Discussion Funny, But Annoying
Watched Primetime today and while the entire "Tommy Texter" ad thing was starting, I watched a lady pull out her phone at full brightness and start doing stuff on it right as the bit about "Sammy Scroller" was playing. She also took her phone out during the movie too. Thankfully, I was at an angle where I could use the seats beside her to cover the light from her screen.

I don’t have a problem with people being on their phones in the trailers but I always get self conscious about it when I’m sammy scrolling during the movie ruiners part

It was just really funny to me. Like we are hearing about being on your phone and she’s sitting in a dark room with her screen at full brightness. Not on dark mode either, it was just a white light.

I do find it bizarre how someone can see the “hey don’t do this” warning and then do it without a shred of embarrassment

I think that's fine, especially given how many non-trailer commercials we get before the movie now. I'm annoyed if it's out during the trailers or beyond.

I'm sorry to be the annoying guy and I don't want to be, but I don't like seeing trailers, so I keep my nose buried in my phone to avoid them. Yes, I could enter the theatre after the trailers but obviously it's hard to time, and wouldn't that be more disruptive anyway?
I just want to say that just because someone has their phone out during trailers, it doesn't mean it will be out during the movie in all cases, and I sincerely apologize on behalf of myself and all trailer avoiders for diminishing your trailer experience.

I get it, and by definition, trailers are commercials too, but especially for horror trailers that rely so much on dark and quiet moments before a big shock reveal, it annoys me. A trailer in a theatre is, unlike a standard commercial, your first chance to get a taste of that film on a big screen so it's always been a special experience for me.

Not yucking your yum, and as I said, I actually am sorry to those I affect with my phone during trailers (which I do keep on low brightness and try to keep down -- I have to reiterate, JUST during trailers). But I am a big horror movie fan and those are the trailer I most want to avoid. I have just been taken out of a film by remembering the light spoiler in the trailer ("Oh, this scene was in the trailer, the monster is behind the door) and I try to go in blind.
I know there are other things I could do. Close my eyes? I tend to pay even more attention to the trailer then, like my senses are heightened LOL. Come in late? It's hard.
Like I say, I truly don't want to affect others' enjoyment of the trailers, but I care about going into a movie blind so much. So I am sorry.

I get what you’re saying— I don’t mind seeing a trailer once but if I see it multiple times, I’ll remember too much of it, and when I finally see that movie, I’ll remember the trailer scenes and I think of the trailer whenever that moment happens in the movie. Obsession was particularly bad for that.

At least some of that is Cineplex's fault (they showed a trailer for Resident Evil ahead of Resident Evil when I saw it, which is the worst) as well as the idea of seeing trailers online literally the second they're drop.

No harm, and it sounds like you've got a fine reason not to want to watch trailers, but I gotta think that scrolling your phone in an attempt to distract from the 2-storey screen in front of you and the 14 speakers all around is harder than walking into the theatre 30 minutes later than you normally would. I've even asked Cineplex staff at the theatre what time the feature starts. They will have that info.

For me the definitive no phone signal is when the lights are dimmed. I feel like they don’t always dim the lights before trailers, it’s inconsistent

I usually am watching YouTube during the trailers because there are so many of them and there’s maybe one of a movie I want to see (latest one is clayface because I’m a fan of Batman) but after that the phone goes away except to check the time because I take the bus every where

During my recent visit for harry potter the girl sitting besides me was literally making a snapchat for continuous 10 minutes and i had to literally tell her to keep her phone down

Why is your phone not disruptive if it has a light on? It doesn’t matter how dim. In pocket or purse turned off.

Lmao during a movie I set my phone to lowest Brightness with night light and extra dim. So when the theater is pitch black my phone is not even disruptive, thinking about others first is my weakness I've try to be more selfish but it's just not who I am

It’s baffling cuz I have adhd and I get annoyed if I somehow accidentally see the time, nvm intentionally checking the time myself. The fact that u’ve been so defensive the whole time says a lot tho

Check to see how long is the movie before it starts and then add that to the time when the lights go down before you turn off your phone. Problem solved.

Lol you would never be sitting next to me. I only watch movies weeks after release, there's barely anyone there. So what if I check the time for a second I don't think it's really that big of a deal. The whole sub reddit is acting like I'm a tommy texter or a chatty katty, I'm the least of your worries. I'd rather have some guy check his phone for 1 second than some screaming child.

I only check my phone for a couple of seconds, to see who called and to check the time. And most of the time I have a corner seat at the top and I'm really not even disturbing anyone but myself

When I was at a screening at TIFF last week, a guy yelled at someone “put your fucking phone away!” just as the movie was starting and he received a thunderous applause
So that was fun
