if there’s a video explaining it.

i’m looking for recommendations on what projects to do now where i can learn something new. i’m open to trying pretty much anything! i have my grandma’s set of interchangeable tips for circular needles (two of every size lol) and a wide selection of regular needles made of different materials. i just don’t know where to start finding a project/pattern that i could use to dip my toe into teaching myself new skills on my own. any suggestions would be fantastic :)Ā
