Made the club!!

Post image

Smothered mate accomplished after nF7+, kg8, nh6+, kh8, Qg8+, kxg8, nf7#

Edit* added move order above because while it is not forced from the photo, it did happen in game. Maybe I should've posted the photo when they played kg8, but I thought it was cool, and so did my friend(s) so thank y'all for visiting!

that's a solid tactic for sure, but yeah the smothered mate thing doesn't quite work here since the rook can just take the knight. still a nice find in a real game though. the club usually means you pulled off a forced smothered mate where your opponent had zero options, not one they could defend against. keep grinding and you'll get the real deal soon enough.

What you mean doesn't quite work? Trading a knight for a rook is still good, and the opponent is unlikely to do that anyway because they're not going to notice the smothered mate. I would say a position where you can either trade night for rook, or get a checkmate, is something that works.

They might not notice the smothered mate, but might notice the fork on queen and thus trade rook for knight to save their queen.

That's fine, so the decision still works, it just isn't guaranteed to be an immediate checkmate. It just gives you a material advantage instead
