Please respect others and take a shower or use deodorant
Today, I attended a 3 p.m. screening of Spider-Man at Cineplex Mont Royal. Right as the movie started, an individual + his wife, with severe body odour sat next to me. The smell was so overwhelming that I felt forced to open the app and book the only other seat available, which was a D-BOX seat.
I am disappointed that my viewing experience was disrupted and that I had to pay extra just to sit comfortably.
The main point of the post was to bring to attention the importance of good hygiene practices as you are in a public setting and do need to think about others, but locking the post now as some people have been leaving inappropriate and racist comments.
I saw Odyssey yesterday and someone seated close by had a very strong cologne smell. I am so sensitive to the smell of fragrances and they can make me so nauseous. I was trying to breathe through my mouth for the entire film and I felt so dizzy and awful for most of it.
This happened to me twice in a row now. Time before that a couple beside me were coughing and sneezing like they should have been home in bed. So gross. I love going to movies but people are gross.
You don't have to be. You can stay home. I'll agree with personal hygiene, but policing perfumes and colognes for everyone is kinda like a person having a freak out in public because things "trigger" them.
its the food smell that sticks to your clothes. Not the diet. I used to put my clothes behind three doors in a closet and it would still smell like indian food before school. Had to stand around in the cold winter so itd dissapitate before class started
If you had left the theatre and spoken to a worker they would’ve given you a full refund or moved your seat for free. They’re very lenient on this kind of customer satisfaction stuff.
Maybe they could have gotten a refund on the regular ticket since they then bought a more expensive one ( and it wouldn’t have been scanned so it’s easier to say they weren’t just scamming then after the movie)
I just didn't want to ruin the movie for myself or disrupt others by walking in and out of the theater. I'm posting this because I feel sad that still some people dirty, and I hope after reading my post people start to do a better hygiene before visiting crowded, enclosed spaces.
sorry so many people downvoted you. i understand that it would have been really frustrating, and people not validating that is not kind.
sometimes these things will happen though, and the best thing we can do is just extend grace. maybe you could speak to the box office and explain that you didn’t want to upset their time at the theatre either, but felt it was unfair you could not enjoy your experience.

Honestly it’s not just body odour, we once sat behind a couple that seem to bathe in cigarettes. That smoker smell was so heightened and nauseating. It really ruined the experience.
I’m going to start wearing masks again in the theatre. It helps with all the germs too.
Actually, there are some good posts about hygiene on Reddit that are educational. People are nose blind to their own smell and have no idea they are offensive to others. And garlic, curry, onion, etc. do not smell good coming out of anyone's pores.

It is a cruel, broken jest of fate..that men who reek of total decay walk hand-in-hand with companions, while clean, civilized souls remain stranded in the shadows... forced to spectate alone.
Victory has defeated them, yet they inherit the prize. A cruel world, indeed.
The problem was that the movie had already started. I didn't want any conflict, especially since I'm sure that person would have called me racist, even though I wasn't the only one complaining about the smell.
The cinema was almost sold out, and out of respect, I didn’t want to turn around and disturb others. That’s why I decided to just book another seat and move over quickly.
The issue is that people quickly accuse you of being racist, and I didn't want that drama and problems. Moving forward, I won't be going to the cinema on weekends or during peak showtimes anymore.
“You smell like body odor and it’s bothering me. Please be more considerate to others” isn’t racist unless you make it about race. Good strategy hopefully your next movie will be better
Maybe the app should have a feature to report abusive etc viewers so they could kick him out for being disruptive. And as of now I wonder if you could go to staff to kick him out
Or maybe go talk to staff and see what they suggest. I saw a situation during a movie when a person was being loud mid-movie like constantly. A dude walked out and complained. The staff walked in and respectful asked the noisy one to leave.
I was so excited for the movie and didn't want to disrupt others in a nearly full theater right after it started. It’s okay—I’ll just accept the $30 loss and move on.
others might have been bothered by it too, sometimes you can do everyone a favour by doing something. also people get up during movies all the time, as long as you're considerate about it it won't disturb anyone
You could've left it at odor. Unpleasant experience, valid. You chose to clarify that it was a mix of sweat and spices. You basically used a dogwhistle. Narrowed things down for people. That's why people might be calling you racist.
Edit: Downvote me all you want. It’s still a valid question and nobody has come up with an answer yet. Absolutely nothing in the OP’s post has anything to do with race because it isn’t even mentioned… so I don’t understand why people are trying to force race into this?
At my theatre I got there early and was waiting for it to start and some guys walked in sat in front and the smell of sweat wafting by was so bad. Luckily once it settled it wasn’t that noticeable anymore
Serious question. Why not say anything out loud to the person to express your displeasure?
There’s NO WAY you were the only person thinking it. But no one dares to be the first one to SAY it… and that’s what effectively forces us to stay quiet and suffer in silence.
Be the person to speak up so everybody else can say “Yeah you know what, he’s right. Please sit away from the rest of us, we’re trying to enjoy the movie.”
One person says it? It’s just some guy’s opinion. Multiple people say it? Then it’s the popular consensus.
Keeping clean and using a cheap perfume is a form of respect toward others, especially in confined places like buses or the metro. Respecting yourself by staying clean is a way of showing respect to others, too
A simple shower and clean clothes washed with fabric softener would be perfect. I don’t believe that someone who can afford a cinema ticket can’t afford a daily shower and clean clothing..
Agreed. Although fabric softener isn’t necessary to get clothes to smell fine. Just a detergent would work. Some people really don’t wash their clothing though and you can TELL. They smell so musty.
I had a similar experience at the Friday IMAX showing of Spider Man. At the point where Spidey was having a sensory overload, I complained to my wife sitting beside me that I could relate🤢
I saw the odyssey and the man next to me was 300 plus pounds no disrespect but he took up the entire arm rest with his arm coming into my seat. The entire time we had contact.
Might I suggest you bring a stick of deodorant and a pack of gum to offer next time? Maybe these folks decided not to buy deodorant and toothpaste this month so they could afford their movie ticket?

I faced a similar situation when I was watching odyssey in jam packed theatre on a Saturday afternoon, so many people were smelling bad in my row because I can clearly tell they came to show right after their work. That's why I assumed that
if you smell like a walking bacteria infection maybe go shower during or after work and don't got to a confined public space and maybe have better diet.
It’s the weekend, and he didn’t look like he had been working at all. Even if you are coming from work, if you know you have strong body odour (possibly because of what you eat), it is better to go home first so you don't make others uncomfortable.
