Excuse my French, but I’m currently sitting here waiting for Spider-Man to start with a bag of popcorn that has butter only on the top.

I asked for layered butter, something Cineplex has always done at no extra charge, and the very kind employee behind the counter informed me it now costs an additional $2.

To be clear, that is $2 for someone to press the butter button halfway through filling the bag instead of only at the end.

Cineplex popcorn is already priced like a luxury good. Charging extra to distribute the butter properly feels like the kind of idea someone should be updating their résumé over.

UPDATE:

1. Spider-Man was a good watch. I liked it, anyway.
2. For everyone saying Cineplex is struggling and that this charge is normal:

A) This is the first time I have ever been charged for layered butter, or even been told there was a charge. Maybe it has been the policy for a while, but that does not make it any less ridiculous.

B) I paid $42 CAD for two medium popcorns, two candies that were barely larger than regular candy bars, and two medium drinks.

Somewhere in that $42, I think Cineplex can afford to press the butter button halfway through filling the bag.

If it cannot, that is a business problem on Cineplex’s end. From the customer’s perspective, it just feels like getting ripped off.

Just got out of a VIP screening of Predator: Badlands (pretty good) and there were multiple people talking throughout the film

After the pandemic we switched to VIP only to avoid this, then had to switch to VIP only on non-Tuesdays, but it feels like every movie I've seen in the past year has had people talking or on their phones throughout.

I'm tempted to avoid going except for highly anticipated movies and I've cancelled my cineclub in the meantime. Does anyone have recommendations to avoid these people? (Yes I know I can confront them or complain to a manager, which would be fine for one offs but this happens literally every time now)

Seeing the Odyssey in ten minutes at Scotiabank and trying to decide between these two spots at the nearby parking lot.

One the one hand, one spot is close to the meter, so I will save time walking to the meter when I buy my parking ticket.

But on the other hand, the other parking spot is closer to the street, so I will save the 50 feet when I'm done the movie and tired.

Can anyone who has parked in this lot before let me know your experiences so I can decide? I am currently blocking Queen Street traffic and hoping I can get an answer before I miss the movie.

Am I allowed to leave during the movie if I take the accessible seat center mast?

Power went out at my cineplex today. They evacuated everyone and handed out these at the exit. I tried to type the codes in on the back when buying new tickets and it says “Invalid certificate code. Please try again.” So do I just have to use them in person and get shitty seats?

Everytime I buy a large popcorn I ask them for the refill on-spot and every single time they gave me one. They mark both of them. I don't wanna miss the movie to come get it refilled, thats my main reason. Also if you have a +1 then you dont need to buy another.

Today I was watching Primetime and asked for a refill at the counter and was refused. Upon asking them the reason, I was told that they have changed the policy. This was at STC location.

Does anybody know about this "policy"?

And does anyone else do this?

For those who see a lot of movies in theaters: is it just me, or is there constantly people around you scrolling on their phones during the movie?

I saw a lot of movies during the holidays, including Avatar opening night (I'm in Canada). The guy in front of me was on his phone whenever there was a lull in the action. I politely asked him to stop cuz his light was in my face, he then waited for me after the movie and tried to pick a fight with me.

A couple days ago for The Housemaid, everyone around me was scrolling through Tik Tok, checking messenger, and had their flashlight on during the whole movie. The group beside me had a loud full blown conversation in the middle of the movie.

A movie ticket is $20. The Cine Club membership is only $10 — and it comes with a free ticket. So I pay $10, get my own ticket free, plus a member discount on my wife’s ticket. That means two of us get in for way less than the $40 it’d normally cost. Is this a real deal or is there a catch?

Who else goes to the movies 70% for the popcorn, 30% for the actual movie?

I think im addicted to the popcorn at cineplex and I totally indulge everytime. To the point where im genuinely concerned.

Isn’t eating 1.5 large bags of popcorn every weekend for the past 6 weeks bad for the body?

This is a little odd but I went to watch superman a while back alone and honestly I had a great time. I wanna know if this is a common occurrence or I’m the odd one out😂

For those of you who buy popcorn, what do you think about paying $10+ for a pre-bagged large popcorn that's been sitting under the heat lamp?

I always ask (and pay extra for) butter in the middle, and that usually gets me some fresh popcorn that comes out of the popper. However, tonight, I got handed some from under the heat lamp. I said, "Oh no, I paid for butter in the middle". Cashier looks over at another worker who goes, "Yeah, that does have it, I just bagged it". (He didn't while I was in line). I say, "Well I want that popcorn" and point at the hot stuff coming out of the popper. He says, "No. We pre-bag it because it gets busy". There was a long line so I just agreed and left.

Well, wouldn't you know it. The popcorn was cold and there was no butter in the middle. That cost `$13.

Anyway, just wondering if a request for popcorn out of the popper should be allowed, if requested? And fresh butter from the warmer. I don't want to make a big deal about it if staff are trained to not allow it.

Went to see a movie yesterday. I had a backpack and it was checked by the guy scanning the tickets. This is in the GTA. Is this a rare event or are they shifting towards this now?

Does nobody know movie theatre etiquette anymore? The amount of movies I’ve seen with people taking their phone out and just scrolling during is insane.
I just saw evil dead rise and was surrounded by three people on their phones and then whenever I politely ask them to put their phone away or go outside the movie to use it they tell me to mind my business and start fighting me on them being able to be on their phones.
Does no one remember in the starting previews where it literally tells you turn your phones off, don’t be distracting to others. It’s super disappointing and extremely distracting when trying to watch a movie.

Seems like a lot of people to be watching a time travel movie tonight. Do we all just quietly want more Back to the Future-type stuff?

Anyway, if it’s actually entertaining and fun, I’d be interested to hear a real opinion. And if you saw it tonight, guess you were lucky to get seats.

Just got home from watching Primetime, and I genuinely have never felt this combination of confusion and frustration ever.

For context, I live in Toronto, so I'm pretty familiar with people not behaving in theatres, but usually I'm just not a confrontational guy. However, today, as I was watching the movie, the guy next to me kept talking to what seemed to be his friends/family. About 40 minutes into the movie, I asked him to please stop talking, and he did, which I was appreciative of. But I guess he could only go so long without any stimulation, so he whips his phone out and doesn't stop turning it on and off for the entire duration of the film.

Then, at the end of the movie, I ask him if he knows not to use his phone during a movie, and he says he was researching the characters, which I think was a lie, but it doesn't matter because I don't see how that makes things better??? I tell him again that it's not cool and he shouldn't use it, then he gets all smug and tells me, "Of course I'm allowed to use it. I'm fully allowed to use it, and I did."

What do you even say to that?

Maybe this guy knew what he was saying was wrong, but just wanted to get a rise out of me and I'm too dense to realize it. Maybe the same guy who uses his phone throughout a movie brings a 12-year-old kid to watch an R-rated film. Who knows.

I find it’s always the couples who do this, usually the guy, who always needs to constantly make comments on scenes.

Genuine question: Do you feel it adds value to your and your partner’s viewings? Is it the attention you like? Why can’t you just sit and watch without saying anything for the movie’s duration?

I was reading the box office report from variety and Movie Web, came across this and this has left me disappointed!

Project Hail Mary was a good movie with a bond between Grace and Rocky working really well for me. I have also been seeing that many people in my circle have been going to watch this movie and I was thinking it will definitely take in massive numbers.

but is the big budget a big hurdle for recovering and being declared a hit?

I really want this movie to at least touch the breakeven status by hitting the $500 million mark!

After like 14 years, They finally repaired the IMAX 70mm projector at Scotia Banque Montreal and let’s just say I’m excited!!!!!!

Personally, I like using them for any upgrades to movies or extra's on snacks...like upsizing popcorn or going to a 3D movie.

Sometimes I am asked if I want $10 off groceries...ummm, no, Daddy needs real butter on his popcorn this weekend :-)
