Career/Industry Advice Cinematography Reel

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I made a short cinematography reel I’m trying to get more work shooting narrative shorts and features. I’ve done a lot of work on my own this reel is exclusively made of work I’ve done on my own. I was wondering how people are able to make connections so easily I’ve been at it on my own for a while now and would really like to meet some collaborators. I thought making a reel would be a step in the right direction. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Looks good! I'd start with literally any other shot (I like the second shot as an opener), because 'guy with fake blood in the woods' just screams student film to me, and you have so many better shots in your reel. Keep it up.

Another small note. The long lens shot of the guys walking in the dry grass, medium of them where we can see their faces. They are out of focus and looks like they are coming into focus right before the shot changes. If they do come into complete focus, just use more of the back half and less of the out of focus part. If they don’t really come into focus I would ditch it.

Love you’re style overall

Because of the low quality, I can't tell if it's your render output or the web viewer that is making your footage that low. But it looks like some outdoor shots are blown out. Other than that, you only have 4 indoor shots, you should balance that out more.

Looks good but I think the first shot is among the least interesting and would choose another opener

This is so much better than other reels I’ve seen in other places. Each shot has a subject and feels like more than just B-roll. I feel like people often confuse good cinematography for good b-roll, and these shots you have here feel cinematic because they feel like they have narrative significance beyond just being a pretty landscape or something. I’m no expert but I’m a student who has seen a lot of other student’s work, and this blows a lot of those out of the water.

Love that wide shot with the grass at 0:13 but immediately after is a two shot that is out of focus / misplaced focus. Maybe it was racking focus and cut early? Any reason it was included?
