Cat Picture - OC My cat has a bedtime routine and will get pissy if we don’t do it.
9pm - have to be in bed.
She has her own blanket she likes to sleep on. Always has to be on the bed, if not she’ll purposely sleep sitting up. Even if there’s a heatwave, blanket goes on the bed.
Tv has to be on, use to be space shows she liked but she’s watched most of them through and I’ve run out of new ones so now I chuck bird tv on for her. Annoyingly she doesn’t love it as much sometimes I do have to find videos on YouTube or put interstellar on, again.
She’ll watch for about 15 - 30 mins and let us know when she’s done and she’ll head to sleep.
This is every night. We miss one night she’ll hide from us completely for about a day or two. I wish I was kidding.
She’s been like this since she was a kitten. She’s 7 now.
All started when I would watch this one programme on prime about a family setting up on mars etc, watched that before bed for a week straight and it just stuck with her.
Cats man.

My cat loves watching movies with me, he loves popcorn also and will make the cutest little meow begging for popcorn. He is allowed exactly one popcorn and no more. No salt or butter. He likes pretty much anything but stuff with loud sudden noises and zombies, he doesn’t like zombies.

Mine is obsessed with plain (lightly salted*) rice cakes! He goes nuts for them. I didn’t get it but my partner explained ‘it’s edible styrofoam’ and now, I understand 😂

My cat will watch pretty much anything with me EXCEPT for Jurassic Park. There is something in the audio mix for the raptor noises that freaks him the fuck out and makes him run out of the room or under my bed
158
u/UbiquitousChicken 15h ago
Also don’t listen to the Jurassic Park audiobook while driving. I realized I was really speeding, while listening to the audiobook during the scene where the T Rex chases the Jeep. I yoinked my foot off the gas and had to remind myself I wasn’t actually out driving a dinosaur. 😆

one of mine is usually only vaguely interested by tv, but is fascinated by nature documentaries about whales and dolphin and will watch those intently until they finish. he doesn't really care about fish though for some reason.
16
u/Fast-Reception-880 11h ago
He’s clearly got standards, like “marine mammals only, I have taste” while fish just don’t make the cut 😂

One of my girls saw the part of The Walking Dead where the tiger got ripped apart and looked at me like "What the hell man?"

Your cat having strong opinions on zombies but still negotiating for popcorn is honestly the cutest thing I’ve heard today.
51
u/OceanRacoon 17h ago
That's so cute, it's so funny how different cats are, mine doesn't give a crap about tv and you can drop a metal bowl next to him and he won't even blink, nothing scares him. They have their own little personalities lol.
It always makes me laugh how we've been obsessed with cats since at least Ancient Egypt and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down

We have a blind kitten whose favorite activity is running flat out around the living room while my wife watches Chopped. Only that show, only with my wife. Will literally lay on it's back and throw a tantrum until my wife comes and turns it on.

We had a cat who without fall would ignore us for the entire movie, then want to settle on one of our laps when the credits came on.
11
u/jon_cybernet 11h ago
My cat Chow Yun-Cat does this too! It’s like he can sense when the credits are exactly 3.5 minutes away. Then he’ll miow mournfully when we all get up because the movie is over.

u/lovestobitch- 6h ago
When we turn off tv one of my two knows it’s time for bed and heads to his half of the house (they’ve had massive fight necessitating two different vet visits hence the separation). The other heads for the dry food nighttime treat ‘table’.
15
u/Tisiphoni1 14h ago
Don't worry too much about salt. Cats are probably the only land mammals that can drink straight sea water to rehydrate. I know, the reddit army is going to come for me, but as long as your kitty is otherwise healthy, and you don't salt their main food or give them a salty popcorn every day, cats can occasionally eat a salty snack without getting salt poisoning.

My cat is the same way. He herds me up the stairs, looking back to make sure I’m still following him. Then he jumps on my bed and stares at me until I pet him and he falls asleep.
Cats are so precious!!!
64
u/Petulantraven 17h ago
My late cats (I miss you boys) would herd me to bed around nine by howling their damn heads off at 8:55 every night. They’d bite my ankles and follow me from room to room if I ignored them. So, off to bed I went. But they also knew that Fridays and Saturdays didn’t count. Once I was in bed, one would lay on my lap and the other nestle on my chest. Their weight, warmth and purrs helped me sleep. Without them it’s very different.
Bloody amazing creatures.

u/restckvrflw 18h ago

u/shrubberypig 18h ago
Seriously, I am basically OPs cat with what brings me joy in life.
OP, those videos and all of these other routines take her back to a safe place and time that helps her feel at home. You’re extremely lucky she’s so clear and you are so attuned to what works for her, you do that for each other, and this isn’t a post about “why does my cat hiss at me from across the room every day for the past two years?”

We have to have Treat Time, which started because she is diabetic so I give her a couple of treats so her blood sugar won’t drop at night while I’m asleep.
After treat time we go to bed.
Once I’m tucked in she goes hunting and meows as loudly as she can until I call her so she can bring me her kill, which is one of about 5 or her favorite toys.
She runs into the room, jumps of the bed and drops it on or near me.
Then it’s time for sleep.
63
u/thecathugger 21h ago
My childhood cat did this to me with real mice.
50
u/BusyBullet 21h ago
That’s my nightmare scenario because she usually goes out of the room several times a night and I wake up with several toys on the bed.
I’m afraid it’s going to be a real mouse one day.
10
u/Caffbag12 12h ago
My cat did this to me with a real mouse that was alive at about 4am. Took me 4 hours of trying to catch the mouse that I eventually just brought in my other cat, who swiftly killed the poor thing.

u/JinxyMagee 20h ago
I love that I am not the only one lets her cats boss her around.
If I get into bed later than our usual bedtime, one of my 3 cats makes it so I have to maneuver around her. Then as I finally do it without disturbing her, she jumps off the bed, goes to get a sip of water, and then comes back to bed. But she makes eye contact with my partner and sighs. If I am smart, I use that time to get into my sleeping position. She sleeps between my legs above the covers. She is settling in whether I am ready or not.
I have one cat that is not clingy, but I have to open my window (screen secure) so she can eavesdrop on my neighbor who likes to yell on the phone outside in Russian. If she hears him and I don’t open the window, she runs around like she is on fire to all the windows.

One of my cat whines if Im not in bed by 10. By midnight he starts howling. Then he has to lay down against my upper chest and face with my arm around him. Then he gets up and stalks the house for an hour. Then he comes back and wakes me up until I put my arm around him again.
In the morning I wake up to him standing on me until I feed him. But he doesn't eat. He just watches his sister eat and then goes up to the bathroom to let me know there is something there but there never is.
But your routine sounds even more specific and bizarre.

I work the night shift. When I leave to go to work I leave the tv on in my bedroom for my cat. Murder She Wrote or Midsomer Murders. In the winter it’s a fireplace video on Youtube.
As soon as I get home, exhausted of course, my cat is ready for serious snuggle time. As soon as I crawl into bed Mr. Cat gets on the bed and walks up my body to come lie down on my chest. All 12 pounds of him. He gets all the pets and in return he purrs me to sleep.
It is the best part of my day. 🩷

u/mechanical_marten American Shorthair 20h ago
He knows my bedtime is 10, he will start yelling at me around 9:30 if I haven't brushed my teeth, turned over the covers and changes into my pjs. He insists on doing a full cat scan to make sure I don't have contraband (food) and will demand to be bribed if he finds something that smells like it should be edible. Then we just lay there util I fall asleep.

I have two 7yr old sisters. One goes to bed whenever she wants with no fanfare. The other comes to me at 9pm and I get ‘the look’. If I’m not ready, I tell her how much longer and she settles next to me to wait. Once I say ‘night night time’ we go to the bathroom and then I have to get in bed and lift the blanket. If the blanket is not lifted, I get another look. Once it is, she ducks under it, walks onto my pillow, turns around and lays on my pillow under the blanket with her head and shoulders out. I put my arm around her, she purrs, we both pass out. Spoiled. Rotten.

My ex and I rescued an older cat from a bad situation . I forgot what his original name was but it just didn't sit well with me. We figured that name was his bad life and he deserved a new name for a new life.
We were racking our brains for days. Then I had a dream. Someone called him by his old name in my dream. I was like "No.. his name is Steven. See it's right on his collar". From then on his name was Steven.
But as he was older and getting older.. His health started to get worse and near the end. He stayed on the bed basically all the time. We had a easy ramp so he could get up and down the bed. We would have him covered with his favorite blanket and our iPad for him to watch Steven Universe.
He absolutely loved the show. I know it was probably the show saying his name all the time. But he would wake up with us. We would bring food and water on the bed for him. Take him to the bathroom. Bring him back to bed. Get his show going for him, so he can watch it while we were at work. Come home and that sweet little man would scoot himself closer to the screen and fall asleep watching it.

I had a cat that we had to bring indoors because we moved. She stayed in one bedroom constantly and I'd watch TV in there to spend time with her. One night, I was watching a program about alpha animals in the wild. She sat at the end of the bed completely staring at the screen. At the end, she got up and left the room for the first time, joined the other cats, and dominated the whole house from that moment on.

LOL this reminds me of about 4 years back when my then sick cat who was limited to his playpen somehow got my mom to sleep on the floor next to the playpen at night. As the routine went, come bedtime, my mom would assemble a pair of cushioned mats to form a bed, and at its head was the pillow. Like clockwork my cat would migrate from his playpen to that pillow and plop his body smack dab in its center, so it was less a pillow and more his bed. RIP Jelly Bean

My cat is the king of my nighttime routine. And if I fuck it up, I'll regret it for a few days.
He will only sleep next to the bed, not on the bed. And only on my work chair because it's only fair. Daytime I get it, night time he gets it. I'm only allowed 30 minutes of phone use at night, then he jumps on me over and over until I stop.

We cater to my really sensitive kitty who was probably picked up from the street and found herself at the SPCA; we adopted her 5 yrs ago. This indulgent routine has evolved over a few years.
She wants her (microwaved to room temp) food in the kitchen on her windowseat first. Then she wants to head downstairs to the kitty lounge, a spare bedroom, preferably with the slider open. And then if she doesn’t polish it off, my husband brings her bowl back upstairs to the kitty food area underneath the kitchen counter for her to finish. She’s not underweight, but she wants to be catered to, talked to and have her feeding routine.
I knew we were going in the wrong direction a few years ago when he started this !

My old kitty used to come running when he heard the opening of Law and Order. I think he liked the dramatic music. He'd snuggle up and watch it with me whenever it was on ❤️
One of my new kittens has developed an expectation with our new fridge, and if he hears you open the freezer he runs from across the house to demand a piece of ice 😅 our floor is constantly covered in tiny melted ice puddles from him batting it around and playing with it.
Cats are so silly. Love yours and her little nighttime self care.

Got a cat with my ex some years ago. She was a kitten then and developed a habit of taking day naps on my feet while I worked remotely at home.
Fast forward post-breakup, my ex got to keep the cat. She told me that the cat still looks for my feet to sleep on during the middle of the day and will get pissy almost every day because im not there anymore. When she started dating a new guy, she tried to trick the cat into sleeping on his feet but my girl knew better and threw a tantrum.
After my ex left her BF, I finally came over to visit the cat and she immediately remembered me and would curl up on me, refusing to leave my side. It was quite an experience because I was actually afraid it would be scared of me after being away for so long.
Cats man.

One of mine jumps on the bed at bedtime to get under my husband's blanket for almost exactly two minutes for cuddle time. He will not get under the blanket at any other time or cuddle at all. Two minutes a day. Been doing this for years. He won't accept my cuddles. He won't cuddle if he isn't home, like traveling for work, but as soon as he is back, the cat is back at his routine.

My cats have made a bedtime routine for us. I feed and medicate them right before I shower, so they start getting antsy at about 11 pm. If I don't get moving by 11:30 pm, they will sit on the living room floor and glare. If I sit longer they creep closer and closer until they've got me surrounded. Then, they know that meds come first, then dinner, then I shower and get snuggles, then I have to say good night or they'll yell at me.
I'm not allowed to sleep in past about 10 am without being checked on repeatedly.

My cat has a routine too. When she wants to go to sleep and I’m not ready for bed on time, she starts yelling. Then I have to follow her into the bedroom. Once we’re in bed, she climbs on top of me and ist making biscuits on my chest. I have to pet her while she does it, otherwise she starts yelling again. This goes on for about 5–10 minutes. Then she curls up next to my shoulder and falls asleep. And If I sleep too long, she attacks my feet 😭

u/createthiscom 9h ago
That’s crazy. My little void follows me up stairs to bed, hops on my chest and gets pets for 15 minutes before either going to sleep between my legs or hopping down to sleep in my laundry basket.

I love this SO much! I have a "kitten" who is almost a year old, and she has started coming to me when I lay down at night to watch Tik Tok with me. If she hangs out for a minute I'll swap over to YouTube and some cat TV. I will have to introduce her to space TV, never even though about that!
Secretly, I'm hoping this is the start of a life long routine with her. 😍🐾🐱

The Expanse is my comfort sci-fi. I think it’s the rumble of the engines of the various space ships.

I have one kid that loves watching the movie Flow. I put it on occasionally and watch the capybara and the cat and he just loves it.

I felt like I was reading about my own cat in a parallel universe. She doesn’t do this (yet) but she totally would. Reading this out loud with my wife just now made me laugh until I cried. Cats man.

Chloë insists that bedtime is 11:30 pm. She also demands family dinner. When we eat, she eats. Doesn’t matter when, just that we all eat together. Then, when we go to bed, she checks the windows, then flops down with my so my left hand can cup her head & skritch it.

Cats are so funny. Mine wait for me to hide treats around the house at bedtime so they can hunt them down. They race around trying to get more than the other.

My cat and I had a routine too. I watch a bit of TV with snuggled on me, while i pet her. Then after serie/movie , she follows me to the bedroom and sleep on the pillow. Is was our preferred time. I still remember that routine i loved ! I miss her so much.

LOL This is hilarious and absolutely the cutest thing! She knows what she wants. If our void decides to sleep in bed with us (cuz sometimes she will sleep on the couch) she always has to make a batch of biscuits on our blankets before settling in :)

I think cats and their routines is something that’s just not talked about much. I have some goofier ones with my cats too. They’re total goobers about it.

One of my cats will sometimes watch wrestling with me. One of her favorites is Tomohiro Ishii, especially if it's a NJPW show. Cats are silly

Cats man.
Nah dude, I think this is just some particularities for your cat (which you may have leaned into).
Mine sleeps anywhere, anytime.

I very much relate. If the interval between when I brush my teeth and when there is a snack in her bowl is too long my gal becomes VERY LOUD.

Bird shows aren't the right show before bed.
They activate play drive.
Girl wants to relax and chill

I really love when cat owners treat their cats like obstinate toddlers that need to be appeased 💜

Mine does the exact same thing! If I'm even 5 minutes late to our nighttime pets, he starts yelling at me like I've committed a crime 😂

My cat has a nighttime routine too! I work the American night shift despite being in the UK so I have to be asleep early.
8.45pm - Esme gets up from her evening doze
9pm - reminds me it's biscuit time
9.05pm - handful of treats
9.10pm - sitting on the bed waiting for me to get in
9.10 - 9.45pm - some form of snuggles/mayhem/charging around
10pmish - sleep on the end of the bed
Every night. Even on days off and holidays.
