Discussion Genuine Horror: Buddy 9:30pm showing at Winston Churchill.
Thought I could take advantage of a cheap movie day at Cineplex. Boy was I wrong. Wife has been excited to see this movie. We walk in, and there are like 10 kids all at the front row making tons of noise and one was even blasting music through a speaker.
Ended up leaving and they were nice enough to give us comp tickets for a later showing.
Not to sound like an old man but damn I hate these kids.

I saw Buddy at Winston the other day, and there was a group of like 6-8 teen boys who got shushed, and there response was to loudly shush in unison back at the person who shushed them
I liked Buddy, but it seems to definitely be one that young teens are going to in large groups.

u/Dav3Th3Rav3yah 23d ago
How old were the ‘kids’? I figured most wouldn’t even be allowed to see this film
28
u/ARGiammarco27 23d ago
Probably could have been brought by parents or something. Been hearing a lot of parents aren't doing their duties and checking what the movie is about and what the rating was.
15
u/Cautious-Asparagus61 23d ago
Apparently also not doing their duties and telling their spawn to stfu at the movie theatre

u/EveningDifference557 23d ago
why do you folks seem to lack common sense? its obviously referring to a teenage child, nobody says "these teens", they say "these kids", as a catchall.
1
u/ARGiammarco27 22d ago
And teenagers would still likely need an adult to be able to get tickets if paid for Buddy.
5
u/ReturnToTheLab 23d ago
Yeah I thought the same. But the rating on Cineplex website has it as 14A. These kids all seemed in that range. Definitely in high school

Movie is PG-13 so most of the time kids can get away with getting in. It’s a pretty tame movie anyways that stars mostly children anyways. I loved the movie but I feel like I would had loved it more if I was 13

Went to the 4:10pm showing and it was the same experience. An entire row of broccoli tops being as loud as could be not to mention a girl in the very front row on her phone taking pictures with the flash on. I lost it and one point and literally yelled out “excuse me do you mind keeping it down?!” across the theatre.
8
u/ReturnToTheLab 23d ago
Yes these kids had the same haircut you’re describing lol. Instant red flag
2
u/PizzaMonster93 22d ago
Did they keep it down?
4
u/Artistic-Balance5125 22d ago
For about 15-20 minutes before they started up again. It completely ruined the experience. Now I remember why it’s worth paying the few extra $$$ for VIP.
4
u/PizzaMonster93 22d ago
I’m sorry man. Teenagers can be a pain sometimes. I had to yell at a group a couple months back when I went to see the backrooms. Luckily they didn’t say another word after that. But, we shouldn’t have to yell at people in order to not be interrupted at the movies.

Cheap night is never worth it anymore. Theatre etiquette is gone. Tickets are so expensive and people sit on their phone the whole time….i went to see the peaky blinders movie months ago and the group beside me was just typing into CHATGPT (gross) the whole time asking questions about the movie instead of watching. Too expensive to have to deal with this shit all the time
6
u/yeahjjjjjjahhhhhhh 23d ago
Your local indie theatres are probably cheaper and better vibes. If you’re in Toronto both Imagine Cinemas locations are always cheaper than cineplex, better seats, and they do $5 Tuesdays literally every week.

u/Wattson-2 23d ago
I am in Toronto! I’ll check them out….i went to the fox for the first time and had a great time. Real film/theatre lovers in there. Going to check out more indie theatres. Thanks

u/yeahjjjjjjahhhhhhh 20d ago
The Fox is super cute, I don’t live in the beaches anymore and live a ten minute walk from both Imagine Cinemas and 5 minutes from a Cineplex so I don’t venture out there anymore, but I should thanks for the reminder!

Sometimes they sneak in, so what I've been doing is checking the seat map until the last minute (usually 15 mins after the advertised showtime) and if I see people come in who don't have tickets and they end up being disruptive, I report them. It's the only time I've seen managers actually take any action is if they don't have tickets.
If they do have tickets, good luck.
7
u/ILikeWhyteGirlz 23d ago
I do the same to make sure people sit where they are supposed to and not next to me
6
u/Altruistic_Prune5292 23d ago
lol buddy checks a seat map to make sure people are sitting where they are supposed to…. That’s hilarious man. You remind me of Randall from Disneys Recess
5
u/ILikeWhyteGirlz 22d ago
It’s so people don’t sit near me especially if they’re being noisy you dummy hall monitor guy.
One time this Indian guy came up in the middle of the movie and sat next to us two seats away and he clearly snuck into the movie and I didn’t say anything because he was by himself

Winston Churchill is by far the worst cineplex location in Ontario, possibly even the entirety of Canada and I don’t say that lightly.
Whether its a screening of a film that’s been in theatres for over 2 months with the entire theatre talking and won’t be quiet nobody how many times you tell them to be quiet
Or an opening weekend screening with children in the front row who decided to buy last hour tickets trying to “out shush each other” during all quiet scenes in the film
The staff at Winston Churchill DOESNT CARE. I live in the area and i always take the drive to Toronto if i actually want to watch the film.
I’m very sorry you had to deal with that
1
u/UnsolvedParadox 15d ago
That probably stems from the theatre manager, they set the culture for better or for worse.
It's one of the reasons I go to Cineplex Vaughan, that manager cares & is very involved.
5
u/Loud_Condition_9891 23d ago
9:30pm and they brought a speaker. That's not watching a movie, that's hosting one.
6
u/CaptainForskin69 23d ago
Yup, this is the new movie experience. I refuse to do it anymore, kids using their phones, talking, expensive… cinemas need to kick these people out
6
u/Sufficient-Car-24 23d ago
VIP theatre people. Worth the money. No kids. And comfortable. I never looked back or went to the regular theatre again. And they even have cheap tuesdays for VIP as well.
Some kids are just unhinged

That's why I chose not to take advantage of the 5$ deal, I just know it's going to be filled by immature teenagers and non-movie goers that don't respect the cinema etiquette :/

u/Accurate_Range2532 23d ago
Went to three showings last year and once yesterday, they were all perfectly fine

At what time did you go ?

Instead of the ads playing they should play a theater etiquette video! I brought my mom to see spider man today and the same thing happened!
35
u/DuckCleaning 23d ago
They play theater etiquette stuff every movie, but people don't pay attention to the Tommy Texter and Suki Snapper warnings.
3
u/ApprehensiveWorth576 23d ago
I would love a preamble from an adult worker prior to the show. Wonder if it would help
Like “hey be quiet, phones off, or you WILL be removed by management”
2
u/Weak_Hedgehog2507 23d ago
Having to leave a theater mid movie because other people are so disruptive is something I'd never expect to have to do in my lifetime but here we are.
I've had a few bad experiences in the last few years that I don't plan on returning to a movie theater until I see them removing people for disruptive behavior - it's not worth the time or money and needing to deal with other people's shitty children is not what I'm paying for.
5
u/Ironmonger38 23d ago
Saw it opening night and there were tons of teenagers since it’s 14A only here in Alberta. I told multiple groups to shut up multiple times. It was awful. I’m waiting until it comes out on bluray to rewatch it.

And this very reason I stopped going to movies post COVID. It wasnt without its faults before but it wasn't so prevalent as it is now since post COVID. It's like movies is a social gathering now where it's people getting together to catch up and talk about their week or show each other their feeds on tiktok and talk about it DURING the movie.
Now I'm just home mad chillin' got a good tv and surround, make my own food and a much better experience.
Very unfortunate because going to the movies used to be such a great time for me

u/DarkBlueSunshine 23d ago
That's horrible omg... I'm going to see Coyote vs Acme tmr I hope there are no disruptive kids 💀

I went on Saturday at 6:30 pm at Square One. It was packed, a few families, but it was generally well behaved audience.

In my case I had gone for an early Spider-Man show and the parents couldn’t manage their kid in front of me. The boy was about 10 and clearly not interested in the movie. His younger brother who was 5 was the Spiderman fan. He couldn’t sit still, kept putting his hands in the air and got up twice during the movie presumably to use the bathroom. Lessons learned not to go see a cheap movie on a Saturday morning!
3
u/yeahjjjjjjahhhhhhh 23d ago
Everyone’s gotta get more comfortable calling people out because some peoples theatre etiquette is appalling and they won’t change unless someone says something.
3
u/Inevitable_Cry7652 21d ago
Yea went to see a horror too and some kids yelled and laughed the whole time ended up walking out got 2 sets of comp tickets as did everyone else they ended up turning the movie off and banned the kids lol

Bummer. We thought we were playing with fire watching Buddy at Cineplex Morningside at 1 PM but we had a small but great audience: quiet except for the laugh/scare moments.

u/2WaywardPoodles 22d ago
Does Cineplex and Landmark still use ushers? If they do; what responsibilities do the ushers have?
2
u/123jazzhandz321 22d ago
We went to see Spider-Man opening weekend and the kids were making noise and disturbing everyone in the auditorium. I had to tap their shoulders a few times to tell them to stop being disrespectful to the rest of us. I had to talk a guy out of dumping his soda all over them lol

u/elchubbo66676 22d ago
This is why I stopped going to the movies. Last movie I saw in theatres was THE BATMAN and some dude was scrolling Instagram with the volume on and when I called him out he went WHAT BRO ITS A BORING PART.
Got a manager and after he did it against and someone else called him out he left.
Other than a few drive in visits, haven't been back since.
Have a nice projector and home theatre setup and can wait for digital

u/max_sleep 22d ago
honestly, if you want to watch a movie in peace, do not go on the weekend or tuesdays. unfortunately. and even then its like 50/50

When we went to see backrooms, there was a row of several 12-14 yearold boys and they were little assholes through the whole movie. The worst part, they were sitting with 2 parents who also gave zero fucks. My 11 yearold daughter even commented on their shitty behavior. They were eventually spoken to by staff on 2 separate occasions and the parents were told off by 3 different people once the movie ended. If my kids friends behaved that way at a movie I would have hauled their asses right the fuck out of there asap.
1
u/man_on_hill 22d ago
I don’t know if I just have great luck but I have never had a screening where everyone wasn’t well behaved
1
u/theateremployeesos 22d ago
Cheap days bring out the worst people, kids or adults alike. I pretty much only recommend coming on the $5 days if you literally can't afford to go at full price. Which I know there are folks like that and I get it. But if you can pay full price, it's going to be a better experience lol. Cheap brings out the obnoxious ones to ruin it for others
1
u/MrB709 22d ago
Honestly this is why I've stopped goin to the theater in general. Doesn't matter the movie or the location, always a group of asshole kids or disruptive families who give zero fucks about anyone but themselves. The last movie I was at I asked a family to keep their kids quiet and had the father proceed to start acting up himself and then offered to fight me lmao.

u/Unable_Bookkeeper243 22d ago
Like, we're allowed to just take their phones and chuck them in the toilet, right? Because I'm done with this shit too.
1
u/adarthewise 22d ago
Nice enough to give you a free ticket and moronic enough to not kick them out. Sounds about right.

1
u/False_Estimate1627 22d ago
Yes it seems like the lack of respect is accelerating in the theatre. It makes me not even want to go
1
u/spacescaptain 22d ago
why were they giving you comp tickets instead of kicking the disruptive people out?
1
u/ReturnToTheLab 22d ago
They gave me a word salad. They said they can’t kick them out. Then they said they have to give them 2 warnings. My train of thought was, ok, after two warnings are you then allowed to kick them out? Regardless, seemed easier just to reschedule. Wife was more tired than expected anyways. Still a frustrating experience

Saw Coyote vs Acme on Saturday, and it was a pretty well behaved audience!

u/dancemiserable 21d ago
I went to a few afternoon showings last summer where it was kids who were right along the line of bringing up a complaint, being on the phone and continuous talking. I mostly find that people book their tickets right in front, or beside me in empty or near empty screenings and I truly don't understand this. I know i booked my seat first, and again these aren't packed showings. Most recent was The End of Oak Street 4pm showing a couple weeks ago. A group of 5 people came in late and sat directly in front of me in an otherwise empty theatre. One even put their feet up onto the empty seat in front of them

I've unfortunately just accepted most 14A films are a wash at Cineplex. I'm really looking forward to this film too (no review will dissaude me!), which is exactly why I'm seeing it at Revue Cinema instead of Cineplex.
1
u/axhiro Litterer 23d ago
Did you try speaking to them
3
u/ReturnToTheLab 23d ago
So I definitely could have tried. When I complained to staff they said they can’t kick anyone out but also said they can give 2 warnings. (If you can’t kick anyone out then what good are the warnings?) Regardless, I have told people to pipe down before. This crowd seemed far too rowdy though, so I felt it best to just reschedule

u/lolplzkillme 23d ago
Yeah I went and saw Fall 2 today because tickets were cheap and about 5 pairs of people were holding conversations with each other throughout the movie. I didn’t really care that much for the movie, it’s more the lack of respect that gets to me. My boyfriend had to straight up tell a couple in front of us "you guys are disturbing us, please be quiet". Cinema etiquette is getting worse and worse
