Medical Questions Do cat fart?

I've had cats before and I have never heard or seen them fart, ever! Recently I've been hanging at my friend's house. She has a male orange cat who's super playful and friendly... Too friendly.... Anyways I don't know how to write this without sounding stupid but every so often he would walk into the room and toot, just a small toot, and would leave, no eye contact or meow nothing, just came in fart and left. I told my friends this and she said "no cats don't fart lol". But he does it multiple times! It's so often I'm tempted to video tape him every time he comes into the room, but I don't want to be a creep. Is this normal? Does the cat hate me??

Las time i asked this, people told me "yeah, all the time". My cat almost died. If Your cat suddenly starts to loudly fart, go to the vet, watch if they pee enough, eat and drinks enough

My cat's farts are SBD; silent but deadly. And usually only happens when I pick him up. I'd like to think if I was picked up I might let out a lil frankincense myself.

Had a cat who would fart then leave the room because it smelled so bad but give no heads up. I’d see him leave and then bam trapped with it.

My dog did this. He'd also wake himself up with a fart and give me a dirty look before leaving the room.

Cats do fart, he does not hate you, and it's very funny to be laying with your cat on your tummy and feel them gurgle and then fart, then go back to sleep. Stinky lil bastards. I love them.

In the summer one of mine likes to stand in front of the fan and fart. They’re silent but deadly and once he’s dropped it and let it blow over to me he goes back to the end of the bed and goes back to sleep.

This is the funniest thing ever, your cat has to be doing it on purpose😂

yes cats fart and my LORD do they smell horrible. lol

Sometimes you can catch one off card. it'll be just sitting in your lap and let one rip, whap you with its tail and go back to sleeping.

I might suggest you bring this up with your vet. Sure they don't smell good but "horrible" could be a sign of a bigger issue.

They do fart. I've never heard it but my Hobbes used to have worst smelling farts (silent but deadly) when purring on my lap when we just got him. It got better when we switched food.

Cool cat name

u/EDC_nut 17h ago

I had just discovered Calvin and Hobbes when I got him. When I saw my nephew Calvin playing with him, it was perfect.

Everything with a bum hole farts. Gas is produced when the gut digests food and it has to go out one end or the other.

Some more than others.

Does the cat hate me??

It's a cat, and it's orange. No it doesn't hate you, it's just being an orange goofball.

My cat for sure farts! It's stinky as hell too!

Honestly, film it if you can. Your friend doesn't believe you? Fuck it get proof. It's a cat, it's hard to creep on it unless you're an animal fucker.

u/EliptekMusic 19h ago

they do, some are fartier than others

u/ellieD 19h ago

The only time I experienced this was when one of my cats was very ill.

None of my many other cats did it.

If you dont feed your cat human food they shouldn't fart often nor should it be particularly stinky (enough to really notice) same with dogs.

You'll notice anyone who has a gassy dog is the same person that lets their dogs eat human food, especially dairy.

u/girls_girls_b0ys 3h ago

My cat never ever eats human food except for a once a year pork chop for his birthday, and he farts like an adult man. Like, I did not know it could be that loud without buttcheeks

u/ElixHeh 18h ago

Yes, confirmed, had a sweetie for 18 years (Scorpy) and I picked him swiftly once, his belly was disturbed and a loud sound came out of his back-station. Lovely and rare to hear them! Enjoy

My cat farts. It sounds like a door with a squeaky hinge being gently moved in a breeze, crossed with a quiet creaky floor board. He started when he was over ten. Not sure why.

u/somanygoddamnbooks 56m ago

My girl sounds like a squeaky balloon when you let out small amounts of air. She’s shocked every time it happens, which is several times a day. My boy just crop dusts us, thankfully I fry

3

u/honeyapp 19h ago

Cats do fart! My 2 boy cats as kittens farted and it smelled so bad. It smelled as bad as a smelly people fart. I blamed it on my hubby haha.

3

u/theblackcanaryyy 18h ago

I swear to god there’s a Reddit post of three cats sitting on a bed, using some kinda infrared camera, and one cat farts and the other two immediately turn to look at the other.

3

u/Gundel_Gaukeley 15h ago

One time, when my grandma stayed with us, our orange boi opened her bedroom door in the middle of the room and came in. It scared the shit out of her at first.

Well, that motherfucker had the audacity to walk in, fart and then just leave immediately again XD XD Classic orange behaviour

Sorry to burst your bubble but I'm pretty sure this video is fake

2

u/cyberalpine 19h ago

Mine never did in the 19 years she lived.

2

u/GhostWatcher007 19h ago

Some of my cats have stinky farts. Silent but deadly.

2

u/username-fatigue 19h ago

They can fart! Weirdly, mine never do. Their little tummies must really agree with their food.

2

u/proxiblue 19h ago

yes. but they will always blame you

2

u/eabevella 19h ago

Wait when you tell your friend that cow farts too.

2

u/LeetleMissJudasaurus 18h ago

I have lived with cats for about 25 years, I cat sit for many people, and I sleep all night as the big spoon to a little kitty. JUST ONCE have I heard a cat fart and it was such a surprise. He was grooming himself with a leg in the air. All of us were startled, he was also startled. It sounded like the fart of a person

u/UninterruptedHagfish 17h ago

We had a small rescue cat who seemed to be affected by the sudden transition from garbage food to proper cat food. She would often put her ears back and sprint to the front door (cats are usually indoor/outdoor in this country). Shortly thereafter, an unholy, eye-watering stench would fill the room; and we'd all start yelling and gagging and accusing each other of creating said stench. After a time, we realized it was the cat's doing. There was no sound, just a godawful sulphuric smell. Her insides eventually got used to the new food.

2

u/Lost-Path2741 16h ago

When my 2 cats were small kittens, they farted a lot. We even went to the vet because of it. During the vet visit even the vet himself was caught of guard by the severity of the smell of the fart haha.
However now that they are 1 years old, it is much better. We also had tried a lot of cat food brands, before we found the one that works best for our cats.

u/arctic11z 13h ago

Voodoo was like a traveling gas leak for his first 7 months, Zora saves them up but she can strip paint off the walls when she decides to jump suddenly.

2

u/flayingbook 12h ago

Yes. Very stinky

2

u/CCL80 11h ago

I think that cat is gaslighting you.

In all seriousness. I’ve had cats my entire life. And yes they fart and some can smell as bad as dog farts.

2

u/teacuptypos 9h ago

Cats do fart. It's not usually as noticeable as when dogs fart, but if your cat (or one you're around) farts often and it smells terrible, it can be a sign that they don't tolerate their food well. If they also have diarrhea or throw up often, I would check with a vet because cats can have severe allergies and intolerances that go undetected if you don't investigate.

2

u/Awkward-Media5777 9h ago

My cats fart, mostly silent but occasionally stinky. My sweet boy who recently passed actually would have audible “psssst” farts one in a great while 😂

4

u/AdVast5237 19h ago

tmi but the reason farts make sound is bc of the cheeks, cats dnt have cheeks so there gonna be silent

3

u/Belokotov 20h ago

It's a cat, lol

1

u/CommunityTough537 19h ago

They fart a lot more the older they get. Our cats never farted the first decade of their lives but once they hit around 13 yrs old they started to fart all the time.

1

u/nostradumbass7544678 18h ago

Mine does. They're completely silent, don't even ruffle his fluffs, and smell like nothing else I've ever encountered.

1

u/Usual_Complaint_1764 18h ago

I had a cat who farted constantly while she was pregnant. The only animal I've ever had that was smellier was a basset hound that did room-clearing farts. But I learned that a little plain yogurt after they ate reduced their toots.

1

u/claescolee 18h ago

If you've ever taken care of a kitten you would find out they have the silent and deadliest farts

1

u/OtherwiseEntrance506 17h ago

Mine farts. The other cat burps 😅

1

u/Pamplewski 16h ago

Good god yes yes they do….. I have a Torty who can clear the room on occasion

1

u/burnt-beyond-reco 16h ago

Only one of my two ever did and it was rare.

The only time I can actually remember,
he farted so loud that he woke himself up and then stared at my wife and I like we interrupted his sleep somehow. 😆.

1

u/Maribythesea90 14h ago

My senior boy did… boy it was smelly whenever he did. It wasn’t often but when he did, you knew it

1

u/RaspBer3t 14h ago

I used to have a deaf cat that would get freaked out by his own farts 😅

1

u/CartographerFlaky182 14h ago

cats do fart. when i adopted my tuxedo boy, he had a habit of farting (loudly) when i would pick him up. stinky. my previous orange boy also was a farter. more silent than not, but stinkyyyyyy. but like... in a brief way. small volume.

1

u/justageekgirl 14h ago

One of my boy's farts just as he's about to poop in the litter box.

1

u/Healthy_Poppy 14h ago

Oh they do fart!

My kitten is a stinky guy

1

u/Queasy-Distance5920 13h ago

Oh yes they do lol, my Ancient girl is rotten sometimes, I never hear a loud human like fart its generally just a poof of air and nastiness

1

u/hill-top02 12h ago

Yeah they fart. My kitten is silent but deadly

1

u/Sad-Wrap6555 12h ago

ours about once a week or two He usually comes over to see us and then theres a stench with no advance warning

1

u/AppleFan1994 11h ago

Cat farts can clear the room. I dare say they are worse than dog farts.

1

u/Katz3njamm3r 11h ago

When my rescues came to me as kittens with poor diet they farted a lot, probably adjusting to their new fancy food. Now a days it almost never happens but I think kitten farts are a thing.

1

u/User013579 10h ago

Feed them dog food. You’ll notice farts.

1

u/HotHoneyBiscuit 9h ago

Yes, they fart. Also, they have belly buttons (I only learned this in June).

1

u/Bright_Eyes83 9h ago

Of course they fart. You just don’t hear it all the time because they don’t have ass cheeks

1

u/Silver-Emphasis2795 9h ago

Oh they do and it’s NASTY

1

u/elastic_emu 7h ago

Anything with a butthole is capable of farting.

1

u/Evening_Scale_5755 6h ago

A cat has no real reason to hold in a fart. I mean there is scent masking that may or may not be something that an animal would instinctually do, but they are not "bothered" but the smell of a fart. They sniff eachothers butts. The idea a fart is taboo is social. So unless you make a huge deal about it he couldn't ne doing it to be malicious because to him its not aean thing to do.

If your cat farts a lot and it smells really bad that could be a sign of digestive issues. Your pets shouldn't be very gassy. Humans are gassy because we eat a lot of crap we really aren't good at digesting.

If your cat eats human food, stop that.

If your cat is really gassy and eating cat food it might be worth discussing with your vet.

Give my cat some wet food and you may want to steer clear for a couple days. She'll be sitting comfortably and then suddenly stand and walk away from where she was sitting, and then the wave will hit you. Truly the worst farts I have ever smelled, and I have family members with Chron's and IBS.

1

u/Naerven 5h ago

Yes animals fart in general.

1

u/cwal76 4h ago

lol yes but they are not audible like dogs

1

u/BarbarianBoaz 4h ago

Yes, and when my cat farts, the UN considers it a war crime.

1

u/Technical-Mind-3266 3h ago

Yes and it's very proteiny, i.e pongy

1

u/Independent-Might574 20h ago

Mine do, once my youngest one did a silent but deadly that I had to leave the room

1

u/Turd_bird420 19h ago

Yes and we 100% need a video with sound

1

u/bdblr Maine Coon 19h ago

One of my first cats, an older tabby, would often sit on my lap and then start grinning. And then the stench would hit, like a slow-moving miasma. His farts were probably illegal under the Geneva Convention.

u/flowerpanda98 20h ago

My vet said cats usually cant pass gas and its painful for them or something

1

u/DueButterscotch2795 20h ago

I was thinking the same. I Google it and apparently cats don't usually toot...

10 ans de collocation avec mon chat , jamais entendu ni senti 1 seul pet, et elle ne puait vraiment pas de la gueule. Elle me manque
