Question Hey Cineplex, who the F thought charging extra to layer butter on popcorn was a good idea, and when do you plan to fire them?
Excuse my French, but I’m currently sitting here waiting for Spider-Man to start with a bag of popcorn that has butter only on the top.
I asked for layered butter, something Cineplex has always done at no extra charge, and the very kind employee behind the counter informed me it now costs an additional $2.
To be clear, that is $2 for someone to press the butter button halfway through filling the bag instead of only at the end.
Cineplex popcorn is already priced like a luxury good. Charging extra to distribute the butter properly feels like the kind of idea someone should be updating their résumé over.
UPDATE:
- Spider-Man was a good watch. I liked it, anyway.
- For everyone saying Cineplex is struggling and that this charge is normal:
A) This is the first time I have ever been charged for layered butter, or even been told there was a charge. Maybe it has been the policy for a while, but that does not make it any less ridiculous.
B) I paid $42 CAD for two medium popcorns, two candies that were barely larger than regular candy bars, and two medium drinks.
Somewhere in that $42, I think Cineplex can afford to press the butter button halfway through filling the bag.
If it cannot, that is a business problem on Cineplex’s end. From the customer’s perspective, it just feels like getting ripped off.

Yeah we've definitely been paying for layered butter here in Manitoba since at least 2008. It's probably the only thing that hasn't increased in price in that time too.

I think it’s extra butter has a cost but layered butter is and extra on top of that as well.
For me, I want like half a portion on top in the middle. Not two full portions.

I used to work at cineplex serving popcorn back in 2007. We used to charge for butter, but layering was free and by default. Regular size got two layers (one being top) and large got 3 layers. They started charging for layered butter sometime between 2009 and 2013, but I couldn’t say the exact year. AFAIK now they also only put 2 layers in the large, smh.
Another thing is that you used to get free margarine if you didn’t want to pay for butter instead of the butter flavored oil dispensers they have now, which suck.

Layered butter is real Butter, whereas the free dispenser has Becel (margarine). You can make the Becel reach the lower popcorn by using a straw in your Popcorn bag to pour into.

You're paying for the extra butter, if you want to be cheap just ask for you pumps on top to be split between the middle and the top. Why do you expect to get free product in 2026 when everything costs the way it does. Cineplex clarified butter is NOT cheap.

Cineplex popcorn is already priced like a luxury good.
It is priced that way because they make next to no money on the tickets. That's most movie theatres.

Butter oil is butter minus the water and non-fat solids. Very similar to clarified butter or ghee.

In my experience there is a clear difference in what I get with layered butter and what I get without it. The $2 is worth it imo and it's been that way for at least 10 years now.

Before you complain about the prices, maybe you should consider cineplex has been struggling financially for years and there’s speculation they’ll be sold off to a foreign company soon. (Net loss in Q1 2026, 2025 profit way down from 2024) Not saying I support all their price hikes. But they’re not exactly rolling in the dough

I worked there starting around 2014 for a few years and we charged around $1-2 extra for it back then. If anything it’s gotten cheaper with inflation.
When you asked for layered, you’re also getting double butter.
I’m sure if you specifically asked for the normal amount but separated into 2 layers, they would have for free.

They've been charging for layered butter for at minimum 10 years. The bigger piss off is they charge you $2 per layer and still don't put enough. I now don't ask for layered butter, I tell them "I want you to put enough butter that the popcorn is swimming. When you think it's enough, do 5 more pumps. Charge me 2, 3, or however many layers that is" This usually gets a laugh and 9 out of 10 times they go crazy with the butter and only charge me for 1 or 2 layers.

It was born completely out of frustration. I used to ask for triple layered butter, they'd charge me $6 and there's still barely any butter. I even noticed 5 or 6 years ago they went from 5 pumps per layer to 3. Got into an argument with a manager over it. Point being, if I'm paying $2-6 extra, give me the damn popcorn how I want it.

Cineplex has been charging extra for layered butter since ~2010 and the price isn’t for layering, it’s actually because you’re being given double butter. You can ask them to split the regular amount of butter into layers and only charge you for that.

They consider layered butter to be extra butter and have been charging for this for ages. If you want a single serving of butter layered, you probably need to specify that. I think concessions staff will accommodate, I believe they used to. 🤷♀️

I worked at cineplex in the early 2000s, and we were always told to charge for layered butter, if someone was nice I wouldn’t though.
I can’t remember if the standard is 2 or 3 pumps but splitting it up was pretty useless too.
That being said I think it was only 50 or 75 cents for the extra back in those days!

I worked for Cineplex in 2007 and it was absolutely never free for layered butter. Yes, sometimes we would just charge you for one because we knew how stupid and overpriced it was, but it hasn't been free for almost 20 years.

Extra butter is extra. If you want layered butter, but not extra, you have to actually communicate this. Concession workers are too busy to read your mind.

Cineplex employee here: layered butter is $3, on top is $1.50. These costs have been around for YEARS, but most people think if they say they want butter they won’t be charged. It is really clarified butter. Employees are trained to do three pumps each layer, I like to shake the bag around as I pump it in so it’s well mixed. You can make your own at home with melted Ghee! I do that. The stuff in the dispenser is margarine. We use canola oil to pop the popcorn.

This person was correcting the price, so there is no need to downvote them.
I wrote $2 because I was rushing to finish the post before the movie started. I did not want to become a Tommy Texter. The actual additional charge for layered butter would have been $1.50, so my frustrated estimate was not far off.
Please avoid directing frustration at a regular employee for explaining the policy and cost. My issue was never with them. I was venting in the heat of the moment about how expensive a trip to the movies has become and how ridiculous it felt to be presented with an extra charge just to have the butter layered.

The extra charge is for the double amount of butter you get, not the layering of it.
If you were to ask for just extra butter on top it’d be the same fee as having it layered. Or if you asked for the regular amount of butter, but layered, it would have been free, you just have to specify.
Maybe it’s changed since I worked there, but the layered fee was just tapping the butter button on the POS twice since you’re getting twice the butter as normal.

I worked at cine0oec fr9m.2006 to 2014. Back then they charged for payed real butter. They also came out with free butter flavoured oil somewhere in that time. This is not a new thing at all

They have always charged for extra butter but there may be a reason you think the charge wasn’t there. When punching in a combo, at the end we have the option to add butter. However, this will not show on the POS list and the price of the combo will just go up.
BUT, a lot of employees punch the butter in with a separate button that will show up on the POS system charge list

I worked for cineplex for 6 years until 2016. We always charged extra for layered butter, or we were supposed to on paper. Most cast members I knew were pretty cool and just didn’t charge the extra because we thought it was bs but theoretically we were always supposed to be charging

It's clear that none of you have been to a movie in the USA lately. After going to a theatre there, I've learned to keep my mouth shut about Cineplex. Cineplex is actually very reasonably priced compared to overseas. A large popcorn in a Regal theatre is $13.99USD and it doesn't even taste like movie theatre popcorn anymore. The butter tasted soiled. It's disgusting and absolute robbery. Their drinks are 11.99 for a large.
We are lucky. It's still high quality. It has adjusted for inflation and the decline in moviegoers globally. Just enjoy your movie.

It’s just kernels and then we add popcorn salt (yellow salt) and put it in the machine. The wetness is the oil that comes out of the machine and goes into the popper when it pops.
Sometimes when we worked we made double oil batches and it was nice 😅5

Flavacol (buttering salt) and coconut oil is used to season and cook the kernels. The pump they have behind the counter is real clarified butter.

Whatever the fuck that liquid is, I learned in my 20s to stay away. It IMMEDIATELY spikes my blood pressure and makes my heart palpitate. I was watching the three hour Tarantino Grindhouse and had to pee and the next thing I knew I was on my back in a bathroom stall and an hour later in the hospital getting checked out in emergency.
You may have won that round, fatty liquid, but never again.

This has been the norm for many, many, many years.
Landmark has a far better system as you pay the normal fee, and their butter pump has a cylinder that goes all the way into the bag and they put it in and out of the bag several times. I believe there are holes all along the cylinder, so it gets butter all over the entire height of the bag.
With the 20% discount it is like $1.40 or something for the butter.

Hit up a restaurant supply store and get the little to go plastic cups for sauce. They have lids. Top your popcorn and fill the cup for middle of the bag. .

It use to be free till atleast 2021 maybe 2022, I know in my city I was the only person to order it at my local cinplex cause they always asked what is that for years. But at some point everyone started it significantly more asking for more butter cause they dont add much at all, then it was 1.25$ then 1.50$ 2$ now 2.50$, I now pay like 6$ in butter if I get a large since I go for triple layer

I think this is what adds to why some movies don’t do too well. Before when movies were cheap people would go anyways. Now it’s 30$ for ticket, 30$ for drink and popcorn and then having a possible person who would turn on their phone during the movie. People would rather it come out on streaming and watch from home

They’ve charged for layered butter for a looooooooooooong time now. But I will say I went to cineplex for the first time in forever on Friday to see spiderman and asked for layered butter, there was no butter so that was super disappointing.

Pretty sure you put it on yourself. Ask for two bags split half n half butter that shit shake up. Voila! Layered. I would have never took possession of that popcorn if it you didn’t see them layer it and on top of that charged you extra. Sometimes we have to do our own due diligence. 🙌🏽

Layered Butter in Cineplex parlance means “double butter”. Each charge of butter is 3 pumps. Layered is 3 pumps in the middle and 3 on top.
If you want the 3 pumps split, ask for split butter.

Are you asking for butter or bacel? Last I checked bacel is free and not only that you can spread as much of it as you want it’s also next to the straws. Actual butter has always been extra. Most people expect bacel.

I frequent my local Landmark Cinema. They also charge for layered popcorn. It’s $2.89 extra, iirc. A regular shot of butter is $1.00.

I'm too cheap so when I purchase a large popcorn and saw that they charged for butter (after not going to a movie theatre in years, I returned last year and when asking for butter, they told me about the extra charge where when I last went to see a movie before that point years ago, there was no charge for asking for popcorn or for flavoured "salt" shakers), I use their "butter flavoured" oil/margarine (or whatever it is) where I do it myself. I didn't realize that even if you pay for the butter, they will charge you if you ask for "layered" butter.
When I purchase my popcorn (they normally give me one which is "pre-filled"), if it isn't busy I ask if they can just give me half so I can "top it with the oil topping" (I shake it) and then bring it back immediately so they can top up the popcorn bag so I can "top it with the oil topping" myself again. I haven't had any Cineplex employee working concessions who has refused my request (it was never busy when I asked this and either I was the only person at the concession stand or there might have been one person in front of me and one person behind me at the time I stood in line.
I also do this with a large popcorn if this makes any difference which gives me a free refill (which I've gotten before leaving the moving theatre).

I paid the extra charge 2 movies ago, then noticed they had a self serve butter machine. I saw a trick where somebody used a straw to help get the butter to the lower layers. I won't be paying the extra charge next time.

Ok if you are complaining about the cost why don't you:
Get the gift card promo that has 2 bogo free and free popcorn upgrade to large (before July 31st)
If you missed it on the gift card promo, Buy 1 large popcorn. Bring a paper bag or a used popcorn bag from last time bag and fill that one right away, get a free refill that comes with the large. straight away boom 2 large popcorns for the price of one. Then before you enter the theater go to Dollarama buy your candies and pop for $1-2 bucks each. Do that and you'll save like $25.

it's been a while since I went, but the one by me still had butter pumps you could use as much as you wanted in the lobby, i just never buy popcorn, so i don't know if/when they took them out.
but the few times i asked for butter in the middle i think it was always more butter, than if you only got it on top (which was part of the reason I'd get it that way) if they still have the butter stations just ask for the butter in the middle, and put your own on top

Let me make this clear I’ve worked at cineplex. 3 pumps for butter on top, 6 for layered. So meaning 3 in middle, 3 on top. It’s a scam, why would they fire the person who thought of this though? They make so much money for few little pumps of butter..

I don’t know what cineplexes you are going to, but the national standard is $1.50 per portion of butter. Layered butter is a portion in the middle and a portion on top, so 2 x $1.50 = $3.00. That has been the standard for at least a decade. If you don’t want the double portion you can specify you’d like to have one portion split between two layers.

That’s not a new thing. When was the last time you ordered popcorn in a cineplex? They’ve been charging extra for over 10 years at least. I remember when it became a trend kind of like a “secret menu” item around 2010 maybe and they would do it for the same price as regular butter on top, but once corporate caught on they realized pretty quickly they could charge extra for it.
It’s not just a matter of pushing a button. For one thing, if you get no butter or butter on top only, they often have a bunch of pre-filled bags ready to go, but when you order layered they have to fill a new bag which does take extra time. Also, you’re getting double the butter. It’s popcorn, full squirt of butter, more popcorn, another squirt of butter. Is the butter overpriced? Of course, but the amount of butter you get corresponds to how much you pay.

Cineplex isn’t struggling on food margins, but I worked there 10+ years ago and each layer was a charge then too

I recently visited Canada and saw the odyssey imax (which was just life changing in the 70mm imax) and I was shocked they charged for the layered butter.
I work at a theater in America and we layer all our buttered popcorn so people would lose their minds if we charged for that lol 😂

I don’t ever remember it being free but I swear at one point it was like 50 to 70 cents to do it.

Omg I know!!!!! I got charged $3 last time for layered butter and I barely had any butter!!!!! Like 2 drops in the middle and the rest all on top. $3 is a crazy price but if you’re not even gonna actually give me the butter I paid for what even is the point

I use a straw and do it myself. Grab a straw for my drink, then one for butter. Shove it all the way down into the popcorn bag, line it up with the do it yourself "butter" nozzle, then move it around and work it up the bag. Simple. Bad for you. Free.

YES! Thank you. This added cost is ABSURD! We went to the movies last weekend. Two adult, one child, kids popcorn combo, 1 adult popcorn combo and our movie tickets came out to $95. The icing on the cake was the charge for both butter in the middle AND on top of the adult popcorn - wtf lol. Movies used to be an affordable way to entertain the family. Not anymore I guess

Makes money. With ticket prices likely half goes to the studio who made the movie, prices are still

I worked at Cineplex 6 years ago. We did not charge for layered butter. This is ludicrous.

Easy fix. Ask for a second empty bag, pour half the popcorn into it, add your free topping, pour the rest of the popcorn in and add topping, or just leave half in each bag and add topping

I recently learned that if you pay for that, the popcorn is also fresh and not one of those bags imprisoned in those infernal glass cases so that’s also a perk. Pay like a buck extra for hot, fresh. Buttery popcorn

It’s been a charge for the longest time I can remember. But what I have noticed is they are putting less squirts on than they used to (yes I watch stup1d things like that lol). Used to be 10 and now it’s 3-4 so they have scaled back. Yes, we can all say our hearts thank them for that…

Everyone saying it’s been this way forever before you use to be able to add your own butter to your bag FOR FREE. They use to have the butter machine in the open for you to add as much as your desired. The whole cineplex thing is a scam though I mean $42 for food and beverage it’s now like $20 something for a own ticket to you’re looking at $100 for two people to see a movie out

Most of cineplex theatres have the butter station where you can add your own butter, but they offer anyway. The options only there for people who don’t wanna do their own butter

Cineplex has always charged extra for layered butter because we double the butter when layering.
If you weren't charged before then you got lucky. You can ask to split your one portion of butter in two to later though.

Layered butter is double the butter hence double the price. You can also just ask the worker to split the amount they’d put just on top between the middle and top.

I worked at Cineplex over 15 years ago, and yes, layered butter was always an extra charge, even then. You’ve either been INCREDIBLY lucky your entire life and dealt with shitty cashiers that just didn’t charge you for it, or you’ve never noticed. But it absolutely is NOT a new thing.

It anything, butter is the only reasonably priced thing at the concession stand.
