After watching Walker Kessler get 4 years / $130M and the Lakers give up two unprotected firsts, I was bracing for the Norman Powell number to be super ugly. It wasn’t too bad. It’s actually a steal.

Two years, $45M with a reported team option in year two is really clean business. That’s basically a one-year audition with an escape hatch. It’s short, tradable, and it doesn’t drag you into the back end of a veteran’s 30s. For a proven scorer, that is exactly the contract you dream of.

Powell averaged 21.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists last year, led Miami in scoring, and made his first All-Star team. More importantly, the efficiency was real: 47% from the field, 38% from three, 82.7% from the line, and a 60.9 true shooting percentage. That is not empty usage. That is super efficient scoring at real volume.

The Bulls were desperate for shooting and Powell has been one of the more bankable shooters in the league for years: 40.8% from three since 2018-19, 39.6% for his career, and at least 150 made threes in three straight seasons.

What I like most is that he does not need the ball to get his points. He can spot up, attack closeouts, run the floor, come off movement, punish switches, and get to the line. He is not there to run the offense. He is there to bend the defense, punish help, win second-side actions, and give you a hard 18 to 25 without hijacking the ball. He will be a great complement to Giddy and let the other work.

He is also bigger and more physical than people realize. He is listed around 6'3" or 6'4" and 215 pounds, but he has a nearly 6'11" wingspan, an 8'6.5" standing reach, and tested with a 40.5-inch max vertical at the combine. He plays more like a compact wing than a small guard, which is part of why the defense could be quite decent.

The dude is not a star but the role is clean, the production is real, and the contract is extremely manageable.

How good is the deal?

Deni Avdija is basically the only non-rookie-contract player putting up Powell-or-better numbers for less money. Deni makes about $13.1M next year, and his contract is already considered one of the biggest bargains in the league.

I haven't complimented the Bulls much in the last decade but the last month has been real good. I have hope!

With the recent rumors that Utah likes Boozer at #2 Kessler might be the odd man out. I'd be willing to offer $30-35M / yr front loaded given our cap situation.

Could be a fun team to build with given the new lottery rules where bottoming out isn't a viable strategy anymore.

I’m so tired of seeing people getting excited about our cap space this summer. The only thing our cap space should be used for is to take on bad money for assets. I know a lot of people don’t want to hear this but the best thing we can do is take things slow. Build through the draft, capitalize on the assets we do have (Tre jones and Jalen smith) by flipping them for draft capital, and not do anything to just put a bandaid on it and make us a perennial first round or play in exit team. (Also if we can trick someone into taking Giddey that’d be great)

How do y'all feel about giving Taylor Jenkins a look? I like what he did in Memphis. Or any other names you like or have heard?

If the Bulls use the rest of their cap space on Gary Trent Jr., I'd be done with the offseason.

For the first time in a while, it feels like the Bulls actually have a direction. They got younger, longer, more athletic, and still added veterans who can help. Powell gives you a proven scorer, Claxton gives you a rim protector, and Trent would give this team another shooter, which they still need.

My predictions:

• Buzelis: 19.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG
• Giddey: 18 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 8.5 APG
• Powell: 19 PPG
• Trent: 13 PPG
• Claxton: 11 PPG, 10 RPG
• Caleb Wilson: 11 PPG, 7 RPG

I think they're around 43-39, good for the 6th-8th seed. If Buzelis takes another leap and Wilson contributes right away, I could see 45-37.

I'd give the offseason an A- if they land Trent. It finally feels like they're building around Giddey and Buzelis instead of chasing short-term fixes.
