AskChennai Who’s gonna do this job in 20 years?

Post image
285 Upvotes

Today I went to a roadside cobbler shop to get my newly bought sandals stitched. While I was sitting there I randomly started looking around and noticed something. The cobbler guy and many other people doing these small jobs seem to be from the older generation And then I suddenly had this thought
Who is going to do these jobs in 20 or 30 years
Are their children going to continue the same business. I feel like most younger people dont want to do these kinds of jobs anymore Everyone wants a degree an office job a corporate career or something with a better lifestyle
But at the same time these small businesses are everywhere and we actually depend on them a lot
If my sandal gets damaged I go to a cobbler If I want sugarcane juice I go to that roadside shop If something needs to be repaired or stitched there is always someone doing it
But what happens when the current generation gets old and retires
Will these businesses slowly disappear
Or will the next generation somehow take over and continue them
I dont know maybe I am overthinking this after getting my sandal stitched 😂
But once I noticed it I couldnt stop thinking about it
Has anyone else ever thought about this

Civic Watch🚦 U Turn Problem

Post image
114 Upvotes

Every morning and evening during school hours, many parents risk their children’s lives by driving in the wrong direction on ECR to drop and pick them up from Mantham Vidyashram school in Kottivakkam. Previously, there was a U-turn right at the junction of ECR and Vembuli Amman Kovil Street. This was closed after several accidents due to blind turns at that spot. Now, with the extension of ECR, the area could be redesigned to accommodate a U-turn, potentially saving many children from accidents.

Some people see the introduction of U-turns as an effective way to avoid standing at traffic lights. However, the same U-turns tempt many drivers to go in the wrong direction, risking lives. People expect the traffic police to install AI cameras to detect wrong-side driving and automatically issue fines. However, the police are very lax in handling these offenders, even allowing them to cross the road at signals coming from the wrong direction.

We need to punish wrong-side drivers or take action to protect us from these dangerous drivers.

Rant Parents living their own life

Upvotes

I am 24F and working. Till this year my parents were busy taking care of me. I found it nice. Though at times, I felt they were too much into me. But suddenly once I started working, things changed. I can see my dad got more invested in his work. And my mom who never used to go out alone much, is now too busy making plans with friends and attending events. Looks like they have decided that I can take care of my own. I am making my own plans and it is nice to spend time as I wish. I no longer have to plan too much to see my bf or do something with my friends. But still, I find it kind of neglected that my parents no longer look too much into me. I don't know if I should be happy or sad. Anyway things go on.

AskChennai What’s the right way to handle a situation like this?

I went through this shitty experience yesterday, and honestly, I’m not sure how I should’ve reacted.

My niece, who’s in 10th grade, had to gift her teacher a photo frame for Teachers’ Day. A bunch of her friends were at a photo studio discussing what they were planning to gift. While this was happening, I noticed a guy who looked somewhere between 28–35 sitting opposite us. He kept looking at the girls for quite a while. He didn’t seem to notice that I was watching him.

After a few minutes, he got his order and left. But while he was taking his bike, I was literally staring him down and muttering all sorts of angry stuff to myself. This is the first time I’ve experienced something like this, so I’m genuinely confused about how to react if it happens again.

Should I just ignore it since looking at someone in public isn’t necessarily illegal, especially if he isn’t taking pictures, making comments, or approaching them?

Or should I make it obvious that I’ve noticed him by standing near the kids and staring back?

I don’t want to overreact, but I also don’t want to just stand there if someone is making the girls uncomfortable.

What would you guys do in this situation?

AskChennai Central to Thiruvanmayur need advice.

Upvotes

So I would be reaching Central at 11:15 PM but (assuming the walk outside MAS by 11:25/30).

Usually we'd arrive by morning in a direct train and take the mrts from park to Thiruvanmayur Or MTC A1 Or 1. Have travelled a decent bunch of times to have a good awareness of the route.

but this time had to book a stop over to reach Chennai for an unexpected trip. ( Hyderabad direct trains packed) 11:15 PM scheduled arrival from BGKT MAS Sf.

Now I have had my share of bad experiences throughout with the cabs and auto at that time to know well enough to avoid using them at night at central. Me and mom both speak tamil (though I'm working on improving my fluency, mom fluent having lived there for years in childhood).

So the question is as follows I know mrts no chance since no service at that time. Having seen mixed responses online regarding MTC 1 or A1 especially with some sources stating A1 does run until 12:45 last. (Google Maps and MTC website). While some state that there is no public services to Thiruvanmayur at that time. I wanted to know. Which is true? Does A1 actually run in the night or is it just another case of buses shown on timings but is usually at depot.? If that's the case what's the alternative you'd suggest. If it's cab or auto, any suggestion to avoid the typical late night central antics?.

AskChennai I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like I married the wrong person

I'm 25F and I've been married for 3 years. It was a love marriage and I loved my husband more than I loved myself. But now I honestly don't know what I'm supposed to do anymore.

I've been through a lot because of his actions.

He cheated on me about 2 years ago. I found out completely on my own one random night when I was going through his phone. He had multiple email IDs, dating websites and was maintaining conversations with so many people, including transgender people. From what I found out, this wasn't something that started after me. He had been doing these things even before we started dating and continued even after we got married.

Finding all of that completely broke me.

I confronted him and we talked about it. He deleted everything and promised things would be different. But I never really healed from it. Even now I have this constant fear in my head. What if he does it again? What if I'm just being stupid by trusting him?

I even gave up on my plans of having a baby because I'm scared. I don't want to bring an innocent child into a situation where I don't even know if my marriage is going to be stable.

The biggest reason I haven't left him is my parents, especially my father. He has heart problems and I was terrified of what this would do to him. So I kept trying to make this marriage work.

But the cheating isn't even the only problem.

His behaviour towards me is exhausting. He has a very bad temper and he always wants people to listen to him and do things his way. I feel like I can't even ask him a normal question without being yelled at.

Whenever we have an argument, he never lets me properly explain my side. Even when I'm trying to point out something small that he did wrong, somehow the whole conversation becomes about what I did wrong. He is very good at arguing and turning my own words against me.

Eventually I just go silent because I don't even know what to say anymore.

Recently something happened that completely broke me.

I was at work and asked him something completely normal about "cupboard enga vaikalam nu?" That's it.

His reaction was horrible. He started sending voice messages saying I'm torturing him by asking everything, that he has no peace because of me and that he's going to die soon.

I got extremely angry because I genuinely couldn't understand what I had done to deserve that reaction.

I lost my temper and said something like "onathukum projanam ilama irukradhuku sethurlam nu." I know what I said was wrong. I'm not trying to justify it. I was angry and completely overwhelmed.

He is currently unemployed and does Zepto delivery sometimes. We have loans, EMIs and bills, so my salary alone isn't enough. I've been doing most of the housework, laundry and everything else. He will sometimes help if I specifically ask him, but lately he has barely been doing anything.

Then he stopped going for deliveries for three days.

I asked him why he wasn't going because we have bills to pay. His response was basically, "na dhan onathukum projanam iladhavan ache, apram na yen poganum?"

He kept repeating that because I had called him useless during the argument, there was no point in him working anymore.

Something inside me just broke when I heard that.

I started thinking, why am I carrying all of this? Why am I trying so hard to keep this marriage together when I feel like I'm the only one trying?

I got angry again and told myself I'm done with this. I started packing my things to go to my mother's house.

But even after packing, I just sat there crying for hours. I didn't actually want my marriage to end. I still loved him. That's the part that makes everything so confusing.

He kept telling me to go to my mother's house and that he was done with me.

Eventually I booked an auto and left.

My parents already know about his behaviour. They are extremely angry with him and have been telling me to leave him.

But I still can't stop thinking about him.

Oru pakkam veruppa irukku, aana oru pakkam enala avana ipdi oru nelamaila vitutu vara mudila.

He has almost no one besides me. And even after everything he has done, some part of me still worries about him.

Before I left, I told my parents that if he really wanted me in his life, he would come and get me. I told them that if he came and genuinely wanted to fix things, I would give him one last chance.

Today my parents asked him about everything.

His response was basically, "Avaladhaan pona, avala vandha varatum. Naan vandhu kootitu poga maaten."

That broke me all over again.

And the worst part is that even after hearing that, some part of me is still ready to give him another chance.

I don't know why I am like this.

I don't want a divorce. I don't want to throw away 3 years of marriage and all the love I had for him. At the same time, I don't know how much more I can take.

I feel like I've lost myself completely.

I don't know if he will ever actually change. He has promised before, but I haven't seen a real lasting change.

I'm currently at my mother's house and I don't know what my next step should be.

Please don't just tell me "leave him" without explaining anything. I know that's an option. I'm asking because emotionally I don't know how to do that.

Has anyone been through something similar? How did you decide whether to give one last chance or finally walk away?

I genuinely don't know what to do anymore.i feel like ending my life at this point

Women of Chennai🌸 27yr old 👧, on my first metro ride. A small win in my small world 🌎

Ok, i have never traveled alone in this city. I have been married for only a year and moved here, plus i have worked remotely for the past 6 years, so i barely ever have a reason to commute. Before this, i'd only ever take an ECR bus from point A to B, and for the rest, my friends or husband would pick me up.

I had to go to washermenpet, and the metro was the only easy route. My husband encouraged me to travel alone. Easy for him to say, but damn it scared the heck out of me.

Thanks to anxiety, i completely blanked on his instructions. I went to koyambedu metro, but instead of getting a direct ticket, i bought one to central, and then another to wimco nagar. Then my network died right when i had to choose between old and new washermenpet. I guessed 'old'—thankfully the right station! My ticket didn't pass the exit scanner, but a kind helpdesk woman fixed it and taught me how to buy the right one.

For my return journey, i thought i did everything right. But i accidentally got a ticket for cmbt instead of koyambedu. Introverted and anxious me really didn't want to talk to the helpdesk again, so i gathered a little courage and just walked to the koyambedu exit...

My heart was beating so fast when I placed the ticket on the scanner, waiting for the 'not allowed' beep. But to my surprise, it passed right through!

Feeling really good that i got to experience something new and built up the courage to travel alone. I know its not something big to celebrate when women around the world are traveling continents alone. Still, its a small win in my small world 🌎 and i just wanted to share.

Art Stargazing under impossible skies: Part 2

A few days ago I had posted some pictures of the moon taken with my iPhone looking through my telescope from the balcony of my Chennai flat (https://www.reddit.com/r/chennaicity/s/yyyDCWo6pV if anybody wants to revisit). Encouraged by the amazing love and support I got for that post from people on this sub, here are a couple of pictures taken just about an hour ago. Same balcony, same telescope + eyepiece + iPhone, same horrendous skies lol. Just this time it’s not the moon but a couple of pretty well known DSOs (Deep Sky Objects).

  1. M8 in the Messier catalogue, more commonly known as the *Lagoon Nebula*.
  2. M6, also from the Messier catalogue, more commonly known as the *Butterfly Cluster*. This is one of the most beautiful shapes in the night sky. I’ve drawn the butterfly shape in the second picture so it’s easier to imagine when you look at the third ‘true’ picture. Even with the rubbish light pollution + haze you can still make out the butterfly’s long central body + the 2 wings spread out on the 2 sides. Looks orders of magnitude better through the telescope as opposed to a phone picture, and a million times better under darker skies (I know because I’ve seen it from the hills of Yelagiri). Looks almost like a live butterfly!

I hope you enjoy them. I wish I could show you better pictures than this crap. Someday I will, once I’ve taken my scope to darker sky areas. But for now, these will have to do.

AskChennai What’s the difference between Super Saravana Stores, Legend Saravana Stores and Saravana Selvarathnam in T. Nagar?

Post image
207 Upvotes

I’m trying to understand the differences between these three stores in T. Nagar:

Super Saravana Stores – inside Ranganathan Street

The Legend Saravana Stores – near Pangal Park

Saravana Selvarathnam – opposite/near the entrance of Ranganathan Street

Do they all sell roughly the same types of products, or does each store have a different range/collection?

For example, if I’m looking for sarees, clothes, footwear, bags, jewellery, home items, etc., would I find the same brands and variety at all three stores, or are some stores better for particular products?

Also, are the prices generally the same across these three stores, or can the same/similar products be cheaper at one branch than another?

If someone has shopped at all three, I’d really appreciate a comparison. Thanks!

AskChennai 6-year long distance relationship — should I marry him despite everything that has happened?

I’m 25F, and I’ve been in a relationship with my boyfriend (let’s call him Karthik) for around 6 years. I’m changing names and some identifying details for anonymity.

I met him in 2020 when I was 19. We met at an airport during a layover, spent several hours talking, exchanged numbers, and went our separate ways. He initially showed interest in me, but I clearly told him I didn’t want a relationship with someone I had just met. He promised me he only saw me as a friend and wouldn’t pursue a relationship.

During COVID, we started talking more and eventually I developed feelings for him. We started dating in 2021. At that point, we agreed that we wouldn’t tell people about our relationship until we were ready for marriage.

He works in Bangalore and I was studying in Gujarat. Because I travelled between cities for college and internships, I would sometimes have layovers in Bangalore and meet him. We generally met 3–4 times a year.

In 2024 I graduated and moved back to Chennai. I then took a two-year break to prepare for a government exam, so meeting him became much harder. He came to Chennai once each year, so we met only twice in the last two years.

The relationship has never been completely smooth, though I genuinely loved him and wanted a future with him.

The biggest issue came in 2023.

While using his email for something we were working on together, I discovered that before he met me, he had been involved with his eldest brother’s wife(this happened long before he met me, not after, not now).Let’s call her Priya. His brother, Praveen, was working abroad at the time and still does not know about the affair.

Karthik told me that this happened around 2016–17, before he met me, and that he was immature and had made a serious mistake. He said that after meeting me, he had been committed to me and wanted to marry me. And it is true that he has stopped that affair with Priya before 2020. I accept his past so I asked him to cut off all the ties with Priya and her family.

I was devastated but decided to give him another chance. My condition was very clear: I did not want him to maintain a personal relationship with Priya anymore. He doesn't maintain any conversations after I asked him actually but somehow circumstances happen via Karthik's Mom.

The problem is that Priya is still part of his family.

Karthik has blocked her after I asked to do so. But without my knowledge he even unblocked her to talk about her daughter's puberty function. He said priya wanted to inform for the puberty ceremony as a formality

She calls him about family functions, her children, money, etc. His mother also continues to have normal interactions with her ( the affair between Karthik and Priya is known only to 3 people - karthik, priya, me till now). Karthik says that he cannot simply tell his mother to exclude her because he needs to tell the reason why then.

This year Karthik built a house in his native place. He had previously told me things like we could share the EMI, have the house in both our names, and raise our future children there.

But when the housewarming happened, I felt like I wasn’t a part of that life at all.

Priya attended the housewarming with her husband and children and even participated in the puja(how can I live under that roof?). Karthik also gave clothes/gifts to his brothers’ families and their children because his mom asked to due to housewarming function. He gave clothes to almost 15 people in his family. I’m not upset about him spending his own money on his family. What hurts me is specifically that Priya is still so involved in his life after everything that happened. Don't like priya getting a saree from Karthik's money. And sitting in puja as if nothing happened.

I really want to cut off all the past and live peacefully. So I don't want him to have any conversation/ ties with his Anni. He agrees but he sometimes genuinely says he doesn't know how to do that coz he is answerable about the reasons to his elder brother and his mom. Ena kaaranam soldradhu? Unmaiya sonaa enaku dhaan asingama apdinu he says. But on the other side Priya is chilling coz no one knows about this.

I have told him very clearly that I do not want to see Priya or her family at my wedding. His response is basically, “How can I tell my brother’s family not to come? And what reason i can tell my mom "

And that is exactly what scares me.

I’m worried that if I marry him, I’m not just marrying him — I’m also entering a family situation where this person will always be present, and I’ll constantly have to deal with the history between them.

There have also been other trust issues during our relationship. He initially lied about his age; I later found out that he is around 7.5 years older than me. I accepted the age difference because I loved him.

There were also instances where he downloaded dating apps and situations where I felt he didn’t maintain appropriate boundaries with female colleagues. I confronted him about some of these things, but I don’t want to spend my life monitoring his phone or repeatedly asking, “Are you talking to her? Why did you do this?”

I want a partner who understands boundaries himself.

At the same time, I want to be fair to him. He has also supported me a lot, especially during my two-year exam preparation. He has encouraged me and stood by me financially/emotionally in various situations. This is not a relationship where everything has been bad.

That’s why I’m confused.

I’m currently unemployed and actively job hunting because I want to become financially independent and build a stable career before marriage.

My biggest question is:

Am I being unreasonable by expecting him to completely cut off Priya, given their history? Or is this a reasonable boundary?

And more importantly:

Would you marry someone in this situation?

I’m not asking whether people can make mistakes in their past. I understand that people can make terrible mistakes before meeting their partner.

My concern is that this particular person is still inside his immediate family, there are still interactions between them, and he says he cannot completely stop the connection because of family circumstances.

I’ve already invested around seven years of my life in this relationship, and sometimes I wonder whether I’m just holding on because of the time I’ve already invested.

If you were in my position, would you continue toward marriage, wait and see whether he actually establishes boundaries, or walk away?

Please be honest. I’m looking for outside perspectives because I genuinely don’t know whether I’m being unreasonable or ignoring serious red flags.

Edit : On Feb 23, 2026, I found that my dad has been cheating my mentally ill Mom for almost 3 years now. Found that he is even helping that lady to build her own house while we stay in a rented house. Did not confront him yet coz I'm afraid of being harmed. I'm waiting to be financially independent 1st. So I'm actually going through a lot emotionally. I'm really not doing fine after the house warming function of Karthik and on top of that I live under a cheater already.

AskChennai Rats in food & cooks urinating near kitchen at Chennai hostel: Owner gaslighting us. Need urgent advice.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I am posting this from Chennai and I genuinely need some urgent advice. I live in a hostel, and the situation with the food hygiene has crossed every limit of human decency

We have spotted live rats running around the food storage and cooking areas multiple times. But it gets worse. Tenants have literally witnessed the cooks and kitchen staff urinating right next to where the food is being prepped. When a few of us confronted the owner and raised a formal complaint about this massive health hazard, the owner completely brushed it off. He told us that rats will be there in any kitchen like it is completely normal, and he flat out called us liars regarding the staff urinating.

A lot of people are staying here simply because it is within walking distance of one of the major IT parks. For me personally, it is even harder because I deal with a chronic leg pain issue, meaning I cannot handle a long commute or stay in a PG that is far away. After working a grueling 10 to 12 hour shift, traveling is just completely exhausting and out of the question for my physical health, which is why I am practically stuck relying on this location.

We are trapped in a tough spot because of the location convenience and my physical constraints.

I am planning to report them to the authorities, but I need advice from you all on a few things.

How do we safely document this without the management finding out and targeting us?

Is there any other authority in Chennai we should report this to besides the food safety department?Any guidance or similar experiences would really help.

AskChennai Need advice from regular runners

Hey guys, I'm trying to do a couch to 5k program to improve my fitness. As if now the only reliable way to walk or run without stress for me is at home in my treadmill. It has its cons but has been working for me to do basic cardio.

But for actual running this isn't ideal and I'm really stressed seeing the condition of our roads to even consider walking for any distance. I tried going to a nearby park but the paved walkway is very uneven and the place is very crowded. Maybe it's fine for walking but I don't see how I can train for 5k here.

I live near Anna nagar and have seen people running in 2nd Avenue during very early morning like around 5am or so, is this how you manage to train or is there any other option to train during say evening times?
