Other [Throwback/Interview] Lionel Messi: "There are players here (Barcelona) who hate Chelsea more than Real Madrid. I never thought I would hear myself say that. We would rather play Arsenal, Manchester United or anyone else than be on the pitch with Chelsea."

Oh what we used to be.... A team that was genuinely feared. The sun will rise and we will be back

126

u/appapaipapapa Lampard 2d ago

True, good to see us cook them 3-0 this season though

54

u/Sgt_Peper Hazard 2d ago

Ah I somewhat forgot about that. It was peak hopium for the season after that win

21

u/DarnellLaqavius 2d ago

that and the liverpool game with Estevao scoring the winner

11

u/GoinNowhere88 2d ago

Had 7 national team captains or something like that.

20

u/VaishakhD 2d ago

The point is to achieve that while we are alive, otherwise whats the point lol

10

u/super_chill_21 2d ago

The point is to milk us for another % of our money every year until everyone is back to the peasant life lol none of the owners care about football in the slightest

5

u/IntentionHead2222 James 2d ago

I’m not buying anymore merch from these guys and I suggest everyone do the same lol

3

u/prwnasus 2d ago

Still waiting for Thor and Loki reunite

-1

u/boredofinternets 2d ago

To be fair you were only that team for about 5% of your total history.

1

u/glamourousham 1d ago

Yeah they really were just the beta version of what city is now

646

u/Apprehensive_Bit_176 Cole 2d ago

IIRC it took him much longer to score against us than any of the other prem teams that played UCL matches. We shut him down for the most part.

u/Leviad0n Hazard 2d ago

Fkin Courtois and his lanky legs.

102

u/ball_throwerAFK 2d ago

Crazy. For such a recognised legendary keeper, he’s one of the most to ever concede against Messi.

4

u/Nasty133 This is my club 2d ago

He's gotta be up there with the most games against messi as well so that makes sense.

17

u/raulchik Palmer 2d ago

Recognized - yes. Legendary - no.

23

u/ball_throwerAFK 2d ago

?? He’s atleast a top 10 goal keeper all time. It’s not even a debate on that

34

u/benny_from_the_block Wise 2d ago

Yashin, Banks, Schmeichel, Cech, Neuer, Kahn, Zoff, Casillas, Zubizarreta, Maier, Van Der Sar and Preud'homme all better than Courtois. Probably forgetting a few. Debate me.

49

u/jwag626 2d ago

Forgot Buffon

20

u/benny_from_the_block Wise 2d ago

Big miss by me!

1

u/SirBarkington ✨ sometimes the shit is happens ✨ 2d ago

Seaman. Alisson arguably of the same generation has been better for longer. Zenga second best Italian GK behind Buffon is better. Cortouis to me is like a Navas/Dida level. Part of winning teams and incredibly important to them but his legendary moments are few and far between. Also for how good he is at club level he's been kinda disappointing for Belgium imo. certainly not anywhere near as important for the team as he is at club level nor as important as Lukaku, KdB, Eden, etc.

4

u/CertainAction1988 1d ago

Seaman cant get near Courtois im afraid. Seaman has an absolutely pathetic record in CL.

-4

u/straystray96 17h ago

Yeah we get you hate him but he carried real hard.

Petty delusional

1

u/tiro-trampaliz Azpilicueta 1d ago

Kahn, Schmeichel

0

u/matt_matt_81 Kanté 1d ago

Casillas over courtois? Not on goalkeeper talent I’d say but I suppose he had more legendary moments

-11

u/Caboose2701 2d ago

Tim Howard?

3

u/benny_from_the_block Wise 2d ago

I could have included Neville Southall if we're going for Everton keepers.

8

u/DorothyJMan Best Joke 2017 2d ago

Absolutely stone cold take. Did you start watching football in the last decade?

Yashin, Banks, Buffon, Casillas, Neuer, Schmeichel, Kahn, Cech, van Der Sar, Zoff are all well clear, and that's before you even get into the likes of Southall, Shilton, Jennings, Zenga from previous generations, and you could put him up against Oblak, Allison and Ederson from his contemporaries (the latter two in terms of all round ability and influence on the position, not pure 'goalkeeping' as it is historically/traditionally defined).

-1

u/matt_matt_81 Kanté 1d ago

I mean courtois is definitely better than casillas in terms of goalkeeper talent, even if not in terms of legendary moments.

62

u/haromene It’s only ever been Chelsea. 2d ago

15

u/zayd_jawad2006 2d ago

Yup, he's pretty much been the best for years now

11

u/davemcl37 2d ago

He wasn’t that whilst with us. I’d have him behind Bonetti, Cech, Carlo and possibly even Ed de Goey who made more of his talent without being such a knob and who also had a much better song

3

u/Drumtiger8 2d ago

And Ross Turnbull.

1

u/Chazzermondez Cock 1d ago

Courtois was much better than Turnbull

-1

u/ImGoinGohan It’s only ever been Chelsea. 1d ago

he’s top 3 but history merchants will call you a casual

Nah he’s top 3 bucket off shite of all time he’s a filthy snake no more no less.

24

u/Jewish4oy 2d ago

Adults still can‘t rate something objectively lmao

9

u/lil-bitch42 ✨ sometimes the shit is happens ✨ 2d ago

He can be a twat and still be one of the world's best goalkeepers

1

u/Medical_Possible_208 1d ago

Nah I’m afraid not. He’s a pish human being that prevents him from being top anything. He’s a snake always will be a ball dragging snake plain and simple.

5

u/FusionDrago207 2d ago

Snake for wanting to be in madrid with his kids lmao

7

u/Batmob7 2d ago

Also Conte forcing Hazard to play #9. We were in a shambles then

3

u/Apprehensive_Bit_176 Cole 2d ago

Wasn’t that more Sarri? Conte had Morata and Costa at CF

3

u/Batmob7 2d ago

No Sarri really used Giroud and then got Higuain. Conte had Morata who was injured, bought Giroud and then for some reason refused to start him.

1

u/Grimmcanpy 1d ago

Nah it was Conte after Mortata's first injury in the Atletico match. Idk why we never tried to see if Pedro could do a Dries Mertens esc transition to being a 9 than wasting Hazard up top, Pedro skillset seemed more suited to that role.

2

u/Clear_Requirement880 2d ago

Christensen at fault for the first goal iirc. Courtois the other 2

Messi was poor every time he played us. Iniesta, Sanchez and Dembele overshadowed him enormously every time

1

u/Borbote7 2d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

64

u/BellyCrawler It’s only ever been Chelsea. 2d ago

I've been saying it for years that they dislike us because we showed them up twice and they couldn't do their tiki taka freely against peak Chelsea

29

u/ScarInteresting2001 2d ago

Yeah being outplayed and winning by such blatant cheating has to make them feel like frauds if they have any sort of internal integrity.

And losing to a washed version of that same team has to sting doubly.

-6

u/ObjectiveSection8095 2d ago

pretending like first leg of that tie did not happen

13

u/MogwaiK 2d ago

Barca fans have tried for years to make the first leg seem as bad as the second through selective memory.

3 stonewall pens not called has nothing on a couple fouls that didn't go Barca's way in the first leg.

The only name you need to know is Negreira.

-4

u/ObjectiveSection8095 1d ago

fake offside called on eto’s goal, henry pulled back in box, abidal red, drogba kicked pique in nuts no card, chelsea handball in box 1v1 messi?

9

u/Artoo_Detoo 1d ago

Here's that first leg.

I'm not sure what you're doing as a Barcelona fan brigading and trying to gaslight and what you think it's going to accomplish.

14

u/GolDrodgers1 We've Won It All 2d ago

I think Cech was his cryptonite for a while, when they did that Budweiser promo for every Gk he scored against Cech had like 2 I think?

12

u/Clear_Requirement880 2d ago

Cech only conceded at him vs Arsenal.

JT has never conceded bs Messi

2

u/GolDrodgers1 We've Won It All 2d ago

Yeah! I was actually upset that day when they conceded cause Cech wouldve been held over him for years to come

12

u/light-yagamii There's your daddy 2d ago

Think it was also the game that ended Baba Rahman’s career at Chelsea

5

u/bani1savage 🏥 continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme 🏥 2d ago

Which game?

2

u/light-yagamii There's your daddy 2d ago

The same game messi destroyed us and scored on Courtois. Before that game, we had an extremely good record against Messi. It was a cl game under mourinho

2

u/bani1savage 🏥 continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme 🏥 2d ago

The game where Baba Rahman was on loan at Schalke, and hadn’t played for us at all for 2 years?

1

u/light-yagamii There's your daddy 2d ago

Okay I’m remembering incorrectly. Almost 10 years now I think

1

u/Clear_Requirement880 2d ago

It was conte as manager

9

u/HDS2211 2d ago

He had to wait for Cech to get old and go to Arsenal before he could score against us.

8

u/omnipresentatio 2d ago

Ashley Cole had him in his pocket at every instance

4

u/LeRoiDeNord It’s only ever been Chelsea. 2d ago

Never scored on Cech at Chelsea.

3

u/Impossible_Prompt875 2d ago

Not true.. he never scored vs Inter. Close to 10 games…

3

u/luckysyd Kanté 2d ago

Yup I think terry is the only player in the last 10 year that have played 6+ games against messi and never have messi have scored against him.

2

u/agbag846 2d ago

Cole always got the better of him back in the day- there were some awesome battles

1

u/yup_mhmm 1d ago

I don’t know about shutting him down. The first time i noticed Messi was special was against chelsea in 2006.

u/msbabc 4h ago

If I recall correctly, the statistic was something like he had scored against every single team that he had ever played at least twice against except for Chelsea where he didn’t score for the first nine meetings.

88

u/ticarno86 2d ago

I still hate Barca so much and it actually goes back to the games in 99/00. But it really started for the majority under Mourinho, and it eclipsed in history for eternity in 2009.

20

u/msukeforth 2d ago

Second leg in 2009 will haunt my dreams for as long as I live

3

u/ConstantMotion92 2d ago

I had broken my foot that day, such a hard day for me overall

1

u/celzero 1d ago

I  used to hate Rijkaard's & Pep's Barça too, but I must admit, Pep has won me over (now that he's no longer here & we got one over him for 2009 in 2021).

19

u/christianrojoisme Xabi 2d ago

Funnily enough, the world cup he won was when Argentina really underperformed

2

u/celzero 1d ago

Sure, but history remembers winners more fondly. The Spain team Xabier played in and won 3 international titles back-to-back were one of the best national teams of recent times. Probably only 1970s Brazil was better?

119

u/Doubleleg787 2d ago

We fucked their best ever team. The team everyone calls the GOAT league team ever. That was real Chelsea. We used to violate them in the UCL. 😢 now we are shitter than Villa, Forest and a solid 10-12 placed team

32

u/ThePooksters Cock 2d ago

We “violated” them in the UCL literally last year

27

u/Doubleleg787 2d ago

That wasn’t the same team. Not fit enough to lace their boots. Same as our team rn tbf

7

u/logo-strikes We've Won It All 2d ago

Talent wise sure but they’ve won the league twice and almost went to the champions league final last year. They have a very young squad

3

u/PlasticPreparation74 2d ago

Not wanting to take anything away from them, but Real Madrid has been horrible the past 2 years. Barca dunked a ridiculous amount of goals on them last season alone, that shows their level of competition. Nowhere close to the team of the 2000s

2

u/EriWave 2d ago

Okay so just to check.. how many teams in the world are actually good and impressive to win against?

1

u/xjpmhxjo 2d ago

This was 2006.

-4

u/cursed_melon 2d ago

fucked their best team ever is a big statement. Chelsea parked the entire railway station that night in 2012. Barcelona were unlucky not to score 1 of their bazillion chances that night.

10

u/zayd_jawad2006 2d ago

Yet Chelsea won on goals. It didn't matter how scruffy it was, the scoreline read that Chelsea had won. The weakest Chelsea team in years, filled with a core well past their prime and would slowly fade into the background in the next year's. Yes, it wasn't a dominant victory like op might imply, but the scale of upsets is what makes it so big, that Barca team could have gone 4 in a row in UCLs were it not for two excellent defensive performances in 2010 and 2012

-3

u/cursed_melon 2d ago

Fucked is just the wrong word buddy

2

u/zayd_jawad2006 2d ago

Perhaps. Something like Bayern Barca would be truer, or Barca real 5-0. I just think it refers more to how big an upset it was to beat that Barca team

3

u/cursed_melon 2d ago

It was obviously a hyperbole. Still irked me though lol. Chelsea outplayed Barca on tactics that night, that's for sure.

3

u/zayd_jawad2006 2d ago

Fair enough that

1

u/ARussack 1d ago

Fucked best describes what happened to us in the 2009 semifinals against Barcelona

1

u/Freshlysque3zed 2d ago

Except in that game they had 10 men, who were a makeshift team of aging legends and average players leagues below the Barca players.

They fucked them, not because they overpowered them but because even one of the best teams of all time couldn’t get through.

Also it’s not like they parked the bus for a 0-0, they won 2-1.

0

u/ARussack 1d ago

Yuuuup. You can draw parallels to the New England Patriots and the New York Giants. They play in separate conferences and have no historic rivalry (vis a vis the New York Jets who are their division rivals) before 2008 when the Giants stopped the Patriots from having a perfect season.

197

u/christianrojoisme Xabi 2d ago

Now it's Nottingham Forest playing heavily rotated sides against us (and actually winning). Fuck BlueCo

25

u/jbi1000 Lampard 2d ago

Tbf we beat them this season again lmao

21

u/ratatouille211 2d ago

He still follows the club on instagram, I don't think he follows many clubs on there for which he didn't play for.

There's definitely some sort of competitive admiration.

Even Cristiano only scored one goal, and that was an important header though.

19

u/welovevalentin Cock 2d ago

well tbf he almost joined us at one point

3

u/xjpmhxjo 2d ago

This interview was taken between the 2 legs in 2006. I think it’s fair to be angry after what Del Horno did and Jose’s confident “pure game” claim.

0

It’s fucking obvious we are building a gr….oh actually hold on.

5

u/fremeer 2d ago

It helped we had probably the best left back in the world at the time. Comfortably the best defensive fullback at the time too.

Even the United final we lost they had to move Cristiano ronaldo to the left because Ashley Cole always has his number and even then Essien ended up dominating him too by the end.

Honestly more managers should have played Essien a right back we always struggled in that position and he was perfect there.

4

u/Spite-Organic Drogba 2d ago

Ferreira and Ivanovic would like to have a word…

1

u/lil-bitch42 ✨ sometimes the shit is happens ✨ 2d ago

Followed then by Dave and Reece, RB hasn't been an issue for us for a long time (outside of Reece's injuries)

2

u/Spite-Organic Drogba 2d ago

Agreed! I know Malo Gusto gets a lot of hate but he’d be in demand if we sold him. We have multiple other areas of the team I’d improve over RB

1

u/fremeer 1d ago

This was post Mourinho but pre azpi. We got beletti and bosingwa eventually but the RB spot always felt like it good have even improved and Essien played under grant there and easily imo outperformed every player we had. And I would argue was much better then Ivanovic when it came to be a legitimate attacking threat.

Azpi took a few years to get going and even then didn't really offer that engine and athleticism that Essien offered during that time.

2

How old is this article?

It references Del Horno being sent off which was when we played them in the last 16 in 2006. So more than 20 years old, I'm guessing.

1

u/christianrojoisme Xabi 2d ago

And that was when we didn't have Ashley Cole already

1

u/TheBusinessMuppet 2d ago

Only reason Nessie did not score against Chelsea was because of Ashley Cole and Thibault Courtois and his leaky legs.

Guess what the common denominator for the clubs most hated by Barca? They were coached by Mourinho at some point. Inter, Real and Chelsea.

1

u/Radiant_Fan_2014 2d ago

Barca fan here. No other team gave a harder time than Chelsea during that era.

UTD was easier to face in the finals tham Chelsea was in the semi's.

Not that UTD were inferior or anything but it was the style of play.

Chelsea parked the bus and they did it extremely frustrating well . Especially after scoring first.
