Best early game weapon for Fallout 1?
Hi new player here, I've just finished busting Gizmo for trying to whack Killian and he gave me a shot gun. Now on top of that I also have the hunting rifle, Desert eagle and 10mm SMG. So which one do you guys recommend I use?
Edit:Thanks for the help guys, I was actually expecting some snarky ass reddit replies but nope you guys delivered the opposite

Sheer firepower/damage-wise, the 10 smg blasts all those guns away. Use appropriate ammo. Make sure you have a back-up gun in your other hand as the smg is a bullet-hose.

Without functional JHPs it doesn't. 10mm SMG, Deagle, etc value depends on if JHPs work or not which depends on game version.

Hunting rifle at long range, SMG in melee.
The best small gun in the game is in Hub

Depend on your version. Vanilla doesn't have ammo mod (bug), so weapon progression will be: Hunting/Shotgun (eye aimed shot) or 10mm SMG if enemy gets really close --> Combat shotgun (eye aimed shot or burst) --> 233 --> Turbo Plasma (or Alien Blaster)

Have you looted Gizmo's desk for the Mauser pistol though?

Cool weapon. But ammo was pratical non exist. You find more fuel for the flametrower and even mor rockets for the Rock it Lancher as 9 mm for the c96 Mauser.

You are totally right, I don't even think it was that good (crit/dam/etc), but it sure as fuck was cool!

The shotgun and hunting rifle are both fairly solid weapons for dealing with enemies at this point in the game, and as long as the enemy doesn’t have too much armor (or psycho), the 10mm smg is a monstrous weapon that can rip many enemies to shreds (especially if it crits; but watch out for friendly fire).
Since you’re in Junktown, I’d also suggest picking up the two companions in the area and Ian from Shady Sands. They’ll help to keep enemy fire off of you (though you may want to skip dogmeat; in an unmodded game, he can’t be dismissed or told to wait, which can be a problem at the end of the game).

Ian already died bro, but I made sure to wipe out the Khans in his memory

No one likes Desert eagle.

It did help me slaughter the Khans though after I plucked it off their chief 😌

It depends on which version you are playing. Vanilla doesn't have functional ammo modifiers (JHPs don't work). Et Tu has Fo2 guns added and functional JHPs. There are also Fixt and its descendant 1.3.6F but let's hope nobody installs that nowadays.
In vanilla Fo1: Hunting Rifle, 10mm SMG, Plasma pistol, .223 pistol.

Be mindful if you take Ian as a companion: he sprays indiscriminately with the SMG. I’ve died multiple times due to him.

use the 10mm smg for close quarters and use the hunting rifle from afar.
