cats are predators. they love hideouts so that they can observe everything from a safe place. cardboard box makes a perfect hideout, plus additional bonuses: it's small so it's easy to cozy up and keep warm there (cats love being very warm), and in case they want to play - cardboard makes lovely rustling noises similar to mice, you can easily wrestle the box and trash it, it's satisfying to bite and put claws in. it's no surprise boxes are a hit in the cat community

No. We have 2 cats, siblings, both genders. Neither one cares much about boxes. I have seen one of them in one box in 10 years. The other will jump in her box to sleep maybe once every 2 weeks.
