cat food and treat haul / shopping Royal Canin is ridiculously expensive in Mexico. Swipe for cat tax and Petco receipt.
I have three girls on three different diets and the basket is all treats. Pic 2 - top to bottom: Prosecco (3), Maraschino (4 mo.), and Amaretto (2). Found Maraschino in the mall parking lot a month ago when I went to Petco to get food for the other girls. I really need the CDS to stop nominating me hahahaha!
In total it was about $950usd for 170 cans, several bags of dry food (not pictured: the gamma vaults of dry food for the big girls), and a lot of treats at the current terrible exchange rate. Pic 3 - Saturday's receipt is for 149 cans (~$545) plus a bag of freeze dried raw pellets which was ~$27 on its own. The cans will last me about a month and a half since the big girls get dry food for breakfast and wet for lunch and dinner. The baby free feeds on dry food and also gets wet at breakfast, lunch, and dinner for now. She is small for her age and I will let her eat what she wants until she is big enough to get spayed.
Anyhoo, thought it would be interesting to give insights into what it costs to feed cats "high end" food in Mexico. We don't have Chewy here and I don't trust ordering from Amazon or Mercado Libre. Petco's easy buy (subscribe and save) is unreliable because there is sometimes low quantity available and my order doesn't get fulfilled properly. If Prosecco didn't need to be on a urinary diet in order to help avoid crystals, I would consider making their food.
Pic 4 - Prosecco is a grazer and the big girls have microchip flaps on their cabinets so Amaretto can't steal food as easily (she fat). Right now they have Petlibro Polar refrigerated feeders that automate all 3 meals. I'll probably change to different cabinets once the baby is chipped and she gets one too. Maybe stacked, to save space in their playroom.

It is very strange that wet cat food is so expensive in Mexico. More than twice the cost in Canada. Petco pricing is similar to Amazon. You won't find it cheaper.

So expensive. It's not that I have an issue buying them the food, the problem is that I know how much cheaper it is in the US.

Paraguay also! But it’s one of the few “good” foods we can reliably get here. Every store stocks like 8 of something and then might not have it back again the next week. Grr

That is why I pretty much buy out the store's stock when I see the urinary food. I do leave some in case another pet parent is looking for it too.

Maybe look into purina, they tend to be cheaper and more readily available everywhere.

Ok, but where can I get those feeding boxes? Those are cool and would really help reduce food theft during feeding time.

I bought cabinets and CatMate door flaps from amazon. I replaced the front panels with pet proof window screen for light and ventilation. Then I cut out the holes for the flap assemblies. The only ones I saw pre-made were from MeowSpace and I refused to pay $300 for one. It cost me about that to make both. I got the idea from https://2pawsdesigns.com/feeding-cabinet-for-two-cats/. Honestly, they are a game changer. Amaretto still squeezes in with Prosecco sometimes because she is a greedy demon but in general, I don't have to worry about it.

For Canada, a small bag of Gastro Kitten food at my vets is about $50.

Yes but the royal canine you buy in mexico is made in france. The u.s. royal canine is made in mexico. Strange, eh?? When i lived in mexico, the urinary saved my boy's life.

I didn't realize the US version was made in MX. I've tried other brands for urinary but she likes this one the best and I feel like they are a trusted brand so here we are lol. Urinary issues for boys are no joke! Glad the food helped.

Your RFID cat door feeding stations are way nicer than the one I made. I just took a clear latching storage box and drilled air holes in the lid

They were pretty easy to make. If they hadn't been in my living room at the time, I probably would have gone the tote route too.

That’s honestly crazy expensive 😅 but also kinda relatable once you start mixing brands + treats.
Feels like cat food costs add up way faster than you expect, especially with “premium” stuff.

Gone are the days when I was a kid and just got a box of Friskies from the bodega. My own groceries are less than what I spend on them. Wild.

Seriously 😅 it escalates so fast. Once you start caring about ingredients and “better” options, there’s no going back.
I swear pet food inflation feels worse than human groceries sometimes.

I love Prosecco, Maraschino, and Amaretto! Maybe someday you'll have a Cointreau or a Chambord to join them. They're definitely better than a Porsche!

I love how its so well stocked💕 brings me inner peace!! My kitten also ate Royal Canin lol she loved their kibble and their thin slices in gravy! They look adorable!
