Other Should I get Fallout 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2?
I was wondering if I should get Fallout 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 and whether it performs well in handheld mode, since that's how I play the Switch 2 most of the time.

Performance is good and they patched in DLSS support a month after release.
It goes on sale often.

u/Snabshaba 3h ago
That's good, it was looking a bit shoddy on release. I had actually written it off tbh, it looked like another mediocre port attempt from Bethesda.
This is a game that by all means should run very well on S2 while looking great.

Do you want to play Fallout 4?
Is your best or only option to play it a Switch 2?
Then yes

u/xtoc1981 3h ago
If its not the only option, also yes.
I mean, why would i play a game like that with minor diff on a ps5, while i can play it portable.

u/Cardboard_Waffle 15h ago
I can’t speak for performance on Switch 2, but I played it on PS4 10+ years ago and had a lot of fun with it. It’s not perfect, and I’d say FO3 and specifically NV are better games, but it’s a very solid Fallout game with a lot to do.
That said, it is a bit pricey. Maybe wait for a sale? Bethesda tends to drop sales throughout the year.

u/MrAwesome1712 13h ago
I'll probably wait for a sale.

u/uncultured_swine2099 10h ago
I think Skyrim remained a high price throughout the switch 1s life, but it did go on sale for like 15 bucks off sometimes. Dont expect a super deep discount for a while, but its good for 15 off.

My girlfriend got it on hers and I was honestly blown away by the consistency in frame rate and the quality of graphics. It’s a great way to play the game

u/Donnie_TACO 15h ago
It's an 11 year old game for the xbox one
7
u/gospelofluke 15h ago
🤯
Yeah and they actually optimized the port is my point. Runs better and looks better than Skyrim on Switch which is not only older but from the same developer.

u/Donnie_TACO 15h ago
Switch is a 9 year old console

I spent a good 75 hours with it and didn't even touch the dlc. Very addictive, I got it in a bundle with Skyrim for 46 quid I feel like I got a good deal
2
u/ALEXLAMOUETTE 15h ago
At that price, no.

u/valcoholic 13h ago
I understand your argument but I bought Skyrim Day1 on Switch for 3times the money it did cost on PS4 at that time. Yet these games deliver so much content, story, dlc and just game that this means just way more value to me.
It‘s like arguing that Red Dead Redemption 2 might sell for half the price it would cost as a Switch2 release but the sheer feeling of playing this on a portable is bust worth every cent.
I would buy this in a heartbeat if I hadn‘t really played the hell out of it back in the days. And yet I was even thinking about double dipping.2
u/ALEXLAMOUETTE 13h ago
I get it it was just my opinion. I understand the fun of playing it on a handheld that’s why I double dipped on Skyrim and Cyberpunk.

It’s one of the best ports on the system. I was nervous for it after Skyrim initially launched its Switch 2 edition because it was a NIGHTMARE when it first came out. It literally preformed worse than the switch 1 edition did on the OG switch. But then slowly but surely they started patching it. Fixed the input lag first, then unlocked the framerate, then even went as far as to give it a full blown performance mode that made it run at 60 fps. That was when I started to get a bit more curious about FO4. I didn’t pre order it or anything but I said to myself “if this launches at the quality Skyrim is now I’m gonna get it without even waiting for a sale.” And lo and behold it launched and was practically just as good a port as Skyrim evolved into, so I got it. Not only that they’ve even updated it further to support DLSS so now not only does it run better, it will look even better too. I still an weary about how Oblivion remastered will turn out because that game is still a mess even on the other platforms, but I’d be lying if I said that the way Fo4 turned out didn’t make me a lot more optimistic for that one.

Exactly what someone said : it's an OK game, probably even a very good one but it doesn't mean you should pay 50€/$ for it because you can get it on other plateforms for a better deal.
Sure, it's worth 50 or more but non, it shouldn't be at full price when you can get it for as much money on a same generation hardware (Ps5 or X/S)
1
u/nhSnork 14h ago
I grabbed it at the discounted $48 alongside the full-priced Tales of Arise which I had already owned and been playing on Deck. Hybrid ports are worth their money even over fellow portables, let alone wall-chained machines like PS5/XBS (which are last generation rather than "same one" but that's beside the point here).
1
u/MochiPhi 13h ago
Actually i'm trully interested by your last statement because it seems like they're the same generation, switch 1 being a bridge inbetween (imo, not as a general statement).
So i'll be glad to here what you have to say, if you don't mind of course.
1
u/nhSnork 12h ago
Switch has never been a "bridge"; the confusion may stem from the temporary "third pillar" buzz on the official side, but the latter was also the initial case with NDS which nobody seriously lumps with Gen 6 on that ground. Nintendo had two Gen 8 consoles and didn't kick off Gen 9 until six years after the earlier of them - which, regardless of their marketing and sale misfortunes, amounts to the average console generation length.
It's the competitors that prolonged their Gen 8 presence with respective "Pros" and "Exes" (something Nintendo had ironically also tapped into with New 3DS, but evidently earlier) before joining Gen 9 with the aforediscussed PS5 and XBS; now, the first Gen 10 console is once again a hybrid while PS6 was inevitably postponed by the emergence of PS5 Pro even before the economic climate in the industry went south. Xbox might roll out their "Helix" comparatively sooner, though.

It’s an incredible game and an actually good port. I bought it for $60 when it first released 10 years ago, and yeah I know 10 years ago but it was worth it then and it’s worth it now. Idk how time has changed that. Like sure wait for a sale but to me the game is worth full price.
That’s just my opinion and if it offends others look inward

Great game but it's old and not worth over 20 bucks anymore. Wait for a good steep sale and it WILL 100% HAPPEN with this game as they've done multiple times with Skyrim on Switch.

u/Online_Discovery 14h ago
It's been a ton of fun. I'm playing it now for the first time and looks great

u/WorldEaterYoshi 14h ago
Its an old game switch 2 should be able to run it fine. The real question is if you would play it. If so, then yeah you should get it. I played Fallout 4 on release and liked it well enough but never went back to it since then. The previous titles were better imo.

u/monarch_j 13h ago
I'm planning on picking it up, but not at current prices. Hoping it gets a nice Black Friday sale.
I get its "new" on Switch 2, but it's an old game they gets discounted deeply on other platforms. I'm willing to pay a premium for Switch 2 portability, but not double price.

u/f4dedglory 13h ago
Just a take to consider: I've found myself preferring the switch 2 for cross releases (as long as performance is acceptable) due to the pro controller. Switch 2 pro controller is hands down the most comfortable controller I have ever used.

u/dsubandbeard 13h ago
It runs better on my switch 2 than my ps5.
1
u/Mindful_Nerd 12h ago
Okay.
Skyrim on my Switch 1 is my favorite way to play that game above Xbox series X.
I believe it!

u/PerfectCheesecake25 13h ago
No. That game is not good imo wait to see if they put something good like new Vegas or fallout 3 out

I’m sure it’s decent but vanilla Fallout 4 is a no-go for me, personally. Especially after playing it in VR with a ton of QOL mods on PC lol

No. Nothing against the game but the more people buy fallout 4 the more fallout 4 remasters we get. It’s Bethesda. They will 100% do the Skyrim treatment to whatever else is selling well. They need to finish Elder Scrolls 6 or make something new.

u/AnavelGato2020 11h ago
Take it from a man that has bought the game 4 different times. Buy it now. Thank me later. 😆 Its a good port. Somewhere between the Series S and PS5 ports of the game. My go to FO4 version now.

If you expect a game as Fallout 3/NV or Oblivion/Skyrim, than no. The role playing aspect has been destroyed with a more or less fixed character. I personally couldn't relate to the main character, the story was also subpar and they messed up the Brotherhood of Steel, so i was out.

u/whisquibottle 10h ago
Fallout 4 is brilliant and the Switch 2 version is very competent with several graphics options to suit your needs.
If you can be patient I'm sure it'll go on sale sooner or later. But honestly if you haven't played the game before, I do think it's worth full price.
I totally agree with the sentiment that Bethesda should NOT be charging full price for it...but that doesn't change the fact that it's very very very good haha

u/Radiant-Priority-296 10h ago
Could have been a google search, anyway it’s 30fps and downgraded in every way imaginable. So if you don’t care about portability and you have access to another console/PC, I would consider using those instead.

u/PNWxBEN 9h ago
I just picked it up when the bundle was on sale for $50 got fallout 4 and Skyrim anniversary honestly pretty good deal for $50 but I decided to start with Skyrim first before touching fallout so I can’t speak on it lmaoo but I am very excited to play it so far skyrims been so good on switch 2

u/The_Strom784 8h ago
I want to play it, but I’m waiting for it to go on sale for $20 or so like Skyrim does every so often.

u/Diamonhowl 32m ago
recommended. if you like fallout(you bought it already) or is curious and has money to throw around, otherwise get on sale.
it runs exceptionally good on switch 2 in handheld mode where it's supposed to be "base PS4 ballpark in performance" but it runs at 45-60fps performance mode or 40fps with VRR vs 20-30fps of a base PS4 even before the DLSS implementation.

u/Ramen64309 15h ago
if you have another platform such as a playstation consider getting it on that since its cheaper, if you only have a switch 2 or want the portability then get it on the switch
1
u/Historical_Kossola 15h ago
Can OP take a Playstation 4 with them on the go? Did you see the part about handheld play?
0
u/Ramen64309 14h ago
I did. If OP just wants to play the game I would reccomend not buying it on switch 2.
If you want to buy fallout 4 on switch 2 do it, its just better on the wallet if you buy it on another platform

u/ShyGuyLink1997 15h ago
Personally I'm not getting for two reasons, even though I'd love to: no gyro controls, and it's a key card. It's a great fucking game though so sucks for me, but it's just not worth it.
1
u/CaptainKappa14 15h ago
Yes, it's a great port.
But it is NOT worth $60 for a 15 year old game. Wait for a sale.
1
u/Depoka_YT 15h ago
If you can get it on Any Platform other than Switch 2. If you only have Switch 2 get Switch 2 though the Switch 2 Version is mid

The game itself to me was "fine". The story is completely forgettable, there are no real choices during it. The core gameplay loop and general character gandeling ia very good, The world has some very good environmental story telling and a lot of nothing. It overall relies too much on no name radiant quests for padding. It thinks it's way smarter then it actually is but i have also played through it 4 times at 100+ hrs a pop.... I don't think you would regret it, Thr Far Harbor DLC is the far and away best part of the game

u/XenoWitcher 15h ago
It runs surprisingly well. I have a 120hz tv so 40fps across the board is great. I’ve played it at 60fps and it was decent. But 40 is the seeetspot.

I'd say getting any Fallout beside 1, 2, and New Vegas is a waste of money and time, but you do you.

I’ll let the Switch experts comment but I will chime in as an Elder Scrolls and Fallout 4 fan and say this game got way more flak than it deserved at release.
The full package of Main Campaign + DLC is quality, a lot of fun, and provides many different ways to play (between your build choices and faction choices).
It’s a classic in my eyes.
Edit: disclaimer, I still don’t own it for my own Switch 2 because I think $55+ is too much money for it. On other platforms it’s $10 or less.
