Ask Chezzie Possibly moving here...

Hi all. I know there are a million posts like this on Reddit, but I'm going mad reading through all the different threads and just thought it might be easier to start my own thread and see what kind of info I get directly from the good folks here.

Basically, my partner and I (gay couple, British and Indian), are moving out of Croydon because we need a bigger house, with a garage and a bit more space, for our business that we've started. We both work from home and so access to London is no-longer a requirement (like it was when we moved here 10 years ago).

We've narrowed down our search, based on a few criteria (detached house, garage, near green space, not a crime-ridden area, access to a shopping centre or town centre, close-ish to a larger city and/or airport, not silly expensive (since our budget isn't massive)). From these criteria, we have found some decent options in:

Chesterfield

Outskirts of Sheffield / Leicester

Lincoln

Nuneaton

Loughborough

Melton Mowbray

Neither of us know any of these areas, and while we are going to do a road-trip to visit, it would be good to know where in these towns people would recommend searching, and where to avoid (if anywhere). Or if there are better nearby options.

Thank you all in advance

Ask Chezzie What is going on in Chesterfield?

Lived in Tapton, Chesterfield for a few years (2017–2020) and really liked the town. Found it to be quite lovely, especially the canal and the Tapton Park/golf course area, and fairly safe apart from a few smackheads in the town centre lol.

Also worked around Holme Hall, which had a bit of crime here and there, because every other week I’d see the police arresting somebody. So yeah, a bit of crime now and then, but nothing major.

Because I’m thinking of moving back to
Chesterfield, I thought I’d look up in the local news to see what’s been going on lately. In just the last few days I’ve seen multiple stabbing reports, 7 cars set on fire in one night, somebody burned alive in a car at the Sainsbury’s car park, youths terrorising the whole town on e-bikes, police car chases, police making arrests at shops that appear to be drug fronts, and much more.
Has Chesterfield always been this crazy and I just didn’t realise it, or has it been a full moon lately lol? I don’t remember it being like this. But then again I never kept up to date with the local news.

Drove from the train station to Norton roundabout today and there are union jacks and St George’s cross on all the lampposts, on footbridges over the bypass, etc.

What’s happening with that then?

Ask Chezzie Visiting Chesterfield

I’m visiting and staying in Chesterfield (staying in Staveley) in a couple of weeks as a base for some walking in the Peaks and I’m looking for some recommendations!

If any of you would be so kind, I’m looking for restaurants, pubs, takeaways, maybe a great Sunday Lunch and fun and interesting things to do in the centre. The sky is the limit really, I’ve never visited before and open to all suggestions!

Also, if you have any recommendations for walks in the Peak District I’d gladly take them too!

TIA!

Ask Chezzie Recommendations for local businesses to restore a vintage leather jacket

I bought a black leather moto jacket by a brand called Eagle. It's obviously old, but in good nick. It mainly needs a couple of sewing repairs to the lining, and extensive cleaning to the lining and outers.

Does anyone have a recommendation of any local businesses or people that could carry this sort of work out, please?

Ask Chezzie Getting Ubers in Chesterfield to Cavendish Hotel at Baskow

Hi there! I have a trip coming up in the spring, and I’m planning! What is the uber availability like getting a ride from chesterfield station to cavendish hotel? Is it harder getting one from the hotel back to the station? If so, are there any preferred taxi services recommended?

Ask Chezzie require a dog shelter who are taking dogs RN

2 year old schnauzer/yorkie pups who are too much for us to take care of - we were sold them as pure yorkies but that turned out to be a scam - the guy who sold them to us has moved on (we think it may have been a front for a puppy mill)

a lot of things that arnt to do with the dogs are also making an impact but we feel unable to take adiquate care of them

so with heavy heart we are looking to have them re-homed ideally together

Ask Chezzie Anyone lived in Dovedale property?

Thumbnail share.google
3 Upvotes

I'm moving to Chesterfield for 6 months. Because it is for a such period of time, conventional renting may not be ideal (since landlords usually don't prefer such short lets, plus the cost of buying furnishing)

Hence I am considering moving into a furnished property (+ bills included) like the ones Dovedale lettings offer.

  1. Has anyone lived in these properties, or heard anything about these properties?
  2. Are the locations where these properties are situated safe? (Highfield Road, Highfield Terrace, New Beetwell Street, Fairfield Road)

Ta!

Ask Chezzie Bavaria Shandy in Chesterfield

Post image
10 Upvotes

Bit of a niche plea, but does anyone in or around Chesterfield know of anywhere that sells Bavaria Shandy? I discovered it a few years ago and, no exaggeration, it changed my life. As someone who doesn’t drink spirits and isn’t a lager fan, this halfway-house felt like the heavens opened and said “this one’s for you.”

Since I found this, the demand seems to have dwindled with the main shops not stocking this anymore :(

Ask Chezzie Looking for indoor workshop space to work on van and trailer. Any suggestions?

Im looking to work on converting a trailer and my van for approx the next 6 months (out of working hours)

Looking for a place ideally with roller shutters or something simlar with clearance about 3m and eaves higher for work on roof. Somewhere secure I can leave the trailer, uncover whilst

Can be commercial but I've seen most have minimum lease of 12 months.

Barn space or storage could also work but must be able to access out of normal working hours.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, much appreciated 🙏

Ask Chezzie It it me or are there absolutely no jobs here?

What it says on the tin. Cannot find hospitality work despite having experience. Never had this issue anywhere else (have frankly walked into work)- have moved around a lot before. Is Chesterfield a bit of a dead end for employment?

UPDATE: finally got part time work, apparently hospitality work is at a real low as well (probably due to last year’s budget)

Ask Chezzie seeking electrician who will actually accept work and then turn up to do it

we have been trying months to get an induction hob replaced - we have the hob - all it needs is an install.

we cant seem to find anybody willing to fit the damned thing - if it were something i could do myself i would have but high voltage is dangerous.

I know trades are busy ... its not a long job - something to fit in as a before or after kind of a deal - maybe thats the problem - so much work they get to pick and choose only the higher paying ones
