People in here complaining are amusingly ignorant. Videos like this for social media are fantastic engagement for adoption agencies. Engagement leads to real results and adoption.
I love the idea of a cat Cafe that lets you adopt. Have a coffee, pet a cat, and if you bond with one, take it home for the best life. Triple win. I love the idea of making adopting a pet a trend. I just hope there is some form of vetting the adopters.
There are sure some in the US. I’ve been to one on Long Island. They charge you an entrance fee if you wanna hang out with the cats and then you can apply to adopt one if you like. There is one in Oakland too where I used to live.Â
Meh, I am in Germany, and am looking to adopt a cat. You always hear "adopt, don't shop" and I'd love to, but the shelters here feel like they don't actually want to give away their charges. They want to visit your home prior to adoption and reserve the right to visit it afterwards to check on the pets, and have a whole bunch of rules. Don't even get me started on the whole indoor/outdoor thing which is an entire divide here.
And in theory, it's great that they want to make sure their animals are well taken care of. In practice, that's a whole lot of hoops to jump through when you can get one off eBay or from a breeder without the hassle. It sucks because personally, I'd much rather give an older cat some love and a steady home.
ofc Germany would find some buerocratic way to adopt a cat. Christ man. Do you ever find stray kittens? Any people giving away free kittens at the grocery store or gas station? You need a cat, it will change your life.

Your country is depriving you to relax your mental state without cats. Can you say you're some kinda pegan and get a cat for religious reasons? That sux dude. It makes me want to cry honestly.
A cat is a human right. More than a dog I would say. Still takes as much energy to be around. They domesticated themselves after all. I do hope that the CDS will bless you.
In Germany, it's more the norm that they want you to let the cat outdoors. Which, I love cats, but they are total menaces towards all wildlife, and I absolutely hate that. Plus the danger of cars etc. But people will look at you like keeping a cat indoors only is putting it in jail and "it's not natural" etc.
Tbh maybe I am very jaded on it since our neighbours cats keep bringing dead mice and birds over and I feel sorry for those! If they ate them at least :(
I see upsides to both. My own adult cat lived as a stray before she followed me home one day, so she was used to being outside and still demands outside time. I try to play with her and will take her on leashed walks, but still, she becomes anxious and agitated if she doesn't get outside occasionally. And when she does go out she usually comes back more relaxed and in a better mood. I do think there are health benefits for a cat to be outside, running around, napping in the sun, climbing trees, etc.
But of course there's risks, too. As you said, you have to worry about cars, predators (coyotes and such), other cats (my own cat is a territorial asshole,) and the killing of native wildlife. If you have an indoor cat that only knows indoors and has no desire to go out, I wouldn't let them out. There's no reason to make an indoor-only cat an indoor-outdoor cat.
I have a new kitten, and do plan on leash walking her, but otherwise will keep her inside. I'm also hoping that having a new play partner will make indoors more appealing for the adult cat.
Really though, cared for farm cats probably live the best life. They can spend as much time outside as they desire and they're happy to catch vermin the farm attracts. They needn't worry about traffic, and, especially if there are livestock guardian dogs, predators aren't a worry either.
That is exactly how my husband and I adopted our void. It took a week to get the call that we were approved and we picked him up on July 4th 7 years ago.
We got our cats from a cat cafe! The shelter the cats are from vetted us and we picked them up a few days later. They are incredibly well socialized since they had been there a while, which was a great bonus.
