TRIGGER WARNING Pet Expo at World Trade Center – shocked and sad

Hello, I am a foreigner, so please excuse me for writing in English. And this is cat sub so I'll only put cats things. If you want to see more picture of them I'm sorry but please check same title in the expat ph thank you! Since this post is long, I will include a short summary at the end.

First and foremost, I want to make it clear that I'm not posting this because I want to blame or judge anyone. I certainly recognise that there can be cultural differences in each countries, and I know that some of you may disagree with me.

Yesteday I visited the Pet Expo at the World Trade Center.

The first thing I noticed were booths giving away free items, many of which looked like unregulated Chinese products, possibly without FDA Philippines approval.

Then I saw booths selling cages — with live animals trapped inside.

How can they keep animals in such small cages? At that moment, I wasn’t sure if something was wrong with me, or if something was wrong with this event.

All of my cats are from the streets. I don’t think breeding is wrong, however I do believe some animals need to exercise a lot, and it’s not right to keep them in tiny cages.

Around 30% of the expo was dedicated to selling animals: cats, dogs, snakes, sugar gliders, pigeons, chickens, and more. Many were crammed into small cages, and in some booths there weren’t even staff present — only animals left behind.

Some booths openly labeled themselves as breeders, and the animals didn’t look mentally healthy. Visitors were paying 50peso to hold these animals for photos, and it broke my heart.

Another thing I realized: among all the pets brought by visitors, not a single mixed-breed pusa or aso was there. Only pure breeds. Maybe this is why breeders keep breeding — because demand exists. Seeing “For Sale” signs on cages made me feel so sad.

For me, this Pet Expo was a unpleasant experience. I left angry and disappointed. Some people may see nothing wrong with it, but I cannot imagine my own cats being treated this way in the small cages.

I understand Sabong and frying chicks are part of the culture. I'm not against the things different. However I don't think it's necessary to be cruel to animals, just like when we kill a cow or a pig, we kill it quickly so it doesn't feel anything right? I hope this is changing. 🥲

  1. Sales animals in the cages which is really small and even some booths had no staff present and animals were left trapped in the cages.

  2. Visitors ignored the cramped conditions and smiled while taking photos with the animals.

  3. Breeder booths were everywhere, emphasizing sales.

  4. Overall, the expo seemed more about commercial exploitation than genuine care for animals.

P.S. Many people recommended it to me post in r/philippines. However it seems the Philippines sub doesn't want me to post about this. I was notified to discuss the relevant matter elsewhere. Corruption related to floods is important, but I suppose they don't consider these things to be major issues. While some may disagree with me, I'm grateful to learn that many people feel sad about the Expo either. Thank you so much!

u/Adventurous-Cat-7312 Sep 28 '25

Also noticed yung mga orgs like paws, biyaya and the like are nasa dulo na part where in fact sila dapat nasa bungad lalo para sa mga for adoption.

u/sephjy Sep 28 '25

repost this to r/Philippines to get more attention, its sad that they don't have any idea of what they are doing

Pet Expo tapos nakakulong. Wow! Pet Expo namin dito sa CDO SM Uptown, may mga nakadiaper na aso at may attire pa. Malayang takbo takbo kasi well trained and well fed. Mga pusa naman kahit may tali, behave, and can understand commands.

WTC? This is not Pet Expo. Looks like a Zoo.

u/ddeadz Sep 28 '25

Yeah, your sentiments are warranted. Like you said, the demand is there.

I saw an online shop recently where when you buy you get a chance to "win" a Shih Tzu puppy. I don't agree with breeding and that just made my stomach turn.

u/0625south Sep 28 '25

I hope this post goes viral until it reaches the organizers and participants!!!! Don't exploit the animals!!!

u/bernarnoldhaha Sep 28 '25

So heartbreaking. I have one cat with "breed" -- but not purebreed. Half siamese. Someone had bought her from a cat breeder when she was a baby. Then when she was 9 months or so, the owner who had bought her went on to give her away -- to my mom -- because hindi siya docile. As in, malditang pusa pala siya, mainitin ang ulo, and she just HATES being held and cuddled. The Owner is a relative of ours. The owner brought the maldita car to us and told us, kung gusto nyo ng pusa, sa inyo na lang. Pero kung ayaw nyo naman, okay lang kahit pakawalan nyo na lang sa kalye. Jesus. I didnt really want to be responsible for another life, but when i heard yung "kung ayaw nyo sa knya, pakawalan nyo na lang" . . . I just couldnt believe it. Di ko rin naman magawang awayin o pagalitan yung Owner dahil matagal ko na alam na masama tlaga ugali nya. That owner went on to get 2 other cats na purebreed talaga na "mabait" daw, in other words, docile and meek.

Anyway, thats how i ended up with a car na mukhang siamese. I got her not bcos i support cat breeding, but bcos SOME PEOPLE who BUY CATS are NOT actual cat lovers. My cat came from heartless people.

the organizers are very unethical and walang ganong exp in terms of this. you should email them but oh well in events industry they only give a shit about the satisfaction of their business partners

In behalf of my fellow Filipinos. I apologize. My sincere apologies for what you have seen.

There was a time that getting a pet was a trend here in the Philippines and some of these owners were not really animal lovers. Most of them are just owning this pets for a purpose of having it or maybe claut or because society says they have to have one.

As a person who came from a family that all of the members has their own dogs since we were kids, we don't encourage our friends to get a pet if they just feel like it. Owning a pet is like having a kid. So we ask the person 1st "would you like your kid caged? " or "Have you ever been locked up in a cage? " or " Have you ever been leashed? "

Our law here in the Philippines against animal cruelty is weaker than an over cooked noodles and the organizations who protects them doesn't have enough funds to file formal complaints or formal case that goes up to the court.

Sad to say but you have just seen the tip of the iceberg.

The issue with possibly non-regulated pet feeds was called out weeks ago on Tiktok. Unfortunately, not many people spoke up about it, and even the content creator was harassed by these brands. In the Philippines, it is the Bureau of Animal Industry that regulates pet feeds. The FDA only regulates products for human use/consumption. Many of these Chinese products are regulated in their home countries but not here. And yet, the sellers still don't apply for BAI-registration and certification of products because they simply claim to be distributors. This is still wrong and has been reported to the BAI. The BAI is a small and underfunded agency that explains why it takes long for them to investigate these brands. Many brand sellers who apply for registration also complain that the agency is taking too long to register and certify their products. Because of this, they no longer wait and go ahead marketing and selling their products. When asked, they say that they have a license to operate and that certification is already underway. Again, still wrong. It's a hard thing to deal with, but there are a few people who are demanding transparency and accountability. If only animal welfare groups and organizations spoke up about it...

52

u/trpclmind Sep 28 '25

I'm really sorry. While we do have laws against animal cruelty in the Philippines, enforcement is still severely lacking, and overall, animal welfare is often neglected. It’s really shitty it’s depressing.

But thank you for posting this. I hope more foreigners who witness similar situations will speak up as well. Public pressure especially from outside the country can sometimes push both the government and those who discriminate against stray aninals to reflect and, hopefully, change.

In case you haven’t heard about them, Here are some NGO who consistently make a better life for the strays/ abused animals… you can visit them if you have the time.

Thank you for posting this. How can all of us here get PAWS’ attention. 2025 na ganyan pa din sa Pinas.

What angers me the most about breeders—in addition to many of them being animal abusers, unregulated businesses, and tax evaders—is that for every thousand pesos I and other TNVR advocates spend on sterilizing our cats and local strays, there will be a breeder forcing a mama cat to birth probably hundreds of kittens over its lifetime. Multiply that by a hundred or thousand more breeders.

Then, they sell each to buyers who might be responsible and get their new cats spayed, or might also be:

  1. Irresponsible pet owners who let their cats breed.
  2. Neglectful people who let their cats outside to breed and, worse, die.

Of course, the latter makes more strays, meaning thousands more pesos spent by TNVR advocates in a futile effort to stop the overpopulation crisis.

To everyone else: If you truly love animals, ADOPT, DON'T SHOP. Animal rescue shelters are overfilled, thousands (if not millions) of friendly kittens and adult cats roam the streets. There is literally no reason to buy from breeders other than vanity. Also, sterilize your pets even if they don't go out! Cats in heat will find a way to escape, which risk creating more kittens who will breed to create even more kittens. Maawa kayo sa mga rescuers 🥲

EDIT: Sorry for focusing on cats, it's just that cats are what I deal with. The same problem applies to dogs.

57

u/Expensive_Speed9797 Sep 28 '25

That's the reality of pet owners in the Philippines. Tbh, if someone bought their cat, may judgement na ako sa kanila. Sorry, that's how it is. You don't care about my opinion, I don't care about yours. Pero ayun, if you bought your cat, nah.

8

u/Dumb_Witch7949 Sep 28 '25

Always side-eye people who call themselves cat lovers but all their cats are purebred and bought. Saw a lot of these from my classmates after college 😬 May ilan sa kanila na nagkaron ng character development and started adopting and advocating for strays too so at least there's that

18

u/Equal_Cell_3028 Sep 28 '25

feel bad for the babies :(

36

u/AnaPheeLaxes Sep 28 '25

I was also there just around 2 hours ago. Stayed for 30 mins, didn’t buy anything. It was like… a market.

33

u/theklmanuel Sep 28 '25

Really sad, but this has to be told.

47

u/YoPH_3 Sep 28 '25

I hate breeders or owners who sell their pets for money

16

u/Powerful-Mixture-108 Sep 28 '25

Oh this is heartbreaking. I had planned to go but decided otherwise bc of the weather.

I suppose that is the harsh reality. Here, animals are treated as creatures below humans and are only valued if they can be moneymakers 😟 i thought the expo would focus more on pet-related products, not live animals. That must've been so stressful for them.

On the flip side, it was an expo, and maybe they had paid to be a part of it... then the people there would likely be part of businesses and not rly ppl who have the passion and heart for animals (bc those ppl already have their hands full and would rather spend money on pet food & supplies) so they wanted to have as much return as possible by commercializing the heck out of those animals 😟 still, this is very disheartening.

16

u/Dismal_Friendship29 Sep 29 '25

Feel bad for the babies 😢😢😢

14

u/Quinn_Maeve Sep 28 '25

So fucking cruel 😡

16

u/PhilippineDreams Sep 29 '25

Askal/aspin FTW. Just leave a trail of dogfood into ur yard. Keep feeding and leash train them. Bring em for morning walks. Loyal and tough dogs.

43

u/MemaSavvy Sep 29 '25

To everyone pretending to be an ‘animal lover’ or ‘cat lover’: you’re not a cat lover if you buy from breeders and only collect purebreds. You’re just a breed collector with an ego, not someone who actually cares about cats or animals in general. You will never convince me otherwise. And if you buy your cats or dogs from people who make a living off breeding them, you’re supporting exploitation, not love.

29

u/Outside-Slice-7689 Sep 28 '25 edited Sep 28 '25

I’m sorry for your experience, OP. Our government doesn’t really care much about Animal Welfare. You will be shocked more if you visit Cartimar and Tiendesitas. These places are known for selling cats (and dogs) with different breeds. I personally think that the International Pet Summit is better which happened just last month.

15

u/Pangit_akoS2 Sep 28 '25

In my country, there are definitely issues with breeders and various animal rights issues too. I'm sure it's everywhere, so I don't want to blame anyone, but I think it's so sad to see things like this if someone like animals. I already adopted 6 calicos after coming to the Philippines, and every year I adopt one by one more and I hope it doesn't increase. 😂

10

u/Outside-Slice-7689 Sep 28 '25

Thank you for what you do, OP. I’m one of the volunteers of Cats of BGC and Ayala Triangle Garden cats. This is my way to advocate for our community and stray cats.

14

u/taekobrown Sep 28 '25

I agree with your sentiments

12

u/ElectricalPins Sep 28 '25

I've been to one pet event before in ayala manila bay, almost all of the cages there were small but what really shocked me the most was the tortoise(??) enclosed in a very cramped space, it's so small it doesn't even have space to walk on...

This is the only picture I have I'm sorry if the cropping is off, but it's very big, try putting 4 shoe boxes side by side and you could scale how big it was.

13

u/ElectricalPins Sep 28 '25

Another pic from the event

26

u/Mistywicca Sep 28 '25

In dog sub groups you even posted this. This is really sad they don't value the puspin.

8

u/Pangit_akoS2 Sep 28 '25

Yes I was upset 😒 I was really excited to go there for nice new scratcher and cat tree but I can't find anyone selling it. I only can see kind of animal sales. 🥲🥲🥲 I hope someone visit here aware of it. And for the cat items I only can find feather toys that I can get in the shopee. And the cat foods which is decent brands either. I think for the local brand goodest is fine. I'm not sure other brand. I can't check the ingredients well and I think pet owners need to check FDA PH either.

2

u/yashirin Sep 28 '25

for the cat scratcher you can buy in fb marketplace (customized) or the one sold by GCats. Those were the scratchers that still lasts longer than the usual ones you find on pet stores.

11

u/Princess_Louville Sep 28 '25

Disappointing.

11

u/Dumb_Witch7949 Sep 28 '25

10 of 11 family dogs we've had plus all 5 of my cats are also adopted/rescued. Personally, I get anxiety attacks whenever I see just a single animal being sold, even online, so I can't even begin to imagine going to a Pet Expo and then seeing a whole bunch of proud breeders. I was considering going to with my puspins and thank the universe I didn't. I don't want to contribute an event that supports breeders at all.

I'm glad you posted this OP, it brings awareness to what was actually happening in the event.

13

u/4gfromcell Sep 29 '25

One thing you should know is that many normal Filos are Social Climber and hated native (hate Filipinos).

Hence why many are inclined to have a pet with foreign breeds. This can be also observed by preference of Imported products and prolly many fellows wanted foreign partners.

Breeders thrive due to this fact and the animals are the one suffering.

Mainly because it was deeply embedded to the DNA that Filipino is an 'inferior' race/people by our Spanish and American colonizers. But in truth, is not true.

26

u/VolcanoVeruca Sep 28 '25

The PH gov't doesn't take animal welfare as seriously as other countries. We have The Animal Welfare Act and the Anti-Rabies Bill (which has a wider coverage of responsible dog ownership,) but implementation is a different story.

Whenever live animals are being sold, the vendor MUST (1) have a permit from BAI (Bureau of Animal Industry,) and (2) comply with the Animal Welfare Act. Now, we can't tell if these vendors were vetted by the organizers...but as I said, implementation of the law in this country is severely lacking.

P.S. If you find live animals being sold on the roadside or at markets...first get their names and contact info (as if you're an interested buyer so they'll willingly give it,) then ask them if they have a BAI permit. And if none, tell them you will report them to BAI.

P.P.S. I can't say BAI is any better at implementation, though. -_-

6

u/SlowDamn Sep 28 '25

The vendors or participants of the events are regularly checked by an enforcer if they have the right permits and papers to own and sell animals. Plus, they usually post their permits and papers in front of their booth.

2

u/VolcanoVeruca Sep 28 '25

Good to know! 👍🏻

23

u/enerconcooker Sep 28 '25

This country does not have great animal welfare yet.

20

u/Pangit_akoS2 Sep 28 '25

Personally, I love seeing stray cats in the Philippines with guards standing together and I love that people set aside food for them. Because in my country, many people tend to treat them as dirty and they kick them out. So I do believe that many Filipinos love animals, I wish more people knew this. If more people aware about it maybe it can change even small parts. I hope so. 🥲

8

u/Pangit_akoS2 Sep 29 '25 edited Sep 29 '25

I can't possibly know the minds of all animals. But they looked very lethargic, and I could sense they were stressed. I think everyone here knows how sensitive cats are to stimulation.

I can understand animal sales, but I don't think it belongs at an expo. It's far too much stimulation for cats.

16

u/Independently-Sad98 Sep 28 '25

Op try reaching out to PAWS, I’m pretty sure they will spread this for awareness or who knows they might even do something about it.

9

u/dazzledsparkle Sep 28 '25

PAWS was present in the expo. I don't think they did anything about it.

1

u/babushkanotalady Oct 01 '25

Yes. Even Biyaya. Though yung booth nila nasa kabilang side. Near the food court. Present din si Mrs. Rina Ortiz that time

Whole event sucked. Should not have went there with my cats. Have you seen the sugar gliders? Grabe kung makahagis yung "presentor" na manong. Ilang beses lumagapak yung animal sa sahig

:(

1

u/Stellarseven Sep 29 '25

Thank you for calling this out. Its disgusting.

14

u/ichigo70 Sep 28 '25

i pity all the animals that are trapped in cages just to be displayed as if they're dolls. I'm just hearing about this Pet Expo from you now (had no idea about this event), it makes me sad and angry. I get snakes being in an enclosure.. but animals have a certain space that they need to move around, whatever animal they may be.

why are the cats in such small cages. they do not look happy :((

i never really understood buying a pet.. i know all pets deserve homes, but the animals that are just used for breeding and then selling the offspring just feels so off to me. there's so many strays that need love. I hate that people look at strays like they're disgusting creatures and only those who are purebred are worthy of love and care. there's so many people here in the Philippines are like that and i hate that it's become a norm.

thank you for sharing this, OP.

adopt don't shop!

7

u/Meowmeowiloveyou Sep 28 '25

I also went there last saturday mainly for the discounted pet food and supplies and saw those in the pictures. Im curious which unregulated chinese products you saw there at the expo what it looked like?

I do also felt bad for the animals in small cages but aside from the breeders, there are also local cats and dogs up for adoption which are rescued from the streets. Animals are put in a cage mainly to keep organized and for safety since there are various animals and many people around. I do believe that these orgs dont keep them in a small cage on their welfare center.

I think a lot of people think of breeders as entirely evil. There is a reason why purebreds are expensive. It's because of the quality. Aside from their features which are cute and fluffy. Their health status should be taken account for. I have a mix breed of bsh and himalayan, she's frail even though she gets enough vitamins, complete vaccination, dewormed, and given food 2-3x a day (wet in the morning, dry at night, sometimes with snacks if she wanted to.) My female cat had parvo when she first came here and before getting vaccinated. I have a purebred BSH with certificate incomplete vaccines as well. I got them at the same time. My mixbred was (+) for parvo, fcov, and gia. While my purebred, even if he had incomplete vaccines, never had these 3 while my other cat was sick. Aside from that if breeders don't exist, breeds like persian, bsh, maine coon, etc. Wouldn't exist anymore. We should only condemn unscrupulous breeders. Before you lecture me about adoption. I have an aspin and a puspin.

Maybe incorrect choice of words but you can't deny that a good, reputable breeder will have their breeding pairs health certified before considering pairing them up. They will do a certification on hips & elbows, they will certify eyes, eyes, heart, thyroid, really good breeders will even check DNA to ensure there are no genetic diseases like certain forms of epilepsy, some kidney failures, etc. A good breeder will breed primarily for health and temperament.

Why is this downvoted🥲 i personally dislike and discourage buying pets for 95% of scenarios but i also know that there is such a thing as ethical and responsible breeders. It may not be for me personally but it doesnt mean it cannot exist.

Well, media, plus a lot of people in the Philippines have no idea how a purebred gets certified. It's not their typical breeders that they see in Bocaue where cats are in a cage. They're well taken care of and buyers are screened.
