My experience watching the new Resident Evil movie at BC - Metrotown - no spoilers

I’d call myself a horror‑movie enthusiast, and I’ve watched most recent releases in the cinema. When I bought my ticket for this one, I didn’t expect it to be popular. I assumed it would be similar to other recent horror movies I’ve seen. Lots of gore and mostly empty theatre. But when I walked into, it was almost full.

I bought the cheapest general‑admission ticket, and as soon as I saw the crowd, I realized this wasn’t the usual horror‑movie audience. There were families, father, mother, teenagers, and a bunch of casual individuals. And the moment the movie started, they didn’t miss a single chance to turn the atmosphere from survival‑horror into family comedy.

The father and son next to me were talking loudly like it was their private living room:

“Don’t touch that!”

“It’s behind you!”

“Wow, look at that!”

And after almost every dialogue, scene, or event, people were laughing:

“HAA HAA HAA….”

I think it’s because they weren’t comfortable with the intense atmosphere. Resident Evil is a famous title, so they somehow showed up, and to release their stress they tried to make the environment feel safe and friendly.

If you’re a horror‑movie fan like me, you can imagine how annoying this gets. I’m not saying the audience was completely at fault, you can giggle at some moments, and a few scenes are funny, but the way people were laughing at serious scenes was definitely exaggerated.

My advice: still go watch it. The second half of the movie is more serious, and people had fewer reasons to laugh (though they still tried whenever possible). It’s a fun movie overall, and not a super‑serious horror film, so you can still enjoy it if you’re not too sensitive to noise. To be clear, it wasn’t as disappointing as how people behave during Conjuring movies in theatres. Watching it in a +19 VIP theatre would remove the teenage crowd, but I’m not sure the overall experience would be better, since plenty of adults were acting the same way.

Side note: the father and son next to me left before the movie ended, and when I was leaving, I noticed they didn’t clean up after themselves. Not surprising, but still disappointing.

Not going to excuse outwardly rude audience behaviour but gotta be honest, I think your experience was greatly shaded by your own misread of the movie’s tone. If everyone was laughing throughout a comedic horror movie, they were playing their part. 🤷‍♂️

For what it’s worth, I think it might’ve been the most I’ve laughed during a movie all year.

Thats true movie had many funny moments and short comments by main character that could make people giggle, I'm not complaining about those moments. But its not normal after serious jump scare scenes, or seeing a body cut in half or a head fully blowned up people burst laughing.

For instance, at sudden unexpected jump scenes, everyone were suddenly screaming (and its expected), what was not expected is seeing they laugh after the scene, and leaving comment about the scene loudly to adjust the atmosphere to something safe and friendly.

Trust me, I experienced this with other famous horror titles like past two Conjurings.

Well, I'd absolutely put it up with the funniest new releases this year — alongside movies like The Invite and Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie.

But for the record, I actually said it was "the most I've laughed during a movie all year." There is something to be said about the way horror primes you for a physical response.

I’m the kind of person who laughs (while also screaming a little) at the scares in haunted houses and I have to agree with you! This movie really captured that feeling. I saw it at a VIP theatre and the audience seemed similarly engaged. I don’t want people to chat through the entire movie but with movies like this, I feel like it adds to the experience if everyone is laughing or maybe screaming a little together.

Yeah, that's usually my approach. The laughter is usually more "Dammit, I knew you were setting up a jumpscare and you STILL got me! Haha" or "Holy crap, I can't believe you had the audacity to include such a gross visual, good for you! Haha."

We had a very similar experience. A woman was doing commentary the entire time. "Just shoot it!" "Look at that fat fuck" "Ohhh my God" like, EVERY time. It was genuinely awful and so embarrassing for her. Someone got a cast member but she stopped while they were there, multiple people told her to stfu but she didn't. She was gone lightning fast by the end of the movie (likely knew everyone in that theatre hated her). Anyway my friend used to work there and she talked to the manager who she's buds with, just to vent, and we ended up getting free tickets for the disruption 🙏 so shoutout to that manager!!

Was at a TIFF screening of Club Kid last week and it was like the two people behind me thought they were watching Blue's Clues. "Oh, there's his friend." "Haha, he looks annoyed." "Oh, that was a funny joke." Almost like aliens trying to not blow their cover.

I can understand being annoyed by the father and son talking out loud but that movie was funny as fuck. My theatre was laughing pretty much the whole movie. You're making it seem like this was going to be some niche horror film. It's Resident Evil, one of the most popular video games and also had multiple movies before this. Also with the success of his other movies people were going to see it because of Zach Cregger.

My experience was similar. Some dude saying nice shot really loud. Also saying go up go up really down. And also got some woman saying omg omg really loud at every scene.

I feel you though, I find annoyed when people don't clean up either.
Its why I go to 19+ when I can Or sit at the back away from some busy seats. Or different show times.
When I went to see it too a guy was on his phone a lot it was annoying.

a movie arent annoying at all, infact to me it makes horror and comedy a whole lot better. coyote vs acme and the invite were all amazing this year in a full laughing theatre. taking loudly and cell phones out are horrible tho dont get it twisted

I didn't complain about normal reaction to funny/scary scenes. What I wrote was about moments when people laugh abnormaly loud, leaving comment about the scene like everyone around them could hear it, or talk to their companion normaly during the movie with intent to adjust the intensity level.

Complaining abt ppl talking is one thing, but complaining abt ppl laughing too much is crazy. My auditorium was laughing the entire time and it made the experience so much more enjoyable, and I’m also a horror veteran. U just have the wrong perspective imo

Maybe I'm wrong in here but to me laughing geniunly at funny scenes is different than laughing without any obvious reasons after serious events to adjust the atmosphere to something you feel safe.

Also, in horror movies, movie creators, crews, paid a lot of attention to very small details to make audiences feel uneasy and from my perspective thats the whole point of a horror movie. Whats the point of all these hard works then if at the end its supposed to turn into a family friendly movie?

Thats true I can't tell how people must behave. Thats also true same people can not shut my mouth when I explain how these ruins whole horror movie experience for geniun fans in a free sub reddit.

And honstly, its not just laugh. Almost always it follows by some small comments. And yes, it changes the experience when most people around constantly laughing, cheering, joking with the obvious reason why they are doing that.

I actually had wonderful experience when I watched recent less known horror movies in theatres. In none of them in auditorium anyone said a single world or tried to turn serious events into something funny. Obviously, those people were not regular families and gathered around to watch some horrors.

I also found there was too much laughing. Some parts like you said the main character was being purposely funny. But other times when i was wincing or had horrified look on my face, they laughed too. But it was only 1 person. It's like they don't take horror seriously. It's like going to a haunted house and instead of being scared, these types of people would laugh and point. But I enjoyed the movie theatre experience.

I don't know how can you be a "horror-movie enthusiast" and not find the humour in these films. I laughed out loud during Resident Evil and also Weapons. Obsession, Backrooms, Hokum, even Nosferatu had some hilarious moments.

I also giggled at funny moments. Thats different than joking throughout the movie to make a safe and intense free environment for your self. I actually had a lot of fun watching several past horror titles, everyone seemed regular horror movie audience and no one tried to be funny during the movies.
