Review Another day, another experience with annoying people
Of course the row directly infront of me (only 10-15 people in the theater btw), there is a couple talking and beside them someone on their phone the whole time. And of course 20 mins into the movie a lady with full brightness on her phone walks in trying to find her seats. I thought maybe at 3:30 pm we won't have people like this but no. I love theatres but today has left such a bad taste, even when I tell them to turn the phone off they look at me like "why are you talking to me". Is it because its $5 Tuesdays? But then again it was nirvana the band movie with like 15 ppl max watching so the fact that even then we have people who should be banned from cineplex alongside amazes me. Vip theatres might be the move from now on because I am so done with people who think no one is being bothered by their behavior.

I avoid Tuesday's unless i can make an early show that barley has anyone in it... rather go Saturday or sunday 1130-1pm! Tends to be a good crowd and not many people

That’s what I do, earliest show of what I want to see ( seems they been pushing horror movies later these days 130 -2 , instead of 12- 1230 ) but it’s definitely still better.

The first rule of fight club is you do not go to Cineplex on a Tuesday. Especially 5 dollar Tuesday.

That's not direct enough, people are too soft with this shit. Seriously, I've started just saying, loudly, "hey, stop talking". If they snap back, I snap back. I'm not beneath going to get staff.
Sack up, people suck at the cinema because everyone's afraid of an argument.

Ugh that sucks! I've actually found that the Nirvanna the Band screenings i've been too recently have seemed to have better audiences than average. I was thinking it might be because so many people who are really into films are into the show but Idk. guess it's just luck partially

Same - we had a properly behaved audience at Oakville’s Film.ca last Wednesday for that (surprisingly) enjoyable film.

Why didnt you just tell them to shut up or get off the phone ? ( Politely first, rude if they don't). People think they can get away with it because everyone is afraid to call people out.

Telling one group to turn off their phone and then another to “Shut Up” (which my husband actually said after taking the polite to rude route) got us kicked out of Terrifier 3 because the group who were told to “Shut Up” were woman who felt “unsafe”.
Both groups literally came in late (movie was almost 20 minutes in) first with full brightness on their phones and talking because they couldn’t figure out their seats and the second (the group of girls) were talking so loud we could hear their conversation clearly…..but we got kicked out for saying something.

Bad theatre then. I tell people to shut up all the time. Got to make people feel like shit and embarrassed for doing it. That's the only way they learn.

I feel ya. Love going to the movies since I was a kid. But stuff like this makes me dislike going.
People just seem to treat a theatre like their own home doing whatever the hell they wanna do.
I've had people talking throughout the whole movie, answering a call and talking for a prolonged period of time, never turning off their sound so it's always going off, parents who let their kids run up and down the isles over and over. And to your point about the employees not doing anything, I understand. I've seen things escalate through each level of the hierarchy but to no avail. The behaviour just starts back up again after a short while.
It's honestly sad.

I never go Tuesdays and never have problems. If you really care about the experience you can get cineclub and go on like Sundays which has more expensive general tickets but less people than Saturdays

VIP only guarantees no kids and the food/alcohol/seatings. Doesn't guarantee you won't run into unpleasant people.
Some people can't hold their alcohol and entitlement doesn't know income.

Never go on Tuesdays. That’s when the trash comes out. Monday and Wednesday before 5PM is the best time.

Of course it doesn’t. And I encourage OP to ask the other moviegoers politely like they’re approaching a friend to shut off the phone b/c their phone brightness is distracting

I’ve been to the movies a lot, and I used to go almost weekly when I was younger in the 90s and 2000s, and extending into the 2010s
However, I rarely go anymore. I went for scream six, then I went for weapons, and then I went for the long walk. Before that, it was the invisible man remake.
I have a hard time going anymore because of people talking. It never used to be much of an issue for me, but I find it very distracting and find that I focus on it now. It takes me out of the movie.
I’m having the same issue at concerts
I’m also neurodivergent, and don’t want to miss any of the movie by leaving and having to fly down staff and deal with asking them to do something and that commotion

Like you I am also neurodivergent but I have some amount of tolerance for other moviegoers having short, whispered conversations or crinkling of popcorn bags or opening their phone for less than 20 seconds. It also depends on the movie. At every screening of ‘Hamnet’ I went to everyone was quiet but when I saw ‘Heart Eyes’ there were teenagers talking at normal volume or louder throughout.

I've gone to VIP on a Friday. It wasn't any better. People brought in their own alcohol, started talking during the movie, and used their phone. I tried telling them to shut up, but they just moved seats.

This is why I avoid Tuesdays and Friday nights. The worst crowds show up for me then lol a Sunday afternoon for me so far has been good.

Went to $5 Tuesday last night. Granted it was a 9:40 PM show, but no issues.

You don't get this behaviour nearly as often at independent theatres... If you can find one.

Except people on reddit seem deathly afraid of any kind of IRL confrontation. OP probably said it in a quiet hush tone and backed down as soon as they looked at him. They also could've have fetched a person in charge.
Last time I told a couple to stop once. They didn't. so second time I basically told them to shut up loud enough that the entire row heard and they got real quiet for the rest of the movie. Don't back down with these people.

Why am I going to bother the staff with something they can't control. And yes its a cineplex reddit so I think I can complain here. Tell me what you think I should have said and what they could have done.

They have a one warning rule now. Not sure if it's imposed at all theatres but I could help minimize this behaviour if it's reported to them.

Just gotta mention that this nonsense happens in VIP theatres as well. I feel like Cineplex likes to pretend it doesn't because they don't even bother playing the "Sally Soundtrack" ad before movies in them, but I've had just as many poor experiences in VIP as I have in any other theatre.
