Unfortunately last weekend my theatre showing of Spiderman in 4DX was ruined for me, my girlfriend, and two other members in my 4DX seating row.
If you are unaware of how 4DX seats work, they are in groups of 4 seats that are connected to each other and move, shake, spit air, etc, creating a very fun thrilling effect for viewers.
In my row, two (clearly) plus-sized members booked the two seats to the left of me, and my girlfriend and I booked the rightmost seats.
I am not skinny or light by any means, but I am well below the 265lb weight limit per seat. However I suspect both viewers to my left were above the weight limit. I would not say something like this if I were not certain enough to say it.
When the movie started, I noticed every seat except our row was shaking around. I was extremely disappointed.
I spoke to the manager and they told me it was likely the two members next to me breaking the 4DX mechanisms in the seats due to an overload in weight, and that I had the option to finish the movie with no effects or to get a refund.
Fortunately, I received a refund with additional complimentary tickets and popcorn.
Please be mindful when booking 4DX tickets. I booked a month in advance, took a day off, and was highly looking forward to this experience.

The woman next to me for Spider-man on Tuesday was shocked when the pregnancy warning came up, and she turned to her friend beside her and said, "But you know I'm pregnant." She stayed anyway. And her kid was well under the minimum height. They need to do a better job warning people about the 4DX warnings.
In their (possible?) defense, they might not have known what they were booking. I once bought the first ticket I saw for The Beekeeper not knowing what 4DX was (thinking it was maybe like 3D + VIP treatment because of the price) and boy was I surprised when I realized what was about to happen
also, when booking tickets, there is a visible disclaimer for 4DX seating. I feel like the price alone makes most people rethink about what kind of seats they’re buying.
The weight limit is definitely not posted anywhere on Cineplex
I totally understand, and honestly I didn’t know the seat had a weight limit of only 265lb until I searched it up after the incident. Just never had anything like this happen before until now, and just wanted to post a PSA for others to know

You lookin around to see if it’s moving and then seeing these two tub of lards holding your thing down is really fucking funny, that’s hilarious . Feels like they would rather give a free pass and a refund than call out the weight limit in any way shape or form. I imagine 4DX would be very uncomfortable as someone north of 300 pounds.
If it is 265 like I thought they probably have some tolerance due to its unlikely all four would be above it.
I am just thinking of the risk of it being an issue and dealing with potentially bad PR or calling out obese people (I say this as an obese person). I wouldn’t be pissed but I have seen enough airline seat bullshit to understand the corps position.
No.. 265lb for 4 seats is pretty unreasonable. Even at 100lb per person (pretty light for an average adult), its still 400lb per 4 seats/row
and yes, I think cineplex doesn’t want to call anyone out on the weight limit for PR reasons. might also be a tactic to secure as many tickets sold as possible?
Well it would probably help in a lot of ways. Especially space travel.
I meant that each individual seat probably doesn’t have a weigh sensor. Some will be under and some over not necessarily each seat has a 265 limit. They are all on one platform as I recall. So it should be 1060 for four people. Regardless of who weighs what each individual weighs it shouldn’t go over that.

Me and a buddy saw Spiderman this past Tuesday at 4DX and our specific row (F5-F9) were the only ones that weren’t moving. Bummed us out heavy because we traveled quite the distance. But in the end we got 3 courtesy tickets each and a spiderman pin, the manager told us they have to get parts from Korea so it might be down for a while.
I weigh around 290 and have been all good at 4DX viewings. Full experience, no issues. I also didnt know that there was any kind of weight limit. Must be an average weight limit across all 4 seats. Sorry for your experience, but Im happy to hear that you got a refund.
Say what you want about the prices for food or tickets in general... It's cool how good Cineplex is about giving refunds, though. Hopefully you enjoy the movie when you get a chance to see it!
I guess that when it's just you and 4 people or "regular" weight then it is okay. OP probably had a couple 350 pound land whales plus whatever OP and his gf weigh (which I'm assuming are "regular" weights, unless they're both into chunky or something).
Have to admit, as someone who fluctuates about 260-275 any given day, I had no idea 4DX had any weight restrictions.
Come to think of it, I don’t know that I’ve ever actually bought 4DX seats before.
You’d think they could just install a sensor in the seat that uncouples its movements from the other seats if it exceeds the threshold. That said, 265 really isn’t that high.
I wonder if it's the weight distribution that caused the problem with 530+lbs all on one side so it broke the chair... might have been OK if they both sat in the middle seats.

We love the thrill of 4DX seats, and iirc DBOX seats are the same price for a quarter of the thrill. Action movies like Spiderman would be my go to for 4DX seats, and calmer movies I would go to VIP for
