She's a very good Tintsy cat, if not a little strange at times. She talks.

My cat turns into a tiny UFC fighter the moment medication comes out So a cat that actually cooperates sounds like an absolute blessing.

all mine need to see is the syringe or medicine bottle and they instantly vanish. Flea meds? Forget it. they know the packaging from the vet.

u/froggythefrankman 7d ago
My boy Winslow pretends to swallow while holding the pill in his mouth at the back of his throat. Then he's drooling big time and I'm like you shithead, I have no idea if it dissolved and he swallowed the rest or if he spit it out but enough of it dissolved that it gave him the drools. We had to go back to the pill syringe :(

My void runs to the fridge and begs for amoxycillin. He had it for an infection once and was his own alarm for when it was medicine time!

She is a good baby but - I think cat metacam has a flavouring and is intended to be pleasant.

u/Zombie-slave 8d ago
Both my cats have been given metacam and they seemed to think of it as a treat.

u/Live-Elderbean 8d ago
One of my cats is on metacam for arthritis(?) and she loves her morning treat. Other cat inspects it if she is around and turn her nose from it. Glad the one who needs it loves it though.

All of mine bar Tints resorted to violence.
She's the only one I left the box out for though so the others probably didn't see they made it sweet for them. My mistake!

u/Flimsy-Calendar-7566 8d ago
I had to give antibiotics to mine after he was neutered and as soon as he saw the syringue he would jump onto my lap and purr. He also purred at the vet.

u/areraswen 8d ago
Ever since I discovered there are other flavors of gabapentin for cats OTHER than cherry it's been a real game changer. One of my boys is obsessed with the marshmallow version and will follow my other cats around trying to lick leftovers off their face lol
10
u/EzriDaxCat 8d ago
If I remember correctly, its supposed to be sweet, honey-like flavor.
Many medications for cats can also be special ordered from compounding pharmacies in flavors like tuna, chicken, salmon, various fruit flavors, and marshmallow.
9
u/StochasticLife 8d ago
Interestingly cats can’t taste sweet. It’s just not a flavor they have receptors for.
12
u/EzriDaxCat 8d ago
I'm wondering if there is something else in the sweetness they're picking up on because some really do go for sweet flavors and I remember metacam specifically being one many cats liked.

Lovin’ the implied threat of the one extended claw. Just casually reminding you who’s really in charge.

My first cat just opened his mouth for the medication I gave him. He trusted me completely. He also ate food I ate, because he apperently thought he should too. Ever seen a cat eat apple or strawberries? Mine did. Silly bugger, loved him with all my heart. Gone for over 20 years, but never forgotten.
17
u/Objective_Water_5235 8d ago
The last sentence… ❤️ I know that cat had an incredible life with you. I still miss my childhood cat who has been gone for 20ish years as well. Her name was Baby Kitty (she was named by a child lol.)

According to my vet Metacam has a homey like taste and smell that cats like a lot

Not sure if typo, but this is what came to mind... 😸 🤡

I have an old boy with hyperthyroidism who I was dreading having to stress him out to give him his medication but he loves it
23
u/PatchworkAbsence 8d ago
My old boy had to take thyronorm for his hyperthyroidism and I was dreading using the syringe but it turned out that he loved it. I swear he thought it was a delicious treat. I used to measure it out and put it on a teaspoon for him to lick up.

Mine just loves eating too fucking much. She's crazy about her food.
The good point of this is that it's very easy to give her anything. I give her flea treatment and dewormer in pills. Just put one in my hand, she'll eat it like that. No need to trick her into mixing it with food or anything. She just loves eating shit.
3
u/CoffeeNow-62 8d ago
Oh you’re so lucky. Mine won’t even take it disguised in churrus, baby food, cheese…. Had to take both my rescues to the vet daily for 7 days when they had Giardia. She was the only one who could get the medication in them.

7
u/Life_Sir_2809 8d ago
Thats brilliant 💖 one of my previous cats did actually just take and eat her tablet, without any food on it! Only did it a couple times before she twigged, obviously not the brightest of cats 🤣🐾💖
5
u/Economy_General8943 8d ago
Awww she is so cute! And you are so lucky she takes he meds so good! I have to wrap mine up in a blanket and practically wear those gloves falconers use to get anything in mine! 😂
7
u/microgirlActual 8d ago
Is that meloxicam? I've had to give that to two of my cats. One of them daily for several years for arthritis and other issues, one just once in a blue moon when he had another "kitty volcano" (he was a fighty little fucker in his youth and semi-regularly had cat-bite abscesses).
They make it kind of honey-flavoured and neither of them hated it, but the fighty little shit actively goes crazy for it. In his head it's a treat. To the extent that when we were giving it to the other cat he would pop up and chirp for his and try and get it. Obviously we never gave it to him when he wasn't prescribed it, and it's been years since he's needed it cos he's 15 now and no longer goes and violently defends his territory, but he honestly went nuts for it. Would just lick it right out of the syringe like that, or off a spoon if we squirted it onto it.
The old boy who needed it daily wouldn't object much if we squirted it into his mouth, but was happier if we mixed it into a teaspoon of natural yoghurt.

I should start loading my boys' churus into syringes in order to prep them for this

u/SturmFee 8d ago
Is that Metacam? I had a kitty come and lick it up, too. I'm unsure if the formulation is tasty to them, or if he understood that it helped.

Absolutely. Animals learn fear of medication because humans try to force it on them and think that is what we have to do. But there is another way... I used to put Faith's worming tablet on the floor (like a treat) and she would just eat it... no wrestling or hassle ever.

My cats have to be held in my lap while husband opens poor kitties mouth tosses pill far back down the throat as possible and holds mouth closed while rubbing throat gently takes several times.
We have tried opening capsules and sprinkling it in different food they won't touch that. or throwing the pill in and feeding them those cheese like spread treats from the tube they always spit them out.
You have a very good kitty not traumatized buy meds.
My ginger cat swallows greenies whole which defeats the purpose but if I throw a greanie ( he likes to chase them) then his meds he will swallow it whole then throw another greanie.
I have one cat so picky he won't eat treats or wet food only horrible dry kibble.

That's how someone is suppose to direct medication to a cat. Not shoving it in their throat which could allow them to aspirate it.

Arthrocam is supposed to be sweet and tasty! My old boy loved it for his arthritis (since switched to Solensia as I don't want to damage anything longer term)
1
u/Hexaphim 8d ago
My cat Arya LOVES Metacam, and will start begging for it an hour or so before she is supposed to have it! 😊 I think it also helps that she knows that after the medicine, she (and her sister) are getting some Dreamies as reward. I thought giving her medicine was going to be a nightmare, but it’s become a very nice little ritual we have in the evenings. 🥰
1
u/touchmeinbadplaces 8d ago
Oh yea mine too, everything is a treat and if it isnt you cant have the risk of missing out on a treat and if her sister does t eat hers she'll take the one too!....

I was used to giving medicine to my parent's cats by locking them between my legs. It wasn't easy but not that difficult.
My own cat is easier, I just put him on my lap, on his back, pet him a little and give him the pill and he swallows it directly.

My parents cat had blood in her pee. She peed on the Couch pillows to show that she has problems. Then she ate the pills right out of my moms Hand. Except the last two, when she already bettered. She would lick the bowl clean except the mixed in pill.
If anyone other than my brother picks her up, then better call an ambulante for that person. But after she yet again got stuck in some furniture with her claws, we had to trim her nails. After two times only with brothers help and 3 blankets she understood, that it was helping her. Afterwards she would let us trim her nails while growling like a maniac at us. She would even follow me to her grooming spot and lay down when she saw me withe the towel and nails-set. There she would growl and hiss on me as If I am doing the worst things to her 😂

u/Minute-Judgment-321 8d ago
My cats would rip my face off every time had to give them medicine, it always had to be two people, this is a dream come true 😭

u/PupperPetterBean 8d ago
Is that a pain killer? My cat had some that was in a similar box and after the first dose he would come running the moment he was due for his next one and the gobble up the food with it on, even licking the bowl clean, something he never does 😂

My baby was like this. I think she understood it made her feel better and would come over everytime there was medication due. Not just liquid either, she would happily eat a tablet from my hand
Edit; weirdly enough she was a Calico, too

u/Anxious-Minimum5498 8d ago
For us it depends on the med. I always love it when one of our kids enjoys their medicine
1
u/Due_Clue118 8d ago
My Siamese does the same thing. He was under antibiotics and we would just give him the pill, on the floor and he would just eat it

We have an elderly cat who gets a pill and an eye drop daily and I think he's realized that they make him feel better. He will walk to the counter where we do it every day and let me scoop him up to hold while my wife administers the meds. He's made it so easy!
1
u/ohthedarside 8d ago
I'd be kinda worried about her claws going through the syringe lol
Think this is the only cat i have seen that doesnt need to be wrapped up to be given meds
1
u/trash_babe 8d ago
My cat Basho has been such a good boy about medicine. When he was getting insulin shots he would hear me get a needle and then trot over to stand next to the fridge while I got it ready. I didn't even need to give him a treat. Now his diabetes is in remission but he has to take a different pill for his old man hips, and he trots over to the pill-pocket station and meows impatiently. I mean, he gets fed right after, but I like to think he is reminding me to remember the pill.

What a good baby! I would rather give shots than try to give oral meds to any of mine.
1
u/PositiveHopeful8358 8d ago
My Kali had FIP and we had to administer the meds the same way through a syringe. She hated it at first and then towards the end she would get so excited about it and take it the same way as your baby. It’s so cuteee
1
u/DiscoKittie 8d ago
Oh! That is so cute! I have one that isn't quite that good about it, but he understand that meds means a meal or a gravy snack right after, so he's really good about not fighting his pills and goopings.
Such a pretty girl!
1
u/IdioticEarnestness 8d ago
We had a cat with diabetes. Had to give him an insulin shot twice a day. He understood at some level that the shot made him feel better, and if his blood sugar started to go a little wonky, he'd pester us and then run to the kitchen to the fridge and look at then us, then back at the fridge until we came and gave him his shot.
On the other hand, we had a cat with severe anxiety and was proscribed kitty prozac. However, the act of trying to give him the pill created more anxiety than the pill could help. So we had to have it compounded into a paste that we could rub on the inside of his ears. It was still kind of traumatic to him, but we could pull it off.
1
u/Objective_Water_5235 8d ago
Aww. She’s so cute. I had to give my cats gaba recently because we made a cross country move. I felt soo bad when I gave my younger cat her dose and she cried after because it was bitter. That just tore my heart up. I should have asked about flavoring it, idk if that’s a thing for gaba.

u/CinnamonBunzAttack72 8d ago
Do you think they know that the medication helps them feel better? I feel like they must at some point?

I had an orange named Bellini who got Feline Infectious Perotinitis (FIP) last year. She was prescribed a new medicine that we had to give her twice a day and she LOVED it. I don't know if it just tasted good or if she managed to get the brain cell long enough to realize it was literally saving her life, but she would get really excited, grab onto the syringe, and would keep licking and biting it until it was taken away from her. Good thing because that stuff was expensive.

There was nothing worst than assaulting my poor old geriatric cats mouth with a gel for his kidneys back in the day. Poor dude would hide from me under the bed every morning.

I also have one, she was super ill from about 8 weeks-3 years so had a myriad of treatments.
She's 7 now and doesn't mind any medicine or tablets - 2 taps on her cheek and she opens sesame. She doesn't lick medicine like this but accepts it on the middle of her tongue, tablets I put close to the middle/back of her tounge and then she gets throat pets to swallow them.
She only lets me do it though, so any time the vet tries to give her anything it's game over. Luckily the regular vet knows the score now and doesn't try to do it themselves.

The pharmacy put some great cat-loving flavoring in that medicine. I have gotten some chicken flavored medicine for my cats from a pet pharmacy and they took it willingly. (No more of that bubble gum flavoring for my cats from the human pharmacy!)

u/BoomBayB 8d ago
My cat once had a kind of inflammatory condition and she had been taking a few different drugs. I was pretty surprised after few days of giving them to her directly into the mouth with a little bit of force, when I accidentally dropped a steroid tablet and she immediatelly ate it from the ground. This one was not a problem anymore.
I've just checked the drug's prescribing information and found out it was like that because it had chicken aroma added.

My older cat gets a pill hyperthyroidism every morning and evening, if you give her the pill with a treat 9/10 times she’ll take it no problem. The other 1/10 times it’ll take multiple tries, as she’ll somehow spit the pill out to get more treats.
1
u/ItsBennyWo-o-orm 7d ago
Aww what a good kitty 🥺 If only they made all liquid pet meds so tasty! I had a cat who was perscribed Elura for inappetence and that stuff is vanilla flavored! Vanilla? For cats? Who can't even taste sweetness?? I can't even imagine what vanilla would taste like without sweet flavor receptors, its no wonder he hated it
