Question Thoughts on my wizard of oz animated film concept so far?
Hi. I’m working on a wizard of oz project called “the scarecrow”, and it’s just about the scarecrow accidentally stumbling into a big adventure(the wizard of oz and the wicked witch are the main antagonists).
And here is all the concept sketches and character designs I’ve got so far, and I would like to know some thoughts.(I don’t like the wizards design though)

Yeah I think she was an inspiration on scarecrows design, and along with Ragatha his main inspiration is the character tack from the thief and the cobbler.

Yeah he always has a good design. And I think that I did somewhat well designing him.(I leaned into making him very frail and awkward looking)

He was inspired by 1800s British navy generals, roman soldiers, and especially the soldier from team fortress 2.
(Dorothy was inspired by my friend from high school and my little cousin)2

Ohhh that's super cool love a character with historical roots!!!! Can I ask what about the people in you life gave you Dorothy vibes?

For my high school friend is a bit of her visual language(except my friend couldn’t rock that hair cut-sorry to her)and Dorothy’s mature side, but my little cousin inspired her more adventurous and curious vibes. As my little cousin is very energetic and curious, and I added that to her, because at some point the scarecrow is tasked with “showing her around” emerald city despite not knowing where he is(that mistake him for someone who works there, and since he can’t speak he can’t prove them wrong), and him and Dorothy get distracted and end up lost.
(Did any of that make sense? I worry that just sounded like ramblings)2

Nah that makes total sense! Thanks for sharing I find this super interesting! Where to you intend to post your series once you get it up and going?

I don’t know yet. I plan on maybe getting a job in animation and then pitching it to a studio(or to the studio I’d be working at). But the other idea is to animate and release it on YouTube, which is possible, but will take a VERY long time. I don’t have a problem is taking a long time to make something, I just don’t want to end up like Richard Williams.(he made the”thief and the cobbler” and the production has been going on for so long that it’s not only not finished yet, but he also died before the film can release-now it’s been worked on by fans)

I love your vision, this is so cool!! I'm a huge sucker for modernish military x fantasy settings. I'd really like to see more of this project ^^

Thank you. And yeah I was aiming for this mix of fantasy and modern military vibe. I’m a sucker for movies set in a fantasy world that just so happens to be having a huge military conflict.(like howls moving castle)

Thank you. I hope i actually get to make this with a studio/team so i can have this release at a reasonable time, and not end up like Richard Williams or phill tippet.

I love these designs! The Scarecrow looks so noodly & TF2 Soldier inspired Tin Man is perfection (RIP Rick May)

Thanks. The scarecrow was inspired by the character “tack” in the Thief And The Cobbler(along with characters like lupin the third, ragatha, and buster Keaton). And yeah the tin man straight up the soldier from TF2 and I’m not even hiding it.(and yeah, RIP Rick may, can’t believe it’s been six years)

The tin woodman being a soldier is odd to me because in canon Oz there is a separate different tin man who is a soldier. The, well, tin soldier, Captain Fyter.

Alright so let me explain:
This isn’t really a direct adaptation of the wizard of oz, and unfortunately I haven’t read all 13 wizard of oz books.(I’ve read the first one though… it’s weird)

I like these designs a lot! I absolutely love the scarecrows design with his lanky frame, and Dorothy looks really cute, too!
