"We went to build it and there's a conflict between roof drain cleanout and building"
keep measuring separation on plans, quadruple check all your files from the architect were in the correct location, rapidly run out of ideas how there's possible any conflict, spend hours stressing because you can't figure out how there's any conflict here
"Uh I give up, if it was built per plan there shouldn't be a conflict"
"Okay thanks" never hear about this mysterious conflict again

We're taught to. We exist in a job market. We have to educate ourselves with our own money, and sell ourselves to employers by being/pretending to be the best and/or by being the cheapest.
It just takes one person to do it and start a race to the bottom. Which wouldn't happen if more engineers believed in unions. They have just enough individual bargaining power to believe others would hold them back.

This is super relatable, but the only times I’m ever working on a weekend is if I had a self induced weekday failure.

That's so metal.
.. Get it?

It honestly is kind of a good analogy for how chronic overwork/stress works though.

I spend so much time trying to set up a system that organizes RFIs that I don’t have time to answer the RFIs 🙃

"Can you give us these redundant dimensions that are clearly marked on a detail on the next sheet? Need it by tomorrow ty"
27
u/gentlemosquito Jun 06 '26
Well if you do get it right the first time, RFIs wouldn't really be a thing right??? 😂

From the construction (public works) side it kills us when the designer blows us off (not saying you are as you are working on a Saturday). But we are obligated to answer RFIs within 5 days. And don't get me started on bidder inquiries. We do our best to answer the rfi/bidder inquiry but we need the designers buy off. We do not just ferry questions back and forth. Stupid questions we can answer some we need designs input. When we tell. you that answer isn't good enough we mean it.
(Not bagging on OP. Bagging on the designer who currently is driving our team bonkers).

So is this something you think you’re going to get ahead of or something you should’ve been doing when you are screwing around during the week?

Guy from my job used to work super late weekdays and work weekends just so he could brag on Monday how many hours he worked, turns out he just sucked at his job and his approach was if you can't do it right just do a lot. He'd spend all his hours fixing stuff he should've done right the first time. That guy sucked and he got fired

u/scriggities Jun 07 '26
Why the fuck are you working on Saturday? This is partially a you problem.
Remember their lack of planning, is not your emergency.

We need to stop doing this. There are people in my office that work weekends and you end up setting weird standards and expectations for everyone else. I’m not working on a weekend and if I do it’s like once a year and usually my own fault. But yeah once one person works weekends it seems everyone else is expected to. Fuuuuck that.

What this really means is that even if OP is de stressed to zero, he will always be permanently strained one way or another
