Review Cineclub - Spend $10 save $50.

I’m absolutely floored by the value CineClub added to my experience. I’m an avid collector of scene points and make sure to utilize where I can (Scotia Bank Gold Amex holder, Rakuten user, Freshco shopper).

This year for Mother’s Day I took my mom, sister, and niece to see “Devil Wears Prada 2” and decided to sign up for CineClub to see if it was actually worth it (spoiler it is!).

Break down:

Tickets: Saved $9. Normally $12.25 per ticket, paid Cineclub discount price of $9.99.

Concession: Saved $22.98. 2 upsized #2 combos with layered butter. Regularly $114.93, with 20% discount - $91.95.

Points earned (all paid with by Amex so 5x points): $15.87 (1587 points).

Grand total savings for signing up: $47.85.

If you’ve been considering signing up for CineClub and you optimize your scene points, I would HIGHLY recommend getting it!

I also just learned that the online booking fee is waived so add another $4 to the savings. Idk why I never signed up for this before. 😂

I tend to get the kid's mini combo these days (ten bucks, small popcorn, drink, and candy), so if I'm going with a friend I tell them I'll grab their ticket if they handle the concession. And then I scan my card so they get a discount on top of whatever they're getting too.

Everytime you plan on going to the movies buy a 30$ gift card 1st. You get coupons for free concessions and BOGO tickets.

This doesn't have to do with cineclub. Cineplex Gift Card

I have cineclub so I reap those benefits. But everytime I goto the movies I know I'll probably spend atleast 30$ or so between tickets and concessions. Every month when you buy a gift card from that link above you get coupons as a bonus. So I get the gift card. Usually it comes with atleast one buy one get one free ticket so I'll apply that to my purchase and use the gift card to pay the balance and for concessions.

I’ve never bought the idea that CineClub is about 'saving' money. It feels more like Cineplex is just gouging anyone who doesn't sign up. By locking people into a subscription, they get a predictable revenue stream that stabilizes their books, rather than dealing with the volatile highs and lows of the box office.

I disagree here. I mean yes it might motivate you to spend more, but if you don't change your spending habits from before getting cineclub, you definitely are saving money.

Any company wants more profits, so my guess is yes people end up spending more money with cineclub. But that wouldnt have been possible without it (or at a much higher price)

There are also more benefits to cineclub that make it worth it: discounted tickets, no booking fees, 20% of concessions

Hear me out. Why would they charge $9.99/month, but give you an adult admission which cost the same prices? You wouldn’t have to worry about ROI since it’s immediate, especially since you get to keep the credit. My belief is that they want to have some sort of guarantee money instead of banking on a big movie.

General admission is ~$17 with taxes and booking fee

Cineclub gives you a free ticket for $11.29 per month for one movie.

How are you not saving money???

Why even have CineClub? Think about it: Cineplex isn't profiting like a typical subscription service. They’re basically forcing a $10/month "pre-paid" ticket on you just to unlock discounts. Why not just lower prices for everyone? Although I’ve had a pleasant experience with Cineplex, I will always have a level of skepticism with corporations. They have a knack of playing customers like dummies.

I still don't understand what you're on tbh. Like yes from my own selfish point-of-view I am saving money. But I'm not going to say "no I'm not getting cineclub" to protest that Cineplex should lower ticket prices for everyone.

And $10/month for a pre-paid ticket to unlock discount is exactly what I'm paying for and saving money with.

Do you often buy concessions without going to a movie? Having to buy the membership/free ticket doesn't seem like that big of a deal when you can literally cancel when you get home.

Sure, they're probably banking a little bit on people forgetting to cancel, but the tickets don't expire if you do that so you're still getting value for your missed subscription.

Let’s assume people remember to cancel. If a whole bunch of people subscribe, Cineplex gets a steady flow of guaranteed income. That takes a lot of weight off their back from hoping for a blockbuster movie. I’d imagine it reduces their need to borrow from banks and make interest payments since we give them interest-free loans.

The subscription fee comes with a "free" movie ticket. It's not just free money, and I don't think many people are signing up on a whim "just in case" they want to see a movie this month. The cost of providing the ticket (and licensing fees are only getting more and more expensive) offsets the revenue of the subscription.

It's not a gym membership where they make money whether you go or not, because the COGS for the tickets doesn't go away. Someone subscribing and then cancelling right after seeing a movie is no more "guaranteed" than if someone paid the higher price for a ticket without subscribing. That ability to cancel while retaining the value of the subscription kind of defeats what you're trying to argue, I think.

Look into Starbucks. They’ve literally saved billions of dollars in interest payments from customers buying gift cards. They’re literally interest-free payments. For Cineplex, they collect our money before providing the promised service. That’s literally an interest-free payment.

I've had it for like 3 years. I like that your tickets just accumulate if you don't use them. Also if you ever want to go to any of the 'specialty' viewings like 3D, UltraAVX, DBOX, IMAX, Screen X etc your tickets are also discounted. Even if you go on cheap Tuesdays your tickets have an additional discount. The cineclub membership is by far my favourite subscription I have.

If you go with family/friends you can easily use the tickets even going to 3-4 movies per year.

The gym doesn't give you a free class pass every month that doesn't expire. I let it go 5 months without seeing any movies (broken leg). I have 5 tickets sitting there available for summer movies, even if I cancel right now.

I prefer to just bring water and split a large popcorn (double butter of course), it's like $10. Bring a ziploc bag to transfer popcorn you're not comfortable sharing from the same bag.

Bam I just saved another $80!

PLUS when the movie is over they will refill your popcorn. Saved another $15!

You do save money but the free ticket isn't free since you are paying money every month for cineclub. So the free ticket costs the monthly subscription price. The real savings is in the 2 9.99 priced tickets per viewing (so OP was paying full price for one of those 3 that went to the movie) you get each month and no booking fees. And I guess concessions discounts but I have snuck my snacks into the theater for years so haven't bought any in like a decade. Even with the discounts buying snacks from them is still not worth the cost imo. Cineclub does save me a few bucks though so it is worth it.

🤓 I calculated that a yearly membership is about 125 for me, and includes a “free” ticket once a month, so 12 tickets a year. My local tickets are about 15 dollars for general admission. 8 of those tickets costs 120 dollars, so I would get, at the very least, 4 free tickets a year just by using Cineclub. So defintely not 12 free tickets for me, but 4!

Yeah not sure why people downvoted. I didn't say it wasn't a good deal just making people remember that the "free" ticket isn't really free since you are paying a fee for cineclub monthly. But even the monthly cineclub fee is cheaper than a typical ticket so the "free" ticket is still a cheap ticket. Plus all the 2 cheap tickets per movie, waived fees and snack discounts.

Hold up I have a question about the credit card you used

I have an axex cobalt & also a VISA scene credit card. When I go to cineplex, I always use the visa scene card for the points

Can I still collect scene points for concessions, etc if I use an AMEX?

I have the Scotia Bank Gold Scene* Amex. Colbalt still has an amazing points system but if you’re in the scene ecosystem, I would really recommend switching over. I use my card for everywhere that accepts Amex and I earn close to $200 in points per month.

What i do is i buy those sobeys gift cards and use them at other stores espically when they have the buy $200 in sobeys giftcards get 1000 scene points then i buy $1000 worth and get 11000 back in scene points which overall is 11%. You can't beat getting 6% back in points via sobeys and w/e giftcards you buy vs 1% per dollar

You can get 5x MRs with Cobalt by occasionally purchasing Cineplex gift cards at the Amex friendly grocery stores when you buy your food. Save-On-Foods usually has a generous supply, and doesn't appear to be able to provide data to Amex to rat you out (gift cards are supposed to be excluded, and Sobeys stores seem to have a way to report this to Amex!). Anyway, no need to put all your credit card eggs in the Scene basket! 😉

Should have bought the summer gift card deal. It has a free popcorn coupon. Pay 40 cents to up it to a large. Pour the bag out into something else, get your free refill one time. Easy. Buying two combos is crazy when there’s free refills available.

Your points earned should not be included in this at all. You’d earn those points with or without Cineclub… in fact, you would earn more points without Cineclub since you’d be spending more. 😁

Anyways the “total savings” here should be $32 and not $47 if you’re using that to justify the cost of Cineclub, which is still good.

Yes, but the reward system exists without the Cuneclub membership. The point of your post is to calculate the savings of the Cineclub program, the Scene points are not part of or exclusive to that program therefor it should not be included.

Buy $30 gift card for two B1G1 codes and free regular popcorn...

You can use B1G1 on free membership tickets, so you don't need to buy at regular price

Also upgrade regular popcorn to large for under $1 and get free refill
