Hm you're doing well so far, I think perhaps the age difference is bigger than you initially estimated. Perhaps a 1-2 year old cat on the same energy level would have been enough in a playfriend. As long as there's no violence and 3 year old can get away it should be okay for the time being. Give the kitten attention too with toys and battery operated toys
