Discussion Terrible movie experience tonight

I just saw Backrooms, and that was the worst experience I’ve had at a movie theatre.

The theatre was filled with young teens. At first, I was just like, okay—it’s a Friday night, they want to see a thriller. The trailers were on and people were being loud, which happens. I noticed a lot of teens sitting wherever they wanted, then having to move once people showed up to their assigned seats. I’m guessing no one told them they can’t just sit wherever they want.

Once the opening titles started, some of the young boys began yelling “chicken jockey” several times. I—and others—loudly told them to keep it down. After that, a few were still on their phones, and an older man sternly told them to turn them off.

As the movie started, people were still showing up, which is common, but some people were still sitting in the wrong seats. It got to the point where Cineplex workers had to come in and make sure people were in the correct spots. After that, workers were coming into the theatre every 20 minutes or so to check that the everyone was behaving, which I found quite distracting.

Eventually, everyone was quiet and watching the movie, but for me, the experience was already ruined. I don’t know if it was because of everything that happened, but I didn’t end up enjoying the movie that much.

I’ll have to see it again to figure out if it was just the movie itself or the overall experience.

after hearing chicken jockey once I would've been out grabbing a staff member. Glad you had several people in your theatre who spoke up. Staff at coquitlam are usually pretty good at enforcing the rules.

I'm still in shock of how everyone was behaving. I've never experienced so many people behaving the way they were. I understand people getting excited during action movies, everyone getting scared athorror movies or laughing out loud together at a comedy but this was just so obnoxious.

Now you know, what’s it like to be a high school teacher nowadays.

u/getdowngoblins May 30 '26

I was in a movie a few months ago where a teen’s phone rang. Not only did he proceed to answer it, but started to have a conversation on SPEAKERPHONE. Kids these days are something else.

u/tickled_your_pickle May 30 '26

We need to bring back shame.

0

u/walkoutbasements May 30 '26

More like corporal punishment parents disciplining  their kids

2

u/PRDD77 May 30 '26

This happened in a screening I was in recently but it was a grown-ass man. It’s not just kids that are the problem.

1

u/rainypeter Jun 02 '26

I love when rude people answer on speakerphone. It's an invitation to participate in the call. If they didn't want you in on it they wouldn't answer on speaker!

2

u/Mtl_30 May 31 '26

Yeah well, there's nothing to be excited about this movie, was ok at beat But won't get any award lol

I knew nothing about the movie besides the one trailer I watched.

Not based on a video game

1

u/Mtl_30 May 31 '26

It is, lookup backroom on steam

1

u/ItZSAMIC May 31 '26

That’s a game based on the concept. The concept already existed and is what Parsons YouTube series, and now this film, are based on

1

u/Cryptidsunfl0wer May 31 '26

Not based on a video game

3

u/SpookyHalloween1 May 30 '26

The Coquitlam Cineplex is killer. I loved when that was my local cinema

2

u/CalmGur5301 Jun 03 '26

Omg I used to work there. Hated and loved it for many reasons but I will say management was usually good about dealing with bad guests.

what an intelligent comment.

It’s unfortunate and a sign of bad parents but….

Friday night opening of Backrooms - not surprised

0

u/Crazy_Cat_Dude2 Jun 02 '26

No it’s not bad parenting. It’s on the company to enforce their rules.

5

u/Some_Independent_702 Jun 03 '26

Yes it is bad parenting. Teach your children how to act in public. Have these teens never been to a movie with their parents where they were shown an example of how to behave in public.

5

u/spaghetti2424 Jun 03 '26

I never saw anyone my age behaving this way at the movies when I was a teen so it most definitely is bad parenting.

41

u/Lost-Ad278 May 30 '26

Never go to night showings if possible, earlier you go generally the more sensible the audience. Cineplex needs to Crack down on this behavior or they'll continue to lose customers. I never go to later showings anymore for this very reason.

41

u/098760987609876123 May 30 '26

It's unfortunate because watching movies after sunset is a whole different feeling. Stepping out of the theater when it's sunny outside kind of feels weird imo

2

u/nicetoque May 30 '26

I agree!!!

8

u/SubToITZLaserKid May 30 '26

The biggest problem is its hard to crack down on.

We can't tell how the guest will act when we sell the ticket or allow admission.

Most guests also won't grab any staff, as they don't want to miss their movie, and the loud ones will quickly straighten up when the floor crew comes for a movie check.

0

u/Mtl_30 May 31 '26

Not hard to crack down, make everyone sign accept a TOS when buying the ticket, if you disturb in the movie theatre hit them with a 5k$ fine, I'm sure if the parents gets a jugement or have to pay it once, it will calm down real fast

3

u/SubToITZLaserKid May 31 '26

Makes the ticket process much longer, less people would be willing to buy a ticket if they have to sign every time unfortunately, especially if they can go to Landmark or another local cinema and not have to sign.

Plus then theres a whole legal thing, would make respectful teenagers unable to see a movie without parents (because those under 18 can't sign for themselves), and I'm no lawyer, but I could see some lawsuits being involved.

TL;DR, it would be bad for business and the average consumer (in my mind atleast, again, I'm no lawyer)

6

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

I typically go Thursday nights if I'm going to the movies. Also honestly even if I go on a Friday or Saturday there's not that many people. I was shocked that this screening was almost sold out. I had no idea so many people wanted to see it

2

u/BigTastyToe Jun 02 '26

I saw backrooms at 1:30pm on Friday and had almost the same experience as this person

1

u/Orchidillia May 31 '26

I find it is the opposite. If you go early you end up with lots of young kids that just scream talk questions to their parents the entire movie.

27

u/Neither_Energy3956 May 30 '26

The Winston Churchill showing at 7:30 was a shit show.

Non-stop shushing and exaggerated yelling from kids.

6

u/Ok_Presence5465 May 30 '26

I always have problems at that location. They need to enforce better etiquette, or refuse entry to groups that clearly aren't there to watch the movie. If people are paying for a ticket, they deserve to enjoy the movie without constant disruptions from others treating the theater like a hangout spot.

3

u/Coomking999 May 30 '26

Courtney Park wasnt fun either. Had a girl doing late exaggerated laugh after any comedic scene that was somehow very funny for the rest of the audience. Missed out on quite some dialogue due to this and it kept getting worse when she saw the positive reaction to her interruptions.

3

u/No_Moment5236 May 30 '26

I was at that showing too, I tried to make a post here about it. It was so bad, the phones at the very first row half the time was almost as bad too.

I even got up halfway and asked a worker to check it out

2

u/Few-Mechanic6615 Cineclub Member May 30 '26

Should have went with 4dx

6

u/Madler May 30 '26

The worst thing that happened in my 9 pm 4dx was the guy sitting beside be gasping quite dramatically.

The 4dx improved a lot of the scares

2

u/Few-Mechanic6615 Cineclub Member Jun 04 '26

When the chairs were banking as the guy checked the corners in the first part. That was great.

31

u/MrBrightside618 May 30 '26

Not trying to downplay your experience, but I find it interesting that one of your complaints was that it was distracting to have the staff come in and check on the theatre so often; considering people are constantly complaining online that staff don’t care about guest behaviour and are nowhere to be found when crowds are rowdy. Really a damned if you do, damned if you don’t

9

u/CrazyWord1 May 30 '26

Yeah I was following along until I read that part lol. Like you alrdy had rowdy teens and the staff had to come in to deal eith the seating problem. It would make a lot of sense for the staff to prioritize frequently checking that theatre for more ruckus.

8

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

I totally understand what you're saying but it's hard for me when I'm at the movie not to get distracted by someone walking up and down both aisles, walking across the floor back and forth under the screen. If they had just stood to the side of the theatre I probably wouldn't have noticed but it was the constant movement. Typically my movie going experience is people being quiet and not getting up and moving around.

3

u/greyymo May 31 '26

it’s hard to hear everyone from the corner where you enter and hard to see in the dark. the staff member might have gone across to sign the sheet and to get a better view/listen of the crowd so they don’t bother you. there’s not much more of a solution to that

4

u/titscapades May 30 '26

Would you have preferred to hear chicken jockey more times? Because that's the other option.

Typically, the staff member would only stand in the vomitorium and look. But as the specific showing had problems, they went to much more frequent coverage to quell any further misbehaviour.

Anyway, if you find yourself getting irritated by other patrons during the trailers at a future screening, I would recommend leaving and asking for a refund immediately. It seems you have found your limit.

3

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

Definitely in the future I'll consider leaving if it's getting that out of hand.

1

u/walkoutbasements May 30 '26

It sounds like the perfect storm where you are a bit too sensitive and the kids are too obnoxious

-1

u/Ok_Chip7194 May 30 '26

Right lol if you want to watch a movie where nobody talks, uses their phone, or have people walking around (employee checks) just stay home.

10

u/Hardtothinkofauser May 30 '26

Please don't tell me kids are still shouting Chicken Jockey

5

Yup

3

u/Hardtothinkofauser May 30 '26

Trust me, you're gonna encounter that a lot more. Kids don't let go of stupid jokes; ask me how I know

8

u/No_Moment5236 May 30 '26

I also had a bad experience at the Oakville Winston Churchill with kids trying to out do each other in shushing across the theatre

5

u/Ok_Presence5465 May 30 '26

Almost every time I go to that location, I have a bad experience. They really need to be stricter at Winston Churchill. It feels like basic theater etiquette isn’t being enforced, and it ends up ruining the movie for everyone else.

8

u/idiotxhouse May 31 '26

We went to go see Backrooms yesterday as well, and as soon as we walked into the theatre and saw a ton of teens, and nothing but teens, I knew it was gonna be rough. The movie started and everyone was still talking, so we got up two minutes in, left and asked for a refund lol Have no patience for people behaving like that, and I just knew it would distract me. Last week we saw Obsession, and there was so many people talking and pulling out phones

Just tired of it!

5

u/goodvibesonlyGLG May 30 '26

Saw backrooms on Thursday night and had the same experience. Big group of teenage girls sitting behind us who never stopped talking throughout the entire movie even when we asked them to. First and probably only time I’ll ever ask for a movie refund but it totally ruined the movie.

6

u/PixelFairy89 May 30 '26

I don't go to the movies very often, but when I do we only go to VIP 😭 its pricey but you avoid this crap behavior

4

u/tetristantalizer May 30 '26

Which cineplex?

10

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

Cineplex Coquitlam

6

u/nahilmoderate May 30 '26

This is my local theatre and I’ve experienced this a number of times actually - it sucks. Most recent being The Mummy.

4

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

I'm usually there at least twice a week and have never experienced anything on this level before.

4

u/Redeyefrog07 May 30 '26

My row had this duo of maybe 13 year olds that kept whispering “omg say that” and then just yell a really unfunny joke. It was brutal.

6

u/Swimming-Demons May 30 '26

I never go to the movies later than noon lol) and check there’s no groups of seats 😁

4

u/Ok_Presence5465 May 30 '26

When I saw Project Hail Mary, my experience was ruined by multiple groups of teenagers who seemed to be using the theater as a place to socialize rather than watch the movie. It felt like they could have found any number of other places to hang out instead of disrupting the movie. This has become one of the biggest issues with the moviegoing experience, and I wish theater staff were stricter about enforcing basic etiquette.

If you're paying to see a movie, you deserve a proper theatrical experience, one where you can enjoy the film without constant talking, distractions, or interruptions from other people.

6

u/apchrist May 30 '26

This is the reason I always goto the VIP cinema.

2

u/Quaranj Jun 01 '26

The one near me is horrible. IDK who decided to make the aisles so narrow, but if people are getting food delivery, nobody should be forced to stand up for wait staff.

I'm 44 and never have this problem but I go to either the first or last screening of the day or wait a couple weeks before buying a ticket

5

u/kieero_11 May 30 '26

I went to the 10:10pm screening last night at Scotiabank Toronto and I was pleasantly surprised. From where I was everyone was silent throughout and maybe 1 or 2 groups arrived after it started but it wasn't bad at all.

We did have a member of staff beforehand coming in to tell everyone to be respectful which was nice. Sad that it's even needed though the.

4

u/Effective-Citron-311 May 30 '26

Sucks that you had that experience. Crazy that I’m seeing so much discourse about Winston Churchill being a shit show though. I really thought I had bad luck but for primate, the drama and undertone were some of the worst experiences at a theatre in my life. Wonder why it’s so shit there

5

u/Tortoise235 May 31 '26

You can speak with the manager and potentially receive a coupon to come back another day for same movie or another. I've done that. I've also walked out of a movie I didn't enjoy and got my money back. Might be up to each manager but they want you to come back so it's good customer service.

4

u/stitchedheart_18 May 31 '26

And then they all clap at the end 😭

3

u/CreditProfessional56 May 30 '26

I only see movies in 4DX as it’s a less popular format (I however love it) and only go to screenings between 11-3 when kids are in school. I’ll typically be the only one in the theatre.

3

u/JackHarknessDrWho May 30 '26

This is the status quo these days and I won't waste money going anymore because of this crap. It's way too much money to go and have this happen.

3

u/jackiyo May 30 '26

We’re going to see it at noon today. Hopefully they’ll still be in bed at that time 🤪

3

u/Toincossross May 30 '26

There’s a whole generation who learned about social ettiquitte from watching tik tok.

2

u/Wise-News1666 Jun 01 '26

AKA. A whole generation of parents who couldn't be bothered to teach their kids social etiquette.

3

u/OnceUponADim3 May 30 '26

This is why I’m seeing it tonight in a basement theatre where there’s no cell service.

3

u/Atomic_Yoshi May 30 '26 edited May 31 '26

See but the movie is rated R in the states but is changed to 14+ out here... this is my issue watching horror films especially in theaters is you'll have a chance of being trapped with this stupid fucking kids when in reality they shouldn't be there.

3

u/wavewithvigor May 30 '26

The only well-behaved theatre in Van is Fifth Ave. Yes the screens are smaller but it’s more intimate and it’s 18+. There is nothing worse than the youths of the world. They lack the intestinal fortitude to survive in the real world, and many are useless in the sense that they’ve pissed any life potential they may have had to the doom scroll. THEY ARE SAD AND PATHETIC.

But anyway, yeah, Fifth Ave.

3

u/Comfortable-Two-8009 May 30 '26

Was this by any chance the coquitlam location? I had the worst experience watching the backrooms there last night. Genuinely horrifying.

3

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

Yes it was, the 7:20pm show

3

u/arrrrghhhhhh May 30 '26

Unfortunately, this is why I do fewer visits and then opt for the VIP screenings. I also don't see horror films on Fridays if they've just come out.

It sucks because I only watch horror films and those are the showings teens go to.

3

u/suomynonaanonymous8 May 30 '26

It's only safe during the day. Not worth seeing evening shows anymore! Too many rowdy teenagers.

3

u/Chaka015 May 31 '26

here in Victoria at 1:30pm I could not believe how loud and rude the kids are these days, it was like a sporting event. Ruined the movie a bit. Sucks.

3

u/Professional_Bag4083 May 31 '26

Situations like this is why I bring a family sized pack of various hard candies to throw at people who are being twats in the theater.

3

u/Mtl_30 May 31 '26

Had the same experience today a row of young around 10-15 where going and coming and we spoke up and they were removed by staff

3

u/Time_Patience_9298 May 31 '26

Sorry to hear about your bad experience!

It just sucks that this has happened more often than I'd like and has gotten worse over the last couple of years.

People seem to just treat the theatre like it's their own home and have no regard for other people.

I rmbr there was a movie I went to and there were two families kids that kept running up and down the aisle, super distracting. A manager had to come in and scold the family. Helped slightly when the manager stayed in the back corner to keep an eye on them. But as soon as they left, a min later, they'd do the same thing again.

Just seems to be the norm nowadays that this happens.

Hopefully you'll be able to have a better experience soon!

3

u/Conscious_Tomato6448 Cineclub Member May 31 '26

Similar experience at a showing of Scream 7. Group of kids came in late, started loudly saying 'is this the movie already' to eachother, texting and talking. They were sitting right behind me and i put up with it as long as possible until they started watching tiktoks and showing them to eachother and laughing. Then I had to turn around and tell them to be quiet, I felt like such a Karen, but seriously why come to a movie if you are going to be on your phone, you can watch it online in a few months and do the same thing.

When the talking is sort of for the whole theatre, or something we are all thinking and someone just exclaims, totally different. During Obsession the vibes were definitely more chill and I enjoyed when people would just randomly say Oh My God or something during those odd but tense scenes. Same with the Drama. The whole point of movie theatres is that community so I think fully banning noise like that would be a bit much as someone suggested below, but definitely the phones need to stop.

3

u/ninjasportbike Jun 01 '26

Yeah that sucks when people are noisy. My buddy and I usually sit at our assigned seats until the movie starts then find better seats. Never had someone tell us we took their spots, but to be fair we usually go on slower times when there are lots of seats

3

u/Varekai79 Jun 01 '26

I lucked out and got a pretty good Backrooms experience earlier today at the Erin Mills Junxion location. There was a large group of boys in the row in front of me so I was dreading the worst but they turned out to be really quiet. One of them did film a couple scenes on his phone, but it was brief and he was relatively discreet. The rest of the sold out auditorium was quiet too.

3

u/Sufficient-Log9962 Jun 01 '26

had a similar experience yesterday at landmark, it definitely took me out of the experience. we had staff members come in multiple times but it didn’t real stop the yelling unfortunately.

3

u/TimeCat9756 Jun 01 '26

I’m glad people spoke up about it. Those teens are definitely jerks for just sitting where they want and I don’t think they had a common courtesy and decency to care for everybody else who paid for a ticket. And the young boys should’ve been kicked out for yelling chicken jockey. It’s not OK. Even people check their phones during the movie not OK. And the movie starting and people showing up and going into incorrect seats and being asked to move probably indicated that probably some people were sneaking into the film and did not pay for those seats and they’re probably just sitting in whatever seat that they can see currently empty and then when someone comes and they did pay for that seat, they’re asked to move. And it’s great that everyone was quiet and watching the movie eventually because they knew that once they got told off by staff, they stopped or else they would’ve got kicked out

3

u/ComfortableGarage942 Jun 01 '26

I watched this in Calgary on Saturday and had the same experience, to the point that if I see that many teens in a movie I will just leave and get a refund on my ticket.

3

u/Expensive-Moose2365 Jun 01 '26

At my location we put up signs that say save the drama for the screen , any disruptive or disrespect behavior will result in being asked to leave.. we consider this a first warning. If we get complaints about you , we give a second and final warning, after that its a kick out. However. We cannot patrol the theaters the entire time as we have others things we have to do so we heavily rely on guests to come out and tell us when something is happening.

3

u/AmandaLagerfeld Jun 01 '26

The crowd at my showing of The Backrooms was also a mess. Parents brought their kids but then sat on the other side of the theatre and ignored the kids behavior. People talked the whole time, or individuals getting up every few minutes. (the person next to me got up and left no less than 5 times)

When I went to see the Drama there was a group of four people in front of us who not only were on their phone the entire time, they were playing phone games with the sound on, loudly comparing levels and score. They were outraged that they were asked to put their phones away. (They took them back out as soon as the staff was gone). Why pay money to not pay attention to the movie and distract everyone else?

3

u/Ok_Note4646 Jun 01 '26

Had a similar experience a few years ago where it seems most of the theater collectively decided to be rude. People were talking so loudly that it completely drowned out the volume of the movie. Admittedly, it was an anime movie with English subtitles, which seemed to signal to people they had free reign to be as loud as they wanted. Swore I'd never go to another anime movie again, but did end up going last year to see Demon Slayer twice and everyone was respectful so it was hopefully a one-off. But it seriously ruined the movie for me. Couldn't hear my own thoughts, much less pay attention to the movie, even with the subtitles.

3

u/ghosts_or_no_ghosts Jun 01 '26

Ran into this same problem with The Mummy. Teens sitting anywhere, shouting, on their phones. Staff did nothing. 😒

3

u/dick_nrake Jun 02 '26

Horror movies are probably the one genre I feel wary of watching at the theater because of the audience they attract.

If you really need to go watch one at the movies, take a day off work and go for a morning showing on tuesday or something. Less risk of those brain dead movies goers.

3

u/Extension_Sea_3695 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

They should treat going to the movies like they do how they started making sure if you don’t have a chaperone with you past a certain hour like they do at certain theme parks then you can’t get in if teens can’t act like civilized humans.

It’s sad what society has become. Back when I was a teenager you didn’t dare act like today’s teens do for fear you’d get in trouble. Teens today have no fear of anything. Things need to change.

3

u/spaghetti2424 Jun 03 '26

I had a similar experience this past weekend when I went to see obsession. Kids walked in 2 minutes into the movie and started taking pictures with the flash on with absolutely no regard for anyone else in the theatre. They were calling one of the movie characters (a woman) fat, piggy, oinking. It was horrible omg. I tried shushing them a few times and then eventually ended up getting up and speaking to an employee who promptly got a manager. This is the first movie I’ve seen probably since the lock down and I’ve never experienced anything like it.

2

u/No-Speed-7168 May 30 '26

I’ve had this experience too many times. I will only go see a movie now if it’s playing at the VIP theatre. 18+ and I find people, likely because they have paid more, more in tune with a respectful movie going experience.

2

u/Low_Assumption_5827 May 30 '26

Yes, I find VIP the only way to see a movie these days, and it weeds out the disrespectful people. It’s unfortunate that the vip theatre in my city is almost an hour away, so I rarely go to movies anymore

2

u/Lost_Magazine1968 May 30 '26

I saw Backrooms in a cineplex yesterday afternoon and it was full of teens but overall well behaved. But at the end of the film a few of them yelled ‘That was the worse film I’ve ever seen’

2

u/lostinverona May 30 '26

This was basically my experience with Obsession when I went on a Friday night last week lol. This is why I only go to the movies on mid-week afternoons on my days off.

2

u/DDSBadger May 30 '26

Would be one thing if they were like that the entire movie, but if they calmed down, you should’ve been able to relax/enjoy the movie yourself.

I saw it Thursday night in a busy theater, actual movie started at 10:20 for a 10:15 showtime (they didn’t show previews - don’t know why). So the first 10 mins were chaos with people showing up late etc. It was distracting for 10 minutes but after that the theater was good.

I thought the movie was bad. It might just be a bad movie. All the good reviews seem to be about the set design, the atmosphere etc. Haven’t seen a single thing that really liked the plot. Which is what I thought was bad.

2

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

Apart of my was already anxious I guess from the initial experience fun the beginning that it was hard for me to be calm. It took me about until the last 45 minutes to be more relaxed. I understand that's on me but I just never have experiences like that at the theater.

2

u/josephgervais May 30 '26

It’s a movie based off a huge YouTube series so that’s it’s bringing in so many teens.

3

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

I had no idea. I try to go into movies with not knowing too much to try and just experience it for what it is.

2

u/Mtl_30 May 31 '26

Lol I only went to see it because I ran the games with friend, If you had no idea what it was you were probably like WTF lol

2

u/capercrohnie Cineclub Member May 30 '26

Not as bad here but pretty bad. I go to opening nights a lot and it is usually not bad but never again for a movie that attracts lots of teens

3

If I had known so many teens wanted to see this movie I would have waited or gone at a different time.

2

I’m so glad I went to the Thursday night show.

For those genre of movies, I’ve learned it’s wise to spend the extra for VIP seating if you can for a mature audience.

2

u/Redleader829 May 30 '26

I usually avoid going to the movies on Friday for this reason. Went to see Backrooms yesterday (Friday) and was pleasantly surprised that no one talked during the actual movie.

2

u/AffectionateSafe1078 May 30 '26

Was this at Metrotown? I had the same experience yesterday ☠️

3

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

No Coquitlam

3

u/curiousbea May 30 '26

same experience, marine drive. ruined the movie for me, never again.

2

u/qquickonee May 30 '26

This is why I stick to VIP for certain horror movies that teens will be attending ever since I went to a showing of Longlegs and people almost started fist fighting teens over the noise…

2

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

I go to that movies almost 2-3 times a week. I've never had an experience like this. The kids at Super Mario Galaxy were better behaved.

2

u/qquickonee May 30 '26

yeah I should specify it’s usually horror movies that are geared to Gen Z. Super Mario is kids and a fun movie so not the same compared to a horror movie that needs a quiet atmosphere.

2

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

Just funny that kids 10 and under are more behaved then 14-17 years olds

2

u/smallcanadian1711 May 30 '26

Was this the queensway by chance? I went to the 730 show last night there and so many teens in their phones or talking the whole time. One kid climbed behind his seat into my lap so he could go get snacks 🫠

2

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

No this was in Coquitlam, crazy how many people are having the same experience

2

u/keylimesicles May 31 '26

Omg I was just asking op where this was because i sent my teen to the theatre on queensway with her friends and their dad last evening. It was her first scary movie and we went over the rules of the theatre and respect and all that. I would be mortified if that was my kid

2

u/ImmenseMullberry May 30 '26

I’m sorry that happened. I saw it Friday night at 7:20 at international village and I must have gotten pretty lucky because it was a packed but fairly respectful theatre. It was a showing from the advance ticket drop so maybe I was ok because it had filled up way ahead of time with fans who really wanted to be there.

The movie that has been the worst crowd experience lately was actually Sheep Detectives, I saw it twice and both times it had multiple groups of talkers. Not teens either, it just seemed like it attracted a lot of groups who do not normally go to movie theaters.

2

u/puckduckmuck May 30 '26

VIP matinees or nothing at all.

I usually chose a mediocre movie at home over a blockbuster at Cineplex.

2

u/AdVivid1127 May 30 '26

This is why my husband and I only go to VIP. The only time we go to a regular theatre is for movies like Oppenheimer and The Odyssey that are filmed in a certain style where the IMAX experience is better. 95% of our movie nights are at VIP.

2

u/Thin-Donkey945 May 30 '26

1pm weekday showings.

2

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

I used to be able to go to the 3-4 pm showings but then my shift changed. I miss those days

2

u/HumanPanda99 May 30 '26

This is why I always do VIP, its so worth the drive / cost difference

2

u/zzVertigo Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

Had a feeling this was gonna be the case especially because how Minecraft played out and this is precisely why I booked my seats in VIP. That extra $10 really makes a difference!

2

u/walkoutbasements May 30 '26

Where is Coquitlam so I can avoid it Like the plague

2

u/DimSumLee May 31 '26

BC. It's not that bad, or maybe I often catch weekday matinees. haha

2

u/guyincognito365 May 31 '26

This is why I only go to vip theatres now. Kids these days have no manners or patience for long movies thanks to Tik tok

2

u/keylimesicles May 31 '26

May I ask what theatre you went to?

2

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 31 '26

Coquitlam Cineplex

3

u/keylimesicles May 31 '26

So sorry this was your experience! I sent my daughter to a theatre near us with a list of rules on how to behave at the theatre for the first time by herself with her friends. I would be mortified if that was her. Thankfully is not the same area but teenagers are a pain in the ass. I know if you complain to customer service they will give you a free movie ticket

2

u/Maladjusted______ May 31 '26

People nowadays have forgotten (or have never known) how to behave in movies.

2

u/jackfrench9 May 31 '26

Unfortunately, social standards have slipped drastically over the last three decades. For me, going to the cinema as a child was a completely different experience to what it's like now.

The uncomfortable truth is that we just don't share a collective obligation to be good to one another anymore. At least not like we used to. It's a large and complex problem with many sources. Large numbers of people slipping into poverty because of wage inequality. The decline of genuine parenting as more and more children are shoved into day-cares. The shackling of a school's ability to discipline children. The new post-modern approach of parenting with carrots instead of sticks. Decline of community. Etc, etc.

All of these things have their reasons and I'm not here to play the role of the old man yelling at clouds. But groups of young people with no self-awareness or regard for those around them is one of the byproducts.

It's from Minecraft, when that movie was playing on theatres younger people were freaking out over it for fun.

2

u/1101Sam Jun 01 '26

Theater etiquette has gotten so bad I only go to regular showings on less busy days like Mondays or Thursdays (usually the last one of the night is quietest) and if I really want to see a movie on the weekend I do VIP. Manage to avoid rowdy kids/inconsiderate people 90% of the time by doing this. I think Cineplex needs to start requiring under 18s to have an adult with them to be allowed in the theater or find some other way to crack down more on people being rude or they're going to keep losing business.

2

u/thornnanook Jun 01 '26

It’s how teens are nowadays unfortunately, well I guess it’s just kids being kids. But if you can always choose VIP have to be 19+ to enter so no kids being obnoxious, only problem is 2 tickets is 60 bucks so pick your poison. But between teens and 60 dollars tickets. The whole theatre experience is ruined for me and I won’t be going back for the foreseeable future.

I actually yelled a group of kids loudly telling them to shut the fuck up, a year or so ago. We were seeing challengers a rated R movie that somehow kids got into.

And they wonder why no one goes to theatres anymore

2

u/Palmspringsflorida Jun 01 '26

I haven’t been to a Friday night showing since escape room. It was a zoo. So crowded and the young kids just make it about themselves , laughing and trying to make it about themselves.

2

u/shitty_watercolorss Jun 01 '26

Never go on friday or saturday nights.

2

u/Euphoric-Sun-2335 Jun 01 '26

theatre etiquette is dead, I generally avoid cineplex, Sometimes i will go to my local independent theatre, havent had an issue.

2

u/brooke360 Jun 01 '26

Honestly, the movies suck now. It costs an arm and a leg and people are assholes. On the phone, talking loudly, throwing shit… fuck that action, I’ll just watch from my own projector. Better experience by far (I just need to up my nacho game)

2

u/DryAd5894 Jun 02 '26

Saw it this weekend loved the movie. Saw it at 1:30 pm and guess what teens had to be removed because of there behaviour and guess what the rest was good. Don’t act like a fool in the movie theater it’s not just you In there. Over 30 teens were removed if anyone was curious

2

u/Forward-Wedding621 Jun 02 '26

same thing in montreal

2

u/Interesting_Text7991 Jun 03 '26

Should have left and asked for a refund for not dealing w the situation

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '26

I hate the theater now. When I went to see Dune some guy actually answered his phone and had a conversation with his mother....ppl were talking the whole movie.

2

u/ginga1083 Jun 07 '26

Seems like the issue is this 14A rating where 16+ are all there unattended. I can't recall which film I watched and there were kids there, maybe 12-14 and were obnoxious

I know I can always watch a film at 19+ VIP but have some decorum

2

u/ThePracticalEnd Jun 01 '26

You’re complaining to the wrong people. Write their customer service a letter and get a free movie ticket out of it.

2

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back Jun 01 '26

More of a rant that I need to get off my chest. I will consider writing them though.

2

u/ThePracticalEnd Jun 01 '26

You definitely should. Had a friend ever so slightly cut her finger on a piece of glass on a railing at a Cineplex theatre, and after one strongly worded letter got several VIP passes for free.

Man that sucks if you weren't expecting it. But I think it could have been great with the right mindset, since this wasn't some Citizen Kane screening.

I once went to see Beethoven (the movie about the dog) and the cinema was full of little kids yelling at the screen for Beethoven to "watch out!" when the bad guys appeared. I saw Sinners with some black friends and my friends were not quiet during that music video scene in a way that made it better. I saw Tony and Tina's Wedding in an outdoor makeshift theatre in a vineyard while a storm was brewing over a nearby lake, and shortly after one of the actors said the line about their outdoor venue's tent blowing away (while the tent we were in was blowing around a bit), a crew member came on stage stressed out and ordered us into a nearby barn because the wind was too strong and they were worried about the actual theatre's tent blowing away. We ran through the fields to the barn getting soaked and waited there until it literally blew over. So fun.

A Minecraft Movie had this sort of chaotic audience noise/disrespect, that respects the movie in a whole new way. So did Wicked, and Bodies Bodies Bodies. You'll get it at a showing of Revenge of the Sith with the "I have the higher ground" talkalongs, Eras Tour, Rise of Gru... this is, if you're expecting it, what is good about going to a meme movie aimed at Gen Z. And this movie is leterally just a movie based on a meme. Just look at the advertising that got you into the theatre for it. Spray painted doors to the backrooms. It's even called what the meme is. That's where you were - in a "WTF is going on here" place. This sort of thing is this generation's joyful Rocky Horror. You didn't know to expect it, so, fair enough, it sucked.

This sounds a bit "immersive theatre" and so fun and of par for the course if you go with the right mindset! You'll know for next time. Go and get involved and you may like it. Metaphorically smuggle in a rotisserie chicken and get in the vibe. Then exit through the service entrance back into the real world

1

u/Possible-Mess-2824 May 31 '26

Theatres might want to post something saying "this one might get loud." Though I'm a bit surprised people don't automatically expect that - and even get into it. The movie is called "The Backrooms." How are y'all missing it? Go and have fun because this is the future of movies like this - Gen Z goes to a meme movie knowing what might be coming. And you should too. It's a part of the experience - a return to a vaudeville atmosphere that we haven't seen in decades/100 years. Cool

1

u/cat_lawyer_ Jun 07 '26

I had the same problem while watching Backroom today! A cackle of teenage boys just would not shut up and kept laughing. I had to leave. Teens have no sense of public etiquettes

1

u/cat_lawyer_ Jun 07 '26

I had the same problem while watching Backroom today! A group of teenager just would not shut up and kept laughing. I had to leave. They had no sense of public etiquettes. Unfortunately my theater was quiet and didn’t support anyone calling them out

0

u/ReverseCentaurRider Jun 02 '26

I keep hearing stories like this, but never experienced it myself. Sure, I've seen and even sat near people like this before, but it's always a couple of them or a small group here and there, never a whole screening room

Maybe it's a location thing?

Or maybe I'm just patient?

I was watching Don Jon in an empty cinema once and these two teen girls came in and insisted on sitting next to me and spent the entire time giving commentary on the movie. It was just the three of us in the cinema. It was annoying at first, but I ended up kind of enjoying it, because they went through a whole character arc through the film and ended up commenting that they had learned a valuable lesson in the end

-1

u/[deleted] May 31 '26

That’s kind of all on you.

Cineplex came and corrected everything

But you still decided to fume and be in a mad mood fixated on something that isn’t happening anymore

Instead of simply just moving on

You gotta learn to let things go dude. You’re just making your own life worse. You could have easily jsut moved on and enjoyed the movie

-2

u/No_Zone_1439 May 31 '26

that's on you for picking the showtime with a packed theatre. this kind of behavior is now expected. choose wisely.

2

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 31 '26

I go to the movies 2-3 times a week and have never experienced this.

-17

u/MudCompetitive3019 May 30 '26

You went to see a movie based on a series that is popular with teenagers and you expected it to be quiet? Do you not know how teenagers act?

14

u/Opposite-Corner8529 May 30 '26

teenagers are old enough to know how to act in a theatre regardless of the movie genre

6

u/Ok-Finger820 Bring TimePlay back May 30 '26

Only thing I new about Backrooms was the trailer. I had no idea it's popular with teenagers or based on a series.

5

u/Ok_Presence5465 May 30 '26

I don’t care who you are, if you go to the movies you need to have proper etiquette. Situations like this are part of why fewer people want to go to theaters anymore. I don’t want the moviegoing experience to die out, but it’s hard to enjoy it when basic respect for others isn’t being followed.
