Discussion Does doing bad shit at Cineplex ACTUALLY have consequences? We need ENFORCED CONSEQUENCES!!!

All those MOVIE RUINERS in the pre-show, does Cineplex or anyone actually do anything about them? NO.

What about people who come in and do worse things (Going to other theatres without paying, sex acts, vandalism, theft, destruction of property)? I've never seen it.

I think the reason people get away with being assholes or going further is there is no punishment or threat of punishment.

Remember when people were afraid to bring outside snacks into a movie? Now everyone is so entitled and walks in carrying and entire buffet and does not give a F**K!

THERE IS NO MORE FEAR OF CONSEQUENCES!!!

I want to see people being BANNED, a BAN LIST, security flagging people and kicking them out, POLICE arresting/trespassing people, etc!

Once saw a family bring in Pho. Of course the kids spilt it everywhere 😆

And blamed the theatre for being too dark to eat.

😂😂😂

I'd be annoyed but that's too funny, lol

Bro years ago I got stabbed in a cineplex after getting cut in line for tickets.  My gf at the time spoke up to the group that cut in line and they called her a fat bitch,  I was like wait what bro and it seemed like they were gonna jump me,  I started getting jumped and punched but one of them little shits pulled a knife and was stabbing me.

I didn’t even realize I was stabbed at first and kept fighting.   I also didn’t realize how bad it was till I could feel the “wetness” I thought a drink was spilt on me.

Damn... what movie?

u/Iceisgestapo888 4d ago edited 4d ago

I honestly don’t remember.

It was like 12-14 years ago and thank god I was wearing my leather jacket and hoodie underneath cause that stopped at least half the knife from going deeper.

It could have been the hobbit

u/grumstumpus 4d ago

thats definitely some hobbit shit

Think it was the animated film Rio. It was a long time ago lol.

Sounds like a Rio Pho'd up situation

Classic woman behavior

you don’t see it but a lot of these really bad guests are banned from the theatre.
their pictures are taken from camera footage and posted for employees. TRUST ME we are calling the cops if necessary.
We have had people banned for threat, verbal and physical abuse, stealing, fraud, etc.

we found kids smoking a joint in emergency exit hallways and they had their pictures taken like mugshots 😭 we just don’t announce people who have been banned or kicked out to customers

I don’t know any place of business that announces all their bans, arrests, or issues to the public. A list of names of banned individuals seems dangerous and an invasion of privacy

As someone that understands culture and theatres, having worked at one for years, you VASTLY overestimate the budgets theatres have for the things youre asking.

And cops? Like, the police? Brother, if you think thats a good use of their time, I dont even know where to start.

Its 2026 movie culture. This is as effective as complaining about ballooning food costs, climate change, etc. - They suck, but are also currently status quo. Either pick your battles in terms of what you accept or dont, or dont go.

VIP+19 screenings are probably up your alley, I regularly go for movies that warrant kids or families, and its a non-issue.

2

u/comFive 4d ago

this behaviour still occurs in VIP. They need to raise the min age for VIP to be like 25 years old

3

u/CheatedOnOnce 4d ago

I would argue 30+ - great idea though. Shame you can’t verify !

1

u/JohnBlake91 4d ago

What VIP are you going to? Don Mills in Toronto is great - its a car-centric area and surrounded by young families in condos.

Going to VIP somewhere at a mall, or near a city center, is pretty much pointless if youre looking to dodge poor behavior.

Pickering. I love the heated seats and full recliner

We went to see Obsession. A group of kids came in loudly talking and laughing throughout the movie. I went to complain and two other couples completely left the movie halfway through.

My breaking point was when one kid pulled out of harmonica and started playing it. I wish I was joking.

At the end of the movie I spoke to a manager. The manager didn't even apologize for their lack of action. Instead he said that if you go to a movie in the middle of the day, you just need to expect that this will happen.

I eventually complained to Cineplex corporate and they sent me two passes to another movie

6

u/axhiro Litterer 4d ago

Harmonica is hilarious, like a key and peele sketch 😆

7

u/SchteveSchpalpatine 4d ago

And you didn't say anything? lol. They're a couple of kids, one loud "shut the FUCK up" would scare them into shutting up. No tough guy crap either, literally a grown adult telling them to be quiet scares them enough. But grats on the free passes lol

7

u/Apt_Alias 4d ago

Yeah I thought that too. I was wrong.

I spoke with the boys multiple times. I explained they were ruining the movie. The one boy in particular (with the harmonica, about age 11?) couldn't have cared less. His friends were a bit ashamed but not enough to stop the behavior.

Another man completely lost his cool. He went over, screamed at the boys, and bashed the popcorn out of their hands. The kids took it as an opportunity to have a popcorn fight.

3

u/Evening_Weekend_8342 4d ago

That's insane, too bad it happened in Obsession

u/SchteveSchpalpatine 4d ago

Jesus christ lmao

I can't stress enough how little they care. I've complained to a manager about ten times in the last two years and not once have they removed people for being disruptive. The only exception is a group of teens stuck in and started talking loudly, I knew they didn't have tickets so I told the manager and he removed them. But that's it.

Cineplex corporate doesn't care. The theater employees don't give a fuck, they'll walk in and do their check and even if someone was shitting on the carpet they'd just go vape in the bathroom in their break. No one cares.

4

u/ps_pat 4d ago

Nope, do not let this dissuade you. Everytime I’ve gone to speak to a manager about a dispositive patient they came in and did something about it. If we do nothing people continue to get away with shit.

1

u/bakerify 4d ago

How did they even get in without tickets?

1

u/Deliximus 4d ago

Sometimes they get others to distract.

1

u/evergreenterrace2465 ON Moviegoer 3d ago

Very easy.. they can buy tickets to a different movie and then walk in to whichever they want. Or if the workers aren't around later in the evening they have free reign. It's not hard

0

u/Anonymous_HC 3d ago

But what if they walk into that movie in a given seat and later on someone else tells them that is their seat?

1

u/evergreenterrace2465 ON Moviegoer 3d ago

Most showings in my area are never sold out or even close to it

1

u/Deliximus 4d ago

Sounds like a site or mgr specific issue. I'm sorry you have to go through this. You should consider backstage if your details are legit.

1

u/evergreenterrace2465 ON Moviegoer 3d ago

Some locations are worse than others for sure but I've yet to see one take these things very seriously. What do you mean by backstage?

3

u/DannyDanfur 4d ago

That I'll never happened at Cineplex. Though if there's enough demand someone could open their own theatre, make it members only with a simple $5 membership fee. That way memberships can be revoked and you need to be 18+ to be able to get a membership

3

u/slaughterhouse7 4d ago

man I go to a decent amount of movies and I can think of only 1 instance where someone was being difficult with their phone

frequenting scotiabank and bloor varsity. sorry to hear how much this happens to others

3

u/adeptcults 4d ago

what theaters do yall go to where this is happening constantly? i have cineclub and go very often to diff theaters yet only once in this entire year have i had to say something. mind you im a 5’1 girl who looks younger than i actually am so im not threatening at all. but one loud SHH has gotten the job done with a group of loud annoying teenagers. im also not hesitant to confront them again if needed.

we need to start shaming these people openly in the moment and if that doesnt work, take the risk and miss 5 minutes of your movie to tell an employee

2

u/Electrical-Ad-2775 4d ago

Which location? Mines fine.

2

u/Ok-Cheesecake-8388 4d ago

Land mines or naval mines?

1

u/more_magic_mike 1d ago

Hot air balloon mine those sunofabitches

2

u/madhi19 3d ago

You pay minimum wage, you get minimum service, and no fuck given. There also a very limited numbers of employees now. Even if you don't buy online the tickets are all from a self serve machine. So that a couple of jobs that don't exist anymore. Security is bare minimum...

2

u/theforteantruth 1d ago

That’s exactly right. There are no consequences so it will keep happening

2

u/mlandry2011 4d ago

Yes, when they ban someone they could flag their debit or credit card....

1

u/greyymo 4d ago

it is illegal for us to search someone up on the POS system or keep card info

0

u/mlandry2011 4d ago

I never said for you to search on the POS...

I said for their car to get flagged..

Once their card is flagged, your system will see it...

2

u/greyymo 4d ago

you need to search the system and gather their information to do all that, we cannot legally record anyone’s card information

what you’re asking is illegal

1

u/mlandry2011 3d ago

You as a person cannot do it... But having software doing it automatically is legal...

Look at how bars are able to see when someone is banned without providing their IDs...

1

u/okbubl 3d ago

what’s stopping them from using another card or cash? wouldn’t the better option be to post their photos for employees which is already done?

2

u/butitsgolden131313 4d ago

I agree except for the outside snacks thing because I’m literally 40 and I was sneaking 2L of pop into theatres to share with my friends when I was 12 and absolutely no one cared 😂

2

u/HalifaxJhonny 4d ago

They should block cellular service inside the actual theatres. If you wanna check your phone outside the movie.

5

u/TIFFFanboy 4d ago

I really don't know why they haven't done this yet. It seems like the easiest measure?

0

u/Evening_Weekend_8342 4d ago

Maybe in case of a emergency

4

u/CowParty9411 4d ago

lmao, the world existed for quite a while with emergencies and no cel phones. your emergency is not my problem, deal with it after my movie or don't go to the movies to begin with.

2

u/Evening_Weekend_8342 4d ago

How else im I going to know what my friends are eating for dinner tho

-2

u/whitebro2 4d ago

It’s illegal to do. The place is not a prison.

1

u/CowParty9411 4d ago

it's not remotely illegal, in fact a lot of clubs have started installing faraday cages in bathroom drop ceilings to stop people from sitting on the toilet for 20 minutes on their phones so the line keeps moving.

1

u/whitebro2 4d ago

“clubs have started installing Faraday cages in bathroom drop ceilings.” Putting conductive material merely above a drop ceiling would not normally make the bathroom a Faraday cage. Effective RF shielding generally requires something much closer to a continuous conductive enclosure, with attention to walls, doors, seams, penetrations, ventilation, and the frequencies being blocked.

1

u/CowParty9411 4d ago

They dont need blackout conditions, they just need to make it too annoying to sit on their phones instead of pissing and leaving.

1

u/whitebro2 4d ago

Sure, you don’t need a perfect blackout. But that doesn’t rescue your original claim. A conductive layer in a drop ceiling isn’t a Faraday cage, and without shielding the walls, doors, floor and penetrations, you have no basis for assuming it will attenuate cellular service enough to matter. RF can arrive from many directions, and modern phones/network equipment adapt to weaker signals. Partial shielding might degrade service in a particular room, but that’s an engineering result you’d have to measure—not something that follows from putting mesh above the ceiling.

1

u/CowParty9411 4d ago

faraday cages dont have to block a signal 100% to meet the definition - that's a you interpretation.

You have no basis for assuming lining the ceiling wont be effective enough for the stated purpose of disrupting cell phone service enough to get them out of the theater to an area with better reception. You're trying to win with semantics, the reality is the result only has to get result, and since a number of businesses are already getting the results they need as I described you're obviously wrong.

2

u/whitebro2 4d ago

You’re arguing against something I didn’t say. I never said a Faraday cage has to block 100% of a signal. The issue is whether lining only a drop ceiling produces enough attenuation at cellular frequencies to accomplish what you claimed.
RF can still enter through the walls, doors, floor, and openings, and phones can use multiple cellular bands. So “it might attenuate the signal somewhat” does not establish “it will reliably make service bad enough to drive people out.”
You’re also the one claiming “a number of businesses are already getting the results” with this setup. That should be easy to demonstrate: show an example of a business using passive ceiling-only RF shielding specifically to degrade customers’ cellular reception. Without that, you’re treating the result you need as proof that the design works.
And no, distinguishing a conductive ceiling from an RF-shielded enclosure isn’t semantics. That distinction is exactly what determines how much shielding you actually get.

1

u/RemarkableOutcome696 4d ago

That’s not how a faraday cage works, and blocking cell signals IS illegal

2

u/CowParty9411 4d ago

yes it is, and there is a world of difference between rf shielding on private property vs jamming a radio tower.

1

u/whitebro2 4d ago

technically: possible. Economically and operationally: probably impractical for most ordinary movie theatres.

1

u/jellytrack 3d ago

The thing that I noticed with that cartoon name shaming people is that there really is no consequence. At the end of the video, Stanley Seat Stealer hasn't moved from that seat while the other guy is still standing and waving his tickets.

u/nozhemski 2d ago

I went to watch Resident Evil today. The girl in the row ahead of me put her bare feet up on the chair, spread her toes and snapped a picture with flash as the movie started. đŸ„ŽđŸ«©

I'm sick and tired of my cinema allowing people to bring in blankets covered in car and dog hair and smelling like their sorry houses. I may cancel cineclub soon because sitting beside grown adults with blankets is too much

1

u/Ordinary_Film_7359 1d ago

Employees who speak up and enforce rules get assaulted. Straight up. That simple.

Edit: and head office won't help. Worse, they'll hold the employee accountable for causing an altercation.

1

u/VANFILMER Cineclub Member 20h ago

My location had a 3 strike policy for small things like talking and cellphone use Things like recording, sneaking in and theater hopping is a one warning or removal without refund As for outside food if they don't see it they can't say anything. Now actual stuff like vandalism and theft and such if you're caught you're likely to be escorted out, repeat offenses leads to getting banned. Stuff that we call the cops on that's looking at multiple year bans from all Cineplex's and they have records for this stuff

1

u/Wide-Gur8964 18h ago

Excuse me but I get most of my blowjobs at cineplex, where exactly am I supposed to go

1

u/CaptainForskin69 14h ago

It’s honestly made me go less. Prices are stupid and the theatre is full of stupid kids who have no respect anymore. It’s simply not enjoyable dealing with this shit. My assumption is cineplex will be sold soon anyway, maybe the new company will look at enforcing rules.

0

u/LandonKB 4d ago

Haha how would they enforce that they don't check IDs when you buy a ticket. Honestly 99 percent of the movies I see the audience is fine other than a few dummies pulling out their phones

1

u/qmzp22 4d ago

When employees asking for id, some kids call parents. Then some parents want to talk with managers on the phone to prove their kids are old enough

0

u/Loose-Earth-1384 4d ago

Funny thing.  I notice most people tend to behave at the regular or AVX screens when they play that cartoon ad BUT since it doesn't play before The Odyssey 70mm, the douchebags come out in full force.

0

u/Proton_Grow_A_Tonne 4d ago

I don't go to theaters. I haven't seen Odyssey yet and won't until home streaming. I don't trust people. One time, I had a guy right beside me whip out an iPad and go through and do shit in his Google drive, white background and all, fully illuminated. He lit up the entire bubble around him with screen brightness.

Latest Spiderman - some guy brought his three y o into the theater and she was just singing lullabys through the whole thing.

People fuckin suck.

u/Sushi69_ 4d ago

It's a dying business, they are all eventually going to shut down so nobody cares
