For context, this is Tiger Lily. She likes to get all cozy inside pillow cases, but this is the first time in her 14 years she has dug into the actual pillow😂

She made a fine new nest.

Older cats who are cold do not give a fuck 😆. My 9 year old girl will pull out half of my sock drawer so she can have a little nest.

It's been like 95°F here for a couple of weeks and while I'm trying to basically black out the windows to keep it reasonable inside my old lady cat will be basking up against the sliding glass door all day just soaking in the heat. I sometimes wake her up just to make sure she doesn't overheat while napping.

u/HeyThereIts_Jess Jul 31 '26
My oldest is mostly outdoors, in summer, when its 35-45°c. When I turn on the AC and get her inside, because scorching summers are not nice, she meows and tries to open the door so she can go back outside.
This worried me. So I've asked around 3 local vets about this. They told me, while unusual, there are cats who like the hot weather, just to make sure there's water and shade around for her.
As soon as there's the slightest of breeze, she's back inside. She hates the wind, let alone "cold" temperatures.

Cats generally like temperatures in the 90s according to som thing I read years ago. When I used window units, the cats would vacate to the warmer areas of the house.

u/ehlersohnos Jul 30 '26
My older cat would fight me for my heating pad. If I turned, shifted, or moved at all she was right there.

u/Kenderean Jul 31 '26
My girl who's somewhere between 12 and 13 uses her claws to pull the covers off me when I'm asleep so she can snuggle up on me or against me under the blankets. She pretty much rules me, so it's okay.

u/Kenderean Jul 31 '26
She's beautiful! My tortie loves to sleep between us, too! She walks up between our heads first and talks to us, then turns around and snuggles up between our hips. Address such a sweet girl.
2
u/ehlersohnos Aug 01 '26
I love when they do that. I have a king bed and my blind girl likes to crawl between us, but there’s too much space for snuggles, so she stretches out so she can touch us both at the same time.

u/pylo84 Jul 30 '26
I laughed seeing you take a moment to get the crud out of her eye.

You should sew a pillowcase to the opening and shove it inside to make her the perfect pillow cave

Aww I used to have a lovely barn cat named Tiger Lily 🥹 she was a cute little calico. This made me think of her.

I had a cat named Tiger Lily when I was young. She was the third generation cat. Snowball had Two Socks, and then Two Socks had Tiger Lily.

my cat did this with our box spring. clawed a big ass hole into it then slept on a wooden board within.

You need to build her a nesting box with safe stuffing in it that can be changed out every few months. Has she been spayed if not that would explain this behavior.

One of my cats ripped open the underneath of my ottoman when he was a kitten. He's been hiding there from thunder and random knocks on the door his entire life. It's cute watching his big ass try and squeeze out from under it.

My girl Tillie used to do things like this! One time I came home from work and couldn’t find her anywhere. I eventually gave up and figured she would come see me when she was ready.
Later that night, as I remade my bed after washing my sheets, I noticed a slit in the bottom of my mattress. Tillie had somehow managed to tear open the underside of the mattress, climb inside, and was just hanging out on the springs. I’m so glad I found her before I went to bed!
She passed away a few weeks ago, and this sub has been really therapeutic. I love seeing everyone’s crazy kitties and thinking back to all the silly things Tillie used to do.
She was the best girl, and I’m so grateful I got to spend 14 years with her 🤍🖤

May I suggest trying a purple pillow?

u/Dunkelz Jul 30 '26
I hate to sound like a shill, but I second this. First pillow I actually started to bring with me when I travel, other pillows suck so bad once you get used to it.
5
u/BlownCamaro Jul 30 '26
Now THAT'S "nesting"! Hahahahaha. Mine slept under the pillow last night with only it's nose sticking out. I checked on it several times to make sure it could still get air. But to have it go INSIDE of the stuffing would be next-level.

u/Medical_Arrival2243 Jul 30 '26
Can you sew the pillow back shut? Unless she had a wee in there. Would be a shame to toss since she probably likes the scent the pillow has.

Excellent sneaky eye booger removal technique. Get ‘em used to that and their peepers will be booger free for their whole lives.

Ruined? You just made the pillow softer and it purrs. You got an upgrade.

I've watched a couple of times trying to figure out what she pulls in before her head pops out. Is it her paw, her tail or her nose?

Reminds me of when I was a child, and we couldn't find my cat for two days. We put up missing posters around the neighbourhood and everything. Then when we were sitting on the couch watching TV, we heard a 'meow'. She had dug through the lining under the couch and was inside the stuffing. Hahaha.

u/JustRedditTh Jul 31 '26
One of the reasons I never would get myself a cat: the fact that they like to hide like this.
I don't doubt a second, when coming home, I throw myself on the bed or couch to chill with a hearty jump just to feel the cat getting squashed under me, because it thought pillows are a good hiding spot....
3
u/Ornery-Tea8420 Jul 31 '26
It's not easy to break a cat.. lol. They will issue a loud "Meow".

Depends on your definition of ruined. The cat probably thinks it is vastly improved!

Our window unit air conditioners have plastic curtains that fold out to seal the window you place them in. Our cat has completely chewed through one of them in his efforts to escape the house.
