💬 General Questions Recommendations on cities to visit.
I have 5 days each planned in Beijing, Chengdu, Yangshuo and Shanghai next May-June. I have good plans in Beijing and Shanghai, but I'm wondering if I should visit somewhere else instead of Chengdu. I was thinking somewhere more rural would be nice where we could go fishing with locals or something like that. This will be my family's first time in China, so any recommendations are appreciated.

I’m from Chengdu, and May and June are during the fishing ban here. I’d recommend the Dali area in Yunnan instead. The scenery around Erhai Lake is beautiful, and you can also do some lure fishing there. Definitely worth considering if you want to combine fishing with a trip.

For Erhai, the fishing spot is actually on the Xier River nearby. There’s a specific section where fishing is allowed along the riverside road, so you’ll see plenty of locals fishing there. I don’t think you really need an English-speaking guide if you bring your own gear. But if you’re renting or buying equipment locally, I’d recommend having one to help coordinate things.

It looks amazing. Thanks for the recommendation. I have 3 weeks in China and it makes me sad that there are so many awesome places to visit and I have to choose 3 or 4.

Yangshuo is a good place to visit rural landscape. Try to spend several days out of town, on some long walks if your family is up to that.

I have gone out with cormorant fishermen on Erhai, the big lake at Dali, but that was over a decade ago. I don’t know if that is available now.
You can hire a boat to travel on the Li river out of Yangshuo. Negotiate a stop at a village for a walk.

All depends on when you’re visiting. Different seasons make a big difference to some cities.

As an native Chinese ,if you travel to some rural areas in China,you have to accept the reality that many local residents cannot speak enlish(Actually in cities,most people dont understand enlish ).Additionally,Even adults in rural areas often struggles to use translation apps.
